How a Plum Broke Up Oasis: Liam vs Noel Gallagher

Oasis Return Today I'm feeling so dang British. Oasis is back together and has concerts lined up for 2025. Yes, before GTA VI. But why did they even break up in the first place? And no, that plum is not clickbait. Sit down, grab your snack, and let me take you a bit back in time. The year is 1991, okay? Oasis Form in 1991 Jeffrey Dahmer just got arrested. Full House is one of the most popular shows on TV. Not too sure what's going on over there in England, but I do know, what I do know is that across the pond, one of the biggest rock bands of England, and the whole world was forming. Oasis was started in Manchester by Liam Gallagher and friends with Noel Gallagher, Liam's brother, joining just a few months later. I'm not going to spend, you know, too much time talking about the history of the band, and I'm only going to mention some key events that led up to the juicy little bits. And you don't want to be watching an entire documentary, right? We'll get to everything, alright? Don't worry, don't worry. We'll get there. Definitely Maybe Later, in 1994, the year our tea really starts, Oasis released their debut album, Definitely Maybe, and boom, it was number one in the UK charts within the week. It was a masterpiece and became the fastest selling debut album in the UK. At least I think it was. Probably was, right? Let's just roll with that. But with this newfound fame, however, those two brothers, they could not keep each other from beefing, alright? They were beefing left and right. Alright, so we'll start in 1994 at a concert Whiskey a Go Go Incident at the Whiskey A Go-Go in LA. Liam was mad and was on a certain drug from the hit show Breaking Bad, if you know what I mean, and he ended up throwing his famous tambourine at Noel. Tensions were already rising, so you know, an event like this made Noel feel some type of way, even though the tambourine admittedly didn't really hit him that hard, but it angered him. Also in 1994, Amsterdam Ferry Incident Oasis had an infamous ferry incident in Amsterdam. The band was on a ferry and there was a bit of intoxication going on, as is the case with many of the events that we're going to be talking about, and a fight broke out between the band, yes. Members of the band got arrested and obviously this just made tensions even worse because they were already rising. I think Noel left the band for a short period of time, maybe a couple of weeks for the first time, but honestly, I can't find too much on that, so. take that with a grain of salt. Liam, though, said he loved it because he was punk rock, but Noel, and I'm assuming the rest of the band, didn't feel the same way. Noel Hits Liam With a Bat I don't know. Now we move to 1995, when Oasis was recording What's the Story, Morning Glory. Liam, yes, Liam again brought a bunch of random people to the studio while they were recording, and honestly this really annoyed Noel, who again was just all about the music. Noel was a bit angry because he just wanted to record music. He actually got so fed up with Liam that day that he ended up hitting Liam with a cricket bat. Now this cricket bat sold for auction eventually, so you know, someone out there owns this piece of history and that's not me. I don't own it. Someone does. Okay, so now we're in 1996. MTV Unplugged Incident The band was set to perform on MTV Unplugged. Last minute though, Liam pulled out of the gig and said he had a sore throat. Noel ended up performing all the songs on vocals since, you know, he had written all of them, but then guess who showed up on the balcony like a damn. villain. Yep, Liam Gallagher showed up in the crowd, just to heckle the band as they performed without him. I mean, because MTV Unplugged is televised, you can literally see how he showed up on the balcony. You know, he was just having a smoke, being annoying, and honestly all these events don't make Liam that likable so far, do they? Now I'm going to fast forward a bit to the year 2000, because I don't want you guys to sit through an hour-long video. So, you know, in 2000 Oasis was set to perform Barcelona Incident in Barcelona, but they had to cancel because their drummer had hurt his arm. So this led the band to go out drinking, and it's where Liam, for whatever reason, started questioning the legitimacy of Noel's daughter. Like, this guy was actually kind of unhinged, and somehow the actual breakup doesn't happen for an entire nine years after this event. So, Noel got some Patience. I'm honestly not sure how this incident alone didn't break up the band, but Noel, as far as I know, didn't leave the band here, so. Now, in 2002, the band was in Munich Incident Munich, and they started squabbling yet again. Liam even fought with Munich police and ended up losing some teeth during this incident, so. Liam was a loose Cannon, and he wanted to live that rock star lifestyle that I mentioned earlier, and it seemed that most of the band didn't want to live like that. But yeah, I mean, it's safe to say Liam and the band were not in good standing. Apparently though, this incident didn't really involve Noel, only Liam and two other band members, but it's safe to say that this just made tensions between the band as a whole even worse, especially between Liam and 2009 Incidents the rest of the band. Now, I'm definitely gonna be skipping important events, I'm sure, but we're gonna skip all the way to 2009. Remember 2009? What a great year. I'm not gonna lie. It was a great year, you know, unless you were an Oasis fan. The band was scheduled to play V Festival, and a festival in Paris, and once again, the band got into an argument. I think, honestly, any time the band was together, it seemed like they were just arguing. For the concerts that they didn't cancel, I'm honestly not even sure how they made it through them, but I'm sure money and, you know, legal obligations might help a little bit. Who knows, only they know. But for this event, Liam said he had laryngitis, and he had to cancel the V festival performance. I believe day two only, but later on, Noel claims this was a lie, and Liam was actually hung over. Hmm, interesting. But Liam eventually sued Noel over this statement, because he said it's just not true. But I mean, given his history, it really is believable. But I mean, only them two and the band know if it's true or not. And you remember the plum from the title and thumbnail of the video? Yeah, I'm The Plum Incident... finally gonna mention that. It wasn't clickbait, I swear. Calm down, we're gonna get to it right now. Just chill out. Now funny enough, during that argument, Liam apparently threw a plum at Noel. And while you might not think much of it, this was a huge turning point for Noel and the band. Not only that, but apparently Liam was wielding a guitar like an axe, and he ended up breaking a guitar. Which also, I think, sold an auction for like half a million dollars or something like that. So you know, Oasis, was just keeping auctions alive for a while. But yeah, a plum is almost literally to blame for the breakup of the band. And these really were the last events before Noel announced him leaving the band for good. I mean, it was definitely a combination of all the events I mentioned, and I'm sure even more that I didn't mention, but a plum being part of the final incident is honestly gold. I mean, even Noel said a plum threw a plum. But yeah, just to sum up all these events, a plum really ended Oasis. Not really, but it did. Now Noel Gallagher's statement where he says he's leaving the band cites Liam as the sole reason for his departure. He doesn't mention the plum, but come on, maybe the guy didn't like plums. And you know, Liam throwing one at him was just his final straw. Now from 2009 to 2024, tonight, what's happened? The two have kind of been taking jabs at each other on Twitter for the longest time and also during interviews. And it seems like the two generally just hated each other. In most recent years, it did seem like Liam was kind of trying to reconcile with his brother. But in the public eye, you know, we never really saw that. Maybe they did reconcile, only they know again. But no one really saw that. In my opinion, the band kind of honestly lasted longer than it should have. And at the time you're watching this, Oasis is back. Oasis Is Back omg And hopefully no shows get cancelled for laryngitis. Um, an Oasis return, which again has happened at the time of this video being up, I think would heal England for sure. For sure. For the Americans out there like me, you know, Oasis is basically like the Maroon 5 of England. I don't think Maroon 5 broke up, maybe? I don't know. But if they did and they got back together 15 years later, yeah, it's that big of a deal. That's what Oasis return is, like, alright for you Americans. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Anyways, I'm sure I missed a ton of events and this video could have been like five hours long talking about just the beef between the two brothers.
