Teenage Boy Hospitalized for Asthma Faces Deadly Breakfast Incident: A Shocking Turn of Events

[Music] the hospital is where people are meant to be safest there doctors provide them with the care and medication that they need to get better but Louis Tate didn't get the healing he needed instead he was served a deadly breakfast Lewis had checked into Frankston Hospital in Victoria Australia in 2015 because he felt sick from asthma the 13-year-old had also suffered allergies to raw egg egg nuts and cow's milk but his health concerns were well managed according his mother Gabriel Katen although lwis was only a teenager he had an anaphylaxis action plan he always has an EpiPen Gabriel told ABC News he knew to ask Hospital staffers for a safe breakfast for him to eat wheat cereal and soy milk with Louis mature handling of his medical needs Gabriel likely had no problem leaving her son overnight in the hospital she departed at 1:00 in the morning and called to check in a few hours later around the time that he would be eating his breakfast that was when Louis mother knew that something had gone terribly wrong the nurse on the other end of the line said he had a good night but he just came over me to tell me that he has a slight tingling sensation in his mouth Katen recalled with that his mother knew exactly what was happening he was having an allergic IC reaction that was quite clear Gabriel said Louis had only eaten a single bite of his breakfast when he felt the telltale signs and that one bite would prove to be fatal from the moment Lou lips began tingling the 13-year-olds condition got worse extremely quickly he died in the hospital leaving his family with nothing but questions Louis father Simon said we continue to struggle every day with the emptiness loss and circumstances surrounding his death but the family had a suspicion that their son's breakfast was to blame for his quick unexpected passing we strongly believe that Lou death never should have happened he was in the hospital at a place where he should have been safe yet despite us providing clear and concise Communications about his food he died his father added the 13-year-olds family would have to wait more than 2 years after their son's death to find out what had actually happened to him during the inquest they learned some upsetting details about the hospital's handling of Lewis allergies in December of 2017 the nurse in charge of Frankston Hospital's children's Ward Helen Hutchins admitted that Lewis allergies hadn't been written on the kitchen whiteboard as they should have been she called it a failure of the system according to ABC news but coroner Philip burn eventually found that there was more to blame for lwis death than a bad breakfast in February 2018 he revealed that the 13-year-old had died from a disorder called malignant hypothermia which was an incredibly rare diagnosis malignant hypothermia occurs when a patient has an extreme reaction to the medications administered during anesthesia symptoms of the condition include a rapid heart rate high temperature and muscle stiffness Frankston Hospital staff had indeed given Louis an anesthetic for a very specific reason he had gone into anaphylaxis after eating his breakfast according to the coroner this meant the boy's family suspicions about his cause of death were partly correct burn also performed further research to figure out what exactly the hospital had given Lewis to cause the allergic reaction but he believed that forensic experts did not receive the right carton of milk from the hospital preventing them from identifying the allergen present burn said I am somewhat frustr ated whether it was mistakenly cow's milk in the glass or some other contamination due to dairy product regrettably I am unable to determine still the family felt Vindicated by the coroner's findings ultimately we know that if he hadn't had breakfast he would have been back home with us and we wouldn't be here Simon the boy's father said after hearing the results of the inquest he and Gabrielle did have one problem with the coroner's findings though although burn had indeed pointed out the hospital's poor food handling procedures he did not make any recommendations for improvements in the area LS parents wished he had but the corridor said that he didn't need to that was because in the wake of Ls death the hospital had revamped its food handling guidelines the coroner believed that they were now thorough and appropriate the hospital had begun putting patients allergies into a computer system so that they wouldn't be absent from the kitchen whiteboard as LS had been and although Louis parents finally had the results that they knew to be true all along they still planned to do more in the wake of their son's untimely death after hearing the coroner's report they said that they planned to file a civil suit against Frankston hospital this story was really incredible but you will like the next one more when a teenager passed this man in Costco the words on his top made her reach for her phone when kin Aguayo was hanging out with her College friends at the mall she perhaps never expected to meet someone with such a heartbreaking story in the end though she made time to speak to the stranger and after doing so she felt compelled to tell the world about him Aguayo is a freshman student at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona and one day she and some of her College friends headed down to the city's Christown Spectrum Mall something pretty special happened during that trip trip however the story would even eventually make National headlines it all started when Aguayo and her Pals were in Costco as they were browsing the aisles though aguo noticed something out of the corner of her eye in particular she clocked that there was something particularly interesting about a fellow Shopper it was all to do with what the guy was wearing that being said he wasn't in fancy dress or anything else outlandish all he had on was a regular T-shirt and pants nevertheless the message on the back of his shirt stopped aguo in her tracks specifically on the reverse of the man's T-shirt were the following words Kidney donor needed type B+ asked me how and as soon as the message had sunk in Aguayo knew that she had to stop and talk to that man it felt like it was the right thing to do she said to the Arizona Republic in March 2018 indeed the message on the shirt had struck somewhat of a cord with the college student once I read his shirt I felt something in my heart it's not every day that you see shirts that say that and that was a first for my friends and I aguo continued to the newspaper it turned out that the stranger in Costco was 67-year-old Robert Duran and the reason he was wearing the shirt was heartbreaking he had kidney failure and so was having to endure Thrice weekly dialysis treatment Duran's kidney disease therefore meant that he needed an organ transplant to survive but he hadn't had much luck in acquiring one before that visit to Costco even though he had been on the waiting list for a donor for 4 years disappointingly a match had been nowhere to be found aguo and her friends also learned that Duran had had his t-shirt custom made after an entire year on the waiting list with no matches ever since then he had been regularly wearing the shirt in the hope of catching the right person's eye indeed Duran had made sure to put on the t-shirt before every time he and his wife had gone shopping but even more heartbreakingly Aguayo found out that Duran had sometimes worn it around the airport when he didn't even have a flight booked my wife and I go all over the place wearing the t-shirts Duran later said to the Arizona Republic we are just hoping someone sees them them finally though someone had noticed Duran's shirt and aguo chose to help this man with his mission to find a donor auua recognized however that the fastest way to spread the word about something today is via social media so she decided to take to Twitter to share Duran's story in the hope of raising awareness of his plight and on March 28th 2018 she posted a tweet that snowballed of that tweet aguo explained to to the Arizona Republic I decided to post it on social media because I thought that maybe someone out there that has a Twitter account can donate their Kenny or just help with a simple retweet to find him a donor little did the student know at the time however that she would create a huge social media storm indeed ago's tweet went viral all she did however was share a couple of photos of Duran with a short message explaining how they met and that he needed a donor She also asked for people to retweet her post which they did in their thousands in just under a month in fact ao's message was retweeted over 260,000 times and more than 200,000 people liked the post not only that but the comments kept on rolling in and even better plenty of generous people offered up their own kidneys to Duran a fundraising page was even set up in Duran's name so far 4 $30 of the $500 goal has been raised to help with any medical expenses that he may incur the messages of support flooded in on the donations page too one wellwisher even said that they also had the B+ blood type and would love to donate their kidney to him meanwhile Duran himself was extremely grateful to aiguo and her friends were stopping to talk him and subsequently sharing his story on social media I think of them as Saints he said to the Arizona Republic I think the Lord brought them down for me but the search for a donor is still not over and aguo explained as much in a message posted to Twitter on March 30 there she wrote that there were several potential donors but that nothing was set in stone yet she added that Duran would let her know if a match was found the Quest for a donor has proven very difficult for Duran however his wife has been suffering too Duran told the Arizona Republic that the weight for a kidney was tearing her apart sadly though Duran is not alone in needing lifesaving surgery he is one of over 200 people in Arizona currently requiring organ transplants according to figures supplied by the donor network of Arizona not only that but new kidneys are particularly in demand with over 95,000 people in the US currently needing replacement organs of that kind however thanks to ago's efforts Duran's story is out there now let's hope then that social media Works its magic and gets Duran off that waiting list soon
