Kate Upton Didn’t Know What She Was Signing Up For As a Baseball Wife

[Music] all right everyone we are here with a very special guest we are joined by the legendary Kate Upton thank you so much for joining us thank you so much for having me we're super excited to talk all things that you've been up to lately um but you have a new show you're hosting dress my tour it's going to be out on Hulu um more the fashion the fashion route yes yes dress my tour is these designers that are competing to be the next performance design for musicians so there's a big it's not just the fashion it's also this performance aspect in this stage fashion which is very different from ready to wear it's it's very fun it's you know it has um dancers instead of a Runway so you can see the functionality of the piece and yeah it's really fun right it's like um it's you know it's it's kind of costume design you know but like you know obviously you have a costume design for movies and things like that but OB you know musicians artists costume changes when they're up on stage different outfits all those things or like a you know a surprise you know underneath like a Ral like there's all these different stage moments that you don't realize but how do people do that these designers and it's it's really cool because these musicians collaborate and they're telling a story like we see it with tayor Swift's tour through their costumes and they're you know continuing the story of their song through through their outfits on stage and so we have musicians there talking to these designers to see if um they could collaborate with them yeah and so obviously you started off as a model always been like in the Fashion World you've been a guest judge on other shows as well are you super excited to be like the host of this show yes I'm so excited it's such it's such a fun show with that stage element and the performance element it adds this extra like EXP erience to the show and drama um but hosting is so different like solo hosting that I was really I was really glad to have such an awesome team around me like lauan Gibson and Marina toybina and laurianne has done this a bunch of other times and so she's so quick with the remarks and really a great mentor it was nice to be able to lean on some experts in it yeah did you take any coaching for for hosting I've done I've done hosting in the past and I've I have worked with a coach in the past um but you know it's there's nothing like doing it yeah yeah yeah especially and adding your own personality your own flare right because it's hosting for you live events and things like that like this it's different when you're for like a unscripted show and with Hulu you know there's I don't know if I'm allowed to say this but they won't bargeon right we'll cut it if it's man through the there's like a team of lawyers involved too and so it's not as spontaneous as like just bringing your personality so there's a some awesome celebrities that are involved that are you know getting dressed and having that experience and guest judging who really stuck out to you like what was your favorite kind of one to work with or saw that I mean we had so many we had Jojo sewa and um K La Ray Paula Abdul Tony braaton but I think working with Paula Abdul who's not only such a legendary dancer but performer musician and also judge like to have that really like expert onet and she knows how to do all of this was really special and she was so kind we just had joj siwa in our studio for for an interview and she came in she was basically covered in dirt yeah bedazzled construction worker like by her choice it was part of the outfit the construction worker covered in dirt like bedazzled like the whole thing so I got imagine coming up with outfits for Jojo or JoJo even just dressing people or judging people she's she's judged as well yes but um and she grew up in it she grew up in this competitive Series right with dancing as well it adds all the layers yeah exactly she was really good yeah I I she is fascinating so and and we and her fashion choices are as well how different musicians fashion is once like once now after doing this show I'll I can never un see it I'm like oh it is so different it is you know them yep and they take the stage into they're ready to wear Y and you see all the talent from the designers to the Musicians the dancers like just all over the place you just recently came back for Sports Illustrated the 60th anniversary issue I think people were so stoked because you have some of the most iconic covers of all time um you know just reading up on your career I feel like it's so crazy because you know we all knew when you took off like we saw your career blooming um but I didn't realize how young you were when you started my God yes like I mean you you get what I mean like you're obviously still very young but like to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated when you're 19 years old is insane right yes it it is I I honestly feel like I've lived three different lives because of that because of the um you know really like my childhood and starting my career and then being on the cover started like a new life because I was so young and I was still really figuring out who I was and then I was you know thrusted on this platform where people wanted me to talk about who I was and really like working through through that live but I think having that experience really you know helps me understand what kids today are experiencing with putting that Persona out there on social media so young and creating this narrative about who they are before you really figure out who you are and what you stand for right yeah because true it's so true and and originally people just saw you from photographs and they wanted to know more and then you got into acting and like everything just started going crazy with your career but you started way before that yes I started modeling when I was 15 years old and um I I actually just thought back on this you know doing talking about dress my tour somebody asked me about this but I walked in on an open open casting call in Miami and I really wanted to travel and they booked me this job in Peru for the next day but I didn't have a passport wow and I think back to that and now like I've shot I've been to all seven continents with Sports Illustrated I was you know the first fashion shoot in Antarctica and it's like it's such a full circle moment like I I did it I traveled to so many places and got to see all these cultures so you just walked into the casting like you wanted to be a model at 15 and you were like I'm just going to show up to this casting yeah and I think my mom let me cuz I really think that she thought they would say no was like sure yeah go ahead yeah yeah oh okay you could try that yeah and then they were like Mom they want me to go to Peru she was like you don't have a passport you can't go and from that moment when you said you didn't have a passport were they still like okay but you know we want you like we're going to sign you and put you out there so when can you get the passport so I still did the job right they just rushed my passport that's incredible it's crazy the the strings that can be pulled when they passp and it take three months yeah exactly and then all of a sudden people get their passport in two days exactly well I mean that's such an incredible journey because from like one day you're just you know a normal girl like you have a dream you're like oh I want to be a model let me show up to this casting and then the next day you're you're going to Peru and then from there did everything just change for you yes everything changed I um started doing High School online cuz I was 15 and ended up moving to Miami and it wasn't an immediate decision but I was working every single day and I was missing so much school they decided to um switch that to be online and then um yeah then everything just you know that's insane did you feel that because like like R was just saying with modeling especially print and the amount of time it took for you to blow like it happened so fast did you feel like people kind of made a personality for you like they were like looking at they were like oh well this is her picture this is probably this is who she is like did you have to fight against that a little bit I did and it was really hard because media has changed so much from you know from back then aging years back then um but yes you know you would go and I almost felt that they had the article pre-written and they just needed quotes and you like I still will feel that sometimes but very rarely cuz now there's more platforms like this which is long form and you can actually talk but they really that was the hardest thing being 19 and having them really want me to say a certain thing and be a certain person because it's easier for them to write the article if I was yeah and to for me to be like should I put this image on like is this just easier if I just say what they want me to say and move on or am I myself like what do I do with this and I got some really great advice from a lot of people because there's you know really when I Shot The Other Woman Cameron and Leslie really helped to me and gave me a lot of advice like don't separate the people like who you are in the image of you because that's really when the depression starts and that was really true for me that is when the Depression started and that helped me kind of not only claim my career but claim my power you know I love hearing that they gave you advice um we love that movie we really do love that movie seen that movie maybe 50 times like it is so good what kind of what gave you the acting bug well I took I actually started taking acting lessons when I was about 18 so I did it for years and um I was I became very overwhelmed with my modeling career and so wasn't able to kind of go into the grind of acting as well and I was really in the grind of figuring out who I was so I wasn't I wasn't sure if I was ready to play another character yeah but then um this opportunity came and I was I was so excited about it I was such a massive Cameron Diaz and Leslie van fan so um I was thrilled to be able to work with them yeah I mean the it's just a great movie like and and they're both incredible actresses I think everybody is just a massive both yeah yeah you I feel like you can really feel like their personalities um you know sometimes I feel like when you're watching a movie and you're such a big fan of somebody but you don't see much of them like with with Leslie man and Cameron Diaz like I feel like I know them but I don't they just feel like they could give the best such they give you like a real a nice hug and and give you some advice yeah they're real people they want to like sit down and and get to know you and they have they're absolute Legends they have years and years of experience in the industry and totally they you know I was really excited to hear what their advice would be yeah so now with social media and you've mentioned this like you know young people starting out and they go viral a ton like you know the word viral is used a ton nowadays but I feel like you went viral before viral like was such a thing you know like so like so many videos and pictures I mean the the cat daddy video like was like one of the most viral like I wouldn't even you know just used over and over again what was your reaction back then to that sort of happening were you like oh my God this is so cool or like wo like let's slow it down oh I was scared to death like all of the above I was scared from the very beginning cuz it was just felt like I was on this roller coaster that I didn't know was starting right you know back then and now it's like I understand it it's so cool but it back then it's like I didn't I wasn't prepared nobody around me was prepared like it's not like I had a team or my agents knew what to do nobody knew what to do so I was very like unprotected and and nervous and didn't know how to handle it and at the time too like models didn't really become household names or it been years since one had and you didn't have access to them like the viral videos and social media created so it I didn't know that that could happen in my career right and it was at a time when the internet like really because I think like Instagram started around that time Twitter all of that so Instagram hadn't started yet it was just Twitter right so then things start picking up and I think it's a whole universe that people didn't understand yet totally no it definitely it definitely is and like you said like you have been you started modeling so young you have worked with some of the biggest brands the biggest campaigns the most notorious like magazines and world-renowned magazines what is the next like dream model modeling job for you do you have one do you think I think that um like you said I got to work with all of these greats like it was at this time where they were it you know they hadn't retired yet or you know unfortunately like passed away or left the industry yet and so I got to work with these Legends I got to see old fashion and then also be a part of the new fashion with social media and how that's created and I think that in between time a lot of the creativity was lost L it w it started becoming very much like just show up and be yourself just smile and be yourself I was like that's not really why I did shoots like I did shoots like create characters and you know figure out who would wear this all latex dress like where would they be and now they're like no just take a selfie on your phone I'm like that's not what I would wear my house on my phone um so it started losing its creativity I I feel like it's starting to come back like the creativity so for me I want to be a part of that I want to do you know fun creative jobs while still you know still talking about the messaging that really matters to me which is pushing that women to love themselves and not feel like they need all these filters or plastic surgeries to love themselves yeah totally and I and I feel like like you mentioned the creativity is coming back around I feel like cuz people are craving it like I think people are just craving you know like when you look back on your shoots and you see just the the places that you've traveled to and the backgrounds that really capture an image but you standing at the Forefront is like a whole other world yeah and like we stopped going on you know location we' we stopped doing all that I and maybe Co had something to do with that a little bit where they realized they can do shoots from home and you know people were trying to get creative during that time and now people are like well we don't have to leave our house and it's like we all got to get back out there I promise you guys those Zoom shoots don't hit the same yeah no they certainly do not with the with the glaciers in the back those shoots exactly no that's very true and being on the 60th anniversary cover for SI swim what has that Journey been like just for you in the evolution of Si swim because from it it doesn't feel like it's been that much time but from when you were on the cover to now the conversation around SI swim has changed so much and and for the better how do you feel about how it's kind of changed I mean it's it's amazing it's really incredible to see what MJ day and her team has been able to take the magazine to um it also makes you know I've been talking about how hard it was when I was young but then once I started understanding it it became something I was like why is this weird like why is this a conversation we're having that you know somebody can be talking about my body in general or talking about about it how they are and um why aren't women stepping in their power and owning who they are more and MJ took that messaging and has brought it to a whole other place and to come back for the 60th and really see who's a part of of the conversation now and to do that Legend shoe and meet some of those women has just been really incredible yeah truly so iconic yeah so so cool I think everyone was so excited to see that um how has it been with the other um the new women that have become a part of Si have they come to you for advice like just how you got advice from Cameron Dias and Leslie man like are the models coming to you like Kate how do we do this um well I feel like modeling is so different where we don't shoot together a lot of times so we see each other at the launch and it's kind of you know already done and crazy yeah so some of them have come up and talked to me or talk to me about you know their journey of finding themselves or their body image but you know it's so different cuz on set I you know hung out with Leslie and Cameron for three months right right and saw them every day like they knew everything about me they knew my cycle you know yeah you all started linking up exactly yeah exactly um modeling acting hosting you are a mom you have I feel like you know we see kind of going back to these viral moments right they're like oh we got we got Kate in the stands at the games all these things like just and you and you go hard and I appreciate that I appreciate that and that's how it should be I think everybody appreciates it but what's like the the kind of the the baseball the wife life like um it is being a baseball wife is absolutely insane like the schedule is wild it's so long I didn't know I didn't know I accidentally fell in love I had no idea that there were I'm sorry wait there's how many games yeah I was like wait I thought this was like a cute like summer thing months baseball season it's summer like this is eight months there's they're doing 163 games no off day no consecutive off days only Mondays and Thursdays it's my favorite this is I'm like I don't see him yeah um so especially when you start getting into late playoffs when the baseball is so exciting but you're like I haven't seen my husband in a month like they better win it's better be worth it yeah he put in all this work without seeing me and he is the winner so that is yes exactly and being a big a big part being a pitcher's wife is probably a whole other animal cuz it's like there's a lot there you know yeah how are you watching games like are you like is it anxiety inducing or are you chill yeah well I you know I feel like it is there's a ton of anxiety it's it's strange because you have no I have no control and that's was something when we first started dating I had to get used to cuz in my career you know I I have the control I I eat the failure whatever it is like if I say something wrong like that's on me but to watch someone you love out there and have no control it was a totally new EXP experience and so it it already started this nervous energy running through me like oh no there's nothing I can do yeah um and you want them to do well you want them to feel good like you know he's my husband I want him to come home and be happy and not be disappointed in how he played or what happened so ultimately like I always say I'm there for the emotional support usually not like the logistics like I don't know yeah what bal's going to throw you're not like getting your mid out like really get a little more lift on your although I do one of my closest friends is Amy Cole she's married to a Yankees pitcher and she was is a phenomenal softball player and so she went out there a few times and like caught for her husband I'm like yeah Justin that's not happening you got to call Amy up that's funny I will I will cheer for you I will support from afar but I am not your catcher like wait are there are there times when like you see maybe the picture the video after a game that's gotten some internet traction of you that you're like oh my god I didn't even realize I did that no yeah also when you're sitting in the suite you're like oh no like up like yeah yeah up up my chin why like where even are you why do they hate me can we get a drone yes oh yeah the stadium lighting Stadium give me a c to look down hilarious jump like now with hosting and doing dress my tour is like hosting unscripted like did you kind of get that bug because I just feel like that's got to be such a fun job to to want to do yeah it's so fun it's so hard like I I didn't really realize how how many layers you're almost like the on screen showrunner like you're really managing the timing of things and for the flow like to make sure the show is paced right yeah and like being a season one there isn't a set Pace right so you're really kind of trying to find that make the rules yeah well but there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen y y y you're setting the pace with the help of others exactly exactly so it was um I kept joking on set you know the second to last episode I'm like guys I figured out how to do it I finally figured it out well that's when you say so they're so season two right like I got it you're like I've got this figured out so season two will be know fly through this yeah exactly oh that's amazing and do you have anything next like what's next after dress my tour um well girl I'm hoping to go on vacation yeah and that is it's the summer yeah perfectly acceptable answer we appreciate a vacation yeah we do like we absolutely do and a vacation is always right like August yeah I'm like do I have to stay in the seat yeah
