West Linn's Sam Leavitt Named Starting QB At ASU | Dirt & Sprague

one other starting quarterback was named yesterday and then we'll get to some audio in the college football world uh this was a guy who is relevant for different reasons one because he's local too because he left when the new coach went to his school uh Sam levit we all remember Sam levit local Prospect and he he originally went to Michigan State transferred out of Michigan State when Jonathan Smith was hired and he transferred to Arizona State and Kenny Dillingham has named him his starting quarterback in year two after having rashada last year for a year as a fresh didn't go great up and down season not a great roster he has decided to name red shirt freshman transfer Sam levit so we got the local kid getting the job down there I believe their first game of the season against is against Wyoming yeah uh the westlind kids get a start in the Big 12 I don't have high expectations for ASU this year but exciting to see a local kid latch on and get a starting job is he West View or Wes Lyn oh good I know oh I thought it was Wes ly well I think we got a B Nick situation I think he was at one and then went to the other oh he transferred is that what you're telling me right now yeah it or that or text police help us out here let's see Dilly Dilly congratulations to Sam levit local guys y always root for him um guys my wedding this this feels I don't know if you agree with this this feels like a a sneaky big year for Dilly you're to you're already going there with with Dilly and your two not in terms of like you need to be a seven plus win program but but we need to see it and unfortunately the nil World Mario just did an interview um on this topic he got a 10e deal bu Miami to leave Oregon right mm and he admitted like this is kind of it year three is huge for us the portal um the contracts these guys get the expectations now Arizona State fans don't have those expectations the ud does yeah it's not Miami but him just basically saying this could be it for me with a 10year deal I probably not going to fire him but like this is massive coaches don't get these eight years to build up programs and Arizona State's been delt a weird hand their former athletic director hired his former client and they ran it into the ground with NI NCAA infractions and then that guy just went to got an cushy ESPN job and the former agent turned ad is left and now there's new president and that guy screwed the entire Pack 12 because he was best friends Larry Scott like Arizona State's kind of been at the center of all of this crap filled stuff the Pack 12 got dealt and I I just think when you're building it he's got a he's a young 30s coach year two you lost rashada that's devastating but now you've got levit who was a for I he was a highly tired of recruit coming out of West li like what are we going to make of Arizona state if they're a four- win team you're just going to keep saying well next year like these guys don't get six seven years anymore the portal nil window uh shortens that life span for coaches andely does he's coming from Oregon where he got what for the one year he was the OC I'm the guy who turned B niick around I'm the OC Guru and he earned that title after a season at Oregon with B Knicks but it you know I just I think you want to see something and being a three or four- win team doesn't show me anything I think the question that I would ask so if they win 4-8 this year that would technically be an improvement they were three and N last year so baby steps not a big one but technically Dion wins five games are we doing the same thing in Colorado absolutely not but we also I mean he will be treated drastically different absolutely um I I think the question that I would ask is where how are they recruiting in the 25 and the 26 cycle because I think that's where well the Big 12 isn't recruiting well not great at all and where do they fall into that category the best one and they're like they they were barely top 20 because I do think everything that you're saying is true in the sport as a whole I just I don't know and maybe Arizona state is the sleeping giant that we've talked about our entire lives when are we going to stop that but I just and to the joking point on that like I don't know if I hold them to that same standard they they're 43rd 40 in the country right now they're 4 and for the 25 class Houston uh West Virginia uh going through this on the Fly UCF is in the Big 12 Big 12 UCF yeah I meanig 12's got a few of those you're like wait they're oh that's right they're in the I recalculate this but like my point is like they're middle of the road in the Big 12 and the Big 12 is not good at recruiting so I I think that's the tough part is I just I don't have those same expectations at a place like Arizona State Utah by the way and Utah yeah and Utah has never been any they've never been a top 15 recruiter they've always been a development program um I just I I guess I don't hold their feet to the fire that the way that I would other places I think other places have an ability to flip and turn and win right away like Lincoln Riley at USC for example you're at freaking USC and you have the ability now to overhaul and over change your roster from year to year through the transfer portal and go get talented players that can help you win and you should be able to recruit at a high level like places like USC and Miami I have no problem saying dude if you can't do it in three years how many more years am I going to give you cuz a lot of places but you would say that about USC they I would well they won 11 games in in year won they absolutely did within generational quarterback an all-time great and they also were very fortunate to win a handful of those gam and then they went seven and five in year two I'm just saying if I'm not firing Lincoln Riley I'm just saying if he goes seven and five this year again yeah I have no problem saying where are we going what are we doing and the same exists for Mario I I don't have that with like if they go 4 this year at ASU I'm not going to sit there and say what the hell's wrong with no I'm not saying you fire him or that you should be like saying he's not worthy you can certainly be a 4 and8 team and maybe you're more competitive in games that you just end up slipping but like what if they repeat with three wins yeah it'd be disappointing if you don't make progress it'd be disappointing and so that's why like I'm you want to see steps at least you want to see some sort of linear like okay you're not going to get the nine wins this year but can you get to five can you get to four and just show an improvement cuz the schedule should be easier for them Kansas State and well it should it I mean do you think they're going to have this year they had to play two of the best teams in college football last year in Washington and Oregon and they damn near beat Washington and Oregon uh obliterated them yeah the the Washington the best I'm going to see if they play are they better than Kansas State no I wouldn't pick them at all in the Big 12 right so but I still think the schedule is more manageable this year than what they dealt with last year h i and I just don't know if they have the talent to say that I don't think the is better than the Pack 12 was last year so like to that point I I would concede but I think the Big 12 is a lot of good teams maybe maybe a great team and we'll wait and see on that y but a lot of good teams Utah Kansas schools West Virginia seems to kind of be getting into this conversation people like I just think you go down the laundry list of schools where is Arizona State in that yeah are they at the very bottom I don't know if they're the worst team in the Big 12 but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they were yeah I don't know what to expect from Houston Houston's restarting with a new coach they're restarting BYU's been a pretty big disappoint seems like everybody thinks Kanani's this is kind of it for him and not expectations with them so there's another one uh Texas Tech is hitting the reset button a little bit as well Tyler shuk transferred again well Tyler Shuck's not very good no he's like 25 years old he's starting at Louisville now he's like the second brexton Burmeister all these fors keep going it's like has a pretty good reputation so like they are in the bottom tier of that conference is my point yeah and I don't disagree with that at all um interesting here though Sam Lev winning the job local kid always cool when you see that happen uh he's going to be the starting quarterback at ASU this year they play their first game on the 31st night game little uh Big 12 after dark against Wyoming the Cowboys are coming to town much like uh the Steelers yesterday did not anticipate this much Arizona State talk ASU debate right there felt good got a little spicy I did feel bad for Dilly last year with the rashada stuff I'm like hey he got rashada that's you know that was a good get because of what had happened and it was like of course I think he bounces because George is like hey come be our Dante Moore and that's where I think I I look at Arizona state is not a sleeping giant it's an irrelevant program it has been for 97% of my life it's a joke that we often use the stadiums run down it's it's just not it's not a great football program it never has been never passionate fan base no they don't care and it's just that's not a great sports city down there um and and I think for a lot of those reasons I look at them as a mediumsized fish swimming with a lot of big fishes and I you're going to get eaten yeah they they are going to lose guys in the like Dillingham last year during press conferences after games I remember watching his post Oregon press conference where he's like begging he's like if you want to get on that level donate you want to get on that you want that Talent on the roster donate I need nil money I need to go buy these guys and I can't afford it right now and I just don't think that they have the infrastructure and so I look at I look at a lot of these middle tier jobs and I think ASU definitely falls into that category and say man if you can find a way to Center out around you know like you know put the put the plane on cruise control at like seven and5 and occasional eight and four yeah good job buddy you're doing an awesome job I agree with you get there in three or four years I also what I really like about his approach so far early is he's already come out and basically said if you can't adapt and evolve in this shut up or get out get out of the sport and it's eating him alive already very quickly in Arizona State and he's already calling other coaches out so I love that you can also the way Brady talked about quarterback development earlier in the show you can make a really good argument of this in college where these Arizona State like programs somehow talk themselves into no we should be winning the Big 12 we should be better that dude is an Arizona State guy yeah they they were out his wedding like that guy is my wedding he he was as teary and emotional getting that job as anybody he's what is he 35 dude he is so young 34 like this is a mid-30s year old coach just turned 34 and so it's like I say what is it you're to do you take the positive steps only because I've seen the sport and how they give nobody patience yeah you can make an argument like that guy's 30 can we give him till he's 40 yeah give him five years at least you know what I mean like bare minimum if you're not competing in the transfer portal nil space but that's he's also dealing with sanctions too because ASU was hammered a little bit with scholarship limits and all that cuz her Edwards not only didn't win he was also a cheater people who run those that sport are stupid and impatient and so it's like I just I hope for his sake that they do show some progress even if it's a four- win team a competitive one we'll see what they do love it
