Cowboys Winners & Losers vs. Raiders Ft. Trey Lance, Deuce Vaughn, Ryan Flournoy And Viliami Fehoko

[Music] and welcome back into the Cowboys report I am the still kind of tired Tom Downey here for some winners and losers coming out of the second preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys in which despite being seven-point underdogs they found a way to take on and beat the Las Vegas Raiders 27 to2 a lot more winners than there were losers in today's video so let's get into it I am going to put Tre Lance on the winnner category I am maybe not surprised over the Fairly sizable differences of opinion and sometimes outright negative comments or super positive comments on Trey Lance I I told you guys going into week two I just wanted to see him improve and be better he was there there's still things to be better at but I think pretty clearly Trey Lance was the best quarterback in that game last night I don't know if that's a very high bar or the bar that we're looking for cuz I thought mchu and okell were both pretty bad in that game but I thought Lance was solid there are still things I wanted to be better at I don't think he's suddenly a top 15 NFL QB but for what I had as my expectations going into the game I thought Lance at least met them so what I want to do Monday morning is spend a lot more time on Trey Lance the positives the negative what we've seen so far in the preseason what's next Etc if you want that video then share this one uh we'll require me getting in a whatever if you want that trance breakdown next up on my preseason winners list I thought uh marce lefal was pretty solid in that game didn't play a ton of snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders but did have three tackles no Deone Clark um know no de Marv and overshown lefal you know played less snaps than guys like Nick Harvey or Nick vigil Willie Harvey did only 16 snaps for Maurice lefal the vast majority of those coming in coverage but he had a really nice Run Stop on one play three tackles I thought looked pretty comfortable pretty confident uh didn't see a lot of liability plays out there so good things from lefal the fact he's not playing a massive amount by the way is probably a good indication for how this team feels about him making an impact in year one next up on the pre-season week two winners the returning running backs I'm talking two players here in in particular duvon and Royce Freeman I cannot quit duvon I I just can't do it especially in the preseason every time he touches the ball good things happen he had five carries for 34 yards he was the teams tied for leading rusher he had like eight snaps in the game or seven snaps in the game whatever it was and every single touch was a successful play every single one by the way he also led the team in yard to contact with 19 you can't convince me he's not one of the top three backs on this roster again that bar is not very high even what this team has but for a team that lacks explosive plays and juice and shiftiness du Von offers that and I also think Royce Freeman played pretty well in this matchup seven carries 32 yards a 4.6 average thought he ran pretty hard overall thought he showcased some good things Royce Freo as I believe is a vested veteran so you could actually get out of the practice squad by the way which I don't think should be overlooked um because you can stash him there game day call if needed to I but I I keep coming back to it even though I thought V or I thought Freeman played pretty well Duce Von was better I want to see him get more usage and I like honestly a lot of the negative de Von reps have come in bad situations in real games when you are in a blowout up or down asking du Von to just gra the clock is it doesn't make any sense but I thought he ran low I thought he ran hard I thought he was explosive he made some Shifty runs I liked what I saw from dufon again I still believe I I can't quit our small King I can't do it I I was almost trying to convince myself to to to to to to fall for it and I I I I just I can't I I I can't quit him yet now if there's a better run that comes available I'm open to it still but do you believe in dufon y for yes n for no sound off for me the pin comment of today's show Marshon neand next up here again only a handful of snaps for neand but they were pretty solid 16 snaps in uh week two he had a tackle was a good run stop two pressures by the way on 11 pass rush snaps pretty good efficiency um and the Raiders remember were playing a good portion of their starters pretty deep into that game so I liked what I saw from neand I think in general your first year class your your your your first year players right gon looks great marshan nean played well we will we mentioned Reese lefel we will talk about Cooper BB kayin Carson looks pretty solid we'll mention another rookie here in a second too a much better class than what you saw early Returns on in 2023 I don't like doing this uh for reasons that I think you all know by now but I am going to be objective on the field and put Josh ball on this list uh the Cowboys have taken operation white lie literally as they always do with my bits Josh Paul has actually played very well in the Cowboys first two preseason games and he played well at left tackle in this game chuma DOA is banged up he is going to miss time Earl bosk is going to miss time the Cowboys as of this moment their number two left tackle it's Josh ball that that's who they told us it was by putting him out there in week two of the preseason he he had a bad penalty but he didn't get beaten pass protection and was a solid run blocker all things considered the Cowboys can't quit Josh Paul same that I apparently can't quit dufon as it sits right now and I reserve right change my mind based on week three trading Camp Etc I think it's more likely than not that Josh Ball's on this did a little fake slant and got right behind him for the touchdown four catches 23 yards did have a I called it a 6040 drop but floi in the battle if there is a wide receiver six on this roster I'd give the edge to him for the time being I was pretty impressed All Things Considered with what I saw out of Ryan floro in this week's game another re receiver we will get to here in a second but I week two preseason winner drop that name or names for me in the comments again Redemption Arc racy McMath was bad in week one drops couldn't catch looked uncomfortable made lance look worse had some great hands catches in this one three catches 54 yards 18 average while they had the long catch of 30 yards which did feature some Yak the really one downfield throw the Cowboys have connected on with Lance in the game uh strong showing out of racy McMath I doubt he makes the roster but I kind of like him as a special teams option let's go to Cooper BBE the center battle is very much on and I don't think Brock Hoffman played poorly by any stretch of the imagination we're not going to mention him but I thought Dakota shefley played pretty bad in this game but I thought baby was pretty good uh there's that one rep floating around there on Twitter where he two reps where he's dirting guys uh I I have a clip from a Star Wars Battlefront game of you're going to take a dirt nap and that's what Cooper BB does he's dirt napping guys left and right Tyler gon is dirt napping guys it's a good thing got some attitude and toughness on the offensive line the Cowboys historically have drafted incredibly well on the o line especially earlier rounds I think they did it again with BB by the way so two weeks ago a week ago what have said this is C this is Brock Hoffman's job he's going to be the starter the coaching staff loves him the last week and a halfish got a lot of good Buzz for Cooper BB I'm back I I I want it to be BB we'll see what the Cowboys decide who do you think starts at Center CB or BH in the comments I mean you guys knew Kon Hall was going to be on this list right how how could he not be uh the 69 everyone type nice uh yard pick six that I think set my boy Mitch Ren into a very dark place uh targeted six times in coverage allowed three catches 22 yards interception which kind of counts as a pass breakup too I don't think he makes the 53 man roster um but I think practice squad got a real shot for that one finally some other defensive backs I wanted to give some love to I'm not putting Andrew boo on this list I thought he tackled well but was inconsistent in coverage some good reps some not so good reps thought Maris Bell was solid he was great in week one it was W Thomas's turn to be like this guy's too good to be out there now the Raiders playing their star so it's it's probably fine but I thought Wan Thomas played well in the nickel I thought Israel Mamu was pretty solid not necessarily splashy or flashy but he didn't really allow any big plays he was didn't allow a catch in three on three targets I I thought he was good I think Julius wood has also flashed some uh ammani Johnson maybe to a certain extent as well I love your safety depth man it's good I I'd like to get what on the practice squad but I think Bell Thomas and Mamu I want to keep those guys on the active roster if you guys want more Cowboys coverage be live for week through one time dropped it had the fumble on punp returns you're fighting for your roster life out there and Cropper didn't didn't play well like I I I feel bad for the kid because like I still want the practice squad but you know these games matter and he's getting he's getting looks and he's just not making plays on so nay Cowboys preseason week 2 loser for me in the comments section I want to mention some other skill guys there's a tight end spot open there's maybe an extra wide receiver spot open for as much positive Praises we have seen for Tyron Billy Johnson at a training camp he's been a no-show in the games now it's not all's fault a receiver you're impacted by the QB and the game planning Etc but he's been a noow I don't think brevan span forward is blocked nearly as well as he needs to he was the one who got cooked on that one Max Crosby rep and I don't think Princeton Fant has fared great in some of the fullback reps which I think gives a very clear Edge in that fullback tight end hybrid battle I think your biggest preseason Loser by the way across the board vami foko have you guys noticed him at all like honest he had 45 snaps in this game you know how many pressures he had zero he had zero so like or sorry 38 38 snaps in this game my bad I misspoke but 38 snaps zero pressures you know what he did do he missed he missed the tackle on a on a tfl and he just got stiff armed away because he took a bad angle in the preseason so far this year Junior F hoko has 75 total snaps he's had 51 pass rush opportunities he has zero pressures all play in defensive end for the most part mind you got one assist to tackle and One Missed tackle Dan Quinn come pick up your son at school it's your it's your weekend you you you got to come pick him up G give us a draft pick back because I I don't see how how he makes this team he's done nothing for me keep playing him give him chances but I have seen nothing positive from Hook I I I by the way I know I'm bodying the guy I feel bad doing that don't get me wrong it's football man you you got to make plays so I am hoping he breaks out in the third game I have seen 75 snaps of zero impact is unacceptable for a fourth round pick I am going to put mod Smith here on the loser side sounds like he is recovering better from his allergic reaction last update I saw from Mike McCarthy was he's doing better progressing in the right direction he was on the bus to go to the airport when he had the allergic reaction so I I'm glad he's doing better it does suck that he missed out on I think those 15 20 snaps would have been valuable um it sucks it's another thing that's kind of limiting the growth of Mazy Smith but hopefully he's back out there at practices this week [Music]
