Francisco to take on the 49ers and the Jets got a pretty big reality check I think from the 49ers losing that game 32 to19 in large part because of the standout performance from Jordan Mason a career night for Mason 28 carries 147 yards and a touchdown you look at that stat line and you think wow like the the 49ers really must have dominated the Jets but it really didn't start off that way honestly because both teams kind of went three and out to start both defenses looking pretty good right off of the bat and then the uh the Jets kind of strung a drive together they I think it was their second or third drive that they drove all the way down the field punched it in with Bree hall and then I'm thinking like wow like we might have a game here like the Jets come out here I guess surprised a lot of people by scoring first and now they're up but then slowly as the game went on I think the 49 ERS found more of their spots found more ways to attack this Jets defense that we will talk about a little bit later but as the game went on like I mentioned they used the ground game a lot more Jordan Mason started building some momentum and confidence and also just off of that you guys know the the deal right when uh a running back or your running game is going initiating the offense you could do so much after that with play action you know bootlegs rolling out to either side just misdirect ing the defense because they are so focused in so aggressive to stop the run stop the bleeding that they overc commit over pursue and now the game is pretty much in your hands and that's really what the 49ers do so well and how they scheme everything up to Perfection so as much as it was Jordan Mason and all credit to him for taking advantage of the opportunity a lot of it again Falls to kou in a hand his play calling and also the 49ers defense bunkered down as the game went on even more making it a lot tougher for the Jets to get in some of those tighter throws you know credit to Aaron Rogers and Garrett Wilson both of them looking very good in their connection with some back shoulder throws on some contested 1V one catches you know that's what you're going to get you're going to get some of those throws from Aaron Rogers but the 49ers you know made it a lot more difficult as the game went on you saw that tipped interception that is a result of trying to force these tough throws and I think I say force and I use that word very lightly because it's not like Aaron Rogers and the Jets want to force tight throws right but that's what was given to them based on the game plan and the scheme presented by the 49ers new defensive coordinator Nick singon who was another winner of last night's game so I think they game planning which just really what stood out to me the most and continuing on with the 49ers you know with everything with how everything looked Brock p also had an efficient day um no problem without Christian mcaffrey right he steps out he is a last minute inactive player but Jordan Mason steps up right away and it looks like it looks like Christian mcaffrey was playing in that game based on the stat line you can only imagine what it would have looked like if he was playing in this game and on the defensive side as well I was pretty uh surprised with how much pressure Nick Bosa Leonard Floyd Javon hardgrave Malik Collins generated just on a fourman rush and a lot of times you know they brought in some more guys when they felt the need to Blitz but just those four guys alone I was surprised with how much pressure very quickly they were getting on Aaron roders especially Leonard Floyd and Nick Bosa off the edge of course we know who Nick Bosa is right it's not that big of a surprise but I felt like they were a little bit thin in that area and I wasn't sure how they were going to deal with the loss of Eric Armstead clearly they're just plugging and playing guys and they're not losing a beat so that's very reassuring for the 49ers defense and just based off of that um it's a little bit like the Kansas City Chiefs right on Thursday you know there's levels to this right you look at the Ravens team a contending team coming into this game against the Chiefs just going back to that Thursday game and you know you have a good back and forth game but eventually you look at what makes the Chiefs the Chiefs you know two-time defending Super Bowl champions and what makes the Ravens the Ravens right you see some of those mishaps pop up some of the sloppiness of some of the plays whereas the Chiefs and the 49ers don't really show that you know the coaching the players the scheming and everything it's all very organized and very efficient and that's why um we've seen this matchup so many times and why I think probably these two teams had the cleanest games out of anybody in week one but now as we move on to the Jets here uh some good and some bad right I'll start off with the bad I was disappointed I guess you could say with how vulnerable their defense looked especially in the Run game like again I mentioned Jordan Mason no shade to Jordan Mason but a lot of people probably didn't know how good he was to start the game or even who he was to start the game so to give him 28 carries you know that's fine with the 49ers want to use him that much but nearly 150 yards and he probably could have scored twice that's not something you're supposed to see from this Jets defense that heading into this year talked about all last year as being one of the elite defenses in the NFL um to just look this helpless in the Run game was a bit concerning for me um also a lot of wideopen guys as the game went on apart from the coverage from s Garner which is what you'd expect from him a lot of times there was a lot of wideopen guys down the middle of the field or in different Z zones down the sidelines and again it goes back to scheming these guys open and the 49ers do a great job of it right getting the Jets to overcommit sucking them into the offens OR to the uh line of scrimmage and then you know play action throwing it over uh these defensive backs but even still I would have liked to have seen a bit more resistance from the secondary um so again that could be fixed that could be addressed as we go on but to start off the year you know the defense overall I thought it would be more solid and I thought they'd keep the Jets in the game knowing that the offense has a bit more to figure out right you know you get Aaron Rogers back you get Mike Williams in you're really still trying to figure out this offense and the defense is pretty much the same from last year so it was kind of the opposite last night it looked like the offense was out there a bit longer or has been together longer than the defense with just how um discombobulated they were but that's one side of the ball and then if we move on to the offense right um I think it looked good at certain points and then other points you see why you know this is going to be a work in progress right the third or second drive like I mentioned Aaron Rogers put a great drive together connecting multiple times with Garrett Wilson he looked good on some contested catches but again I think the need for some more playmaking maybe you can get it out of Mike Williams you weren't really going to know that in week one after he was coming off of an ACL injury but I just need to see a little bit more on the pass catching sort of skill-based players rather than you know just always going to Wilson because against good defenses that's going to be taken away you like everybody always says it with Bill bich he always tries to take away your best player and you know good defenses are going to be capable of doing that I'm sure there was a lot of double coverage a lot of attention to Garrett Wilson where it made it tougher for some throws you know Rogers still tried to force it to Garrett and it ends up in a tip ball and it gets intercepted right so those kind of things I think would be alleviated a little bit more if you had more pass catching options Alan Lazar didn't look great Bree Hall is another playmaking you know player that you have on your roster but the offensive line still didn't look right there wasn't that many holes for Bree Hall and once the Jets got down I think like you usually see they Reserve to the passing game they start overpassing a lot more and they sort of forget about the running game right and that way you become onedimensional and you're not going to be any good team any good defense being one-dimensional especially like going back to those weapons if you don't have that many outside of Garrett Wilson so with that being said talking about Aaron Rogers now here to just close out this segment for it being his first game back in about a year off from that Achilles injury he looked pretty good for any negatives and for any rustiness that you might have noticed overall I think that's going to get cleaned up again because this is his first game back but but the zip on the ball looked pretty much there the decision making the analysis reading defenses all was still there he looked a little bit anxious when he tried to roll out trying to alleviate or trying to um move around that pressure but overall I wasn't really disappointed with Rogers I thought he did a pretty good job but um you know it's only week one right with everything that I said it is only week one their schedule for the next couple of weeks isn't going to be tough per se in terms of who they're playing I think they're playing the Raiders the Titans and potentially the Patriots so going up against those quarterbacks not the toughest thing to do in the world but it's more so a little bit more challenging just because of the timing they play next Sunday at 1:00 and then they have a short week they're playing on Thursday and then if I'm not mistaken they play soon after that in London so the traveling is going to be a nightmare we'll see how much that affects them but yes they did lose week one pretty convincingly but you know it's only one week you're not going to win the Super Bowl you're not going to win anything in the first week so the Jets have a lot of work to do a lot of things to figure out but even still having Aaron Rodgers if you didn't have Aaron Rogers in this game there would be a night and day difference right you at least have Aaron this year there is a lot of Hope and a lot still to look forward to I believe for the Jets in this season it's still very early but talking about the Jets and finishing off on this segment we're not going to move on from New York because we're going to talk about the other New York team the New York Giant and their struggles a lot more than the Jets in their week one matchup against the Minnesota Vikings only putting up six points and now the question is is it too early to bench Daniel Jones a lot of people are probably have been and already calling for his name so we're going to dive into that some of the outstanding stats that follow Daniel Jones that don't do him any favors we're going to get into all of that when we return after this break you're listening to the gsmc chipshot football podcast [Music]
