The New York Giants UNRETIRE Ray Flaherty's Jersey | Malik Nabers is Wearing Number 1!!

that Bell let's go ahead and get into this all right so we got something like Breaking News um we have been waiting pretty much all offseason or ever since Malik neighbors got drafted to figure out what jersey number he wear and uh usually I wouldn't make a video about just the rookie jersey number but I think this is a really cool story so he's actually going to be wearing number one and I sure some some people are saying number one's retired and it is retired uh ra FL her's Family actually gave him the honor of wearing number one and those are those are big shoes to feel because he may not be well known among younger Giants fans or you know even even some older Giants fans who weren't around in the 30s or uh yeah the early 30s but he's a guy whose jersey retired he's a Pro Football Hall of Famer uh he's a World War II veteran I'm pretty sure and he's also a guy that coached basketball in college and he also coached in the NFL so a renaissance man pretty much and I just want to just give him his flowers uh this is the perfect time and this is exactly why his family AG agreed to do this is that they wanted to to give their father's name some light again and I just wanted to do the best I can here to do that so um he started on the Giants in 1929 that's a year before my grandmother was born that that is like uh that's almost 100 years ago the 29 the Giants were 5 years old at that point so started off in 1929 left to go coach college basketball came back in 1931 and stayed there all the way through 1935 uh he played end with with the Giants which does that position doesn't even exist anymore but he played in um and he led the NFL and receiving uh it led to an NFL in yards receptions touchdowns uh yards per reception and yards per game uh three three time all pro and and a guy that helped get the Giants in NFL Championship in 1934 so his jersey was retired literally right after he uh after he retired the same offseason pretty much or The Following season after he retired and it was the first time the first time in NFL history that a player retired and his jersey number was retired so this guy was a Pioneer he wore number one and it was just fitting because number one was literally the first jersey that was ever retired in professional football so let's give our flowers let's give our respect uh and honor Ray flery and uh you know say thank you to his family for for allowing Malik neighbors to wear this jersey so what happened with Malik neighbors is he kind of got an inkling that maybe he may be able to wear a retired jersey from John maror John Mara calls him up into the office almost like a principal's visit and uh you know mik neighbor is probably trying to figure out what's going on at this point here forgotten John May says so what's going on with the Jersey uh would you you know what number do you want and he said I would like one but I'm not going to force his family I I don't want to force them in try to unretire his number and lo and behold John may had already talked to the FL family and they all signed off on it all of his kids and Malik neighbors is going to be wearing number one so of course he called them thank them it just shows the kind of person that Malik neighbors is he called them personally to thank them and to say that he would make sure to honor their dad's name uh and and honor the you know the work that he put in as a New York football Giant and uh yeah he's got big shs to fill man that first jersey ever retired in professional football uh one of the first Hall of Famers who was a giant a guy that that that really made an impact on the world and on the New York football Giants so wanted to give him his flowers and Malik neighbors will be wearing number one and um they're going to be un retiring the Jersey specifically for Malik and then retiring it uh when Malik either changes a number or he you know retires himself so I think two things will come out of this the first thing is I wonder if Malik would uh would is going to keep this number because they were so gracious to give that to him and and just kind of just used that number as like you know this is a number that's already retired and they're allowing me to wear this so I got to live up to this number or I wonder if he's just going to switch numbers if eight became available next year you know not to wish anything bad on eight over my shoulder but if that became next year if it became available next year would uh Malik neighbors just switch to eight or is he going to be satisfied with one so we'll find that out when we come to that but uh yeah I mean he's really got to live up to that pick or or you know you you've unretired a jersey for him you that that that is a huge that's a huge thing especially in the 100th year uh that's a huge thing and and I think this is this is appropriate to do even if Malik only wears this jersey for one year it'll be on the 100th year anniversary and it'll be honoring uh one of the great Giants players so I think this is this is perfectly fitting for a player that we drafted High a player that we think is going to be great and uh yeah so listen you're wearing number one Malik we need you to lead the league and receptions and yards and touchdowns and everything like that because uh wow I did not expect a team like the Giants to unretire a jersey for somebody I haven't even really heard of anything like that happening in the NFL because our our entirety pretty much who who knows maybe in 50 years all of the single digits will be retired and I'm pretty sure Malik is probably thinking will I you know will I wear this number the rest of my career and will they retire to number ones that that's something that that we don't have to worry about for a long time hopefully but if Malik has a career good enough for his jersey to be retired will will they retire two number one jerseys and will they be right beside each other uh and the Hall of Fame and this is really early we're not putting Malik and Canton yet but in a situation where he did qualify for that how would that play out so uh yeah I just thought this was surprising I thought it was a cool story uh I think this is the perfect time for everybody uh during this year they they're doing their top 100 Giants check that out on the Giants YouTube channel but they're doing their top 100 Giants of all time and this is just a great time to to look at the history of this franchise and why a lot of us are fans of this franchise is because of the great history and just take a look at some of the players that are you know Hall of Fame players that we've never even seen play live but there is footage of a lot of these players and um yeah it's it's it's just a great time to take a look back at a lot of these players that really get lost and maybe this will inspire more of these players families to say hey I want my grandfather's Jersey to be worn by a great player this year so Malik you can't you can't Malik cannot let this family down he has got to show up and show out in his career and I think he will I think he's taking that serious ious and um I think they won't regret that they gave him number one so
