BC Lions vs Montreal Alouettes Week 14 Full Game 2024

thank you Kate just a beautiful night for football here in Montreal and the first meeting of the Season between the BC Lions and the alloet the lions at 6 and six back to 500 the alet the class of the lot of friends on this team he talked about it but he's really just focused on helping this team win today I'm sure there's a little bit more to that but you're going to have to face these two players these great linebackers Tyrese brevet leader in the defensive plays in the Canadian football ball league with 91 too many stats to Rattle off and the excellent middle linebacker darell sanki tasked to stop them tonight what a calendar year for Jason Moss only one loss since last September the 15th the defending Champions have already clinched a playoff spot for Rick Campbell's liines they started at 5- one but lost five in a row before bouncing back in a big way against the red blacks last week in touchdown Pacific and the Lions have won the toss and there's Terry Williams they want the ball to get this started expect Nathan R coming on and William stand back 31 against his old Team Jose maltos to Get It Started from the Montreal 30 on a Friday night in September the start of week 14 underway here at Molson stadium and it's in the hands of Terry Williams now across the 30 and the 35 and the 40 as he gets out close to the 45 yd line Frederick sha in on the tackle Nathan RoR has progressively gotten better through his first three starts I I said his first two games look kind of like preseason getting getting his feet wet trying to figure out what's happening last week he he was getting the ball out of his hand quickly he took shots downfield and located the downfield throws and he got this offense to convert 70% of the time on second down that's a a great stat when he looks like the guy who showed up a couple years ago just a couple weeks in this into this uh system well they were great in the first half lap of put 31 in the board and the red blacks want it going away and there it is William standback with his first Carry against the Montreal alaat picks up three four yards for BC Su Chung is starting his 137th game his physicality is going to be needed against Mustafa Johnson and William stck as we talked about off the top last week he had 20 rushes 93 yards but he led all receivers in yardage with 78 we'll talk about that t night going forward how well Nathan throws the check Downs to his big back the left side of that BC offensive line changed interesting to see how it plays out tonight RoR is throwing in second and six it's caught two by Justin McKinnis who grew up in the area and Pierre FCO back and later went to school in the States but he has a first down for BC on that catch throw to the wide side of the field you got a big body run to the sideline that's what you like you like guys who are big because when the ball they had just such a big frame they could reach back for a ball and make catches that aren't perfectly located back to William stanach on that first down after a gain of 15 by William stanach how about Montreal's defense Isaac admi berglin he's been a good free agent signing for this football team plays a multiple spots two sacks 17 defensive uh tackles and again once again beverett he leads this team in so many defensive C atories he's an amazing football player now another one Bryce Cosby second game at field halfback after filling in at Sam admir for Reggie double field injured we have a bunch of multiple football players that can play at different spots for this group stand back is a couple of carries for 10 yards second and five from the 41 of BC or Montreal I should say that's Javon Cy catching that from Nathan RoR and the drive continues for the Lions another first down Nathan last week just really right from the start as they went out finished the game started 20 it was 316 at half just had good Rhythm could take some of the shots downfield but he got the ball out of his hand quickly rod and that's what he's going to need to do tonight against this defense Ro got a shotgun throwing quickly to stand back it's had a great year as a receiver as well picked up 78 yds through the air last week against the red blacks to go along with 93 on the ground great recognition here on the throw out to stand in the flat this is a pressure situation what do you do when PE pressure sometimes you release right into it and if they don't cover you've got a nice easy throw he did it last week the first play of the game against Ottawa here he goes he recognizes where the free player is and that William stanback is not covered so great throw and catch there great recognition good opening drive by the Lions who have a second and one at the monreal 23 first possession of this Friday night meeting in Montreal David Macky short yardage a lot more into the end zone for a BC touchdown for the fullback turn short yardage quarterback David Mackey 23 yards for that touchdown and that's the sixth TD of the season for Macky mackie's why is he getting these quarterback sneaks because they don't want Nathan Ro to do it what you normally have right here is is there supposed to be multiple players on the outside on the perimeter you do these wide sneaks but there's nobody to play contained that's a misalignment by the Montreal defense Macky they've got it called to go to that side and they get hurt because they don't have enough people aligned to the wide side to have contain for that speed sweep or sorry the quarterback under Center quarterback outside Zone and the point after by Shawn White well David Macky yes he scored touchdowns before usually from somewhere in the that's probably the longest touchdown he's ever had in his career Ron you kidding me it's usually two yards for him a much deserved breather coming up for 34 putting the Lions on the board on a Friday night in Montreal 7 nothing BC a six play 66 yd drive three minutes off the clock big throw on the outside nice catch on the sideline getting the ball underneath to ktoy throwing into the blitz to stand back David Mackey a misalignment by the Montreal defense gets him around the defense on the quarterback sneak for the nice touchdown David Macky like we said probably the longest run of his career Rod really good excellent to see that and and that's three straight games for BC scoring a touchdown on their opening possession last week to the red blacks in Victoria and Mackey and William stanback you know badley wants this one up against his old team DC has the seven nothing lead a short kickoff and on the return is leer who's taken down around the 25 yd line Cody Farda returned two weeks ago after missing four games because of a hamstring injury and what stands out lapo that completion percentage which is tops in the CFL it'd be one thing if he just threw the ball short all the time now that's part of what they do but they lead the Canadian football league in big plays and they throw it downfield he had last week or during the by game he had five right before the buy he had five passes over 30 yards and you are five times more likely to score a touchdown when you have an explosive play so you know they they throw it short but then they take their shots and he's been tremendous at that this year last game two weeks ago they had the buy last week 22 of 34 326 two touchdowns one intercepted Cody Fardo six and one as a starter this season takes that one turns around and is running it to the left Edge takes a hit and picks up a couple of yards a second and yardage picking up the first down Matthew Betts gets to play in front of friends and family tonight and try to keep his 19 straight games with a sack he probably has 19 tickets bought too also TJ Lee moves to Sam linebacker first time and he had nine career tackle career high nine tackles last week at the strong side linebacker and Gary Peters second in the CFL with nine pass knockdowns watching him all game tonight so they get the first for Jero back on and yes watch for Matthew Betts from one for yall star at Laval and then later with star with BC returning to the Lions first game was last week on that running play and a gain of about three or four and that would be it for the alox they started slow against Edmonton but eventually they kind of Edmonton was running the football well but then Cody got on fire he had um this is all from the third quarter right they stormed back it they W on a 15 nothing run in the second half to win 2117 they were down 17-6 some spectacular throws by Cody and was really Catalyst to that successful come back from behind one well they've had some close victories I want a four-point win coming back as you talk about and second down and is caught by Reggie White and a first down as this Alouette Drive continues up near Midfield clear out clear out and then out in the flat that's what the picture is they're playing man coverage so TJ Le's inside position you just run away to the sideline beautiful location the uh the BC lines are trying to play Man coverage with two deep safeties TJ Lee just gets inside position Reggie White really good push to be able to get to the sideline and a great throw to the wide side of the field gain of 17 yds for Reggie White in his fourth year out of Monmouth actually crossed the Midfield stripe and gets it in the lion Zone at the BC 53 seven nothing Lions aloette first possession Fardo fourman Rush Runs Out of Time down he goes to as he is sacked and it is Christian Covington at four Sachs that's number five on the season for the son of the all-time Sachs leader in the CF well the history of the game of course Grover Covington but Christian with another sack on the inside you'll see him twisting behind the center and then what what that a Twist is as he goes behind his own defensive lineman as he goes behind his own defensive lineman creates a space for him to get in and get a free shot to Cody to back them up to Second and extra Christian who went to Rice University in Houston had a number of years in the NFL this his first year in the CFL where his D was a star cardo throwing completely again to speaker and another good pick up for Cole speaker although doesn't make up all of it to get for a first down it'll be a little bit shy coming up here there a special teams unit Nathan R's first game back in the CFL was three weeks ago he struggled against Winnipeg lapo you can see though how he has progressively improved you ignore the percentage for a moment clearly his best game last week especially that first half against Ottawa as we said off the top I I you know he is so quick at making decisions seeing pictures and getting the ball in his hands and you you heard coach Barker talk about it David Neville and Cory Woodruff the left side of the line you have some new players playing he's going to have to get the ball his hand quickly he's three for three he's two for two against the Blitz by the way and he gets rid of this one and completes it go four for four to start that one is the first completion to Alexander Holland and a first down for BC to get a little bit more space so important when you're backed up here inside the 2 yd line that you get at least one first down but that's a great throw get yourself out of the backed up situation you're just trying right now to get as many first downs so if you do have to punt you're not going to you're not going to put your uh defense uh in a position where field goal can already be given up gain of 13 for number 13 oh and caught by Hatcher with an aloette Defender moving in nearly picking it off Deontay ruffen the boundary Corner was just jumping that route but it ends up being a gain of 20 for [Music] BC watch right here that's the matchup and when you see how quickly the ball comes out of his hand this is what I'm talking about if Nathan doesn't throw this ball immediately yonay Ruffin is going to take it for a touchdown it's going to go oh I think we got the wrong play there but what you can see is how quickly that ball came out of his hands working in first down DC35 and that one is hands second interception of the Year Al taking over near Midfield play fake and it's dumped up and hit right away by Ace elely Jose barbone who's getting the start just his second this season because of the injury this week earlier to Austin Mack this is typical Montreal offense they are going to throw quick behind the line of scrimmage throws bring people across the formation and try to get defensive backs to Chase across and try to create leverage Advantage uh First Catch for uh on the outside for barbone who's like you said filling in for Austin M another good addition on defense for the Lions to with the injuries to Ben helic and Josh Woods out for the season aende elely been great for BC the blood over the middle and the closest receiver is Speaker it falls incomplete so we got a third and nine coming up now for Montreal elely was excellent on that play Just forcing that ball to be thrown not in a position where speaker could make the catch so really good job like you said about these young linebackers you know Ryder Varga Aiden Ney because you talked about the injuries to those really Josh Woods and talking uh you know between Josh Woods and Ben altic those are two talented football players that they've lost for the season the referee Andre PR throwing a flag out before they get the snap away for the punt too many men in the formation this is a 10yd penalty will we play third down so they'll push him back 10 we're going to snap around Midfield so instead from about the aloette 45 and it'll be a little more space for Terry Williams and the Lions who started run with that heavier build and more of a physical Bruiser mentality to his running game he now sits around 233 235 and he's been more efficient with his weight again he's wearing his stomping cleats tonight for this big trip back to Montreal has two carries so far and there is number three and Antonio MRE has him wrapped up but stand back gives him a little carry interesting he talks about I wanted to carry I at one point it came back from the co year carrying 240 lbs but he as Kenzie said I really felt comfortable running that level weight and I know as somebody going against this guy a lot of DBS did not want to tackle this guy like so his physicality that's a touchdown run from last year's great cup and you just he's got the ability to run you over he takes a three- yard game turn into a six-yard gain just by his shoulder level pad level and moving for another gain of five for standback second down roor passing to the left and it is caught and Holland just getting the foot down just need to get one down inbounds and a big first down for they're attacking the wide side of the field cuz that's where some of the spaces are here beautiful throw and again toet tap you're trying to get your one foot inbounds in the Canadian Football League you only need one and again the concentration has got to happen I got to see the ball on my hands and I got to bring my feet down both inside the Montreal 25 looking to add to their seven-point lead they scored a touchdown in the first possession it's fumbled on the snap it's fumbled again Roar picks it up and they're happy to just lose four yards that could have been a disaster for the lions with them already in scoring position so this part of the this part of the Canadian Football League teams are going more under Center because you can do a lot of different things here under Center you probably don't have as many reps as you do in shotgun and you have a little bit of bad snap looks and then once you have the bad snap then everything slows down you have people on the inside Isaac ad Demi berglin in to make the Stop and create the negative yardage play well that play was a mess right from the start they lose four yards but the bright side for BC they still have the ball still in range and trying to get the first down and fighting for it after the catch is Keon Hatcher will end up about three yd shy with a third down coming up for BC right here this is just Nathan just get putting them in a position get closer for the field goal too much for the field goal here I don't think I would this early in a game hey did you see they just did that with a fullback hey hey how about me getting one of those this is a outside zone for a quarterback from a quarterback sneak look you're trying to go around the defense cuz you don't want to run it up inside all those big guys and you're trying to make sure that the defense they have enough players on the outside they just widen everybody else he finds a crease gets north south really good Push by the offensive line good run by Dom Davidson he started his career in Winnipeg he went to Ottawa was briefly a starter came to Montreal in 22 then he went to BC and after this past season thought he was done till the alett Came Calling on that first down play nothing doing there that's handled nicely by an ex aloette seon Evans on that catch Walter Fletcher on the outside the one thing you heard from some of these uh players and coaches for the BC Lions is monreal plays with so many different sets right now you see three players going off the field and three players coming on the field and it's difficult at times trying to know what Personnel Group is in what set is in how do you align your receivers based on the different sets so interesting that uh last play they got their tail back standing out all the way out where the normally the wide receiver is so a lot of different looks from this Montreal offense you have to prepare for No Gain thanks Evans there on Fletcher right back to 25 wer Fletcher he breaks a tackle this time and he picks up about five six more yards for the alets but it is still a third down coming up for Montreal Ryder vargas's out in space and this is some one of the better things you like to do get your back the ball out in space very difficult for will linebackers to tackle these really good backs but the Cavalry is coming for him to keep him in a position to C kick a Fielder and a little discussion with the head coach and his veteran QB on the aloette sideline with Jose malos who's been Montreal's kicker most of the Season since the injury to David cot and maltos 16 for 18 longest of 50 11 straight field goals 11 straight one for one last week and this one coming from 42 away for the him he comes out and drops out he's going to be the quick throw but sometimes the running backs aren't going to see this quick throw he doesn't see it it goes up in the air uh you do not want the ball to go up in the air anywhere there's Mark Antoine dequa cuz he's going to pick you off and normally that guy returns it for touchdowns in his career so really good play once again this past defense has been spectacular All Season Montreal's defense only allowed 5 30 plus completions in the CFL really spectacular unit in the pass secondary so backing offense of the alox and they're in the lion Zone inside their 40 on that play it goes to Charleston ramble and a flag comes out dquad who was just a game breaker a year ago with not only interceptions he had few pick sixes including one in the Eastern final that really altered the course of that game the ball comes out so quickly the quaz right there to make the play and again when you play zone coverage and less man coverage you have players that are deep and they can see what the quarterback what's happening with the quarterbacks they're not concentrated on watching their man both interceptions tonight reversus Zone coverage with high players and TI Balls by the BC Lions dequa celebrates that interception there was also a flag against the Lions for face masking so it's going Montreal's way right now after the second interception of the season for toqua down to the bc21 vardo taking the hand off to Jer Andre wants to take off and look who has the sack coming back to the CFL Matthew bet second game back and his second sack had one last week against the Ottawa Red Blocks athleticism at its finest if he goes down the quarterback pulls it he starts to go down and watch him recover Cody's trying to pull this Zone read but watch how quickly Matthew Betts recovers forces Cody to go up and inside that's such a good athlete on the perimeter Matthew bets to be able to make that play he was Far and Away the leader in the seon CFL and Sachs last year with 18 second place was 12 and Bs was named the top defensive player in the Canadian football league in 23 he's coming again P steps up and it is low inside the 10 for speaker but too low for speaker to haul that one in and we get a third down and another field goal situation coming up for Moss alet uh you know Ma Matthew bets one thing who's interesting talking to him this week we asked him how much dline stuff did you learn he go I actually played more linebacker than anything I the the packages they put me in was more of a drop linebacker so I had more opportunities to do the things on the edge of the defense like he just did there two plays ago Jose Malto back in he just kicked a 42 y to get monreal on the board and then after the turnover the interception by dquad this a 28- yd try to make it two for two on the night and to cut a little further into that BC lead thanks to the interception Matthew Betts sack number two in his second game nol Thorp defensive coordinator for the Montreal alett his defense doing a number in this game so far Nathan R has two incompletions they're both interceptions both on deflections first one to Bryce Cosby then this one off William stand back into the hands of Mark and Twan dequa one of the leaders of that defense toqua the safety in his fourth year DC has the football their lead is down to four as we send it down to Kenzie Leon and Rod it kind of feels like a Dayja Vu Mar Antoine dequ fingertips saving the day really because that's how the game ended against Edmonton two weeks ago you talk to no Thor when we proud of most with this group it is that red zone defense and they were able to hold at the end of that Edmonton game the beverett play and of course toqua but he he's got AF to dig coaching at UBC uh Jim pop says I got a job in football operations come on out uh and you can interview with Don Matthews at the time he has a three-hour meeting with Don Matthews but he moved his family across the country to start his career in pro football and he's done a spectacular job I've enjoyed going against him they actually I didn't like that yeah a lot of lot of people say they don't it's not just William stck you get some young players up front o line so you'll want to try to establish a run but if you're struggling with some younger players up front they're going to have a big doing talking about young offensive linemen so what do you do you put the quarterback on the move so a little bit of a Zone Action he boots outside and he finds his big Target so as the ball pulls out yards and BC Strikes Back on the second touchdown of the season for everheart everheart right there as he's coming inside a pressure situation from the alow as he breaks back inside they lose sight of go to a Zone he's a low player he's a high player he's a high player this is what's called a Zone pressure and what you're going to do is you're going to Brit everybody but you're going to try to cover down and there's huge spaces allowed on the field so this is a a Zone pressure look that Nathan gets the ball out of his hand before the extra players you should have time uh you should have open players it's whether you have time enough to get the ball out of the hands but really good recognition nice catch by everheart versus that zone pressure that the owls love to bring and his second year out of Wyoming is mentioned he had his first touchdown of the season last week so he's two for two these last two games since James leer on this kick return ht's in a deeper hole now down 11 176 that drive led to a touchdown and Nathan roor in a flag came out by the way too but roor facing the blitz he's four for five now there was a pass interference call and there was an interception too but the touchdown pass to everard as well 12 yeah 12 uh 12 for 15 169 yards one touchdown at like you said the two interceptions kind of tip ball so this is a good half for them they've done a really nice job on the road across the country in this number 48 and BC number 29 first down going to at six the referee Andre bre announcing penalties on both sides the bottom line it is a first down for first half inside pressure again the depth of the pocket is one thing you you have two things the width of the the pocket is for the tackles but the depth of the pocket is the guards you're get good push inside that forces Cody to get off his spot and that's you're always talking about getting the quarterback to be off his spot nice inside move to get him down deal really nice play Joseph zema to free safety in the league I think this is a huge game DEA has such speed he can run it down and make a play on the football great range by the tall free safety from the University of Montreal and there's another angle on it there's a discussion now with Andre and head coach Jason Moss and as we know the officials are trying to make sure that they Montreal is Ching the ruling on the field they believe the player was SN downward contact prior to fumbling the [Applause] football well there you go Moss wanted to challenge that and sudden standback spun around at first glance it looked like he had hit the turf before the ball popped out but but there there is the issue of when the whistle was blown as well and that's why what the officials are told is hey make sure you see the rece the receiver the running back make sure that player is down hold the whistle hold the whistle as long as you can don't do an early whistle because that this can happen you got to wait that little extra picking up more yardage up across the 25 is shedler furus a gain of 11 for Montreal nice catch on the inside by ferious secondary player for safe Mar's as everyone expands his own throw the ball up turf second down pressure off the outside I'm not sure where Cody wanted him to settle but sometimes when you Blitz off the edge what do you do you throw right into that Blitz and uh they're just weren't on the same page whether he was going to sit down or stay on the Move decent numbers 10 of 13 79 they haven't had that explosive play what they're known for the previous turnovers get gave finds a freas so a second down and short and Walder Fletcher is the ball carrier and does pick up a first down 115 to go as they get closer to Midfield the aletes at one point had trailed 10 nothing got a couple of field goals to chip back away until a BC drive capped off with a touchdown from Nathan worked Aiden art but the Lions have had ball control issues keeping Montreal in it driving back full speaker another catch for him from Wisconsin lacrosse sneaker with two touchdowns last week against Edmonton and a good first half as he picks up 13 more yards for the low Zone coverage everybody lifts Cody immediately just goes I'm going to throw to Cole speaker watch him put his foot in the ground immediately and get north south that's the difference being second and short or being in a first down or third and one I love how we got North South immediately to create the first down clock taking under 50 seconds to go first and 10 from The Lion 45 pajardo dumping it off to Fletcher after the catch and R first down and much more for the Yow as Fletcher takes it down inside the bc20 26 yds Fardo to Walter Fletcher you had everybody running down field everybody clears out starting to Chase he knows where his running back is gets the ball to him plenty of space for Walter fetcher the leader in the CFL and Yak yardage down to the 19 late first half Alex looking for the End Zone here's Fletcher again after catching that short pass he works it down to the 15 25 seconds to go and a second down is coming up for Montreal a really good Rhythm BC Line's playing a lot of Zone coverage dropping everybody out Cody this whole Drive is just throwing his checkdowns so they can get across the field this is the longest yardage position they've been on this whole Drive second and long still looking for their first touchdown of this game and to end the half in a strong note for jardo he's going to take off inside the 10 down near the five he got the first down first and goal coming up for Montreal as vardo a couple of times in this drive has chosen to run this is a uh this is a quarterback draw it's a re draw you swing the back out to one inside and then you go up over the lineman block and he runs up and inside you try to expand the Box get the linebackers out and QB drop 10th play of the drive Bardo and knocked away Ryder Varga coming across Gary Peters was there as well for the intended receiver Charleston Rambo really quick pass to the slant on the outside you'll see a slant coming in right in here tries to throw it underneath and immediately as they clear out there you go Ryder Varga underneath it to make a play on that slant great play by Vara we mentioned the injuries to the Lions linebackers Ben htic well and Varga stepping up getting the started weak side linebacker now second and goal sof carss into the end zone for speaker touchdown out [Applause] the cool speaker his third touchdown in two games and that's number six in the season one of the best things about the Canadian football league is these deep end zones Rod that gives you the opportunity when you're close at the four or five yd line to throw Fades into the back of the end zone I used to always talk to the receivers about hey we're going to make him defend the back of the end zone just as much as the front of the end zone press man coverage Cody recognized it immediately just throws it to Cole speaker he knows he's got an opportunity run the outside receiver underneath great High hands great concentration and a beautiful located Ball by Cody Fardo for the touchdown that's on the last play of the first half so they'll do the point after for Malto with no time left on the clock what an Drive 11 plays 94 yds off a turnover the alet drive down and they cash in with their first touchdown of the game to make it a closer one 17 13 you know BC has the lead lapo but those turnovers have certainly been costly if you watch what happens here usually in these situations Cole speaker as he plays number two receiver to the field there's so many opportunities for uh when it's man coverage at the safety can't get to him so that's what Cody recognized so he says all right you just work outside release the low player and run down let's here's a picture of it you see press man here press man here one goes under but this is an outside release and he just stays on that path this is called slot fade where you just run a fade route it could be a corner route but it's easier to just outside release and then throw your hand up and find a spot Cole speaker's been such a great player for this organization Danny maoa he talked about when we interviewed him that I just went down to five different free agent camps people loved what they did in a Montreal free agent camp and made my place well initially it said no time left in the clock but there was done for Terry Williams they put one second back on and so there was a kickoff and a return there by Williams so now we can say it is halftime and as mentioned the aletes are down but that could have been a whole lot worse for Montreal what a great way for them to end the first half I that's what this team has always done you like two weeks ago they were down they were down they went 1550 in the second half they just find ways to resp bond to put themselves in a position where uh you know come back and put themselves in this game for BC eight art two catches in that first half including that one from Nathan roor for the touchdown as Ard has TDS in two straight games and here he is now down the field with Kenzie well Aiden your first touchdown just last week a touchdown Pacific followed it up with another one here how is the game slowing down for you yeah you know this is my second year here um just the game itself the way our offense runs um just getting more comfortable and comfortable obviously we're over halfway through the season so being able to see defenses um running the same route you know over and over the concepts over and over just throughout practice it's you know it's it's helping a lot well the team seeing the game well here tonight you got the lead now how do you hold on we just got to execute we've got I think three turnovers right now uh those are all self-inflicted wounds um you know if we don't have those turnovers the score is not this close so we just got to go out and execute and put points on the board and uh come home with the win best of luck thank you appreciate it halftime stats in monreal with the Lions leading by four the one that really stands out turnovers BC has turned the ball over three times and that's why this game is so clut one of the turnovers an interception by Mark Antoine dequa who's standing by nowan we look at that first half and just the Lion's ability to March down the field just how do you disrupt that momentum here in the second half well we got to minimize the Miss assignment got to make sure that we ready through the ball we know they got a good offense we got to make sure that we play our defense and we play 30-minute football you're able to take advantage of of the the turnovers so what it's just standing out about their Tendencies and your ability to start reading them now look it's a good team it just if they make mistake we got to capitalize you know those two interception tiit balls lose ball on the a turnover and they do the signal from Andre PUO pressure coming in right away from the inside and that's Jonah Tay coming up with the football but they put the heat on Fardo right away and this time Lions football in a turnover seei right here he's playing inside the defensive tackle and then there's a little bit of twist he moves in he moves outside as there's a movement inside but dama The Tackle can't make the play knocks the ball off from Cody great recovery excellent start for the BC Lions defense turn the tables now on Montreal turnover they get the ball at the AL at 35 to start this second half with a four point lead Williams stand back left side puts his head down gets it down inside the 30 Willi stand this is what you try to do all these twisting and when you do twists like this what happens is you just calender just gets in a position where he turned his shoulders and he can't recover toi coming back inside bunch of bodies jumping around trying to recover that ball excellent play by the defense best carry of the night for will stand back two with six yds as toi has a smile about that one big hit and fumble recovery second down Nathan Ro has time and he completes it to David Macky who has a touchdown he scored the first touchdown for BC in this game and a short yardage play that he took for 23 yards has the reception for a first down BC part of the course uh Zone coverage only rushing three people so Nathan has plenty of time you can double the offensive lineman can double the three down uh rushers so he just waits around finds David macki to throw the check down now the BC Lions third quarter Wes they're minus 34 in points differential eighth in the Canadian Football League at the in the third quarter so this will be big if they can get points right here just the sixth catch of the season for a Mack in a first down back to stand back he's running hard wants to stomp in his old team and he does some stomping right there as he gets the Lions close it'll be a first and goal coming up for BC love it old school ISO play David Mackey leads up on the linebacker block out get William the ball get his shoulders Square big first down run back to stand back left side and he can't get away from adami berglin beverett in there and a slew Dylan win as well to make sure stb back isn't able to break that one off negative yardage play a little bit of penetration at the point of it attack I believe you're going to see penetration right there as they're trying to run their Zone play Demi Bergin moves inside a little bit of a run twist so send one in out the tackle's got to stay outside so as the player moves inside the tackle should naturally take a demi Bon big moment for the Montreal defense now a second and goal at the alette five the lions with a four-point lead to start this second half Nathan L pressure coming looks into the end zone to far incomplete third and goal coming up BC Montreal tries to pressure there leaves the middle of the field wide open you can see all those bodies up there standing around the line of scrimmage they're all going to rush the quarterback as all those players come there's plenty of time for the quarterback to throw the ball to the Middle Field just a little bit too high so this is a great stop by this Montreal defense with the ball inside the 10 to keep it within a one- score game as Shawn White is out he's one for one it was a short one 23 yds this is a short one as well just 12 yds away wh's two for two so BC takes advantage with points off a turnover but not as many points as they would have thought they could have got instead opportunity missed they settle for three in a 203 third quarter lead I don't think that's going to go very well sell florid you're not like you you thinking B still has it right I don't think that's going to go very well they're going to take their $300,000 and go home just don't get anybody hurt even even after life after Nick Sabin still roll aloette he played here in Montreal back in 2019 leads the team two interceptions the you love veteran quarterback watch how far inside the field Corner s EV says they play farther inside because they know the ball's in the air longer so it's really hard to complete those Slants on those field Corners because they're going to play so far inside as you saw the veteran seay Evans understands the width of the field as mentioned Lao barbone playing because of the injury this week Austin mck would just come back to the team played one game he's on the six now another good punt by zema takes a inside the five rolls out inside the 10 congrats for 36 after a drive stalls right there Cante Evans reaching up just a little bit High DC still in front nice start on the East Coast for Nathan roor 16 of 21 passing 230 yd some real good accuracy and somebody throws on the sideline you see that one to Hollins right there uses it legs well he've been able to maneuver in the pocket in zones and been able to hit some of these blitzes that Montreal's doing really good start for Nathan Ro tonight as mentioned he has thrown a couple interceptions although they were balls that were deflected i't blaming him for those one could have been a better location the one of McKinnis a little bit off the one to William standback the ball carrier off his hands and that was taken away by Mark Antoine dequa 16 to 21 nice Tackle by sanki there on the inside Run play trying to establish this run a little bit it's been hard going Williams stand back nine carries 36 yards you know sometimes uh you got to just keep going with it but when you got a hot quarterback route it's hard you want to make sure you get the the best player of the ball makan or the best player you got to put the ball in his Nathan L you talk about sanki too we we talked to him Paul and what a difference he's made this past calendar year to the Montreal allet he plays first es skatch one two years ago signs of the XFL plays 12 games they win the championship then on September 11th he signs with the Montreal aletes that's 41 games that's a lot of football for play two championships he won in the XFL and he won last year with the owls talented football player from sack State he signed in the 11 they played and lost to the Arles on the 15 intercepted Deontay Rin third pick thrown by Nathan roor and takes his helmet off in Anger it sets up the aloette nicely here another turnover committed by BC stepping in front the Deontay Ruffin with the pick fist bump no Thor Deontay Ruffin's third interception of this season Western Kentucky there's a couple of things going on here first of all the ball's in the middle of the field so it makes the throw a little longer there's an action fake this is an RPO where they block out and he makes a decision on whether he wants to throw it or run it Ruffin is lined up a little bit inside and then this ball ends up a little bit too far ins side so Ruffins right there for the takeaway this is his third interception first time in his career right first time and it's four straight games for Nathan R now throwing a pick that's also the first time in his career B vardo Deep End Zone too far for Reggie White as they took an end zone shot right away after the turnover here approaching the Midway point of the third quarter and the aletes within a touchdown you're always trying to put a post in the middle of field because a lot of teams void the middle of field field as they get closer to the end zone so they got a post shot here no safety in the middle just a little bit too far on the outside for the throw to Reggie White Fardo second game back after going on the sixth game of the hamstring injury on second down Looks To the End Zone again coverage was there Ronald Kent and making cont ATT right after the ball arrived for Cole speaker so good defense there for BC as two quick strikes to the end zone come up with nothing and a field goal situation now for Montreal another opportunity for Cole speaker on a what I believe was a double move and what do that mean you you're going to try to stop the DBS you're going to go in and then take a shot that's quarter time memorable quarter especially for that man William stanback the touchdown to pad the BC lead so many interesting story lines in this game not over yet we still have a quarter to play and BC is leading 2716 but they've really had to earn it and certainly for William standback lapo I mean if they can go on if they can hang on and win this game he's going to remember that for that big touchdown run he had really nice really nice run really nice balance of trying to get the Run game involved once you got you got to make sure you do that because facing this Montreal team now they've got three 10-point wins this season coming back from 10 points down so they're in a situation where hey we've got to make sure we finish in this four fourth quarter because Montreal are the comeback kids like I said before s out of their 10 wins we from behind so they've got to have an answer they got to hold off this talented Montreal offense and make their plays on defense well that defense certainly charg in see Nathan Rook getting some attention after he was sacked hit by tyres beverett and then Isaac adami berglin on their last possession of the third quarter Flags out in The quarterback system you got right there I was going to say how would you like to have that QB room right now absolutely but Adam's had some good years in Montreal with standback 2019 for both of them was a breakout year for Adam standback ran for over a th000 yards and they're close friends and yeah that was Vernon Adams had a big hand in William stanback wanting to go to the BC Lions so Shawn they got to go face our Eastern teams that's why they talk about the end of end of September going into September the rest of the season when you start playing some of the I think the league has done William stanback coming back here to Montreal I'm sure a lot of the guys do William stanback I'm sure looking ahead to this game bitter sweep of course fond memories winning a great cup with the aletes but not happy with the way it ended not getting offered a contract he has 20 carries for 128 yards and a beautiful hardworking 38- yd touchdown run that is going to feel good for a while I'm sure long flight home but it be a great one for the BC Lions about to win their second straight Cody vardo and the aletes about to lose for just the second time this season and just the third time since September the 15th going back then just before they went on their run of eight straight and won the gray cup very good football team very fortable crew here again you know and and I I've said this all along this Montreal offense has stepped it up so much better this year than the previous year they can score points they're explosive and you got a great defense this wasn't our night tonight 5 seconds on the clock looks like vardo limping a little bit there the Williams stand back most yards since October 22nd 2020 won when he had 2ou 203 against the Argos I remember that game as well but wow yes sir a standback who's had reason to celebrate inside this stadium before but the first time as a visitor this one goes to the BC Lions and this one for William stanback who has a very happy return to [Music] Montreal on the Victorious side as the Lions improve to seven and really good defensive performance Nathan roor overcame a couple interceptions was able to put points on the board against this difficult defense and certainly I really felt that uh Rick Campbell had his team ready to go on a short week traveling across the country so that's a huge win against one of the top teams in the Canadian Football League rout so it'll be very interesting how they just the ability for them to run the football tonight tonight you know that that's going to that's going to show up when they continue to figure out how good they can run the football throughout the course of the season so it just doesn't have to be Nathan work in the pass game so a victory for the Lions their second straight back on top of the West at s and six and for the aletes who've charged out and one so many times in the last calendar year but fall short on this night and Montreal will head off to Calgary
