THE GOOD NEWS HERE, NO ONE WAS HURT. >> WELL, EARLIER TODAY FOR HOURS SYSTEMS THAT WE RELY ON DURING AN EMERGENCY WERE DOWN IN PORTLAND. NOW THINGS ARE BACK UP AND RUNNING. THE CITY SAYS IT REPAIRED AN INTERNET OUTAGE IMPACTING PORTLAND POLICE FIRE TEXT TO 9-1-1, AND PERMITTING SYSTEMS. JOEL JONES IS LIVE TONIGHT LOOKING INTO WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED. SO AT THIS POINT, WHAT ARE YOU ABLE TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS? JOEL? >> BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET TO THIS VERY COMPLICATED, PERFECT STORM IN A MOMENT. BUT I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT WE DID REACH OUT TO EMERGENCY RESPONSE OFFICIALS WHO WERE UNABLE TO SPEAK WITH US ON CAMERA AS THEY WORK TO GET THE SYSTEMS BACK ON LINE. AND WE'RE ABOUT TO SHOW YOU THE MESSAGE THAT PEOPLE RECEIVED AS THEY TEXT TO 9-1-1, DURING THIS OUTAGE, AN OUTAGE THAT PORTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE TELLS US HAD THEIR CREWS GOING OLD SCHOOL AS THEY WORK RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES. >> FOR ONE OF I DON'T HAVE A BMI OF BECAUSE OF THE VERY RIGHT. ALL THE ENTITIES ARE DOWN RIGHT NOW FROM DOWD EMERGENCY DISPATCH SYSTEMS TO CITY PERMITTING SERVICES AND DISRUPTIONS TO COUNCIL MEETINGS. >> STARTED WHEN THE IT DOESN'T GO BACK WITH EURO FIREWALL THAT SOME WHO IS FULL EFFECT AS KIND OF LIKE LISTENING TO A CALL DRIVING DOWN. I-5 EMERGENCY SYSTEMS BACK ONLINE AFTER AN INTERNET OUTAGE IMPACTED SEVERAL PORTLAND OFFICE DISABLING TEXT TO 9-1-1, FOR MORE THAN 5 HOURS STARTING AT 6.30, THIS MORNING, THE BUREAU OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TELLS US THE OUTAGE WAS CAUSED BY A TRIO OF UNLIKELY AN UNRELATED EVENTS, INCLUDING A FIBER OPTIC CABLE, KNOCKING OUT A PRIMARY PATHWAY FOR INTERNET SERVICE. WELL, AS SECONDARY PATH WAS IMPACTED BY A PG E POWER OUTAGE AND A BACKUP GENERATOR WAS OFFLINE FOR REPAIRS. PERFECT STORMS OCCUR. UNFORTUNATELY. PORTLAND FIRE. WE STARTED. >> ANALOG ARCHAIC WRITING THINGS BY WE COULD REVERT BACK TO THAT PRETTY EASILY. PORTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE SAYS DESPITE HEAVY RADIO TRAFFIC AND A BACKLOG AND UPLOADING MEDICAL INFORMATION. >> CREWS WERE ABLE TO RESPOND TO EVERY CALL DURING THE PERFECT STORM. POWER OUTAGE IN COMPUTER PROBLEM DIDN'T AFFECT THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE CALLS. IT AFFECTED THE ABILITY TO SORT OF SEND OTHER THINGS ELECTRONICALLY. SO WE WERE ABLE TO JUST SIMPLY GO BACK TO RADIOS AND MATT BOOKS. THE BUREAU OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SAYS THE CITY'S RELAY SYSTEM AND ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING DISABILITIES WERE FUNCTIONING DURING THE OUTAGE WITH NO IMPACTS TO 9-1-1. CALL TIMES FOR US TO OPERATE MINUTE BY MINUTE. WE DON'T NECESSARILY NEED THE FIBER OPTIC CABLE AND THE POWER WE CAN GET IT DONE. >> AND MAYOR TED WHEELER TOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO PRAISE TECH AND EMERGENCY WORKERS FOR THEIR QUICK RESPONSE TO ALL OF THIS.
