Beetlejuice Beetlejuice | Movie Review

Burton and First Movie I just want you all to know that you've been making up rumors that my movie was coming back for years now in 2008 they were saying I was getting a sequel on Facebook well guess what I'm back baby it's showtime I realize it's not a good impression what's up flick fans Beetlejuice Beetlejuice don't say it again if you say it again he shows up I'm right here baby the living the dead can they coexist now it's my chance after family tragedy three generations of de's family return home to Winter River still Ed by Beetlejuice Lydia's life has turned upside down when her teenage daughter astd accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife this is directed by Tim Burton let's start there Tim Burton I love a lot of his older movies I don't like a lot of his newer films I feel like he just hasn't had the juice as of late so I was excited to see Beetlejuice again obviously but I was also excited to see if Tim Burton could you know bring the magic Once More by the way you asked me to bring this back so this film is rated pgy 13 is violent content bloody images strong language suggestive material brief drug use it's definitely one for older kids older teenagers maybe not the youngest though like not necessarily a six or seveny old I think a 13 14 year old could handle it because they have iPads Austin do you like the first Beetlejuice of course I like the first Beetle juu to hear my full thoughts I am also simultaneously hopefully posting a review for the first Beetlejuice over on my Burks react YouTube channel the link will be down here but I want to say I didn't know how excited I was for this film until I was walking into that theater with a packed Crowd by the way it was an early fan screening 10 minutes from my house of course I had to do it but man oh man people were pumped to see this it is a pop culture staple especially around this time of the year and it's just a beautiful balance of comedy and horror of fantasy if you will and I love exploring the afterlife in Exploring The Afterlife this universe because the way it's handled with these Fantastical Productions and the set design in general is just so good in both of these movies but also the silly and ridiculous ideas that it's posing when dealing with the afterlife I will say about the sequel it actually manages to handle that even better in this film I think there are more interesting ideas that were brought up now you got your silly bits like the whole Soul Train thing going to the great beyond we go on to the good place or the bad place and some of those ideas carry over others there a little ridiculous but they're in here to inject a little bit of style and humor but when you actually think about what Beetle ju Beetle ju is doing it's handling death in a very interesting way not necessarily a way where all of our family members are mourning when someone passes they are absolutely but because the Deets family is so aware of how things work because they sought in the first movie it's more so a celebration of life so the death we're dealing with at the beginning of this film you don't see a lot of what you would normally see in a movie like this even a comedy right it's handled in a in a very authentic way which I appreciate but there are things that happened throughout the film that in reality would be tragic especially if a lot of things would have ended up happening the way that they were going yeah very tragic but because almost everyone in this family almost is fully aware of how this works they handle it in such a different way and so the ideas that a a silly little sequel to Beetlejuice is posing are actually a lot deeper than I expected and I found the themes to resonate even more Austin who cares about the themes it's a horror Mr Juice and His Ex Wife comedy was it funny was it scary was Michael Keaton awesome uh yes kind of absolutely Michael Keaton is amazing in this film I mean just as good in this movie voice is a little deeper for sure but just as good as he was in Beetlejuice he's bringing the charm when he needs to but he's also on the run because his crazy ex-wife well she's crazy she's hunting him down and she's doing everything she can to find him now that story point I think was a little too much because there's a lot going on in this movie and that was the one that I felt fell the flattest but what it gives Beetlejuice the ability to do is inject even more humor than we already would have in the story and that was great there's even a backstory given to Beetle Juice here and I thought that was going to be ridiculous I rolled my eyes the thought of it but you know what it was actually handled to Perfection and that little voiceover thing that he did was really funny now Monica Belushi who plays dores she wasn't really given a lot to do she's definitely threatening and they put that on display the way they did that with uh CGI and practical effects a nice mixture there was awesome but she doesn't really get a lot to say or do beyond that and I felt as if that entire character and story was mishandled from that point of view you Cast and Characters also have just a lot of characters here in general you have Jenna orte who plays our daughter and I love the fact that they didn't just make her do the same thing she always does a little bit different and that was really interesting she goes off does her own thing there's a little bit of a romantic story in there with Arthur Ki as Jeremy I enjoyed their chemistry but that's yet another story that I felt they're they're trying to make you feel a lot from that relationship and I like their chemistry on screen but I'm sitting back going I wish we had more between them once we get to the resolution of that story uh and again not that I wanted this movie to be longer but it felt almost as if it could have been a limited series because with those two stories you also have Justin throw character and the fact that he wants to get married to our core character here in Lydia wona Ryder is great I knew she would be great fits right back into that role but that's yet another thing we have to pay attention to then you have William defoe's character and he's like the underworld detective of sorts and so he's trying to do his thing now his character brought the humor which I really enjoyed and I actually liked his inclusion into this film but that's something else that we're having to try to focus on and eventually there's so Overstuffed but Gets Better many things at play we're cutting back and forth and we're just getting so many establishing shots of this town and by the time you start to get to that resolution it does Focus up and it brings everything together beautifully but I'm thinking to myself did we really need all of those story points I don't think we did I think we could have cut one or two and we would have gotten to the same place by the end of the movie now the place that we get to is everything you want I'm sitting here in the first 15 minutes thinking man I just there's a lot going on some of the humor is not Landing some of the moments are a little bit awkward and honestly I was ready to call this movie a bust after 15 minutes because frankly I just wasn't into it and my LoveHate relationship with Tim Burton well it wasn't getting any better because there was just so much going on but as it goes into the second act it starts to focus up and really when beetle juice gets called called for the first time in the movie that's when I started to get on board with the ride and the journey because what we begin to focus on especially going into the third Act was important I appreciate that importance the humor clicks a lot better and those horrific moments that again aren't going to scare me but they're going to scare like younger family members that I have and you take your family to this because really it's a family movie even though it's a family movie they do use a a spef specific curse word in a PG-13 film that I thought was just it was a brilliant use of that word my God it was so brilliant honestly the best thing I can Subplots and Screen Time say it has all of those things that made some of those classic Tim Burton movies not only successful but charming and entertaining and not that you're going to turn your brain off and watch these films but you don't have to think too hard when watching a movie like Beetlejuice or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice it's made for the audience to just have some spooky and silly and comedic fun and watch an incredible actor slash comedian because he was back in the day do his thing with Beetlejuice now I'm not saying he has a lot of screen time he has about as much as he had in the first film which isn't much I think it was like 17 18 minutes in the first movie but when he's on screen he elevates those moments as well as giving us other compelling characters the deet family they're all really Charming compelling entertaining you have some of these side players like defo who is awesome but again his story Justin throw storyline is and all of those things it just tries to cramp pack too much and so with all my story issues with some of my pacing problems and the fact that the movie was not selling me in the first 15 minutes I sat back I gave it a chance and I walked out of the theater saying you know what I was entertained man I had some fun not all the CGI looks good some of the CGI a little cheap doesn't look great but you mix those two things together and you get something that like subverts reality in this crazy way and there's even an animated sequence a clamation sequence which felt just so Tim Burton and I love the fact that he integrated that in there and so little bit of sequelitis for sure way too many things going on for sure but again it all does come together and that final sequence in the church was so freaking entertaining before I give you my I want Final Thoughts to step back and say thank you all for watching and supporting these reviews I know I say it all the time but it means the world to me if you want to drop a like it's the best way to support this Channel and grow this Channel and it tells me you like these kinds of reviews and if you want to drop a like for the new background I may keep it I kind of like it let me know what you think down below and follow us on movie mode the movie mode podcast uh 2hour podcast every week and I'm going to force Ryan to talk about this film he probably doesn't want to Beatle 2 has a lot going on on throughout the first two acts and the story feels overcrowded because of that thankfully the consistency within the entertaining cast of characters and surprising attempts at tackling mortality manage to keep it on track and ultimately deliver a fun finale Katon is the MVP and it will feel like comfort food to hardcore fans of the franchise I don't know if this one will make you a fan of the franchise but for those who love it I think you're going to dig this for those who don't love it maybe give it a chance check it out the Rejuvenation could be enough to turn you around thank you so much for watching I'll see you in my next review which is that could be coming later on today and plenty of things to talk about this weekend my summer movie tier list 50 films were ranking them right here check it out
