How To Find a Support Network as a NEW Mortgage Broker

and navigating that space so they can have a career and thrive in it and today we are talking about how to find a support network when you start as a mortgage broker because when you start it can be pretty lonely there can be also some negativity there people can say bad things maybe it's not what you want to hear and so we need to know how to find the right support and for this episode I am joined by a good friend of mine we're joined by Craig Skelton Craig is a what is he not he's a mortgage business coach he's also a principal of many different firms under different brands check him out you'll see him but I'll also link a description in the video in description here you'll see links to all the stuff he does but he's very qualified to answer this specific question so Craig mate welcome to the video thanks Ash and thanks for that intr tion appreciate that looking forward to I'm looking forward to this good me too me too so straight away let's just dve straight into it how do you find a supportive Network when you start as a mortgage broker and why is that important think the thing is with regards to when you're first starting out like you said there in the introduction it's a lonely place you're going self-employed you tend you might be part of the firm you might be sort of going totally alone when you're first starting out depend doesn't matter what road you're going but there are plenty of Brokers out there that will help and support you and will give you that the advice you need and I think the thing is with regards to it is there there's plenty of broken like if you look at LinkedIn on social media there are Facebook groups as well with regards to being a mortgage broker there were recruitment Facebook groups there are plenty of places on social media that will that you can reach out to to Brokers and there's a lot of one of the feedbacks I get with people starting out in the industry is that they're very they're pleasantly surprised by how receptive mortgage brokers are and firm owners are to people reaching out and just asking questions to get an idea of what it's like what the industry is like what it's like being a broke or what it's like being self-employed because so there will be people that won't want to share that and you'll get straight nose back from all they will legno but there are plenty of people out there and groups out there just to reach out and just asking the questions and don't be persistent with them in terms of time of day and and messaging them five six times on the bounce and things like that just be very Str what is it that you want to know what is it that you're looking to achieve and just speak to Brokers if you want to know what it's like in the industry speak to a broke speak to there are plenty of people out there on social media on LinkedIn particularly that will that will talk to you and just share you their experiences do you find within like within the space because as from my experience it is very lonely when you first start out people who are watching this they're going to be really like a lot of them will be cmap or maybe just literally starting out employed it can be pretty lonely and having the right type of people around you can make a huge difference can't it definitely it is and it will it's obviously always down to you in terms of the the make or break kind of thing but if you've got that supportive people there that you can just ask questions to and just get a bit of guidance on it I think the thing with it is always in your mind what one thing I always say to Brokers when they're first starting out is that this is an industry as a and this is a role that you will never know everything about your job you would there is no sort of book I'd love I always I'd love to get where but it's constantly changing you've got there's no book there so said this how you become a mortgage broker this is how you be be a mortgage broker there are no books out there so you've got to find your own way and there is a lot of help and support with regards to product knowledge placing cases there is a lot of it technology out there that can help you with all those things reaching out to other mortgage brokers you want to be asking them questions that you cannot find the answer to yourself so cultures values what's it like being part of this network or what's it part like working for this firm or what's it like being self-employed they're all things that you're not going to be able to find the answer to from technology from knowledge bank or criteria hope or morgage what what all the systems that mortgage brokers use but just just think about when you're wanting to know the answer to something is it something you can find out yourself generally if it is don't ask the question don't waste your don't waste that time and energy because you'll become known as the broker that's asking the questions that you can actually find out the answer yourself so you just can't be bother basically that's what you're saying to other brok whereas the true questions you should be asking is like what is it like day today being a broker what is it what are the what's it like what's the first month what what's the first three months like what's the six month what does what earnings is a difficult one but all these Brokers will help and share with you with their experiences just to try and put you on the right path so you use the use your questions wisely don't waste them if that makes sense yeah it does make sense and I know for my myself I see this a lot within the within those the Facebook groups and things as people that is notoriously known for the ones who have wasted time in there and actually you end up looking quite incompetent and I think it's a little bit like you say the boy that cry wolf if you say too much all the time you can end up when you do need help the really valuable people don't I have it with myself I'm sure you do yourself where people reach out to me all the time I have the same names who reach out to me all the time from both of our careers away from this Channel and it is one of those where you go oh you've exhausted it whereas there are certain people who I've got a very good relationship with you are one of them me and you have that good relationship where if you reach out to me I'll do whatever you really ask that I all the time we chats and talks it's vice versa because you know that it's as you say that the person you've built that trust and I think that it's not also about it's not always about parting money and giving money to people it's and like providing leads and all of the stuff that you see people do I think it is just as you say about building good relationships absolutely and they trust a big thing there so you and you want to be when you're building these relationss you want to surround like we talked about before about surrounding yourself with the right likeminded people who are no good talk going into a group that's all negative and you look at the comments and all negativity and complaining and winding and moaning if you're going to go on that group and then ask a question about what is this the chances are are you going to get back negative mourning winging kind of feedback so you got to be selective in terms of the group as well but it's about connecting with those l so if you seen those people who are posting about the industry and positivity and and that and you coming into something that is it's a challenge in industry a very positive one you want to be connected asking the questions to what the people that are loving doing what they're doing and there are plenty of people out there Brokers out there that will be sharing on social media their Journeys what's working what's done what going and they're the people that you should be connecting with not the ones that are winging and morning day and day out which we see we do see
