about the 49ers 53 man roster uh recording this Tuesday afternoon Niners initial 53 man roster is out any just general takeaways any any major surprises anything for you Chris yeah I think a big one uh Elijah Mitchell not going to play this season uh went on injured reserve I think it's a hamstring injury um it's it's a tough break man like he's somebody who I think is I think I've said it on this podcast before when he's fully healthy and Roland he is a top 10 running back just from a pure talent perspective I think in the league just his physicality and speed um it's kind of a rare combination but he's had a lot of knee injuries and has just been a hard guy for the ners to rely on from a durability perspective so him going on season ending injured reserve this is somebody who I thought was going to be the Niners number two running back behind Christian mcaffrey which obviously could uh that the number two back could be a potentially important part of this offense um with caff's potential Health concern is dealing with a calf injury now uh so that's a big one two tight ends George KD and Jake tongas uh a surprise not necessarily a surprise given the lack of talent at tight end but a surprise given that we've seen Kyle Shanahan keep four tight ends pretty much every year since he's since he's been head coach um and that'll probably change uh the other one Talon ohu funga being activated I don't know that this necessarily means he's going to be able to play week one but it would indicate to me that the ners think he's going to be available at some point in September um other than that nothing too crazy uh some some names some interesting names that got released or some interesting players that got released but nothing too surprising on that front what's it out to you yeah I I thought seven wide receivers with Ronnie Bell in there with Chris Conley was was kind of interesting and just kind of shows a the uncertainty around Ricky piol shoulder injury and B uncertainty around Brandon auk I think they wanted to make sure they had an extra wide receiver there but you brought up the tight ends I'm glad that they only kept two because and I and and to be clear I think they're probably going to get one or two on the practice squad and and Elevate one of one or two guys on on game days but when you watch the 49ers tight ends and we talked about this on the Pod there wasn't anybody that you looked at and went oh man they have to keep that guy next to George KD like Jake just it was probably just their best tight end alongside KD in Camp so they're going to rock with that and then they'll Elevate players or or sign someone uh at some point during the year and and fill out the roster there but I I I was pretty surprised that they only kept two uh Amry Thomas is the other one that stood out I didn't think there was any chance that he was going to stay with the 49ers and he may not play Nick Wagner from ESPN our favorite cast member not this on Twitter the the ners could just put Thomas and Feliciano on IR now and they don't have to designate them for a return they can just kind of decide if they're going to come back or not at some point during the year and there's a good chance that uh Thomas just doesn't wind up playing for San Francisco uh but they can put him on ir and if they if they're thin at at corner and uh they've they've already brought somebody up from the practice squad or they don't like who they have on the practice squad then Amry Thomas is a player they know they can plug in and at least play special teams so I I was definitely surprised he was not among the the players listed as a as a release yeah it feels like to me you know Samuel wack and Rocky uh both did not make the team I think one or both of those guys could both get back to the practice squad and then be potentially a game day elevation right so I think you know with a lot of these cuts and guys you know they uh they plan on trying to get to the practice squad there's an agreement sort of already in place right like a kind of a handshake agreement with guys they release say all right we'll release you um but there's a pretty good chance we'll need you week one because of injury situation X right and that situation might be might be Amry Thomas for right now so yeah I'm with you I was surprised um but to me it doesn't it it doesn't necessarily mean that Samuel Macker Rocky won't actually be playing games for the 49ers this year because they might just be needed for for depth rolls and you know Kyle shanan says it all the time like the first 53 is one of like 153s that that you have that you have throughout the season so um this is just the first one but that's one of the things you and you mentioned a few different things there too but that's one of the things that I think will change um you know I would imagine one of these guys that they cut will be back at quarterback yeah yeah I think so too um Jaylen Graham let go that was a little bit of a surprise to me I thought for sure Curtis Robinson would be the player that they let go and and hope to sneak through and and get to the practice squad but now it seems that Graham is going to be that player that was a a a small surprise to me but not not stunning um yeah honestly honestly the biggest surprise is that Braden Willis got let go it just felt like Braden Willis was on track to whether he was going to be a a good player or not or a regular contributor or not it just felt like he was in line to to be the the draft pick from from last year's class that they kept around and then they didn't yeah I I agree it's a little bit surprising I I wonder if Logan Thomas if they're just gonna like have him on the practice squad and then bring him back yeah game days um be that I mean that's what it feels like for them to release him um a couple weeks ago and then bring him back now he didn't make the team they only have two tight ends it would seemingly make sense to me that they that they just Elevate him um and or or maybe one of their other tight ends and maybe Braden Willis goes to the practice squad and they bring him up so a lot of moving Parts here um I do think it's important to note the Brandon iuk situation you know you mentioned it with the seven receivers uh Brandon auk's situation is uncertain Jan Jennings has been dealing with an injury Ricky peaw has been dealing with an injury um you know it it does make sense to have Ronnie Bell up and uh you know I think that receiving core might be a little bit thin to start the season even with seven guys so um that'll be be that that'll be worth watching and and then along the offensive line um Spencer berford make made it a little bit surprising uh but do you have a swing tackle Jaylen Moore I okay so Jaylen Moore's a swing tackle so J I think I think Chris hubard who is one of the offensive linemen who got cut and Brandon Parker another one of the veteran offensive linemen who got cut Jared Kingston as well played some tackle in college I don't think he played there at all in the in the preseason but um I I think one of those two veterans comes back as an internal depth piece at tackle yeah I mean so the the reason why I i' ask about the swing tackle is because um with Trent Williams not technically on the roster because because he's on the do not did not report list um you really only have two true tackles among your eight offensive linemen that made the initial 53 man roster which would indicate the 49ers are confident Trent Williams is going to be back at some point I I would I would agree with that yeah so I just wanted to point that out I is that smart by the Niners should they be expecting Trent Williams to just show up uh or should they be have confident confidence in their ability to get Trent Williams back in the building and his contract situation handled I guess that's to be determined um but it does signal that they're confident that's going to happen um but really like it's they would have to they they I I think it has to be something more than confidence right it has to be something where they've got he said I want X Y and Z and they're they're ready to give him X Y and Z they just haven't done it yet yeah like they just know it's matter of of pulling the trigger on whatever deal and calling it good you would hope so you would hope so man because like the Trent Williams and Brandon iuk stuff is just kind of looming over everything and I know the Niners don't really care about fan sentiment a whole lot right they just kind of operate sort of irrespective of whatever the noise is but man the noise does not feel great among 49ers fans right now and I think it would do a lot for fan morale if they got both those guys in the building because if Trent Williams Andor Debo Samuel is not on the field for Monday night against the Jets and the Niners lose that game that it's gonna be tough it's gonna be a tough scene for for Jed York and pag morate in particular um you know I thought outside of the the the roster getting cut down today announcing you're putting $200 million into Levi Stadium while you're while you have these contract negotiations ongoing between taking the Stadium 10 years into the future Chris I just thought that was a very interesting choice a very interesting choice by the organization to to do that what here's the deal if the if it really is about winning and losing negotiations guess what if they're not on the field week one you've lost you caught an L in that negotiation regardless of they could come back for a dollar you lost yeah that's it that's the bottom line I don't I don't know if that if that like I said I've seen that floated around on the internet I've not seen like hard reporting and nobody's perogue and and Jet aren't out here saying they want to win negotiations but uh it just I've seen that floated out there and given how all this has gone it just feels like that's that is correct and if that is correct yikes yikes dudes it's not what you want not what you want from ownership not ownership's best rep for sure so we'll see uh we still got to see about Christian McCaffrey's Health um I think it sounds like I haven't seen anything concrete reported but it sounds like he's trending towards being available at least if not week one soon after um and yeah I mean other than that I think I mean maybe a one name uh and I I really struggle to pronounce it uh Sam uai nonu you have you have a feel for pronouncing that name uh yeah let me get it in front of my face real quick and then defens defensive end yes Sam o Sam o we'll call him Sam o um little bit of a surprise oh aanu okay aanu auu that's easy word great that's that's great Sam aanu I apologize for stepping all over that um yeah that's F I'm sure it's not the first time that's ever happened um uh incredible Name by the way but uh yeah I I thought in trying to keep tabs on what defensive ends were doing during the preseason again not that they had anybody I think really special behind their their top four guys including Robert Beal uh aanu was kind of the guy who flashed a couple of times and maybe there's another player like KJ Henry the former third round pick from Clemson got waved by whatever team he got waved by I forget uh I know that the Saints have a couple of defensive ends that have that have not really pton Turner their former first round pick has not been has not really lived up to to expectation I I think there are other defensive ends out there the 49ers might might go good as as potential Reclamation projects uh but aanu if he's got to be their their fourth guy in week one because Yer gross Matos is out I don't think that's the end of the world over under one and a half trades made by the 49ers before the deadline over yeah I would agree yeah this this is a roster that looks like it needs multiple trades yep you might need to trade for a tight end you might need to trade for a defensive end you might need to trade for I mean God forbid you need to trade for a tackle but yikes yeah no just here here's my biggest takeaway we we said going in and a lot of people said this going in that hey this roster looks super topheavy they're going to have depth problems at a couple of different positions that's what the roster looks like to me yeah yep yeah when you have to like go like going light at tight end signals a couple things to me it signals we don't feel awesome about receivers so we need a seventh a seventh guy there uh just given our situations and we don't love just the tight ends that we have yep it's exactly which is not something you would have said of about previous iterations of this roster nope so thanes interesting times anyway that's all I've got for now I really I wish I I wish I had deeper analysis but I I think this it just kind of went largely like like we expected outside of the couple mentioned yeah hot 15 and uh we will we'll have a little bit more I'm sure they're going to be like before week one there's going to be other roster moves but for now I mean there's there's no real surprises in the starting lineup right like the the the too deep feels feels pretty intact that flip card yeah no surprises in the first first two layers of that flip card no no not at all so um all
