2024 College Football on CBS schedule released | CBS Sports

well this just in CBS Sports has announced its 2024 college football multiplatform schedule Windows of all the games that will come your way on CBS and of course streaming on Paramount plus college football on CBS will look a little different this year with the big 10 being in the spotlight and a reminder the Big 10 added the Pack 12 teams they sort of merg into one big mix so we're going to dive into the matchups but as you see it on your screen that is what the college football schedule looks like on CBS let's bring in our crew we got chip Patterson excited college football is back host of the cover three podcast he's going to give us the story lines in terms of the game matchups we also have our Sportsline betting analyst McKenzie Brooks who's going to give us the season outlook from an analytical standpoint so obviously guys several new faces in the Big 10 I've been calling this the big 18 because there's so many freaking teams that will be squaring off this year but we got to start with USC Michigan you got the reigning National Championship facing off against USC uh the Wolverines will be without Jim Harbaugh this year though but I got to ask you are they the team to beat at the beginning of the Season not in the Big 10 and and not nationally either but I do think that this is an important pivot point in the season for both USC and Michigan because USC incredibly disappointing 2023 campaign Lincoln couldn't get it done with Caleb Williams back you know they fall way short of expectations now I would say that the competition is getting tougher in the Big 10 and you've got to go into the big house we've questioned their physicality well it does not get more physical than Chiron Mo in Michigan and then in the big picture historical perspective these are two of the biggest brands in all of college football history and Haley they've only played 10 times ever and they haven't played in the regular season since the late 1950s every other meeting between Michigan and USC in football has been in the Rose Bowl so so much tradition so few actual results and so what it means for USC what it means for Michigan but also the interest that this is going to generate across the country I'm so fired up for this being one of our early games on CBS yeah I think this will be exciting now when you look at the actual betting line some of these lines are actually out already you have Michigan as 10 and a half Point favorites in some books when we look at the model and we're trying to make these early projections before before we know too much a lot of what we're looking at is their win totals those Futures then we're looking at returning production and the talent rating so obviously Michigan lost a ton okay that's you know obvious to the naked eye but what they have in talent and continuity that they still have on that roster really is important in this spot when you look at the game itself I think without harball now when you looked at the games he was suspended they were running the ball and I think they'll be running the ball again because they can they have Donovan Edwards still they still have a strong Run game their defense is still awesome okay they still have top defensive tack top quarterbacks this is still a great defense but as far as that running game I think USC will have a hard time stopping them there so as far as a prediction for this game I think it's going to be slow I think it's going to be on the ground if this was a single digit spread I'd say I'd go with Michigan here double digit if you're a run dominant team I don't think they have to win this game by 11 12 points to control it so I I I'd stay off if you can find this somewhere at a different book where it's n and a half I think I go with Michigan here but it will be a slow ugly game if it's anything like what we saw when hard ball was suspended this season oo that sounds like an under that sounds like a great opportunity for us to jump on and under because you know if if you're going to keep Lincoln Riley's offense from scoring what better way to do it than to keep that quarterback whether it be Miller Moss whether it be jadeen Maya keep him on the sideline run the dang ball I think Chiron Moore knows with his all caps smash theme for the 2024 season we might be looking at a lot of Michigan unders oh my gosh like my heart rate just went up a little bit guys break it down we are so fad let's keep the conversation going guys if we jump ahead to week three you get Notre Dame at Purdue maybe not the same fireworks that we could see in uh some of these other big 10 games but it's only up for the boiler makers who did not have a very successful season last year and Chip I know you're loving this we're bringing back the battle for the chal Le trophy it's the Rivalry trophy between these two uh has some Irish history to It Dating back to 19 or excuse me 1896 the last time in the current century that these teams met was back in 20121 uh chip how do you think the 2024 Edition in the battle for the shalele trophy will go down yeah the little bit of instate hate right there in Indiana excited for this one and excited to get a good look at Notre Dame because a lot of question marks about where the Fighting Irish would be I think that they are probably closer to that s six knocking on the door of the top five than they are to 25 I think they've got a schedule that's very manageable and this will be a chance for us to see the Fighting Irish tested early are they going to need Riley Leonard to be absolutely outstanding maybe that not maybe they just need him to be serviceable cuz the wide receiver room has more depth than it's had in years I think they've got good offensive line replacements for the two tackles that whip Pro and speaking of the NFL Draft when I was looking at players that the 2025 NFL draft Knicks are keeping an eye on me we're talking about Howard cross on the defensive line Mitchell Evans at tight end you got two players in the defensive backfield with Benjamin Morris and Xavier Watts like Notre Dame has more potential top three round draft picks than most teams in college football keep your eye on the Irish because there could be showing up you know 10 and two 11 and one at the end of the season yeah I like the Irish tier I think you have a lot of good returning production on offense like you said Riley Leonard is he going to be Sam Hartman maybe not but I think he's going to be a solid quarterback in this spot when we're looking at trying to predict ICT the spreads here we don't have a line yet on this game but when you look at teams that Notre Dame has played at home like Purdue it's around a 20 point spread so I'm thinking on the road they'd be somewhere around 17o favorites in this spot they don't give me some crazy historical Trend that they can cover that I think I would like Purdue these are two teams second-year coaches Purdue is returning their quarterback so they have some good returning production and they have go dogs a couple Georgia Bulldogs joining the roster here now they weren't starters they're's still four or five star recruits here so their talent ratings going up they still have good production I think there's a chance if this spread comes out it's around 17 I would take Purdue to cover and keep it around 14 I know our Tracy Anderson upstairs loves to hear that as a graduate from Purdue as you take a look at those dogs who are now at Purdue something I want to mention going back to the rivalry games here Purdue really has some good ones they've got the shalele trophy uh in this matchup they also have the Canon trophy against Illinois and the old Oaken Bucket against Indiana so I think Purdue wins the uh rivalry trophy competition there in my opinion but of course they're not the only rivalry game that will'll be watching on CBS This season in the big Den the other notable on deck of course the Chris Hassel Bowl in week two where we get Iowa Iowa State the winner of this one Chris told me gets the S Hawk Trophy award so another fun trophy there uh chip what are you watching for in that match up between Iowa and Iowa State oh this game exists in a universe unto itself I I mean there are years when Iowa is competing for the Big 10 championship and you're like well what happened in week two in that Iowa State game and there are years where Iowa State knocking on the door of eight nine wins and you go back you said what happened week two against Iowa there is like so much great college football rivalry hate in this matchup and it's everything that we are kind of losing with the modern college football era in terms of regionality every single workplace every single church every single soccer team it is nothing but Iowa in Iowa State and so here for this season well we're looking at Iowa finally changing up its offense you know we Brian fence is gone we're bringing in Tim Lester we're seeing if that's going to lead to anything close to Modern offensive production for Iowa State I liked what I saw out of the Young quarterback Roco Beck last year but it is a team that is a little bit devoid of talent compared to Iowa and compared to a lot of the teams there at the top of the Big 12 so can Iowa State coach Matt Campbell you know who was once seen as a rising star be able to lead the Cyclones to the top of a big 12 that no longer has Texas or Oklahoma this is a great time for us to take the temperature of Iowa State and learn a lot more about what's going on with Iowa's redone offense I'm going to say Iowa's redone offense might be a stretch of the word here they're returning 75% of that offense which is good for like seven points of offense with that 75% I don't even know if that's a good thing that they're returning 75% uh I have never been the the biggest Iowa supporter here and look the spread here would be Iowa uh would be 2 and a half Point favorites at home we make this close to 5050 game we actually lean Iowa State 52% of the time so from a betting angle I say take the Iowa State money lineup plus money if it's going to be so close here but if you look at the win totals which is what we like to look at as well s and a half wins is the line for both of these teams which is indicating that they're going to be pretty in line teams here so again I need Iowa to prove something to me offensively before I take them in any game here I mean the last three Road teams of this matchup have won so Iowa State's on the road I think it's worth a little money line plus money sprinkle to go with Iowa State here dare I say love a little money line sprinkle all right uh this next matchup guys give me all the smoke last year's match up between Colorado and Colorado state was insane of course we saw the Buffalo winning it in double overtime it was also the game chip that we saw Colorado lose Travis Hunter for a few weeks with a last erated lungs so with all of the drama that constantly surrounds Colorado both in Seasons past and even in this off season uh we know they're going to be in the spotlight here what are you expecting from this matchup after all the fireworks we saw last year oh and don't forget Deion Sanders and Colorado State coach Jane norell going back and forth and you know like don't you don't talk about my mama and bringing his mama out to talk to the team I me the layers on layers of drama I am so excited uh that we're going to have an opportunity to Spotlight this one which everyone should note is in Prime Time Prime Time America's mostat Network the network of stars we get to see coach Prime uh going in to play Colorado State in a rivalry game you got to think the Rams are going to be fired up and it's something that I will be watching with Colorado because what I noticed was at the end of the season especially you know you were seeing a case where other teams were as fired up to play Colorado as they would be to play Alabama because if you are 19 to 22 years old figures like shadur Sanders Travis Hunter Dion Sanders in the era that we are in those are true celebrities those are superstars you want to show out against them so especially with the way things lost with the double overtime defeat I think Colorado State's going to have something for shadur Sanders and Colorado Colorado uh McKenzie you can fill me in on this one I would bet it's probably still favored even with all the roster turnover that they've had this year but I do think that that's going to be something that I'm watching in this game and throughout Colorado season because you get fired up to play the best teams in the country well other teams are bringing that level when they play the Buffs yeah we were looking at the lines here so what we like to do is look at where we would set the line and then we look at where the odds makers put it now I have to imagine odds makers would have made this a three and a half Four Point Colorado would be favored but they know that they can get people to beted on Colorado at minus 7 and a half minus 8 so that's what they do they set it up minus 8 because they know they can get the public on this team they love to bet on them as far as the actual game on the field I don't think they are eight points better than Colorado State I mean it took a miracle in double overtime triple overtime whatever it is on your own home turf and I think Colorado State like chip was saying I think they have a little chip on their shoulder they're feeling edgy coming into this gamee I think Colorado is going to be overrated as far as how their lines are set all season so I would be careful if you like Colorado minus the eight I'm sure this is the shortest it's going to be so I would take it now if you do like Colorado this is kind of a stay off for me yeah I guess the real question is do you believe in being able to get some Revenge because I definitely like Colorado State to be able to keep this thing really close and you've just got to look at um where Colorado state is in terms of J norville's building and I know that we're going to talk all about Deion Sanders but this is a coach Who coming up out of the Oklahoma offensive tree went to Nevada had Nevada running strong we remember Carson strong Romeo dubs the players on that Wolfpack offense Wolfpack two wordss and he makes the move to Colorado State at a time when Colorado state was devastated Steve adio left that program in in a heap of ruins and now it's building slow building slow I think Colorado State could have a really good season and certainly being competitive or pulling the upset against their instate rival would be a big step forward did you have that sound just like queued up like was that just like ready to go that was incredible it's one of four sound pads here in the palacial patteron studios I just needed a second to you know to load it up he's so good like that yeah oh my gosh all the star power there with Dion and the Buffs by the way chip I did want to mention because you brought up the T the turnover that Dion and the Buffs have seen they lost uh let's see 23 players this spring they have added 34 through the transfer portal so it's going to definitely be a completely different team if we pivot to another rivalry game we've got Minnesota and Wisconsin uh Michigan Minnesota is actually the longest played Big 10 rivalry there but uh in week 14 of course it about the Badgers and the Golden Gophers uh I was trying to think of a way to make this kind of fun I think in the animal kingdom chip a badger would beat a gopher if it came time to like a one-on-one between the animals but uh in terms of the football here do you feel that playing out as well or which side are you on there oh well we got to remember the trophy is an axe so it's whichever one has an axe if the Gopher has an axe all of a sudden you've got an advantage against the badger uh I think that there's a lot of um not pressure on Wisconsin coach Luke fickle because he's only in his second year there but I do think that there's a lot of intrigue in seeing if this Badger team is going to bounce back from what I do think was a disappointing seven- win campaign Luke fickle shows up after getting Cincinnati to the college football playoff double digigit win seasons on double digigit win seasons and offense didn't really click they go get Tyler van djk who was at Miami before know defensively they've shaken up that staff as well I I've believe believe that Wisconsin over the last decade really and even going back to Brett belma has had the talent to be able to compete as a top five top six big 10 team even in the reworked 18 team Big 10 but man there were some really disappointing losses losses to Northwestern losses that they just shouldn't have had on the schedule last year so can they tighten things up where will Wisconsin be at this point in the season and for Minnesota and it it's been a while since they had you know Rashad baitman and Tyler Johnson they just don't have the same level of um NFL players at some key positions that they used to so my big interest here in addition to it being Black Friday football who doesn't love that it is definitely going to be on where Wisconsin is at the end of this regular season given the fact that the first year of the Luke fickle era was a disappointment and the expectations as the conference is expanding are not lowering at all yeah as far as a betting angle we're looking at a game in November you know week 14 so there's only so much to be said here as far as right now we would give Wisconsin a 57% chance we would make the score Wisconsin 24 Minnesota 21 for whatever that's worth right now but when you look back to last season you're looking at Wisconsin we're three-point favorites on the road in Minnesota one by 14 so now that they're at home I'd say that we're anticipating the line to be around you know Wisconsin's favor minus5 to minus 7 here if you get a minus 7 I would lean Minnesota ATS but again only so much to say for a game that is months and months away as much as I love to talk about it I know we're always looking at head here in our industry trying to project and predict what's going to happen but ultimately guys we are excited because college football is back on CVS chip Patterson you are a man of many talents we appreciate you hopping on HQ with us McKenzie giving us the betting analysis we are so close to college football guys and here are the notable odds to win the Big 10 title Mackenzie you got Ohio State coming in at Plus 160 alongside Oregon is there something here that jumps out to you do you believe in Ohio State this early what are you thinking I don't know I think I have to see a lot from Ohio State here but taking any future in May at plus 160 isn't really up my alley so I might be shooting for some of the higher odds
