the Venice film festival is in full swing and Angelina Jolie is right in the middle of it while promoting her new biopic Maria Angelina had a heartwarming moment dressed in a gorgeous champagne gown she paused before the premiere to kneel down and chat with a bedridden fan with ALS gently placing her hand on his shoulder classic Angelina always showing her kind side and the heartfelt moments didn't end there inside the Sala Grande theater during the world premiere of Maria the audience broke into an 8-minute Standing Ovation and Angelina she couldn't hold back her tears she wiped them away turned her face a few times to regain composure and hugged director Pablo lí and the cast what an emotional moment this film is already shaping up to be a major Oscar Contender possibly putting Angelina back in the best actress Race For The First Time in 15 years this is the hardest thing I've ever done I was terrified can you believe it's been that long since her nomination for the changeling in 2009 and let's not forget her Oscar win for Girl Interrupted back in 2000 it's high time she snags that statuette again I'm I'm in shock and I'm so in love with my brother right now during a press conference earlier Angelina opened up about how she connected with the legendary Greek opera singer Maria Callis it is often other people's perception of a woman um that defines sometimes too much who she is and who she was or what she intended she talked about relating to Call's softer side the part that felt too vulnerable for this tough world I share her her vulnerability more than anything Angelina shared that playing Maria callus was a kind of therapy she never knew she needed I had no idea how much I was holding in and not letting out she said well there's a lot I won't say in this room okay it's you probably know or assume could this be a nod to her ongoing family drama with Brad Pit it certainly sounds like it so playing Maria wasn't just about nailing the technicalities of Opera it was an emotional experience helping her find her voice and fully Express herself I felt responsible to her and to Opera and to um people who who who she means a great deal to as she put it you have to give every single Part of Yourself sounds like this role really meant a lot to her um well everybody here knows I was I was terribly nervous I spent uh almost 7 months training um because when you work with Pablo you can't you can't do anything by half could this be Angelina's next big Oscar moment whatever happens she's already made a powerful impact at Venice but try as she could Jolie couldn't avoid the drama the thing is Brad Pit's not staying out of the spotlight either he's showcasing wolves an action thriller directed by John Watts yep the guy behind Spider-Man no way home pits teaming up with George Clooney again playing a pair of Lone Wolf fixers on the same job classic pit Clooney Vibes right I'm here to take care of your problem who called you but here's where things get spicy just last month Jolie asked pit via her lawyer to drop a lawsuit against her the couple's been locked in litigation since 2021 over Jolie's Secret sale of her shares in chatau miraval you know about love about I would say trust um trust in the person you love trust in your intuition Jolie's Camp says she wants pit to withdraw the suit so they can finally move on but if he doesn't she's ready to fight back with evidence to prove him wrong the winery battle just the tip of the iceberg though Jolie also got ongoing abuse allegations against pit stemming from an incident on private flight in 2016 things are far from settled between these two you can absolutely madly love the same person you want to kill and if that wasn't enough it turns out their kids Shiloh Zahara and viven have recently dropped the pit and are now going by joliee as for Brad's relationship with the kids these days it's a tangled web he has virtually no contact with his adult children but still sees the younger ones it's a complicated situation all around turn my own kids against me but fear not Venice isn't the ground zero for a Jolie pit Showdown Festival organizers have made sure these two won't be crossing paths I'm just asking you for a little bit of help just get me a little bit closer Angelina made a grand appearance on Thursday August 29th and she was heading straight to tell your ride with Pablo larine right after and Brad's Premiere is on Saturday breathe out no surprise run-ins to worry about I just have to schedule things properly and make sure I don't get over despite earlier rumors about them staying at the same Hotel the organizers are keeping things smooth ensuring these two Hollywood icons steer clear of each other so while the drama is real it won't be playing out on the Venice red carpet unless of course something goes arai and then well we will end up with a front row seat to The Showdown of the century do you want to hurt me H hurt me I don't want to hurt just do it hurt me but hey this wouldn't be the first time the V Film Festival has seen some controversy remember the drama from the 2023 biion Al that year the festival was packed with bigname Premier but not all of them were welcomed with open arms Roman pansy's the palace Luke besson's Dogman and Woody Allen's cou desant were three films that stirred up quite the debate the controversy arose because all three directors had been accused of which added a significant layer of drama to the event critics were torn should these films even be at Venice some journalists even refuse to review them at the premiere of Allen's film protesters clashed with security shouting no rape culture before being led away it was a chaotic scene adding to the already heated atmosphere the cases surrounding these directors are different but the similarities made them a Hot Topic in Venice palansky fled the US in 1978 after being charged with a 13-year-old girl and has since faced multiple accusations film director Roman palansky has been a fugitive from us Justice since admitting to the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl in 1977 Besson has also been accused of SE though in some instances charges were dropped or never pressed so I'm not very I'm not very disappointed by that Allan was alleged to have abused his adopted daughter Dylan Pharaoh in 1992 a claim that was investigated but didn't lead to criminal charges I was sexually assaulted as a 7-year-old I would say I would have said he touched my private parts mhm okay okay which I I did say all right the inclusion of these films sparked a broader discussion about how European attitudes towards these scandals differ from those in the US until recently all three directors were celebrated in Hollywood with palansky even winning an Oscar for The Pianist in 2003 but times have changed especially after the me tooo movement gained traction in 2017 Festival director Alberto Barbara defended the decision to include these films speaking of palansky he mentioned the history of art is full of artists who were criminals and we nonetheless continue to admire their work it's really a sort of wide open F uh window over the world he noted that Allan had been completely absolved and argued that ongoing hostility towards him was absolutely incomprehensible sure if by admire he means debate endlessly and have awkward conversations at dinner parties then we're all on the same page Barbara wasn't the only one with strong opinions when Allan arrived at the Leo for his Premiere he was met with a standing ovation from much of the European press it seems some folks believe that a round of applause can sweep everything under the rug if only it were that easy and I've had over my lifetime much undeserved praise and enormous amount of attention and respect oh and if the controversy wasn't enough 2023 also saw Hollywood strikes cast a shadow over the festival with actors and writers on strike many big names were absent making it a very different Venice Film Festival than usual but the debates and drama those were very much still there solidarity with the the writers and the actors and like their fight is the fight for all filmmakers and it's against greed and profit as for what's stirring the pot this year Alberto Barbara the festival's director ctor isn't expecting any Shockers like in past years according to Barbara this year's films are diving into heavy topics like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza he's hoping these films will spark thoughtful discussions rather than controversy Cinema is not there to give us simple response to difficult problems but it's a fantastic tool to better understand the a complicated situation so while there might be some intense conversations don't hold your
