from the 1011 now streaming studio in Lincoln Nebraska this is the enre port Husker Show sponsored by fat dogs convenience store hi everyone Bill wrencher alongside Chase Madison in the 10-11 hour streaming studio for another edition of the N report Husker show Chase it is finally game week not only for football but for volleyball and actually the volleyball team plays tonight uh in just a couple hours in Kentucky against Kentucky things are good it's and it's also finally not 100 degrees outside buckle up it's going to be a fun ride right it will be yeah the words of Dylan Raa this morning um mhm yeah it's an exciting time of year and it's this is really where the wheels start to turn and U we just start to run around crazy here but um overall just uh really exciting to you know really get everything kind of In Motion right yeah I met again for the players they kind of hit you know the the dog days of fall Camp same thing kind of happens to to the reporters and then all the media that are there you guys are ready to kind of stop asking the same questions over and over again and now we finally kind of get to do that we had our first depth chart released yesterday uh we had single digits last week uh we had black shirts today ton of stuff happening yesterday with rule today with coordinators and hearing from Dylan Rola for the first time since being Nam starter yeah it was really nonchalant how the Huskers last week announced that he was the starter but it was also kind of nonchalant how rule told rail it was just walking off the field the two of them and said hey congrats your QB W and he said the first thing he did obviously was call his parents because you know they've really built him to the player he is the person he is and um just really a remarkable young man and uh the um the details right he's he earned the job and to hear him kind of speak about that today he has a lot of respect for the other quarterbacks in the room and um overall it's this new era of Husker football we don't know it's Uncharted ter teritory we entering but uh to have him as the the qb1 it's a pretty good leader and uh the the quote from Thomas fenon was the Magic in the minutia and minutia means details and it's shown that ra has put in extra effort yesterday uh Matt rues saying he came in at 6:00 a.m. someone's blaring music it's Rola on the bike getting cardio in so uh there's a lot of good things in motion and it really just we have to wait and see there's a big a lot of question marks for how they're going to play but um it's it's great to finally have you know kind of a rigid outline of what this team's going to look like yeah and R even went through cuz you know he was asked like what have you been working on you know rule talked about maybe some footwork issue and he kind of even broke it down spring was learning The Playbook summer was kind of getting his body ready and then you know now it's been working on the footwork and the real sort of competition with hinr harberg and Daniel kin and Jaylen grad over the last couple weeks well and he's a very Dynamic player and some people like comment his game very momes esque very gung-ho um you know Gunslinger type of player uh and with that comes you know mistakes comes overthrown balls and I think just talking about his footwork I think he was a very um just uncharacteristic quarterback and maybe at times they wanted to tweak things that would be like stepping up in the pocket and you know hitting a deep dig on third down or you know running a mesh concept and being able to roll out with ease and that also just plays with your running back next to you as well and I think in high school he get a lot of like let's just make magic happen and and he's incredible at that to do it yeah but you know now that you have coaches that have seen a lot of football they can kind of refine and tweak things and he talked about that and he also talked about watching 60 different clips of Tom Brady throws and pinpoint accuracy so there's a lot of uh a lot of like you know expectation to come in with a big recruit it's like wow he's going to be amazing right away you know everyone can improve right there's there's tweaking to do for anything and he talked about that so that's good to see I had said last week with Kevin uh that like wondered if maybe they'd kind of keep things vanilla for UTEP you know kind of easing and then saving some stuff for Colorado and yeah like you just said it sounds like that is not going to be the case well I think this is a Scotty Waldren UTEP team that there's a lot of uh new age from this El Paso team because it's a new head coach first year it's the first time Nebraska's ever played them but it's also a coach that's bringing in his schemes and stuff from Austin P and just his experience and so I think they're expecting the defense to kind of give him a lot of multiple fronts and things that almost like what Tony white does a lot of different looks and so because of that they're going to be prepared to run anything like this is not going to be a walk in the park one note FCS team this is a this is a UTEP team that's going to show us a lot of different things and so I think that's why they're ready to kind of go through the entire binder if they have to and so uh I I like the quote that Tony white gave today uh someone had asked him kind of what are the you know the 24 48 hours out for him as a defensive coordinator and you know it's not just the fans that are ansy for the games too Tony white was saying he gets ansy I think he told some story about how he thought he was going to call all the wrong plays and give up 100 points but that's not actually what happened yeah and I think last year he learned a lot that like at times you know there was some big plays given up by the defense so you know it wasn't perfect uh last year even though the defense was one of the better defenses in the country so you know I think I think everyone's preparing right and the defense is you know there's no there's no passes like let by it's not like oh we we're figuring out the offense the defense same thing you know they're going to be nervous they going be ready too but they have nine of the 10 single digits uh that were handed out last week starting on your defense um if I punch up here this is your defensive uh depth chart uh again Ty Robinson Nash Jamari John Bullock Tommy Hill Isaac gford Malcolm hardzog deshun Singleton mares Buford all wearing single digits and then you have those couple linebackers MJ Sherman maai beer that don't necessarily have the single digits but those are experienced players uh in the middle leag defense yeah last week when we found out the single digits it kind of told us a lot like oh this is basically the starters and yeah looking at that that there were the holes were the linebacker spots which um filled by MJ Sherman a guy who's play a lot of football transfer from Georgia originally from Baltimore Maryland uh and then maai Bayer has really earned this spot and I think Stefon Thompson uh will also see the field a decent amount he's a Syracuse transfer that has played in Tony white system and then the same thing princewell umam Mellen is another guy that can be a dynamic playmaker but um yeah it it tells us a lot about the defense with them being having nine of the single digits um now granted there was some incumbents that just had to kind of you know hold on to their uh socks and be a good player think um the blacks are different you can lose your starting job MJ shman said it today it's not a guarantee but the single digits um was something that you really would have to uh really have to do something wrong I think as a person or as a leader um to get that taken to get that taken away uh and so we really had a good idea of the defense last week um this week we you know we find out those two other spots which is McKai Bayer and MJ Sherman and then we also find out that the 12th black shirt is s true sophomore cam lenhard who is an excellent player a um he was a big player in the Colorado game last year getting after sh Sanders in the first half uh he's someone that's Dynamic so it it makes total sense he earns his black shirt but he is not a starter he is the 12th black shirt and I kind of like that being able to um have 12 kind of have that unsung hero that maybe is the extra guy and it was actually uh Tony white that said the defense spoke up about cam linhard getting a black shirt they could have just done 11 so um we we figured out a lot of question marks um obviously there still is some um not concerns there still is some uh depth um intriguing points on this defense I think the biggest question mark is in the secondary you have a great starting group but what if one guy goes down who's going to be the one to make the play that we haven't really seen make plays AKA Amari Sanders Derek Branch Kobe Brett s right blly Hill the two the two I mean I think any player on there we probably talked about during this off season except for Amari Sanders and Derrik Branch those were two kind of surprises to show up there on the defensive dep chart yeah Derek Branch Lincoln native went to high school here um and then who was the other name you said uh Amari Sanders yeah Mar Sanders freshman at Miami rules talked about it Mr 305 he likes he likes the players that are coming out of South Florida um that they've been able to get and yeah the the secondary I guess is the biggest question mark on defense from a depth standpoint but um overall we've learned a ton this week just that we didn't know you know last week or you know um just about what this team is who we're going to see out there on the offensive side again with that new depth chart being released probably the biggest takeaway is the three ores that we had on the running back so you have ramir Johnson or EMT Johnson or Gabe Irvin Jr or Dante Dowell um Marcus atfield said today you know he'd like to have probably one or two guys but right now they got four yeah you you would I like to ideally have you know one guy no pun intended but run away with the job and I I think they just really I guess want to see how they do against you know other competition and I think you know who is the one that doesn't fumble ball security who is the one that executes the right play picks up the extra Blitzer on a third down or you know does the little things like that but then at the same time it sounds like they're all kind of hitting check those boxes what Ru said yesterday was he wants to see the guy that they're blocking the play for four yards maybe it's an inside Zone concept and they bust it outside and now they've picked up 80 that's what rules said yesterday and I think um time will tell over these next three weeks I would be very surprised by Illinois a month from now the Illinois week I should say a month from now that we don't know who the two running backs are getting the line share of the carries and Rule also mentioned it could work itself out you know Gab bin Jr has been a guy that's consistently battled injuries and ramir Johnson while he is healthy right now he is someone that's also battled injuries and coming off of a big injury so I think we're going to know a game or two in pretty clear but it is an interesting point it's it's definitely the most outlier besides kicker on the dep chart yeah it is a good problem to have to have to have too many guys I'm I'm excited that's something that like you we can watch for it's like it's like you know now and and it is the only ores on offense so it's like things have been decided besides that position you uh you and I mentioned it or I mentioned it to you yesterday the one thing that kind of surprised me about the offensive uh depth chart was the slot receiver position uh because uh in your number one slot receiver you have your guy that was starting at fullback last year and jiron boner again rule talked about him I think yesterday saying he could stay on the field and they could go to 11 personnel with a fullback on the field without having to substitute any guys just a guy who does a lot of really good things really well yeah I think this was a surprising to Husker nation and a lot of fans when this came out yesterday but to the media or just to people around the team it's not surprising at all he caught a corner touchdown in the spring game from Dylan Rola and he's been that guy I don't know if it's the x or the y or what exactly positions but he's the slot um on the dep chart you see here he's been that guy since basically the beginning of Camp the what rule said was and I know it's listed there as 220 um they kind of give players the benefit of the doubt the five pound yeah I wish my scale looked like that um no but um the He's listed there as 220 but he's he's I think he's lighter than that I think he's probably closer to almost 200 or 210 and because of that they've struggled to keep him at a fullback weight to an extent so he is just a beefier slot receiver that has you know a little bit of sneaky speed and so uh he's a guy that's going to be able to make plays and they've relied on him and they've gone to him so we'll see and obviously you know the positions behind him Isaiah Garcia castanada is coming off of another injury and so he what we've seen he doesn't look a 100% uh maybe he will surprise us and be able to make some plays coming in as the twos um he is going to be on punt return so that'll be interesting to see uh but he's there and then the slot's also interesting cuz that third spot Conor Nelson answorth Bulldog that's coming in as the fourstar recruit the top player in the state of Nebraska um so that's an interesting position but Jan and boner has proved himself since the beginning of Spring through fall camp that he's a guy that they can rely on and then last thing I want to mention just on the depth chart again and that's something we've been watching since the beginning of camp and we found out that Tristan alvano returning starter from last year originally wasn't on the 120 for fall Camp then it was put back on but battling a groin injury um and sounds like it's still that job is still kind of up in the air with uh um John hle Lincoln native um so not sure who's necessarily going to get the first crack at a field goal attempt it's going to be one or the other I think we'll know Thursday I'd be surprised if Ru doesn't have a decision by then um and I'm kind of leaning that it'll be John Hole the link in Southwest grad the big question mark about him is that he's not really kicked in a Collegiate game or in front of 90,000 people um he only kicked a few field goals in high school he was pretty successful in extra points but then he's a jco transfer and he's gone to some of the Kohl's kicking clinics and really put up impressive numbers and they were they've been happy with his accuracy they're not missing kicks I think Alano's leg might um might be able might have more untapped Potential from a distance standpoint but fans got to remember that Tristan alvano was not that consistent last year as a freshman and I get he was a freshman but um just inexcusable Mis kicks at times that turn to be costly in a lot of three-point games um so I'm leaning that it'll be John Hull just because I don't think Tristan alvano is still 100% but um I think we'll know Thursday yeah and so then um it's it's utap on Saturday it's a 230 kick Chase uh on Fox looks like it's going to be pretty nice it's going to be warm upper 80s it's always warmer in the stadium um and then uh it's J uh Jason benetti Brock hu and Allison Williams on the call but UTEP again kind of an unknown uh because you mentioned it they have Scotty Waldren their new head coach uh he came from Austin P so it should they were three and nine last year um and so they were uh one and four in their last five games just like the Huskers were so uh it should be a good first test and like we just mentioned like rule mentioned looks like they're going to just kind of go they're going to play how they want to play they're not going to really hold anything back and we should get a pretty good first look at at what this team is going to look like yeah fans are buying in we're along for the ride and it's going to be a fun time I I think I think um there's definitely going to be growing pains I don't think any everything will be perfect but um I I think this team's going to be pretty good on Saturday against the UTEP team that you know just like just like Dylan R they're still figuring things out you know it's it's I think Nebraska I'd I'd like to see a clean game you know maybe a plus turnover margin would be ideal but um overall both teams are still be figuring things out especially with the Freshman quarterback but then a team that's completely new like 30 or 40 new players on the roster for UTEP so um I think that will play in the Nebraska's Advantage especially a defense with a ton of returning starters and guys like Robinson who has 33 starts as a Husker gford with 22 starts um so it's going to be interesting to see but I think um I think Nebraska's got the upper hand obviously and the spreads show that as well favored by 27 and a half over under on the game is 48 and A2 taking the over the under 48 and A2 probably take the over if if I'm not a betting man but if I was John Cook I'm not a betting man uh but if I was I would probably take the over and I think Nebraska is going to score I don't think they're going to slow down especially if they did get out of hand and they throw hinr harberg who's going to see the field that's that that they've said they throw another quarterback in there in the fourth quarter if they're up 30 that quarterback's going to go try to ball yeah so um I would take the over and I also think UTEP they they they are Up Tempo so like if if UTEP scores like they're going to they're not going to take all the Time in the World to do it yeah yeah all right so moving from football to volleyball because volleyball they they are playing in 3 hours and 6 minutes uh they're at the avca first sh first serve showcase the KFC Yum Center in Louisville Kentucky uh so the first match is Nebraska versus uh Kentucky the second match uh is Wisconsin versus Louisville that will follow immediately after you can watch on ESPN 2 uh that first service at for 7 o'clock yeah this is one of their first games that are on a bigger TV network they're on ABC ESPN they're littered throughout the season um on some big networks Beyond Nebraska Public Media or Big 10 Network um and yeah this is an exciting game this is a a little bit different than opening the season in front of 990,000 people but um still should be a good crowd and probably a decent showing from H the Husker Nation um in Louisville and this is where the race for the Roses starts the theme of the Season according to John Cook CU he likes horses and Churchill Down is in Louisville Kentucky they want to end the season where they started the season and that's because the final four is also at the KFC Center so um really exciting matchup tonight I think KY is a pretty good team ranked ninth in the country uh according to the preseason polls um and we're going to find a lot about this Nebraska team in this first game there's not a depth chart like the football team there's the Red White scrimmage which we saw four different lineups according to John Cook that they were testing out what lineup they're going to go with is the question it's not answered um but yeah ky's a good team they came to Lincoln actually last season the Wildcats played at the dean um I was there it was a fouret match it was one of the first sets I think of the Season that Nebraska had dropped against an opponent it was early in the season September early September last season so uh this is a good Kentucky team I do Nebraska obviously is ranked second for a reason they have a ton of talent across the board uh but it's just going to be interesting to see who they go with um and who they pump up and just roll I say usually you'd like to start off with your season with a little bit of an easier opponent so you can figure out some of those what what lineup do I want to go with but John Cook just jumps right in again top 10 opponent on the road um in Kentucky you you'd have to think the I mean Husker fans will travel but you'd have to think the crowd would probably favor Kentucky with it being yep and from Lexington's not too far from Louisville so uh and so that's tonight uh 6:00 Central I should say I said 7:00 earlier but at 6 7:00 eastern 6:00 Central on ESPN 2 the Huskers then will have their home opener uh on Friday the Meritus player challenge TCU Oklahoma uh as well as Nebraska and Texas S&M Corpus chrisy going to be participating in that little tournament yeah they open at home with the Islanders um which I think will be a little bit much easier opponent than Kentucky will um but yeah it's going to be exciting to see and to be honest you know they're playing Kentucky which is a good team MH but at least they're not playing Louisville or Wisconsin um because you know Wisconsin returns Franklin they return a lot of Heavy Hitters I believe so oh gosh I've been hoping she's going to graduated for a long time yeah um but yeah it's going to really we're really going to find a lot out about Nebraska tonight and U people people remember last season they started the season 29 and0 or 30 and0 uh no maybe 28 and0 uh before they lost in Madison to the Badgers so um trying to get the season off on the right foot but it is a big match up and John Cook talked about it you know it's it's forward growing the game and that's what tonight's all about to get in some Premier Volleyball matches ahead of the football season to really get some eyeballs and fans watching um but yeah it should be exciting um it's good we're going to find out you know who they go to for outside hitter um who their midd blocker is which Andy Jackson looked really good looked incredible in the Red White scrimmage so I'm expecting to see her out there obviously we're going to see Lexi Rodriguez and Meritt B Meritt B playing opposite who's going to be outside hitter how they're going to work in Lany choboy um but yeah so a lot of questions answered tonight um and it should be a good battle for the Huskers did you catch the documentary that dropped on Sunday the I did I actually watched it early um because I we talked to the directors U which you can find interviews on 1011now.com um from when the coverage we did there um but yeah I got to watch it last week and really well done by E60 the production value is always um very topnotch and you really get to learn more about a few of the cast of characters within the team and it was it was fun to relive the season and really see um the ins and outs of the program I was kind of hoping we'd see maybe a little bit more of John Cook's horse but nextx e60c I I think that came a little bit too late in post production uh horse 415 or rev as the fans picked um but yeah it um just an incredible documentary and really a great way to promote the team and to get eyeballs following the Huskers ahead of a highly anticipated season uh uh yes you're absolutely right and you will have highlights of tonight's match uh 10 o00 tonight and report in sports cast so look forward to seeing that hopefully again winning highlights Chase anything else before we let everyone go uh fat dogs fat dogs fat dogs fat dogs uh convenience store so appreciate them for sponsoring the report Husker
