the Packers released their 53 man roster on Tuesday we give you our gut reactions the Packers make moves now and for the [Music] future Ming Ain no ER baby new er all right everybody welcome back uh this is sounds guda the all things Packers podcast and my name is Jordan Olen uh my co-host here is Rob Ral um we thank you for being here with us to our new and returning listeners and we are excited to be talking Packers football with you all again um big week for the Packers lot of news in the last 24 hours um so we are excited to get things going um so 53 man roster predictions uh or sorry roster takes Rob what is your uh got reaction after the 53 man roster got released earlier today yeah uh there was a lot of moving Parts uh to this one more than I can remember um at least in recent memory um I think some of the biggest ones that come to my head first with uh is Anthony Johnson Jr um not making it now I totally understand wanting to put a Zay Anderson over um Anthony Johnson Jr uh spe specifically a really good uh core special teamer um you know I don't know how much Anthony Johnson Jr would a really uh solid the field over you know the McKenna the Williams um the Bullard and then you have a devel developmental one in Katan alapo so um but that one he still played really well during the preseason I think he's one of the top graded um safeties too as well I think he was getting reps and OTAs too with the with the first team as as well um going on to year two so that one was a little bit of surprise to me I'll say uh I really wanted Christian Welch Mr Hometown Wisconsin man to uh to really make the roster um he was one I think he was one if if not the highest uh graded Defenders uh throughout the preseason seemed like he's always consistently um making a play or a turnover um was really good um and the Run stop and then the passing game to as well and then two also another really good uh core team or too as well um so that one um we were kind of hoping a little bit but totally understand the route that they went to with that and you know should be back on the practice squad too um AJ Dylan my boy the mayor of dor County uh you know if you all was listening to a few episodes uh from us over uh this last few months that we've been doing that um I thought AJ Dylan was really going to have a bounceback season um but apparently um that was that wasn't what the Packers thought and the Stinger was a lot more serious too um as he went on the IR season ending list um he should like he should probably get an injury settlement too I probably would expect that to happen but a lot more serious um than was led on to for that too as well so my boy AJ Dylan going down that kind of hurt um yeah that was some of my initial gut reactions Jordan what about you yeah I mean you unpacked a lot of the big headlines there right I think um as we kind of said in the show the show intro um some of the moves the Packers made uh I think really highlight a change in philosophy right now um and I think that the Packers made some moves that indicate that they are ready to win in the next two years so um goody kind of played the game with Aaron roders on the roster that we are always forward thinking we always always making moves that have the following seasons in mind and while there were plenty of those apparent on this roster um he did make some moves that clearly highlighted that um you know certain players can contribute um early in the season or in situations that are going to make a difference you know Greg Joseph I think over Andre Carlson which Andre Carlson is one of his draft picks hand selected by the Packers staff rich bace um he chose to bring in Greg Joseph they made that a real kicking competition and ultimately I believe that they think Craig Joseph is going to make the easy kicks the slam dunks and the stuff within 40 yards um they probably figured if a guy is gonna be have question marks outside of 45 we at least need to count on them to make the easy ones and that's probably why Greg Joseph at least for now has has won this job in this kicking battle um you know with the the move they made for Malik Heath and we're going to talk about that more extensively here in a minute um that saw Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt both cut we'll see if either or both come back onto the practice squad I kind of highly doubt that both will be back um but early reports are from Rob damasi and some of the other guys out there that there is a preference for um Sean lifor to be the guy that they bring back on the practice squad um if that's the case um I really think that that indicates that obviously Malik Heath is not ready to maybe make an impact or start or fill in in week one two or three and they probably have a lot more confidence if if Jordan love got hurt in week one of Shan Clifford stepping in week two week three and having a better chance to win those games um and the fact that they'd be trying to win those games in week two or week three over preparing for the future really signals to me that we're we're going for a Super Bowl in the next two windows here or the next two years here so um the time is now yeah I think you said Malik Heath but you meant Malik Willis right yes Malik Willis sorry there's been a lot of talk about Malik Heath out there um and you know he had a great preseason and since the last time we checked in on the 53 man roster gave our predictions um he's gone out had two great games and and Malik Heath has earned a spot on this roster but yes Malik Willis the quarterback from the Tennessee Titans that the Packers traded a seventh rounder for Rob you want to give your reactions around that deal yeah I mean both with the first name of Malik right so after some long weeks at at work and different stuff you know we're always one here to uh uh mess up a name or two and and that's probably more for me than it is from Jordan so I'll I'll take the that one for that too but my turn to take the the name lump there yeah my my brain is mush I have been working like 10 consecutive days now going to bed at like midnight waking up at like 6:00 a.m. which I guess for most people like that's probably something easy to handle but with having a six-month year old son at home that sleep hasn't essentially been uh all a solid six hours a night either so yeah yes well welcome welcome to to family to having a kid right too so yeah definitely for sure so yeah Malik Willis um overall reactions I think he is um he's got a lot more upside I really really uh liked his uh College tape coming out of Liberty quite a bit um that was not a really good draft class that year too if I'm remembering correctly um I I see some in consistencies with him for sure um but I can also see uh why the Packers like him I think it's definitely going to be a lot different if something hap does happen with the Jordan love um and um you know he goes down I think you're going to see a lot more rpos or run pass options I think he was showing that quite a bit um in this preseason too I think he had was it four four runs of 10 or more yards um so he's quite athletic um Tennessee is also too probably not the greatest situation for him for him to thrive in um so I mean he can take a lot of sacks to as well uh I believe he did have a first round grade on him too coming out um so I I mean they have Jordan love locked up right so they have the time for Tom Clemens and crew to be able to you know work some magic on him and and develop him uh correctly um so I'm I'm excited for what he can do um I think at times you know you're going to see him make some really really nice throws and then at some other times too you're going to see him uh miss you know wide open wide receivers um so there's just a lot of inconsistencies there that need to be short up but as far as like um the ceiling of what he could do for the Packers if he um you know gets developed correctly I think it's quite High um but still I was I was a little bit shocked um I was a little bit shocked I thought you know PR probably would have made it as a little bit more of the um quarterback 2 having a little bit more potential than aan Clifford who had really struggled this this preseason but um some of my initial thoughts what are what are your thoughts too on Malik yeah you know the value of the trade I I like a lot you know the fact that you can get um hopefully what you consider to be a high-end backup um you know a former you know highly touted Prospect somebody who thought might be a first round grade get a fresh start um I I think it's a good move um I think you alluded to that the situation in Tennessee was maybe not the best for him I think about the offensive line that he had to play behind um obviously um you know getting drafted thinking he could be the future quarterback for the Titans you know the following year they go out and they draft will Levis um you know then there's no offensive weapons to speak of really outside of Derrick Henry on that roster um just really and then you know all the coaching changes and turmoil there too so um hopefully he enters an organization that knows how to develop quarterbacks well um and can really kind of develop some of those tools that uh that people saw in him as a prospect you know I think we were looking at some of his comparisons in our preow talk and uh Jaylen Herz came up and I kind of like that like he can be like Jaylen Herz light you know he's a little bit of a dual threat quarterback he does have a strong arm um I think there's potential there and uh you know I don't know that he's GNA be ready to contribute these first three weeks so I can hope and really I mean if Jordan love gets hurt our season's going to go down the tube anyways if he spends any kind of significant time on the IR missing games um so I hope we don't see I hope we don't need to see Malik Willis at all um but if we do for a short period of time hopefully it's not for a couple weeks until he can get his toes wet but uh good move I I like it and I really hope to see Pratt back on the practice squad as a a developmental guy as well because I do think there is something there with him yeah absolutely um so uh speaking of that um I think we're going to go ahead and want to to share um our screen here just for a second and for all you audio listeners just know that we are um going to be sharing this and just go over some of our initial ones that we gave um couple weeks ago um and then also the one that just came out today yeah so I mean a lot of you will have seen this re this 53 man roster in a variety of ways we like to have the visual right but uh ultimately the Packers go with two quarterbacks and Jordan love and Malik Willis three running backs and Josh Jacobs marshan Lloyd um and Emanuel Wilson six wide receivers um this is where I mean obviously we talked about Emanuel Wilson but with AJ Dylan going on the IR that really paved the way there there were even some reports in the last couple days that um Marshon Lloyd might be the guy to go on the IR with a designation to return um but he must be healthy enough or close enough where they feel good about him starting on the regular 53 um and then we there's been a lot of conversation about how many wide receivers they would keep six would they keep seven um would it be Heath would it be debose and in the end it was it was Malik Heath and he really bowled out the last couple weeks to earn that spot over over Grant too um I really think that deos there's still something there I hope he can make the practice squad um tight end Luke Musgrave Tucker craft and Ben Sims make the roster um Tyler Davis is always also finding himself on E season ending IR um and then they do take 10 offensive linemen the five projected starters in Walker Jenkins Myers Morgan and Tom um sha Ryan um and Jacob monk have obviously played very well on the interior throughout most of the preseason so no surprise there and then Kadeem Telford um making it as tackle and then Travis Glover and uh and Dillard rounding out that that group so um any any big Shockers there on the offensive side that we haven't really talked about um you want to talk about wide receiver battle or anything like that Rob uh I mean yeah no Malik Heath um making the roster totally makes sense the last couple weeks he's just been uh lights out been playing really well um really happy to see Emanuel Wilson you know the last two preseason I think last preseason he was the leading rusher I'm pretty sure this year he was pretty close up to that too as well and um he he's just a really good running back so um really sad to see uh AJ Dylan go on season ending to IR but really really happy too for Emanuel Wilson and what he can uh do for this roster um so you know we've had the conversation too and and who's going to be our swing tackle right so it's kind of interesting I know Dillard had some issues um specifically I think it was over a right tackle I think when they moved him over at left tackle he ended up doing a lot better not going to say he was really good but he did ended up doing a lot better and then you have a Kadeem telfor here who played both left and right tackle so I think that's kind of like how do you see that one playing out because I I think if if like rashed Walker Were Somehow to go out do you think they end up putting uh uh the Dillard Dillard over there with the experience over there at left tackle or do you think they throw on a tord or how do you my kind of question for you is how do you think this how do you find the swing tackle uh position working out for [Music] them yeah that's a great question there have been some reports out there that the Packers swing tackle might not be currently on the roster and if that's the case I I could easily see a guy like Andre Dillard being cut um and replaced with another veteran who who gets cut loose through these cuts and I haven't been around um the all of the cuts that have made been made throughout the league so I don't really have a name to attached to you know as a projection right now but I do expect them to look at that um see where there might be a veteran that would make sense as a swing tackle um if the roster Remains the way it is I can see Dillard being the the fill in at left tackle I I like what Kadeem tort brings to the table um but I don't know I I don't have a really strong answer for that other than I do find it intriguing that the Packers seemingly might be kicking the tires on bringing another offensive veteran offensive lineman in um and seem to be content developing a few guys that they'll probably send to the practice squad um yeah for sure I was just gonna say uh and out of those two um out of the offensive line specifically I'm really really excited for Jacob monk um really loved him coming out of Duke obviously played multiple positions um I think he absolutely balled out there's a lot of learning opportunities for him to but really like what they were doing with you alluded to it too as well but uh Shan Ryan and monk too giving them some different runs and splitting them from you know positions one would play center one would play Right Guard I think even some may have played left guard maybe a little bit too as well but super excited for what he can do for us yeah so uh rob you want to run us through the uh the defensive players that made the 53 yeah defense baby let's go all right so defensive tackle Rob loves his defense yes I do probably a little too much uh Kenny Kenny Clark Devonte Wyatt TJ Slayton uh Carl Brooks uh Colby wooden um and then my boy uh he is on IR right now but I on with designated to return Jonathan Ford um if you're hearing any sort of the episodes that we've had from before I've been hammering on the ball saying that Jonathan Ford um I thought has shown up and shown out quite a bit and it looks like the Packers feel the same way so um for right now he's uh he's on the roster at least on IR designated to return um defensive end of course ran Gary and I think this one was a big surprise too for a lot of people um rashan Gary Preston Smith uh Lucas vaness and Kingsley and egbari as like your your top four um realistically you know like ran Gary and Preston Smith are going to be your starters there as the one two kind of uh combo with veness and anbari spelling them but um a lot of people you're we talking through too and we can go through our initial um sheet too as well just to check out like what we had here for the defensive ends but keeping six defensive ends um I can't imagine that we were talking about this too that they'll keep them all live and active for game day um specifically I'm not sure if Brenton Cox Jr or Aaron Mosby has any um special teams experience I think maybe Mosby on that you can correct me if I'm wrong Jordan but I find that one to be kind of an interesting type of question um exactly what they're going to do keeping six defensive end specifically um on that but uh what you have any thoughts as far as them keeping this mini Jordan I mean Aaron Mosby played himself into a roster spot right and I think that I think when we talk about the linebackers next and that was one of the big surprises I mean it's a surprise but not a surprise but Christian Welch you know he he earned a spot on this team um I was pulling for him but it is a numbers game they can only have 53 people on um and they probably had to make a choice between a a Mosby and a Christian Welch in that situation um you know the fact just from a numbers game right I think the only position that changed for us in terms of projection I think we projected three QBs um that extra QB turned into a defensive end here could have easily been a corner could have easily been another safety if they would have wanted to go heavy there in the Special Teams linebacker um but they see something in Mosby I don't blame him um I'm excited about what he can bring to the team and uh you know I I like the back end of that room this is likely Preston Smith's last season as a packer I mean you could project that um but we still have plenty of depth and and upside in that room moving forward so he's already better cornerback than Preston Smith too with his big interception for yes yeah um all right so linebacker then to obviously Quay wer I Isaiah McDuffy Edan Cooper Tyron Hopper uh and Eric Wilson um you just alluded to the qu the Christian Walch there too as well so I won't speak on that quarterback I got some um some interesting ones or two at least from our initial one that we had um so gyro xer Eric Stokes Kean Nixon uh Valentine but then Corey Balentine um over somebody like Rob was really hammering on the ball for and a Robert Rochelle so um I was wrong on that I will thoroughly raise my hand and admit that um I thought Rochelle kind of dwindled off just a little bit um but I still thought he he put out a lot of good tape but obviously they went with somebody with some really good experience um in playing for the Packers last year so any thoughts on that yeah I mean ultimately Cory Valentine's experience last year I mean I think carried a lot of weight coming into this this preseason and ultimately this decision I think Robert relle did get a b a little banged up at the end of the preseason there too which which might have influenced that decision but I don't know my gut I mean you and I went back and forth like all pregame show before we did our 53 man and that was one that was really a sticking point for us I think I was a little bit more on Valentine and yes you were um you know relle had a great game against the Browns and he he played very well on special teams um I think the biggest thing for corner and actually I think if they were you know they kind of kept five across the board for all defensive positions essentially five D tackles five linebackers Five Corners five safeties and six D ends I actually thought that there was a chance if they were going to keep six in one spot that it was going to be in the cornerback cor back yeah um and keep kin king so I'm very concerned about retaining kin King at this point in time probably uh debose and kayn King are probably my biggest hopes to sneak back onto the practice squad along with the likes of Anthony Johnson Jr and and maybe Michael Pratt um but I'll be very curious to see what happens there kayn King definitely had an up and down preseason had some great plays some some great things in Camp um had some blown coverages in some preseason games which you know we all got to see and that was put on tape but I still think there's a lot to like there with kin king um and I hope that they can get him back back onto the practice squad yeah ditto and that was another really good point too from the 53 man roster this is why I was saying and it was like man this one there's just so many different things to talk about which is great right um really good for us and in the show too but yeah I right kayin King uh really liked him coming out of college I really like what he was doing the preseason obviously some blown coverages which you're GNA get from any any rookie specifically a seventh seventh rounder like that um but also just some really really good plays too good tackling you saw it in the Ravens game uh tackled put his head in forced to Fumble I mean those type of plays right there can turn a game over right too so pros and cons to this too but yeah like you were saying I really hope he makes it back to the practice squad uh moving on to safety obviously uh Xavier mckenny uh Javon Bullard there with the starters uh then with Evan Williams who also had another really good preseason um specifically in Camp to uh Katan alapo who was injured for most of it but ended up coming back and um again had some es and flows a lot of inconsistencies but they really like what he can bring to the table and he's also a goody pick as well too so there's I think there's a lot more to come with that and then you know picking a Zayn Anderson which um we kind of all thought most Packers fans know he's probably the core special team player on the Packers if you're thinking of of one him and Welch specifically for me but um so I'm not surprised that they chose Zayn Anderson bhi's guy I think um over Anthony Johnson Jr who's probably wasn't gonna get a lot of rotation with your mckinnes your Bullards your Williams and your all in there as well so Zan Anderson I mean definitely earned a spot through the preseason he had some great games that I'm a little I'm a little scared that this is another uh you know levit situation dalen levit um a guy that is highly special teams oriented and then you know when he actually needs to play and game um as a safety because we've been decimated by injury that that that bites us a little bit um I'm less concerned though now because I mean we'd have to have some substant Sub sub some substantial injuries um across our depth chart there um to get you know to have McKenna Bullard Williams all out which are three I'm extremely comfortable with playing that safety role right now so um yeah um and then the specialist um again we talked about this a little bit earlier uh and and you talked about it in the pregame show we did today Rob but I 100% agree I think Andre Carlson lost his job on the very last kick he made of the preseason sealed his fate yeah I go ahead go ahead Rob I just gonna say it's too bad because I think that um there was a lot of chatter that you know he kind of re readjusted his plant foot and was changing his mechanics and you know like anybody and they I think even on the broadcast they talked about it's like changing your golf swing it's going to take almost an entire half a season or season for you to even become comfortable with that so I I think they that's a nice thought but I don't think that they were willing to potentially lose another game or two this season why he's trying to figure it out what what happens if you don't have a golf swing to begin with like me well then you're just out there drink drinking beer and having fun and that's that's cool too you know yeah yeah absolutely yeah I mean you feel bad for the kid but hey we've all seen a Carlson uh get cut before and then go on to do really really really good things Carlson so um you know there's still a lot of from him too but you're spot on you know you're changing your swing like that um you I don't even have a swing so I can't really talk on it but um yeah that's going to be really tough and too like you just you want the consisteny of knowing what Greg Joseph's GNA be and what he's going to be able to make and not make rather than the ABS of flows of like dude he can go out here um you know and miss this 32 y or whatever you know with a perfect snap and perfect conditions with a perfect hold you know so sealed his fate man but um I really hope that Greg Joseph you know doesn't miss any kicks in the playoffs specifically so we'll see and you know what we talked about it just as long as he can make the stuff from 40 and in and you know if you're going to take a gamble on the long ones anyways like at least let's count on those slam dunks and and you know like we we talked about it in our 12 keys to win the division right if you can even just make those extra points I mean we lost multiple games by two points or less that could that could be the difference between 13 wins and and 10 so um Daniel whan and Matt EK round out that that group of Specialists um you know obviously I was pulling for Peter Bowden um for no real reason other than he was a Wisconsin player and uh you know he was pretty highly touted as a a great Long Snapper Maybe argu the the best um long snapping Prospect to enter the NFL coming into the group you know this season but or Che beat him out um I hope that he has a really great season and that uh maybe he can find a place in Green Bay for the foreseeable future and and we don't have to talk about Long Snapper again for a long time because that's not the most exciting of conversations well before we move on to the practice squad prediction too um obviously you know this sucks for anybody to get cut and lose their job so you know that is terrible for any of these guys and the spe specifically the ones that don't you know get uh uh picked up by other teams or put it back on the practice squad but Public Enemy Number One wouldn't want to forget about that Royce Newman is officially gone Jordan what are what are your feelings on that it it was time and I agree Rob and and we probably haven't done a good enough job of saying that you know I mean who who is Olsson or Rob Ralph to talk about these guys you know obviously we we sit here in our chairs and and we talk football just like everybody else does around the water cooler in in their garage um but so you know I wish Royce Newman the best of luck I actually thought after his rookie season that he was gonna Ascend and he really just never got there um I hope he catches on with another team and I hope he does well I just hope it's not with the the Vikings bears lions or 49ers really so um but yeah um you know a couple other notable vets that were cut we talked about made a couple of these predictions before too but Sor Tay is no longer a packer I don't really expect him back on the Packers roster practice squad moving forward um you know Carlson so and then you know AJ Dylan with the IR and Tyler Davis with the IR designations Ian we can see them back as Packers but they're going to have to get their injury settlements um I don't know that either of those players were really hurt enough to to end their season so he probably will receive an injury settlement and then become a free agent so um we'll see what the roster looks like in seven eight weeks and and see if there's a place for one of those guys back on the team but um we'll wrap it up here with just giving these some practice squad predictions um on some of these guys we've already talked about but a few guys that I really hoped to see um I I don't know if all of those these guys will squeak back on the roster but some priority practice squad players for me anyways and I know Rob to uh Michael Pratt giving him more opportunity to develop in the system under Tom Clemens uh Grant deos I really think that uh he's just unfortunately was hurt all last preseason and Malik Heath just came and said you're not taking my job out from under me but I think there's a lot with Grant deos Caleb Jones Anthony Johnson Jr and kayin King we've talked about those guys but few other ones um I really I like Julian Hicks I think he flashed a little bit in the preseason I think he's a developmental guy um Joel Wilson too highly up and down had some great plays um had some bad grades but I think that he's a potential great um receiving developmental tight end um just because we're a little thin at running back I think they usually like to keep three I think Nate mccre and Ellis Maryweather um make it on to the practice squad for now Merryweather doesn't show like the greatest burst or cut in the world but I do think that he's a serviceable back that they could call up in the case of injury um Donovan Jennings Luke Tuda and uh I is it likeus Smith I I maybe in mispronouncing the the middle name on that guard but uh he played really well this year um I don't know if they'll bring Tuda back I know that they've been pretty high on him but um he just might be out of opportunities especially too if um if they do find another veteran that they bring on um if they do cut Dillard though I don't I don't likely see him back on the practice squad because I I don't see a much more seiling for him and in developing on that Squad so um and then couple linebackers you know Russell and Welsh obviously played really well throughout the preseason Benny sap and Spencer wagy as some couple guys and then Alex hail they can they have to officially cut him and then they can bring him back as the international designated player yeah yeah so um but yeah I think uh I think that's what we got for you on this uh 53 man roster recap um but now we're we're gonna get to to see real football here soon so yeah it's uh it's going to be really exciting so just some closing Notes too um the next time uh we we see the Packers again they are going to be on the field in Brazil um by the time this comes out yeah this Thursday um would be eight days away um and then you'll have regular Open Season night with the Ravens uh at the Chiefs on Thursday night too as well so I know that uh my vacation starts uh after tomorrow and I'm off uh the rest of the weekend throughout the whole next week uh I got some fantasy football drafts um as well too so just super super excited uh for all things football and specifically the Packers so just know to we will drop a week one pregame show before the season opener um um so and also that too we also have we're also going to be trying some other things too as well um possibly some live shows too uh after after some of these gam to get some of your guys's initial gut reactions um what you thought from the game um what the Packers did well what they didn't how they got beat how they got one etc etc whatever is just on your guys's mind so just know that we're uh going to be ramping that up a little bit to here for the season and we'll have some more of those shows too as well for you guys as well so um and also as well too we we'll want to see how the practice squad holds up and we hope uh some of our players that we think uh will get on there and we just highlighted uh to uh we'll return to the practice squad yeah um no new uh Public Sub subscribers we do have some new subscribers but none public but um as always you know thank you guys to our current subscribers for you guys um if any of
