COMMIT: Tre White transfers to Illinois!

Trey white has committed to Illinois this is what the second big ad for Illinois this offseason uh although I guess depends on your definition of big maybe this is the first big ad second total ad in the transfer portal uh this was a pretty prestigious recruit for star kid a couple years ago out of high school uh he was 35th according to the rsci top 100 on basketball reference don't ask me why I'm using that and not a different scouting Service uh he's played two different years at two different schools he started career at USC averaged nine points a game there pretty forgettable freshman season spent his sophomore season at Louisville which by default makes you pretty forgettable 12.3 points six rebounds 1.3 assists uh shot 30% 29.9% from three on 2.7 attempts a game 75% from the free throw line in a 31 minute a game roll talented kid there are some question marks around that Talent what do you make of Trey white yeah so I think you got it or you kind of hit the nail in the head saying that he is a talented kid the talent is there he's a high pedigree kid as far as his recruiting ranking though he has not really contributed to winning basketball teams I think that he can if he's in a certain role um and that's kind of where I'm at with this this ad by Illinois if they're if you're bringing him in and you're like throw him in the starting lineup he's a Quincy garer replacement I think you're gonna be I think you're GNA be semi disappointed with that now I do think that he is a player that can be a role player on a really good team like I think that if you're playing Trey white like 20 minutes a game or something like that or or some type of role like that maybe even more minutes given the game or matchups I think he's a guy that can contribute he's six7 I think he rebounds well for his size he averages around six a game not much of a passer Creator or anything like that but I think that he's a guy that can contribute um to winning basketball I think that his role definition and what his role is on Illinois team is GNA be a big indicator of that though yeah I want to know more about what his role is going to be because I am hearing people be like oh he's a Quincy garer replacement I hate that I don't I don't see that at all here um I think they're completely different players in every possible way like the only the only thing I think is maybe at all similar here is I think Trey white is a pretty good rebounder and Quincy Gary had a lot of double digit rebounding games so like I could see him ju just getting into this like let's crash the board system and being okay yeah to to be honest with you I'm not gonna come on here and say it's a bad ad because I do think Trey white is talented I don't really understand this though um like why a a Trey White's a kid that as a freshman on USC played 27 minutes a game uh as a sophomore he played 31 minutes for Louisville like I don't think he's if he's playing that many minutes on Illinois I think then you're a bad basketball team so I I'm not I'm really I'm just intrigued by this ad like what was the sell to Trey white in this situation I'll the the cell is hey we're a winning ass program and did you not see what I just did with tan Shannon and Marcus damask like you're so so wait so are you giving him hope that he want that you want him to be that no but I think Brad like you're asking what the cell is Brad's a Salesman right Brad Brad's gonna go tell every player in the portal you can come do what Marcus damask and Terence Shannon did look what I did with my big guards right um I iess I guess cell was the wrong word it's not what I trying to use I'm wondering what the what the thought process is I guess of being like let's add Trey white like you know Brad I think has done a good job in the last season being being able to add a need right you know he he attacks whatever his need is in the portal you're losing a lot this season with Coleman Hawkins and Terence Shannon Jr and Damas thing still up in the air by the way there's a lot of like projecting that that'll happen don't know if that'll happen and right now I know it's early and it's not fair but you're losing all three of those guys and the first two moves are Trey white and Jake Davis it makes me like the Jake Davis move more because you need some shooting um look I I think I wouldn't lump in Trey white with Jake Davis they're completely different players and also like I I I mean every possible thing is different Trey white was like a pedigree Talent who has been on losing teams and underwhelmed uh Jake Davis was not a pedigree Talent who had honestly a great season at a small level so between the two of them like at at bare minimum you have like you've broadened your rotation like there's never going to be a shortage of guys that can play basketball and can do various different things and part of me feels like Underwood in general and the way he runs things at Illinois right now is like hey just get a bunch of different players who can do a bunch of different things and we'll figure it out later and don't hate that approach to be honest with you right because like I I give credit to coaches who can build winning teams out of like whatever their parts look like I like guys who change the identity of their team on a year-to-year basis to fit the pieces that they have the your question and your point is like behind closed doors what about Trey White made him uh oh we need to go get him guy for Illinois and my honest answer to you would be I don't think Illinois even viewed it that way I think Illinois is just like doing the Illinois thing where they're like let's just offer a 100 transfers and whoever commits will take and then Trey white committed they're probably like oh all right like okay here we go um make no mistake about it they have more spots here so like he's not a bad take but you have to you have to nail your final two spots now or however many spots they have right like you got to go get like AJ store and kylin Boswell or like Robbie Aila to like make you feel really good about the talent caliber of this team next year like you you are still missing the Shannon and the damask and the Hawkins on next year's team so if Damascus back great you still need two though and I don't think Trey white fills that I I I don't know I think I could be wrong um now with that said people comparing him to Gary crazy because I have I have huge questions on Trey White's shot like I I just don't see him as a shooter if you've never shot 30% from three the floor in your career I don't trust you as a shooter the whole sell on garer at least was like he's a volume shooter floor spacer with size um I don't buy Trey white as that at all I buy Trey white more as like an on ball Dynamic guy with size who can do a little bit he is a guard he's 67 210 so I if there was like I don't think there's a one for one replacement with it but if you were asking like which player from last year's Illinois team was Trey white maybe gonna like help do some of isn't it the mask more than anybody like I could see Trey white being like a booty ball guard and I could see that working yeah but it's just it the difference is it's it's booty ball without passing he's average one assist in his freshman season and one assist in a sophomore season I don't think he has a pass button I mean one assist is not nothing like I know that's that's low yes but if you're not the primary playmaker on your team like one assist is more than some off ball guys get yeah I suppose I just I I saw damask as like a guy who could distribute but once again once again Trey White's a sophomore Demarcus Damas had played four years of college basketball so you know I I I think a guy can improve but I've never seen I've never been like oh yeah Trey White's a guy that can do anything else for others how worried are you about like taking a guy from what Louisville was this last year and you know like Illinois views himself as a very healthy program right now do you really want to be like plucking guys from Louisville's locker room uh no straight up no like you don't want to be doing that or you're not worried about it uh I because like I'm looking at it like I'm not like SC Scot Clark is talented like I want Scott Clark Trey white I Trey White's talented yeah I mean I I think Trey white is one of the guys that I would actually add from I think there's there was three guys on Louisville that I would add it's skot Clark it's Hatfield and Trey white like I know they came from a losing program and no one was winning with that program no one was winning with Kenny Payne that it's it's not necessarily their fault okay um that makes sense makes sense I I actually would just flip it like for a guy like Trey white if you're leaving Louisville to me to go sign up to play for Illinois shows a level of maturity the same way that like maybe you hoped guys like Damas and garer would bring right like you don't I don't think if you're Trey white you don't sign up for Illinois unless you're willing to sacrifice some things like if he wanted to go be a first option somewhere he could have done that at a smaller level um or he could have just I mean I don't know Pac Kelsey allowed him to but he could have just stayed at Louisville and hoped that it was kind of a mess of a roster and he got to be featured um so I don't know this to me expresses like okay Trey White's desire is to win everybody goes to the portal with different reasons Trey White's desire seems to be he wants to go be a part of something that wins so uh he's caught my attention for that at least but yeah was was very surprised when this was the name that got announced it's like oh Illinois has a new commit did not expect this to be the one puts a lot of pressure on them to get the the more Marky targets I think yeah I think they will
