West Virginia @ #7 Penn State - 2023 FULL GAME HD 60 FPS

[Music] it's Big Ten Saturday night presented by discover and when you think of college football you think of History you think of pageantry you think of excitement nothing more exemplary of that than State College and Penn State University where today we renew a rivalry from 1992 until now Penn State and West Virginia have not faced off but today that changes and the number seven Nittany lines look to start off what they hope to be a magical season ahead in 2023 with a bang a packed house as you'd expect and here come the Nittany Lions out of the tunnel Todd you've done this walk before you've played in this Stadium you know the emotions these kids they're feeling it right now well they're so ready to play they're tired of hitting each other and really since they stepped off the field in Pasadena there has been great anticipation for the start of the season they think can be awfully special you love James Franklin leading them out year 10 at the helm here in state college for Franklin just a fantastic resume of success including four 11 win Seasons last year that Rose Bowl victory and this is customary he'll stop his players keep them amped up kind of raise that gas tank to full level and then allow them to unleash to this unbelievable atmosphere here at Beaver Stadium here they come thank you [Applause] so much expectation so much promise so much star power on this team as West Virginia takes the field to a full pool of booze but this is exactly what you want if you're a Penn State fan you want the full expectation you want to renewed rivalry you want that juice to start out a season that they hope leads them all the way to the college football playoff and James Franklin has been oh so close over the last several years last year being a great example with Sean Clipper at the helm but this season with Drew Aller who will talk plenty about throughout this game it feels like this could be that magic step for West Virginia a lot of questions to be answered but before we get to them let's go downstairs captain member of our crew with Dave Franklin sky high expectations for your team this season and you open up with an incredible atmosphere here tonight how do you manage your team's emotions to start this game by not talking like that we just we just got beat West Virginia be 1-0 tonight we're appreciative of the crowd and the environment but at the end of the day we gotta find a way to beat a good West Virginia Team all eyes will be on your starting quarterback sophomore Drew Aller what does a successful night look like to him a win a win manage the game get the ball to our Playmakers get us into the right run checks he'll be fine coach thank you so much thank you so much KT appreciate it James Franklin sees in the veteran he knows what to expect in this environment will West Virginia do the same Penn State West Virginia Nittany Lions Mountaineers we start the season Big Ten Saturday night next [Music] expected 107 000 on hand to see Big Ten Saturday night presented by discover here in State College Beaver Stadium raring they have been waiting for this moment for monks and Neil Brown head coach at West Virginia his fifth season in that role 22-25 record this is someone of a Make It or Break It year for Neil Brown and this is one heck of a way to start it out yeah I mean you know a team like Penn State as well respected and with so much expectation it gets your attention and it gives you great focus in Camp West Virginia will see them on offense first the strength of their team is an offensive line that returns all five starters and that is the strength if they can run the football they can quiet this crowd a little bit leany Bishop the man deep for West Virginia along with Justin Johnson Jr it'll be Gabriel wosu number 99 for Penn State who might be the largest punter we've seen in person he is six 75 pounds and he set the Boom Beaver Stadium ready we're underway and this one will fly into the End Zone it tucks back so Garrett green the starting quarterback for West Virginia will start out at his own 25-yard line starting to the final two games of the season last year and he played pretty well in the role he really did I mean he he's a guy who's got a lot of confidence but where he has grown since January is just playing within himself not feeling like he has to make every play and be much more comfortable throwing the football out of the pocket he's always been a good runner and he'll have to be effective as a decision maker in the ball game tonight West Virginia has talked about handling this environment let's see how they do it here pitch it to CJ Donaldson on first down a fantastic back gets to the outside and picks up nine Jalen Reed gets up to him but a nice start for this West Virginia offense led by that fantastic offensive line yeah and a little different look here's Tempo now with formation into the boundary always expect new wrinkles early in the first game play action pass and it's dropped Petey Bishop no make it Cortez Braham was the one as the intended target he had the screen and some solid blocking but CJ Donaldson feels like the real key guy on this offense that if West Virginia is going to keep this close they need a big game out of the sophomore well he was a guy that got moved to running back late last year in the opener against Pittsburgh last year he ran for 125 yards he's big he's fast and he can make people miss and he's already on the board with a good run on first down drop pass sets up third and one Manny Diaz loves to burn pressure on third down from this Penn State Defense right hand in motion handed off Donaldson pushes forward he's got it first down Mountaineers foreign relatively new to being a running back but he looks like he's been a running back his entire career good block by the center Zach Frazier the potential All-American and again the strength of West Virginia is their offensive line and their ability to run the football but Donaldson gets a breather Jalen Anderson's going to come in Richard sophomore from Perry Ohio Kailyn Davis in motion they get it to Anderson Stutter Step move another solid chunk gain this one goes across the 45 to the 46. so the second down in short upcoming and let's take a look at our big shots for today's game start with that West Virginia office yeah well CJ Donaldson and Zach Frazier the center chop Robinson Kaelyn King on the Penn State Defense rain in trouble this is what he can do loses his legs well and slides down getting back to the line of scrimmage set up third and short that was a really nice job by Cole Taylor the tight end who transferred from LSU because he was in a position watch number 87 come into the screen from here he could have gotten The Blind Side block which would have been a penalty but he just kind of turned his body and got in the way of Kobe King and that enabled Garrett green to get close to the first down for other third and short last year West Virginia there's just 41 on third down Donaldson gets back in there converted on the last third and one you hear that lockdown wrapping up yep play clock down under five Donaldson left up in the backfield great penetration Penn State gets home with Adisa Isaac yeah great course to the football by Adisa Isaac I think Penn State was anticipating run because Adisa Isaac did not take any kind of a pass rush move right down the line of scrimmage with quickness and into the backfield and even though they have to punt that is a successful first possession for West Virginia no penalties run the football couple first downs now they can flip the field with a good punt Oliver straw experience punter does get it away for Kalyn Saunders deep to return it is five and he makes the fair catch right there so Penn State deep in their own territory after the 50-yard Boot and Drew Aller will have his first crack as a starter [Music] packed house at Beaver Stadium as the sun sets in State College in All Eyes in this building are on the sophomore quarterback six five two forty three out of Medina Ohio Drew Ellis very very skilled guy but what I like about him right now is just his temperament and even looking into his eyes right there there's a calmness about him and a confidence that he's done the work he's put in the preparation and he's ready for this moment and he believed the missing piece for Penn State if they look to take that next step but the tight end warrant in motion Singleton the running back on first down we'll have to carry up the Middle look at the cut from Nicholas Singleton all Big Ten freshman of the year in the conference last year he shows you why on first down with a big game well right away he shows the difference between being a Freshman and sophomore patients he waited for that play to develop last year he would have hit that ahead of the lineman that time he held off and made it a first down run breathing room after the punch Ed him up to the five goes down run spinning forward and Tackle This Time by Aubrey Burks one of the leaders in that secondary for West Virginia who comes off a stellar season with 66 tackles and Aubrey Burks came flying up out of the secondary trying to load the box that's got to be the philosophy right stop the run and make the Young quarterback beat you throw in the football you cannot give up easy chunk run plays foreign [Applause] Smith expected to slot into that number one slot I mean West Virginia showing pressure Drew Allard changing the play at the line of scrimmage second and seven first throw Corral there is Lambert Smith on the catch makes one man miss and wrapped up after the first down pickup down to the 28 but that's exactly what this offense needs Lambert Smith to step up in a big way he's got to be the guy and watch the block by Theo Johnson number 84. that's what ensured the first down well executed and it came off of a change at the line of scrimmage by Drew Allen recognizing West Virginia had a lot of bodies in there to stop the run make the quick throw and get the first down Allen in their sophomore Seasons expected to be stars as they were as freshmen running behind a great offensive line first down throw for Aller steps up in the pocket fires on the Run way Lambert Smith is gone welcome to the Drew Aller era it's a Penn State touchdown 72 yards country couldn't ask for a better start if you're the highly touted quarterback that everybody's been asking will he be up for the challenge Sanders on for the extra point and it's 7-0 Nittany Lyons well Noah this is what I think makes Drew Aller special he's six foot five 245 pounds but he's going to make the move and a throw that a guy who is much smaller would make steps up and in the pocket away from the pressure off balance different arm slot kind of pack Brook Mahomes like and it delivers a strike the Lambert Smith for the touchdown we saw the audible and the quick throw and then a throw that very few people in college football could make stepping up in the pocket off balance and whipping it out to his number one receiver for a big play touchdown one on one with Aubrey Burks down the field the free safety really gambled on it just missed contact with that deep ball from Aller and we went to practice yesterday Todd that was what stood out among everything with the touch on the Deep ball from the softball yeah I mean again he can do the things that he looks like he should do the Prototype big pocket passer he's got great arm talent but it's the freaky things like that stepping up in the pocket moving throwing on the Move changing the arm slots that are unique for a guy that big and that's what I think is very special about him so four plays later you blink once you miss it Penn State 7-0 as wosu will take it away yes once again secure a Touchback so West Virginia's offense come back out at the 25-yard line against the Stellar Penn State Defense after Drew Aller that was the other thing when we talked to some of the defensive players including Caitlyn King who is an outstanding cornerback for the Nittany Lions we asked them about the fact that Aller hadn't formed an interception about two weeks into camp and he said yeah it hurt them but at the same time it gave him confidence that he would do in the game as well that's right I mean you're happy and comfortable that your quarterback's going to take care of the football and oh by the way he's got the ability to make big plays too the second opportunity for Garrett green he will come out there with Donaldson and put Davis in motion hand it off for Donaldson with a solid hole and Donaldson continues to chew up yards across the 30. you know Donaldson was off to a great start very similar to Nicholas Singleton and katron Allen of Penn State but in the seventh game against TCU after gaining 100 he broke his ankle [Applause] see if that second effort gets in there it looks like they'll give him enough for the first down just across the 35 Galen King gets him down low visibility if he can stay healthy he's going to give West Virginia a chance to have a successful season because he is a dynamic talent and if he doesn't get hurt in game seven we're talking about him the same way we're talking about Nicholas Singleton you know freshman All-American on the verge of coming back as a sophomore as a big time player eight touchdowns last year in just seven games that led the team crossetta Downs for green drawback easy throw sniffed out there's no getting past Keaton Ellis the captain of this defense as he comes up to make the play and lose yardage really nice play in Space by Keaton Ellis Ellis you know you you worry about tackling in a first game open field tackle Keith Nellis very sure tackler on that play read it and then made the nice tackle in space [Applause] many stars of the secondary with Talent King Johnny Dixon Jalen Reed coming back Kevin Winston cam Miller expected to contribute even true freshman Zion Tracy I can attend Donaldson pushes the pile for three and it sets up third and long [Applause] this is where those two defensive ends really can be dangerous are these are Isaac and Shop Robinson and the guy that West Virginia I think has to try to get involved in the game a little bit soon is Devin Carter the wide receiver who transferred from North Carolina State he's a big body guy he's at the top of the screen right now working against cam Miller third and seventh green flushed out Corner tracking him down he gets away but he won't get there gets the 40 before being escorted out of bounds by cam Miller and likely another punt for West Virginia well you just see the speed watch Abdul Carter he's in here right and then he's going to fake and come around the outside and even though he doesn't get the sack or the tackle for loss he disrupts the play completely and forces Garrett green to lead the pocket and run out of bounds short of the first down defensive coordinator Manny Diaz trusts that about Abdul Carter as Oliver straws back on to punch it away to Kalyn Saunders said make the easy play because you make it look extraordinary Dodgers goals for the fair Catch and once again we'll make it at the 18 yard line a Penn State offense comes back onto the field after a four-play drive right down the field that resulted in our outstanding touchdown throw from Drew Aller Penn State back on already up seven nothing [Music] big ten Saturday night is brought to you by the Xfinity 10g Network made for streaming live sports and by Genesis striking design intuitive technology Lux is in the details well this rivalry began in 1904 60th meeting this one back in 1984 snapped a 28 win a 28 really game winless streak for West Virginia they would eventually win that one and in 1988 had something that was known as the play in West Virginia lore but I know Todd you were unblemished in this rivalry as quarterback 3-0 we had the better teams first hand offers to Patron Allen today who came off his own Stellar freshman season 867 yards 10 touchdowns a year ago first Penn State freshman with a three touchdown game since Austin Scott in 2003. yeah I mean both of these guys are fun to watch and they're both big physical backs both over 225 pounds a little bit different style Singleton maybe more of the home run hitter but very versatile both of them here's a little Full House backfield both tight ends along with Singleton in the backfield [Applause] [Music] Johnson Jr from Ontario play clock down to five for Allen I'll hand it off to Singleton generally a good idea as he squeezes through the hole and picks up the first down you mentioned these two tight ends and when you have one back and two tight ends that's called 12th Personnel one back two credits Penn State is a heavy 12 formation because of the versatility of their tight ends and it's been that way the last couple years they can line up in the backfield they can line up at the also go out and play wide out and that puts stress on the defense because normally with two tight ends you think you need bigger people in on defense but they can spread you out with those guys as well same formation on first down action for Allen steps up in the pocket Aller is going to look to escape and get positive yardage he avoids the sack picks up two and that's another just example of what Aller brings is the total package with the athleticism and the incredible Armstrong West Virginia got pressure again now the last time West Virginia brought pressure he was able to step up avoid it this was an unblocked rusher forced him up in the pocket Lee Koba also presenting pressure from the middle linebacker and are able to get him on the ground Penn State playing without Landon tagwell who had to retire earlier this week due to medical reasons was expected to start at offensive line so JV Nelson in there there's a screen set up for Tyler Long the kid talking in front of picked up that first down the strength of the tight ends and you mentioned the versatility because you called that 12 Personnel out you know James Franklin told us if offensive coordinator Mike ursic had his pick he'd go 11 which means he'd have a ton of wide receivers but with these guys you've got to include him well and that was a great example of Nick Singleton being willing to block he was the lead blocker for the tight end screen on that play and that's why Penn State ended up with a first down [Applause] first man there one of the emotional and physical leaders of this West Virginia Defense now in his senior season expected to have a big year ahead this is the defense that really struggled last year they gave up over 40 points five times in the season alone throwing the pressure get rid of it for Singleton can he make one man miss he cannot gets wrapped up at 45. and it'll set up third in short Tyron Bradley eventually gets to him well you can see the strategy for West Virginia they want to come after the Young quarterback another free rusher and Drew does a nice job of getting rid of the football to an outlet receiver he was looking to go down the field felt the pressure and dumped it off for a positive game third and five here's a test for Aller pressure look again look at all those bodies around the line of scrimmage for West Virginia through Aller changing the play Clifford in motion Aller heals the hide snap plenty of time that was batted up and picked off no it's dropped Davion Hawkins was the one who batted it in the air and then beanie Bishop looked like he got underneath it just couldn't secure it it will be a Penn State punt well West Virginia did a good job of confusing the quarterback because they showed pressure and then they dropped into Zone and you could see there was a little confusion and Drew Aller he drifted and very lucky that that was not picked off and instead they get to punt the football away good disguise by the West Virginia Defense would have been aller's first career interception to get some time last year on the penalty it's our first of the game which will let us hear our referee Mark Kozinski for the first time today before the ball was snapped false start offense number five five yard penalty remains four thousand so that'll back it up after the missed you there from Amari Evans you know Noah a West Virginia obviously the underdog coming in a good first offensive possession that was a good defensive possession after giving up the big play for a touchdown they didn't hang their head they came back out and forced to punt their next possession Riley Thompson gets it away and this one will Sail Out of Bounds as Preston Fox just lets it Go Penn State's still with the early 7-0 Virginia looking for momentum [Applause] Todd I know that I saw the twinkle in your eye when you got here like you could still get out there and you know give him a couple passes you don't have this speed though or change the direction there's no way [Applause] that's highly entertaining the fans and they got real bumped up when it made it to the end zone well they get extra pumped up for this Penn State Defense that was just glorious last year at times Western fox in motion on first down and Green's going to keep it use those legs Double forward to pick up 11. he is a very slippery Runner and a very willing Runner he's courageous to run the football but he makes people Miss he's got good feel for running I think the fact that they've run the ball now for over 45 yards they have got to try to throw the football I think and get some chunk plays down the field try to loosen up this Penn State Defense they've had some success running it very green two of three but only three yards on passing down the field is what they need to do next to his running back Johnson and that's just going to fall incomplete after the back down from Johnny Dixon and this is a cat Blitz the corner from the short side of the field is blitzing and Garrett green read it he's trying to get the ball right away out to take advantage of the blitz trying to get the ball to his running back Justin Johnson but a really instinctive play by Johnny Dixon who has just gotten better and better every time he steps on the field we all talk about Caleb king but the coaches have talked about how good Johnny Dixon has been on the other side sets up second down box the motion man once again green keeps green fires too high he was looking for fox out of the backfield and Kevin Winston in coverage another third and long and another likely Blitz situation for this Penn State Defense yeah third down and long yardage is not where you want to be I mean Penn State last year was first in the Big Ten in terms of forcing long yardage situations on third down and that plays right into the way they like to be aggressive green escapes green angling to the outside got a block and green is going to get the first down hit came in no flag down as Zaki Wheely Wheatley came through and delivered the pain on green but what a clay just to kind of navigate through that defense for the extra yards well he gets a great block by his receiver and the receiver makes a clean block right there just gets his body in the way now I'm curious this could have almost been a penalty it looked like he was going into a slide but he took a big hit but it's a big time play by Garrett green and the hit kept them short by a yard so it's fourth and one the push yeah why not got it Zach Frazier's your best player your Center he's starting his 35th game Penn State is not very big on the inside of their defense this right here is where West Virginia feels like they have the advantage the center in their two guards push up front they get the push from behind by trailing Davis the tight end and they easily pick up the first down Trail and Davis that's what he does best he's an outstanding blocks in tight end but that young man Zach Frazier has been a day one starter since 2020 from 2020 first true freshman to do so at West Virginia at the offensive line position since 1980 it's green airs it out wide open down the sideline it's caught Dylan Carter the MCC 's transfer Mitch felt on a big game now this is a busted coverage because there's a corner Blitz coming from the other side and for whatever reason nobody picks up Devin Carter there's two receivers they put Johnny Dixon in a bind but there should have been more coverage to the wide side of the field and credit Garrett green for finding it seeing the mistakes and getting the ball to the transfer from North Carolina State Devin Carter West Virginia threatening for the first time with under a minute to play in this first quarter Graham in motion play clock at three and Donaldson the handoff bounces off the ground Donaldson stumbles inside the five well again you see the power six foot one 238 pounds running inside because again the center and the two guards that's where they feel they have the advantage you see Frazier coming off to the second level hitting the block on the linebacker Deluca and the big back running right in behind him what an impressive drive for the Mountaineers right now but as Neil Brown told us when we talked to him the other day we've got to get in the ball in the red zone and when we do we've got to score touchdowns we can't settle for field goals when we get in the Red Zone perfect opportunity right here they got 12 Personnel again but they won't get the playoffs [Applause] so West Virginia will have a great opportunity to try to get things even to start the second quarter the energy is here and Penn State leads by seven after one [Music] foreign coverage is brought to you by Ford first quarter in the books Penn State with the early advantage over West Virginia in this renewed rivalry will welcome you back to State College glad to have you along for the ride this was the first quarter that we were looking to see what was Drew Aller going to look like and that first touchdown was quite impressive yeah I mean he looks comfortable he looks poised he looks under control showed great movement in the pocket and a beautiful throw for the touchdown on the big play on West Virginia's side we said they had to run a football right 60 yards rushing in the first quarter they did what they wanted to do that slows the crowd down a little bit now they're inside the five yard line and have to find a way to get the ball in the end zone and even this ball game up you said it exactly right touchdowns not field goals for West Virginia Garrett green looking a little bit more comfortable now assuming that legitimate role as the starting quarterback for the Mountaineers after taking it on for the last two games of the regular season last year Donaldson stays in there he gives you another threat at this part of the field you're going to focus on Donald send but again remember Garrett green is an outstanding Runner and it gives you an extra blocker if you run the quarterback second and three Donaldson the handoff Donaldson keeps the legs churning and they're gonna Mark him just shy yeah but it's going to be a first down right yes I mean even if he doesn't get in the end zone they got a fresh set of downs again running inside inside Zone behind their strength watch him get a push at the end of this play that Zach Frazier the center that just turns and pushes him for that first down almost into the end zone with those eight rushing touchdowns in seven games last year they run the same play I mean she keep running inside behind Zach Frazier don't do anything different you don't need to first and goal Donaldson bulldozers touchdown West Virginia Chad Scott is the offensive coordinator and the running back coach he said this is where our strength if we have an area where we think we can win in this game it's inside running behind our All-American potential Center Zach Frazier and they did that beautifully in this whole possession and CJ Donaldson Powers it into the end zone a very good responsive drive after the defense got the stop on third down the offense comes through with a chance to tie the football game Michael Hayes on to try to tie this game with the extra point we are all knotted up seven a piece early second quarter Todd you talked about really controlling the game with that run game and that offensive line 111 combined starts up front returning for West Virginia the second most in the country behind Kansas State and with CJ Donaldson who I know he touched on it briefly was not a running back when he came to campus he's only a sophomore he just started playing the position last year but the comfortability and really the the natural intuitiveness that he comes every day excited to to learn more about how to play the position properly we saw all of it on that last Drive absolutely did I mean and he's a guy who's just going to continue to get better as a running back you know last year it was just kind of learning what to do and now I think he's being taught a little bit more okay this is why we're doing it I think he's understanding defensive football better this year and he's a guy who's he he mentioned it eagerness and an Intrigue in the position he wants to keep learning and uh you see the physical ability Singleton and Allen back to receive the mark of a great quarterback how do you respond after a little bit of a low light and for Drew Aller a near interception it was dropped at the end of that last offensive possession how can you respond with this game now all knotted up at seven and Singleton are so great returning these kicks that Neil Brown told us when we met with him we gotta kick it out of the end zone we can't even give them a chance to return one on us get this one off just in time and it will be short Singleton will take it out from the goal line Singleton wrapped up Shy of the 20. and for more on CJ Donaldson let's go down to KT yeah guys he finds himself with the Mountaineers only because he stood out in teammate Travis lathan's high school highlight reel recruse took notice of Donaldson's freak skills while scouting Lathan at a game Donaldson was in West Virginia for only about a month playing the position that he was recruited for tight end but there was a need for a running back and Donaldson fit that bill and boy did he ever and he's proving it here tonight guys Donaldson really showing why he's been such a key addition and there's Trey Lathan the redshirt freshman those two teammates at Gulliver prep and Layton expected to have a breakout year this season for the Mountaineers defense yeah that was a two for one for West Virginia two outstanding players recruiting one Penn State's gonna have to take a timeout here that play clock was dwindling all the way down and James Franklin is irate yeah that should never happen particularly at home I don't care if you've got a new quarterback when you're coming off after their change of possession you should know what the play is going to be right you should know what your personnel is and your formation and uh and that's why coach Franklin is upset that's a wasted timeout because you don't have either the right people on the field or the right formation that shouldn't happen coming out of a timeout or a change of possession well James Franklin in year 10 the success is clear they are 33-5 under James Franklin with at least 200 rushing yards and when you've got the running backs of Singleton and Allen along with this offensive line led by Olu fashionu at the left tackle position you expect that to continue this season finally Warren in motion Patron L on the back he got it up the middle and just chopped down and there is Trey Lathan to get to him very quickly on the tackle olufashion knew that left tackle pre-season AP Walter Camp first team All-American last year despite only playing eight games and starting eight games he was second team All-American second Team all Big Ten by the coaches third team by the media he's expected to have a fantastic season and really one of the offensive linemen that most believe will be drafted potentially first in this year's NFL Draft though there's one broken tackle there's two broken tackles and katron Allen with a first down catch and run up 15 yards well one of the things that Mike Gerson said they were going to to do is figure out a way to throw the football to these backs a little bit more a little swing pass get him out there in space it's really just like a running play because you have lineman out in front and you see the tackle breaking ability of katron L mountaineered down on the field is Mike Lockhart that knows tackle we'll have an update as soon as we can when we return [Applause] good news on Mike Lockhart the transfer last year from Georgia Tech walked off on his own power a lot of time on the sideline because of the injury Penn State moving the ball first down out near Midfield good opportunity maybe to take a play action shot play we've got DeAndre Lambert Smith your go-to guy up top to the wide side of the field 72-yard touchdown in the first quarter this time it's our getting punched Tommy with a big Blitz on the QB yeah a little bit of a mishap there Kaden Wallace watching the right tackle 73. he's going to go inside and block nobody and they allow the defensive tackle to come free it wasn't really a tricky stunt just a miscommunication up front by that Penn State offensive line nice sack by the West Virginia Defense sets up second and 16 as Alan stays in there to the air for Allen steps up Allard perfectly delivered sliding drive from Harrison Wells III is expected to be that number two option for Allen but I really like that Drew is doing is when he steps up in the pocket it's only a three-man rush his eyes are down field now you can see Lee Koba is there as the spot number one is he's responsible for the quarterback and I think Drew Aller knows Lee cope is probably a better athlete than me so I'm gonna keep my eyes down field and throw it instead of running Ellen other step picks up two [Applause] but just as a button the Olu fashion conversation up see big 74 right there at the left tackle position he easily could have gone to the NFL after last year he decided to come back he wanted to graduate and he wanted to improve it and really all the margins this season well I think he definitely can improve just all of his techniques he's still got so much upside because he's big he's long he's athletic he was a basketball player in high school he's got unique strength he's only going to get better he has a very high ceiling as an NFL player we're playing on the quick catch and no Real Running Room as he's going to be tripped up Shy of the 45. John Martin who's got legitimate NFL size at that DN spot goes down low to get him [Music] third down and six upcoming for Penn State here Aller six different receivers for seven completions Allen stays in there [Applause] Tyler Warren the tight end slid in the slot play clock down to five hour flushed out on the Run he's got it Keandre and Lambert Smith in stride inside the 20 and dragged down at the 15. [Applause] well here's another thing that you don't expect Drew Aller can do I mean he has to leave the pocket because of pressure he's rolling to his right he's throwing back towards the middle of the field and it's a perfect throw who's received play action this time it's going to go back to McLean along the sideline and he Dives forward they're going to Mark him out of a yard shy of the first down but the big story lines Lambert Smith emerging as a number one and the transfer wide receivers including Malik McLean coming from Florida State and Malik McLean Dante cephas from Kent State they're looking for that third guy to step up dollars going to take it himself and puts the pile forward inside the five it'll set up first and goal a design quarterback run this was not trying to fool anybody you pick up an extra blocker when you run the quarterback so catron Allen becomes a blocker nice job by him Tyler Warren the tight end with a nice lead block and then a big body quarterback protecting the football and getting you close to the goal line meanwhile Sean Martin got undercut looks like he came up a little bit hobbly as he moves off the field this is where Penn State's offense was magnificent a year ago to go situations I love this formation and it's a Singleton touchdown Nittany Lyons it's it's an old-school formation it's like three guys all right you've got two backs these are the two tailbacks they'll block for each other this is a tight end this is a tight end watch the lead block by katron Allen on the touchdown run by Singleton both tight ends with a nice block nice clock by the right tackle Kate Wallace Wing T single T got a formation power football to go live so haydak adds his support Nicholas Singleton finishes off a tribe that was really set up by the big play on the Run Aller delivers all the money for Keandre Lambert Smith for 31 and after Singleton had a Penn State freshman Record 12 touchdowns last year doesn't take them very long for number 13. [Music] yeah you can't entirely understand what Happy Valley has to offer until you experience this 107 000 packed house at Beaver Stadium Journey blaring through the speakers well that's my buddy Guido Delia Who's My Mentor in the TV business he's responsible for the whole game day what music is played when it's played he's the creator of the white out and uh he knows how to push the right buttons for this crowd absolutely crushing it as well Sue will send this into the back of the end zone so West Virginia first two drives 34 yards their last Drive 69 yards and a touchdown 20 plays total 14 on the ground well Zach Frazier is the guy there running behind there's four years starter and watch him use his hands he was a four-time state champion wrestler so he's got very strong hands he understands leverage he understands how to move a guy with his body and West Virginia has had the most success running inside behind their starting center he was never a real vocal leader this year he has become more vocal also got married this off season and he is the Bonafide leader of this offense who had the most fun at that wedding his quarterback who's got the football pitches it back and probably a poor decision Jalen Anderson the running back eventually received the lateral and cam Miller was all over it from the start a little triple option action into the boundary Penn State very disciplined you know the way you stop option football is you have to be disciplined they've got the back covered they've got the quarterback covered and they've got the pitch covered it's just fundamentally good discipline defense by Penn State for a loss of yardage play James Franklin and defensive coordinator Manny Diaz knew that they might see some different stuff from West Virginia knowing what was at stake this season and Diaz really kept preaching on discipline he wanted his players to be as disciplined as possible and follow their rules second down throw it's complete over the middle nice ball from Green better catch from Cole Taylor the LSU transfer well the first throw over the middle they had the one down the sideline to Devin Carter this is another transfer from LSU a big long tight end receiver we talked to offensive coordinator Chad Scott he said he's the best receiving tight end that we've had since I've been here in the five years and uh they utilized him in the middle middle of the field really nicely right there good boys from Green that's where he's taking the real step forward and managing the offense but even being able to stay in the pocket and make those types of throws and off on first down and not a whole lot of running room there as Anderson maybe gains a yard that State trying to sneak bodies up to the line of scrimmage that was a late move by Jalen Reed one of the safeties he was the unblocked guy they're not doing it they're not showing it early but they're trying to bring extra bodies up at the snap to slow down this West Virginia Run game and Todd a lot of credit to West Virginia's offense for handling the environment at that point well they've handled noise they haven't had procedural penalties and they've taken care of the football that's why they're in this football game with seven minutes left in the first half comes that noise they're gonna have to call timeout and there it is that's smart at this point you haven't burned any timeouts that's a good time make sure they're on the same page West Virginia will keep their Drive alive next welcome back to Beaver Stadium we're seeing Garrett green lead this Mountaineers offense and Green's father Charlie was a professional baseball player Garrett spent his entire childhood in clubhouses learning from the pros look at him there Charlie told me Garrett is wired differently because of that he saw what top guys did to get to the top and the experience allowed his son to understand the importance of leadership in the locker room baseball also helped with that throwing arm Charlie told me Garrett got the arm from me and he got the speed from Mom and he plays with hair on this with hair his hair on fire sorry about that time look KT he definitely got the arm strength from the speed you know what else he got him I'm questioning where it came from but that confidence and you're seeing him play with it right here as he swings it to Anderson and lets him just Veer through the defense events for a first down the other thing about that baseball side Todd is you know Patrick Mahomes talks about this all the time with his dad being a pitcher the arm angles right that's what we see out of Garrett green some of the different arm angles and using that athleticism yeah and he didn't have the normal upbringing of a quarterback right he did he played a lot of summer baseball he didn't get trained by you know private quarterback coaches but he's got talent he's got arm talent and Neil Brown first saw him when he was a Youngster about 175 pounds came to camp at Troy and he could swing it down he just got bigger each year and they finally recruited him Dale Brown says he just loves the kid how he improves so he's got a little tripperation here a triple action green the pump the run and ran out of time loses five Dominic DeLuca with a tech well credit the Deep safeties Jalen Reed and Keith Ellis you're trying to fool them with all that action and they stayed deep and had Devin Carter covered and that's why it ended up in a loss he earned it green with a long-rounded situation just overthrows Devin Carter who had separation Kailyn King was knotted up with him and that's exactly the matchup we've been looking forward to but this is exactly what James Franklin was worried about yeah I mean you expect trick plays they've got formation into the boundary but Penn State is not full we saw a great discipline on the option play and watch the discipline here the Deep safeties they're not cool they're back there and Garrett green has nowhere to go with the football that's just excellent discipline by the Penn State Defense third and 15. pressure coming Kareem gets away green taken down Abdul Carter wrapped him up before he gets the sticks and now decision time is a four down territory interesting decision right here I mean we know that Neil Brown is not afraid to go to court on fourth down and it looks like he's going to they were outstanding in this area last year 69 conversion best in the big 12. Donna take some chances against the number 17 in the country on the road fourth and five oh there's that big tight end Cole Taylor watch him and his big body in this situation green fires he threw it behind trailing Ray the freshman and it's a turnover on Downs forced by the Nittany Lions uh Garrett green knows he missed that one [Applause] the protection was there fourth down Garrett green just throws it behind the receiver he had him open and they knew he missed it and they missed an opportunity with that one oh back here in State College about Midway through this second quarter in Penn State with an opportunity to take a two score lead remember they do get the ball to start the second half here after deferring winning this opening coin flip Patron Allen is the running back of the play action bootleg for Aller beautiful ball again it's Harrison Wallace for a first down or more across the 40s and this is a massive possession for this West Virginia Defense as Aller delivers a game well just the accuracy on the Move we've seen him do a little of everything he knows he's got a wrestler coming at him but he keeps his Poise keeps his eyes down field and finds his trailing receiver Wallace for a nice completion you mentioned this is danger zone for West Virginia I applaud them for going for it on fourth down and they came up short but their defense has to find a way to get a stop Allen behind his blockers to the outside and games eight what a luxury to have Singleton and Allen especially for an inexperienced starting quarterback like Allen well you keep them fresh throughout the game they block for each other they have a little different style again Singleton more of the home run hitter and katron Allen kind of more the patient you know kind of jump cut read things but both extremely effective for this Penn State offense packs a punch at 5 11 221 tough to bring down [Applause] better bring your lunch pail I'm trying to tackle this young man [Applause] goes down [Applause] let's take a look at this from the Walmart look from above again it's just power running in front Allen tight end leading they're pulling the backside guard as well JB Nelson and right now they're just trying to impose their will in the running game with their offensive line against this West Virginia Defense as we near the end of the first half Bob you mentioned it West Virginia gave up 40 or more [Music] [Applause] a nice open field Tackle by Lee Coba he was a pleasant guy for us to talk to on the zoom the other day [Music] big smile on his face all the time kids got to gravitate to him other players he's had a tough road to get to where he's at right now but he's got a good chance to have a great season to be an NFL player after this as well from Africa and he was just two years old where his father had to go through East Mississippi Community College where Last Chance U takes place great job by Allen just get rid of it and put in the direction of Patron Allen live to fight another down it'll be third and eight after nice play by Trey Lathan [Music] yeah Latham came unblocked kind of a little stunt he doesn't show Blitz right away pulls the Penn State offensive line they pulled the guard out for protection well-timed Blitz by Lathan and a third long and again the West Virginia Defense if they get a stop here it is a big win as we near two minutes left in the first half huge third and eight Tom Colbert on the chase put it in the spot for Warren but he was out of bounds man what a ball from Aller to just give his Target a chance and yep that left foot was out and he didn't even have control well this was a great pressure by Lee Koba and that's what forced that an inaccurate throw I mean Drew Aller has been very accurate 11-14 for 184 yards in the touchdown but that pass was Aaron because of the pressure by Lee Coleman for a 38-yard attempt from Sanders to haydak who was one for two last season in this one no good so West Virginia gets the stop that they so badly required after the fourth down fail it was the Mountaineers defense that had so many struggles last year coming through in a big way to keep it at a one score game [Music] [Applause] on the Xfinity 10g Network halftime report our crew our Elite crew downstairs will recap the first half a headed to first half here in State College Caleb Williams just continues to show off around the country and what a day for Colorado coach Prime and Shadow Sanders guide the team to their first Victory Travis Hunter is just incredible in that game CJ Donaldson's in there on this first down make the pitch green will keep and he's tripped up from behind at the 25 so Kobe King gets to him now we're under two minutes here so throughout this game so far the new clock Bowl means no stoppage on those first downs like we've seen in the past but under two minutes you get that stop at Trulia pause up until the team gets the line yeah and in a situation like this if you're West Virginia making this first first down is most critical because then that changes if you want to be more aggressive I don't think they're going to get crazy here unless they can make a first down Donaldson's not going to do it and that means the second timeout is going to be followed by James Franklin in Penn State [Applause] so coach Franken recognizing that he's got the two-timeouts to work with prior to that call and they get the kick to receive it in the second half so if they can find a way to get the quick stop and get the ball back and get that double dip towards the end of the first half here I think if you throw the football here if you're Neil Brown you you just call something where you maybe put the quarterback outside and give him a chance to be a running threat if the pass is not there again you want to make that first first down and then you might start to use your own timeouts if you get some momentum but this is the this is the key play right here because if they don't convert here unless it's an incomplete pass James will use that other timeout and then trying to get his offense back on the field with pretty decent field position Derek green 5 of 10 66 yards but as expected West Virginia getting it done on the ground 33 yards from Green 33 from Donaldson seven from Anderson out of the backfield and if you throw it I think you got to look for Devin Carter number five or Cole Taylor number 87. those are the two guys I think and they're on the same side of the field right now to make a play for you in the pass game green will throw three looking to get away he can Garrett green devoured by Curtis Jacobs but a flag does come in in the backfield all the offense number four the penalty is declined fourth down Donaldson called for the hold Penn State's defense gets off the field and gives themselves another chance for points really nice job by Jacobs watch he's gonna rush but he's going to rush under control knowing this quarterback can run the football so he doesn't get out of position and he doesn't get fooled and he's right there to fall back in and make the play on the quarterback [Applause] frustration from Green you know West Virginia and everybody we talked to whether it was the coaching staff whether it was the players in Lee Coba or Aubry Burks or Zach Frazier they all said this is the most talented team we're going to face all year and this defense is the best defense we're going to face all year they've Managed IT well but those players are most certainly going to happen yep they have managed it by not having false starts I mean there's a penalty there but not having careless mental penalties and take care of the football but the key is again now can they finish the half without any more injured you mentioned it there's a huge difference between being down 14-7 on the defensive side to start the third quarter and being down 21-7 even 17-10 to start that second half and knowing Penn State's going to get the ball to come out to start the second half so if if you're West Virginia you're thrilled with how your team has played to this point but you a minute 24 left and it starts with this Punt and the execution of this punt coverage will try to finish out the half with no more points on the board no timeouts for Penn State true Aller is going to get out there with a minute 24 with a chance to show what he can do in those quick Tempo situations away once again for Saunders and he's going to call for the fair Catch and make it oh he got hit after him that's going to be a flag he got pushed in there by a Penn State player I don't think that's going to be a penalty because there was a Penn State player blocking the West Virginia Defender into the returner I think [Applause] you appear to be correct for the for the time being here let's see if we can get a replay to confirm it I think cam Miller number five was tied up with a guy no foul for kick after ferrets the kicking team player was pushed out you're all over it well he really he really wasn't getting blocked doing much blocking he was actually getting thrown by Andrew Wilson lamp number seven of West Virginia into the returner West Virginia got away with that there with no penalty all right a minute 17 now no timeouts this is a really good opportunity if nothing else has a learning opportunity quarterback he loved these situations you practice them all the time no timeouts they started the singer tonight and Singleton bounces to the outside and gets out of bounds drive down from the back of his jersey by Andrew Wilson lamp and that will draw the flag because he get that horse collar towards the end here all right horse collar tackle Defense number seven 15-yard penalty automatic first bounce I'm not sure about that one seeing Terry McCauley he's unsure about that one as well he did get up top and get the helmet though right he had his hand on his helmet on the back of his helmet but he did not grab the back of the Jersey or the shoulder pad so the extra yards gets Penn State already in a mountaineer territory Singleton will Sprout wide Smith who's had two big catches including the long 72-yard touchdown in the first quarterback First Catch of the Day for Lynn flipper let him chew up the yards and get out of bounds inside the 30. the brother of the great five-year quarterback Sean Clifford showing why he has been such a bright spot at Penn State training camp game 17. a really well executed screen middle screen to the little receiver he's a a guy who I think is going to be a really good slot receiver for this offense he's fast he's quick he's got short space quickness and he's always in the right place [Applause] James [Applause] so Harrison Wallace we've seen Drew Allard do a little bit of everything in this first half this is what you expect them to do drop back put that right foot in the ground and deliver a strike to the outside which he does but we've also seen him throw on the Run we've seen him move up in the pocket a little bit of everything out of this Young quarterback who is now 13 of 16 for over 200 yards and now West Virginia is going to take their second time out 20 seconds into this drive and Penn State already in the Red Zone all right let's bring in Terry McCauley because I think we're still a little curious as to what happened on that horse collar call Terry what'd you see well no it's certainly not a horse collar he didn't grab the inside of the collar and pull down but on our last replay what we see his hand here's to get in the ear hole of the helmet helmet opening so I believe it actually was a personal foul for grabbing the helmet opening not a horse collar it'd be right here it looks like that finger's inside the ear hole which is illegal it's a 15-yard penalty not a horse collar but still a foul so it all comes out even yeah when it's all said and done but that's like technicality is certainly true and Terry's all over it per usual so again 20 seconds gone in this drive for Drew Aller he's orchestrated it perfectly without any timeouts well that's what you want to see out of the young guy I mean he's very much in control of the situation with no timeouts and he's got him right down there by the goal line and now he's thinking okay worst case scenario we go in at halftime 17-7 that's the worst thing that can happen right now for Penn State coach down throw for Allen looking Endzone oh newly intercepted by Benny Bishop he was looking for Lambert Smith and we saw this almost exact scenario a couple days ago in the Nebraska game that's right and and he got away with it and you wonder if this is going to be like in baseball when you drop a foul ball and the next pitch the guy hits one over the fence because this should have been an interception by beanie Bishop he read it he undercut the route he just didn't catch the football in a game Drew Aller another at bat here with 51 seconds left second time Bishop should have had an interception in this first half she's dropped them both sets up second and ten for Allen surveys go through progressions Ally doesn't like what he sees tries to escape and he won't taken down by Sean Martin four sacks for Martin last year and that won the fifth of his career they'll go quick on Third and long now Penn State has to go back fast but he's in no timeout Allah feeling the pressure again hit as he throws and he just throws it away so there's that worst case scenario yeah and Martin slow to get up a really good job by West Virginia bringing some bodies at Drew Aller two plays in a row after it looked like Penn State was going to capitalize and now not only you get to stop you back up the field goal attempt a little bit as well are you still down after the play Trey Lathan was the one who established that initial pressure on Aller along with Vester renin and now I think it's later correct 19 instead of 91. so late see why they're so excited about this young man he's got some bursts to him that's for sure so Lathan good to see him get up and walk off remember Penn State thought they had the field goal in the bag 38 yards away that so haydak missed on that last possession and this one could be a similar distance and we're in the 35 to 36 yard range [Applause] the Richard sophomore will jog out with a chance to once again extend this 54 yards out to a two-score game ski the holder and a timeout timeout West Virginia their third and final charge timeout 30 second timeout this West Virginia Defense has made some big plays in this game especially considering the way it started with that big big time touchdown from dreweller to DeAndre Lambert Smith and we were curious what they were going to do to respond after the season that they had last year they were disappointed their defensive coordinator Jordan Leslie was just disappointed and despite potentially going down by two scores here you feel pretty good about where you are on both sides of the football absolutely I first of all defensively another stop and forcing a field goal attempt this was the defense you know whenever you have statistical categories where you rank with triple digits it's no good right and most a lot of their defensive categories were in triple digits one of them being number of 20-yard plus pass plays they gave up last year they gave up 50. that was 113. they gave up one today for a touchdown but other than that they've been fairly solid and he misses in the same spot wow first Miss from 38 this one from 34. and it's still a one score game the good snap it's a good hold it's just not a good kick pulls it outside the right up right or the left up right depending on which way you're looking at it but West Virginia Dodges it again they get the stop they get to miss field goal now you're going to take a knee and go into the locker room down seven on the road and feeling like you're right in this football game thought it wasn't a given that's a haydak was going to be the everyday Place kicker for this team Alex Falcons transferred in from Columbia and there's an expectation I would say that we're going to see him in the second half there's the knee Penn State two impressive offensive drives some UPS some Downs Garrett green has showcased his skill and West Virginia the heavy Underdog on the road here at State College Dodges a couple of key bullets and trails by just seven points let's go down to KT coach how would you characterize the decision-making of Doral tonight really good you know he's managed in the game he's making some big time throws stuffing up in the pocket uh saves some sacks for us as well so I think he's doing some nice things and how much pressure is your defense taking off of him yeah they are there's no doubt about it we got to get off the field a little bit create some three and outs but overall yes coach thanks so much guys Penn State with the lead at halftime it's 14-7 but West Virginia carry keeping this thing competitive 14-7 Nittany Lion lead after two [Music] Nick bulletin brought to you by Genesis Penn State leads 14-7 at the half had a chance for two field goals that were awry the rushing stats was what we were expecting coming in West Virginia 70 yards on the ground trying to control the line of scrimmage Penn State a little more success through the air DeAndre Lambert Smith has been a deep threat three career touchdown catches now 70 plus yards he got the scoring started with that 72-yard bomb from Aller Garrett green assuming that starting quarterback role full time now for West Virginia 67 for the year but he's that running threat as well with 30 on the ground and then a Tyler who's maybe the biggest storyline here in State College 13 of 18 in his first half as the starting quarterback 213 yards and if he can play like that Todd week in week out half in and half out that's why people are so excited about really the potential of this team well he showed everything that people wanted to see out of him and showed great Poise accuracy knowing what to do with the football but you know what I think in the third quarter Penn State needs to count more on the two guys that are back here for this kickoff Nicholas Singleton and catron Allen Singleton had six carries in the first half Allen only had five I think they've got to re-establish that run game here in the third quarter and then when they get West Virginia really crowding the line of scrimmage that'll open up some things down the field again for Drew Allen West Virginia's biggest goal in this game keep it as close as possible for as long as possible this is a rivalry that dates back to 1904 60th meeting Penn State has won 48 of those 60 and they haven't played since 92 West Virginia hasn't won here in State College and even longer than that since 1954 as we get set for the start of this third quarter let's go down to Catherine tappin for more on West Virginia side all right Noah thanks so much I just spoke to Neil Brown and he said he's really happy with his quarterback Garrett Green's play tonight he says listen 107 000 fans they've got one of the better defenses we're going to face all season but I thought we haven't turned the ball over he has point and we're expecting to make some more big plays here in the second half he said defensively we're being really good up front but we have to continue to put pressure on the young experienced quarterback over there he said all the pressure is on Penn State right now we've got nothing to lose we have to keep them in this game until the fourth quarter I think he's exactly right I mean the longer this game goes and it's close the more pressure it puts on Penn State Patron Allen has the football to start this third quarter and kova tracks him down picks up just two opportunistic the defense right now certainly they've been helped with the two missed field goals from sahadak but that was exactly what James Franklin and Manny Diaz and Mike usage offensive coordinator had mentioned Is that West Virginia has nothing to lose and they played like it so far for a second down and eight they've got both backs in there and this is what's so intriguing Singleton and Allen who love blocking for one another Lambert Smith The Man in Motion Aller adart Wallace caught and it'll be third inches beanie Bishop was right there with him every step of the way [Music] third down in this kind of distance I mean you can do just about anything with the backs that you have I mean this is a good run down right now too you don't have to throw on this third down play if you don't want to either team has been all that good on third down so far the split Allen out wide Warren and Johnson the two-tone ends in there Aller quick shot Lambert Smith can't hold it in bad pass that's all it was to it I mean it was a good route by Lambert Smith it was Zero coverage if he catches that he's running to the house and Drew Aller just missed him watch the route quick slant separation no middle safety if he catches that he's off and Drew Aller just made an errant throw he's been accurate all night that was not a good throw on that route and they have to punt the football match Virginia gets a three and out to start the second half and nearly a block as Riley Thompson just gets it off Preston Fox will receive it and he's hit immediately at the 25-yard line nice special teams play down the field as Penn State contains Elliott Washington does a great job to get to The Return Man tomorrow the Premier League is on NBC and peacock has two bidder Rivals clash in London Arsenal Manchester United tomorrow 11 30 a.m Eastern Time NBC and peacock so now West Virginia who easily could have been down 20-7 in this game have been given a gift to start this third quarter they get a three and out not even 90 seconds in and Garrett green who's five of ten on his passing attempts has shown the ability to run it with Donaldson as one of his backs they're going to start with Justin Johnson here but a golden opportunity once again for the road team and a major Underdog we'll get it to the motion man and Cortez Graham will have to break a couple of tackles we'll get shy of the 30 as km King goes down low and puts him down we don't see Abdul Carter missed too many tackles but he missed one in the backfield that time he was coming on a on an inside stunt he was not able to bring him down and that's why it was a positive game flag down the handoff and the bounce out Johnson stays on his feet first down more shoved out of bounds and we'll see what this flag eventually comes to his illegal motion on West Virginia Penn State looked like they kind of stopped like they thought it was going to be a dead ball penalty I have a feeling this one's coming back probably an illegal formation or alignment by West Virginia this coach is a bit confused we're waiting for the rule here from mark klosinski so it is the illegal motion [Applause] let's take a look see he was supposed to be off the ball and he wasn't off the ball before the ball was snapped he moved too late and there was the penalty so it wipes out the big gain on the ground for Johnson don't forget Neil Brown is back to calling plays this year it had been Graham Harold the offensive coordinator who moved on to Purdue this year but Brown who called plays when he was the head coach at Troy LED them to a top 25 ranking in 2016 in doing so in an excellent offense in the process we'll see what he's got cooked up for second and 12. Carter was the motion man green on play action feeling the pressure dump it off incomplete probably for the best as Justin Johnson was contained by Kobe King in Pursuit well we talk about chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac the dunny Dennis Sutton is also an outstanding pass rusher and he forced the Ashton ax in that time green feeling it again gets rid of it and that's going to be well short for trailer Davis Jalen Reed read it like a book and after West Virginia forced the three and out the Penn State Defense responds in a big way well it's Abdul Carter first of all watch Abdul Carter he's going to force the action he's going to be the one that forces the throw comes on a delay Blitz right at the quarterback forces the early throw in the underneath completion and a punt situation now for West Virginia [Music] [Applause] another Fair catcher this one the tough one makes it moving up to Shyla 45. excellent fuel position set up by Abdul Carter in this Penn State Defense medicine a year ago showing out again [Music] the NASCAR Playoffs begin at Darlington tomorrow 6 p.m Eastern on USA that's Journey Brown former running back at Penn State ran for 890 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2019 was forced to medically retire from football in 2020 due to a heart condition then got contacted in 2022 by the track house racing team to try out as a tire changer he had blown it off initially but then tried it out and has fallen in love loves the athletic and and really competitive aspect of NASCAR really cool story for a guy who had NFL scores I'll tell you what I've been to a few races and you get down there in the pits and you see some of those dudes they look like they could strap it up 100 some athletic dudes and I think they get paid pretty well too I mean it's not a bad one if you're not going to play in the NFL and you want to take a couple years before getting a quote unquote real job pretty good way to go about it and you know this that team environment that never goes away absolutely you love it the competitiveness Management in motion on second and seven Singleton the back Singleton scored that second touchdown for the Nittany Lions today this one's going to be an app wrap going right to Liam Clifford for a first down well just like I just like how Drew is seeing the field I mean you know he looked left the start there he came back to the right just looks at very much in control of what he's doing offensively [Music] great mentor and Sean Clifford for the last five years the starter last year as a freshman hour got to learn under his tutelage as he completes another one of Harrison Wallace for a gain of four [Music] when you've got a guy who now is a backup quarterback in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers not just made the team but it's the legitimate number two quarterback on that roster to see how he handles being the guy day to day that's invaluable that was invaluable and I think I think Penn State was really smart and playing Drew Aller as much as they did last year in his many games it wasn't all just buff reps he had some significant reps as well in 10 games three four touchdowns still without an interception [Music] [Applause] handed off for Singleton stays on his feet and Tracked Down by coal bars across of the 30. picks up 25. again Patience by Nicholas Singleton I mean there's nowhere to go inside he's had the vision to bounce it outside [Applause] nice heads up run and seeing what was available for him Wilson on the missed tackle knocking on the door of the Red Zone again and state had those opportunities late in the first half the two missed field goals from sahadac from 38 and 34 yards and you wonder if that changes James Franklin and Mike Pierce thinking here about being aggressive and going for touchdowns Lee coma just plugged up that hole quickly as Singleton had nowhere to run and now second and long this West Virginia Defense again they bent but they haven't really broken all that much and that was the main concern last year that got cast on big pass plays and their run defense was not where it needed to be to be as Elite as they vote well they thought they were going to be better they thought the transfer portal helped them they thought they had better chemistry defensively and I think it showed so far one of course another catch Andrew Wilson lamp was running with him but Wallace beat him on the route again recognizing the off coverage right that's an easy pitch and catch for Drew Allen read the coverage see the off corner and no problem throwing from the right hash to the left sideline when you've got that kind of arm Talent no more Parker Washington no more Mitchell Tinsley the top two receivers from last year not to mention Bretton strains the tight end and we've seen Lambert Smith we've seen Wallace and we've seen Clifford all emerge Smith In Motion play action pass for Ella Lexus [Applause] when we watched practice on Friday this was amazing watching him drop these in the back then so beautiful route watch the patience of Keandre Lambert Smith allowing the underneath Crosser that's a scissor route down by the Red Zone good Patience by Keandre Lambert Smith and then just dropping it in the bucket by Drew Allen we watched him do that all day Friday in their practice beautiful touch to the back of the end zone so it will be Alex Falcons now on to attempt this extra point after it's a hadak missed the two field goals Falcons makes it 21-7 as the first career multi-touchdown game on the receiving end for Keandre Lambert Smith picked up right where he left off from the Rose Bowl in January number one guy well after losing Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley to the NFL Penn State was looking for their number one receiver and KT I think they may have found him yeah James Franklin was expecting Lambert Smith to be his top receiver and the junior whiteout told me this week he doesn't feel any pressure with that it actually boosts his confidence and he's prepared to be that guy Franklin has taught Smith to take it one play at a time forget about the bad plays continue to play through them and maintain good habits Keandre Lambert Smith also told me guys he came to Penn State because of the electric atmosphere here at Beaver Stadium he is certainly feeding off that tonight yeah he's playing into it and only adding to what the fans came here to see his last two games the Rose Bowl 124 yards that was a career high with a receiving touchdown of 88 tonight 123 yards and two touchdowns through the air so now how does West Virginia come out and how can they respond we know that the ground game is what they want to go with but down 14 points Garrett green has shown some ability through the air what are you looking for out of a Young quarterback and out of Neil Brown calling the police well then got to get some chunk plays with their their passing game I mean only 68 yards passing for Garrett green and they're they're finding themselves falling a little bit further behind in this game and again you know they brought the receiver over from North Carolina State Devin Carter he has one big catch in the game they've got to find a way to get him involved more in this offense take a little pressure off of Donaldson throwing the football is the way to do that has played a lot today and he's in motion once again rolling out fox has the catch and slips down for a game of seven throwing on early Downs is really the best plan against this Penn State Defense because of their pressure because of the way they Crank It Up on third down when you throw on those run Downs you got a better opportunity there is Devin Carter on the screen but a little bit behind him it didn't allow for his blocking to really develop and Johnny Dixon saw it from the start there's not a lot of room to begin with on that play because you're throwing it into the boundary and then when it's a little bit off in terms of accuracy and receiver has to reach behind him and you really have nowhere to go Curtis Jacobs they were there to Snuff that play out third down right here for West Virginia Noah they they can't afford to go three and out right now their defense needs to be on the sideline for a little bit longer time Engineers did convert on their first throw down they have missed out on their last six this one's third and three Donaldson he's got it first down Kalin King stopped some of his tracks well you mentioned that they did not convert in their last six but most of those were 10 yards or more this was very manageable down a distance good job blocking by the tight end Trail and Davis number 81 kind of leading that play and Donaldson when he gets those shoulders going north and south and he's a load to bring down again we see a lot of that 12 Personnel the the one running back two tight ends coming out for West Virginia Trail and Davidson Cole Taylor of the two tight ends as Donaldson has another handoff and another chunk gain this time of six as James Reid trips them up but the difference between the two tight ends of Penn State and the two ten ends from West Virginia is one guy at West Virginia is a blocking specialist and the other one is a receiving tight end versus the two guys at Penn State they can do it all and then West Virginia does not put those guys in a lot of different spots the way Penn State does with theirs second and short play action for green escapes On The Run perfectly delivered there's Cole Taylor the receiving tight end just shy of the 40. well we've seen Drew Aller do this roll to his right and throw on the Run feels like he has to leave the pocket because of the pressure from Hakeem Beeman and does a nice job of extending the play and then hitting Taylor on the move [Music] good looking drive right here for West Virginia and exactly it's the first real positive thrive in quite some time for this offense independent state territory at the 41. play action again green feeling the pressure on the roads incomplete Devin Carter had to almost be a defensive back as Johnny Dixon had the right step on that football well he was in perfect position not only does he have eyes on the football right here but he also has a receiver pinned on the sidelines now you can't play cornerback any better than Johnny Dixon did right there and Garrett green is lucky that that didn't end up as an as Franklin couldn't have had a better look at it strive for stride with those guys second and ten handed off Anderson Nowhere to Run Abdul Carter just guides him out of bounds and he'll lose half a yard maybe get back to the line of scrimmage flag is down holding offense number 72 10-yard penalty repeat second down that is Doug Nester the senior from West Virginia right there he's he's holding Abdul Carter who still got free got got involved he's just so active and I think you made the point earlier I thought it was fascinating what Manny D has told him what his Mantra to him is is just play Simple because when you play Simple you do extraordinary things and and he does I mean he will try things because he thinks he can and he makes plays that most people can't make but even when he plays simple he's really good green with another completion this one goes to Jeremiah Aaron and Aaron just picked up a lot of the Yards lost by the penalty stick City that's what it's known as around here in State College that number 11 is a big deal at that linebacker spot we've got Lamar Arrington tomorrow Bowman and Michael Parsons three just incredible players and now Abdul Carter gets to carry on that tradition and all three guys couldn't be happier for it to get the first down showing off the wheels showing off the awareness and green keeps the drive alive and just the niftiness because he's going to elude Abdul Carter who we're just talking about who's kind of the spot number 11's the spy and he runs right by him he's got a great feel for running in the open field and making people miss and Garrett green turns that into a first down they needed 11. he picked up 11. the question is whether or not [Applause] not he actually got to the line again it was a quick move of the sticks but they will double check they'll go back and make sure that this one is correct for West Virginia and a first down [Applause] college that is the Penn State Creamery established in 1865 largest university-run Creamery in the United States and it delivers every time and they have it here at the stadium Allen nice run on first down [Music] got to the outside before Wilson lamp had to grab him by the ankles and it picks up nine [Applause] you had some Creamery ice cream today yeah halftime I went last night and that line that develops out of that place is truly special I saw Mike Rob and Drew Aller did it in their chat before the game so second and short sharp and his decision making so far rolls out of the pocket wide open receiver again this time it's Malik McLean all the way into West Virginia territory well again just the athleticism for a big guy the awareness of the pocket the ability and throw from different arm angles on the move with accuracy it's pretty impressive I mean 19 of 25 now and he's getting close to 300 yards passing with a couple touchdowns no interceptions got lucky on one down in the end zone the first half but but he has been as advertised they'll hand it off here on the first down run and Allen just slingshots forward for nine more Mike Lockhart was the one who delivered the initial hit that actually got him a couple more see the problem with trying to defend Penn State if Drew hour continues to play like this is what do you want to try to take away you want to try to take away the Run game if you can and then if you got a quarterback even though he's young he's making good decisions and throwing with accuracy and extending plays and getting out of the pocket and a problem and that's the problem they're presenting right now for West Virginia Aller pumps fires and the Kent State transfer sets up first and goal Andre Lambert Smith deep and so because of the game he's had they've faked the screen the Clifford they set down to Lambert Smith and then they send cephas right in between the other two receivers and he's wide open Aller now up to 300 yards through the air to go with his two scores looking for more final minute of this third quarter now you got that Powerhouse back here two tight ends Russell running back in the backfield [Applause] beanie Bishop was in the area who dropped the interceptions in the first half and a harmless second and goal upcoming now just a drop pass I mean this was a good throw see if it's just wasn't able to bring it in they showed run with that formation got single coverage on the outside and see if it's just not able to bring in the catch Lambert Smith has both receiving touchdowns tonight he's at the top of your screen right now matched up with Bishop [Applause] the action quick hitter that went a little bit out in front of him 17 seconds left in this third quarter Aller will get another crack at it they had a shot with that play they brought him in motion inside that bait sent him back outside he had a lead blocker out there in front Tyler Warren number 44 is the lead blocker if he catches this clean he probably gets into the corner of the end zone for a touchdown a little high and unable to connect third chance here after the big catch set up by cephas Lambert Smith In Motion handoff Allen can't get away and he is converged behind a lot of scrimmage loses a yard so two pass plays on first and second down and then the Run play on third down will take us to the end of the third quarter well Penn State missed two field goals in the first half we'll see if they change it up here in the second half but they're in control after three 21-7 Penn State in front at home [Music] a look at Sandra sahadak on the sideline who in the first half Miss field goals from 38 and 34 yards out so it leaves the way for Alex felkins the transfer from Colombia who's got a degree in Psychology from the Ivy League school has hit from as long as 53 in his career that was last year at Marist this one a Chip Shot from 25. snap good hold and the kicks is good [Music] [Applause] so haydak has to watch Falcons gets it to go to extend the lead well maybe he gave the hayneck a little therapy on the sideline and took his job and knocked one through so whatever it takes but Penn State does not come away empty this time then the lead to 17. crazy part about all this got the whole fourth quarter here yeah West Virginia's defense has played well overall in this game I know that deraler's numbers are pretty gaudy he's got 300 yards and two touchdowns you still have Singleton and Allen and no doubt Penn State has the more talented roster in this game but West Virginia to their credit has handled the environment their defense has been a lot of men don't break and they still have a lot of time on their hands to work with well they do but the problem is they just have not been able to generate many big plays with their offense not many chunk plays and against the defense like Penn State they're just too good and too talented to just kind of try to chip away and drive the ball 80 yards in 75 yards you got to get some big plays in there and they've not been able to figure that out so far when you're so predicated on the Run I know you mentioned trying to pass a little bit earlier on those first and second down opportunities but can you realistically get this offense going if you're Neil Brown and find a way to make some place throwing the football we talk about a lot of the scars on this defense at each level but Jalen Reed Reese starting safeties is that a nice ball game today he's been very active good job tackling in space they brought him on some pressures he's been good in coverage downfield they're looking for a guy to kind of fill in for jair brown who was their impact safety the last couple years he was drafted in the third round by the 49ers he was a vocal leader and uh so they're really kind of looking for somebody to step up in that safety room and today anyway Jalen Reed has had a nice ball game well you have talked about it we kind of went through this game is often from there and the handoff to Anderson is not going anywhere back to the line of scrimmage before he's dumped by Beeman considering what they lost but Joey Porter Jr and jair brown in that secondary a lot of people would think all right they must be taking a step back in that group but considering what they brought back and now extended up to a starting roll we've seen a lot of it tonight it's still a strength for this team it really is I mean I think with Kalyn King and Johnny Dixon who's not out there right now Camp Miller's out there a young guy they're really high on they're still very strong at the corner position for sure into the air on second and nine over the middle it's Anderson on a quick slant to the 30. so combine that secondary success with what they have up front with Isaac who made that tackle shop Robinson on the other end in the middle without doing Carter wearing that number 11 for stick City Kobe King has taken a major step forward Curtis Jacobs already made some big plays today this is a defense with Manny Diaz at the helm that should be as formidable as anybody in the country here they are on Third and five bringing some pressure green escapes has got the angle he's got the first down and more stays on his feet across the 40 and finally wrapped up at the 45. this is a great decision by Garrett green he wanted to throw this ball quickly out to his running back but it was covered and he read it he saw the coverage by Deluca and he decided to keep it and he shows you one of the things he does really well is run with the football he's a great feel for running in the open field and that gain of 15 on the ground was the longest rushing play of the day for West Virginia they get Donaldson they're all everything back back in there and he's got the handoff here finds the hole across Midfield and all the way for a first down gains 10. a flag does come in yeah and in the area where you would expect offensive holding behind the offense holding offense number 74. 10-yard penalty with Pete first down it's Wyatt Milam one of those veteran guys the left tackle working against chop Robinson Tom Robinson is so quick off the bone he's quick to the inside and he pulled phylum with that inside move and I just think Milam instinctively reached out and tackled him shop Robinson who's got a lot of experience coming over from Maryland a couple of years ago where he got moved all over and then Penn State supplanted him as a defensive end and they've seen his game grow not just as a pass rusher but you saw it right there in the Run game Donaldson and he just scampers all the way for 17 before Wheatley can catch up West Virginia is not going to go quietly in the night they're going to continue to lean on this offensive line what a block by Zach Frazier the center working on the inside against Zane Durant and a nice read of where the opening was for CJ Donaldson show to bring up second and short after what was a person 20. still needs some chunk plays out of the passing game again Penn State's defense just too solid I think to just methodically try to drive the ball down and score a touchdown Donaldson up to 63 yards on the ground including the only TouchDown for West Virginia today try to get it back to him that is absolutely perfectly played and who else but big 4-4 chop Robinson well you mentioned it I mean you know Tom Robinson now that he is a full-time defensive end is an excellent pass rusher but he has really become a solid Defender against the run and it's his quickness and his toughness that allows him to be a good run Defender some guys in a great path rushes that's all they want to do is get after the quarterback shock Rock top Robinson just wants to make plays we talked to Penn State's left tackle Olu fashion about his battles and practice with shop Robinson he said he and Adisa Isaac the fact that we have both of them he said I don't know if there's any tackles other than us that can figure out how to block him he was excited to watch him do this third and five handoff Donaldson goes down low and gets it to a fourth and about two Kevin Winston with another tackle and now decision time likely another go for an opportunity well you have to I mean there there's no question now here's interesting West Virginia is bringing their backup quarterback on the field right now Nico marchio number eight is on the field he's lined up as a wide receiver right now not sure this is a great time for a trick play but it is fourth down and two and he's on the field and they motion them into the backfield so you've got two quarterbacks in there now green goes out wide marchio gets away not a second time Abdul Carter known as the predator and he found his prey in the backfield [Applause] don't like the call fourth and short you try to do something too tricky and Abdul Carter after a Little Help from Johnny Dixon says not on my watch Penn State turns West Virginia away again [Music] the NFL season kicks off Thursday September 7th when Patrick Mahomes in the world champion Kansas City Chiefs hosts the Lions then the Cowboys take on the Giants and the debut of Sunday Night Football only on NBC and peacock speaking of Cowboys star Micah Parsons Giant star Juan Barkley excellent careers here at Penn State never overlap just missed each other by a year but both in attendance here today see that number 11. the big deal here at Penn State Laurel we saw both saquan and Michael Parsons earlier as well yeah and one of those other 11's Lamar Arrington in the building behind on the national radio broadcast and I went and saw him at halftime he's massive he's huge he is massive that handshake is legit too very much legit so transfers on both sides there's a big story line and really of course now with a transfer portal across college football but we've seen some legitimate production on either side from notable transfers Malik McLean just caught that last touchdown cephas had a big catch earlier in the second half as well yeah I mean it's it's an easy or an easy [Music] easy top two receivers to the NFL so rather than count on developing a young talented freshman or a new recruit you find somebody who's proven on tape who's played at the division one level you bring him in and that's what they did Kareem uncorks incomplete just through the hands of the Freshman Trail in Ray who the coaching staff raved about said he had a highlight catch every day in training camp that was a pretty good throw by Garrett green I mean a little bit outstretched but a catchable ball nonetheless and the thing I like about Garrett green he throws a very catchable bat it is a nice looking tight spiral not overpowering and for the most part pretty accurate you mentioned when he showed up to that camp in Troy as green does complete this one back to Ray and he crosses the 30-yard line to the 32. they said the one thing that stood out he was small but you could tell but it flew off his hand it was a natural throwing of the football well I think both of these guys are natural throwers I mean you know there's a difference you can just tell when a guy's a natural thrower and they're both baseball players Drew Aller was a good baseball player at Medina high school as well Thriller was throwing 80 miles per hour in eighth grade third and three green can he use his legs no last second he finds an open receiver Devin Carter who had initially committed to Penn State after transferring from NC State last second decides to go to Morgantown and picks up the first down well when you've already seen what Garrett green can do as a runner so you have to respect that and he kind of put Keaton Ellis into bind number two figured the quarterback was going to run and when he stepped towards him Garrett green was able to just kind of reload and throw that football to Carter for the first down get Donaldson back in there nothing else West Virginia they know that this is probably the toughest team that's going to be on their schedule they've got Duquesne at home next week in fact they're home for the next three weeks another Dart right back to Carter who's hit immediately but a chunk gain and another first down I mean this is kind of what I thought they needed to try to do earlier in the game now that the game seems to be a little bit more out of hand maybe Penn State's loosening up a little bit but Garrett green taking advantage of it throwing the ball down the middle of the field and and right now if you're Neil Brown are the chances of winning the game not great right with 5 45 you're building for the rest of your season in the next couple weeks and so the more pause can do the better and that one overthrow looking for Cole Taylor the tight end over the middle bar mostly brings up second and ten well West Virginia has got as you mentioned to Duquesne they play Pittsburgh at home a great rivalry game so they're actually playing renewing the Rivalry with both Penn State and Pittsburgh this year or started the Pittsburgh River last year they start off really tough in the Big 12 after that with Texas Tech and TCU so important to get some good stuff on tape here tonight to build on going forward what is expected to be a big year for Neil Brown as the one it with Donaldson and he will pick up five or six to make it a manageable third down but Neil Brown in year number five he's 22-25 overall and Virginia the program is it's been a long time since they've missed bowl games and back-to-back years and if they can't get back to that level it could be the end of the road for Neil Brown in Morgantown yeah and you know I'm a son of a coach I hate to hear that conversation but it's the reality West Virginia fans are great fans and the West Virginia football facility is as good as anywhere but they've got to win he's got to win that's the bottom line green gets away fires on the run and it's going to be a yard shy but now he's getting Devin Carter involved and the other you talk to people around the program and everything else he's doing like with the players and how they're building you know character and academic stuff and you know just community service stuff he's off the charts doing great thing but he still has to win you know and he's not one enough to secure him staying there West Virginia and that's why this season is so critical [Music] [Applause] building and bonding will it showcase it in a big moment Davis Behind Green the push second effort again he didn't have it at first [Applause] football team the way they continue to fight down the stretch [Applause] okay [Applause] Donaldson on the Run Donaldson finds the space and just tripped up Shy of the goal line under four minutes to play West Virginia now going quick trying to get into the end zone for the second time Donaldson had the first touchdown for the Mountaineers in the first half green keeps and he's going to walk in touchdown West Virginia Yeah you mentioned the bootleg earlier we've not seen that bootleg nice fake to Donaldson they fooled the guy who had responsibility for the edge of the defense play fake by Garrett green you got to respect Donaldson and now West Virginia will go for two 31-13 oh and they go in this Kansas City Chiefs sugar huddle quickly to the line Nico marchio is in there number eight the second quarterback fake the handoff to him pitch It Forward Donaldson and he continues to fight to get in that is a Kansas City Chiefs special on full display well remember Neil Brian told us I don't know how good we're gonna be but you know what we're going to be interested this was entertaining shovel pass to Donaldson gets it in for the two point Company lead that Maryland Squad looking to improve to 2-0 and got a Charlotte team that certainly led by bit pogi who Todd I know you've gotten a chance to get to know pretty well they're not going to back down we know that much and they've got some real dudes on defense onside kick here and it popped up into the air oh that was really well done gave themselves a chance West Virginia and the hams team wasn't quite in position out of bounds and we'll go back to Penn State [Music] you have to have a certain number of people on the side of the football but you got the bounce you wanted you just won a chance really a nice great job by the tight end Tyler Warren just knocking it out of bounds did try to catch it did try to be a hero just did his job and knocked it out 333 we got a chance to see the the fast Friday for Penn State as well papula is going to head into the game and replace Terrell or this was something that James Franklin really felt was necessary similar with Aller last year to get pribula some legitimate action this season because you never know if Valor does go down now pergola has some experience you've got to have two guys ready to play it's completely different than it was a year ago with Sean Clifford because he was a veteran guy was starting first year and through Aller you're just trying to get him some reps all right so now Drew Aller this is his first year as a starter but it's still smart to get your back up in there and give him some reps because you know the backup quarterback it's the hardest job that there is in football and you're only one play away from being a starting point so there's two things in particular there and we'll continue this conversation as Penn State leads by 16. West Virginia will take their first time out time now for a look from above brought to you by Walmart plus we'll take a look from above at Drew ours three touchdown passes we've seen him do a little of everything move up into pocket get toward his body tapes the arm angle The Perfect Touch to the back of the end zone and then this one the quick read the quick release he just has looked outstanding in his first starting assignment 21-29 325 yards and three touchdowns not sure he could have had a better opening act as the starting quarterback at Penn State but those 10 games played you can see that the experience certainly settled in for Aller as this one will be a running play to pots and the Minnesota transfer spins forward to the 45 this will be another timeout from West Virginia the other part about the backup quarterback spot is one you don't get a whole lot of reps as is but when you do get reps generally it's not with that top offensive line so your protection maybe isn't quite as good as what the starter is facing you're right but I mean it's still those guys well first of all the backup quarterback is different than an a position because if you're a backup running back or linebacker you're going to get reps right you're going to be on special teams or run down and maybe have 20 plays in a game backup quarterback's only going to come in if the start against her or if he's stinking up the place or a situation like this where it's Mamba but you still have to prepare like you're a starting quarterback for whatever reps you get you've got to make him count and then in today's world of the transfer portal it's just hard to keep very many quarterbacks on your awesome especially highly recruited highly regarded guys guys just don't want to stick around more in a year and a half it seems like if they're not going to play gonna take it up the gun himself and pick up the first down yet the real live experience now the flag does come in and the Richard freshman just showing off that he's got his own wheels [Applause] this Mass Defense number one 15-yard penalty automatic first down yeah it's Lee Koba Lee kovas played a heck of a ball game but he looks tired right now the base Mass wasn't on the ball carrier it was on the guy trying to block him in that killer case druzel [Music] standardly so [Music] stay looking for the finishing touches here after West Virginia got back down the field and converted on a two-point conversion after the touchdown from Derek green great Potts a couple more yards in West Virginia with one time out remaining will take it up here so you know I think James Franklin you know a lot was made that he didn't name officially in the starting quarterback and I don't know if he ever did absolutely did you see the one quote he had because everybody was asking about it he said why is nobody asking me why I haven't named a starting Long Snapper yeah he had some fun with it everybody assumed it was Drew Aller and I think everybody probably knew that believed that he did make it an open competition competition all through spring and fall ow look at the athleticism though for the backup quarterback beanie Bishop will add to his tally with a tackle and West Virginia to take their final timeout of the night in the fourth quarter Drew Haller all smiles after 325 yards in his first start at Penn State [Music] once a big season for Penn State this year James Franklin in year 10 a lot of high expectations and when number two and number three are on the schedule it's easy to look towards those games well and they are important and they got to find a way to beat one of them at least to get to where they want to go but they have got a couple tough games left before they get out of the month of September first road trip to Illinois will not be easy and in Iowa with their great defense comes in here pops looking to find the edge he got to the outside but won't get the first down [Music] Jackson [Applause] saw everything you hope to see out of Drew hour tonight is your starting quarterback but again going on the road to Champaign against a physical team like Illinois a good defensive front that'll be a different Challenge and then even though the Iowa game is here at home and it's a whiteout game officially uh Iowa has been outstanding on defense the last couple years really for a lot of years under Phil Parker their defensive coordinator and they never make things easy over the middle for a first down Mega captain on this offensive side and for Beulah showing off a little bit of that arm accuracy over the middle oh for Beulah was also a highly recruited guy out of a York Pennsylvania played a Central York High School a lot of family members that were athletes and the Collegiate level very talented athletic kid fourth right quarterback coming into High School a four-star recruit his grandfather was an All-American football player at Westchester brother Cade football at Delaware and it off for pops that extra effort but Lance Dixon again with the extra Pursuit now under a minute to play Penn State looking for the final window dressing in their season opener [Music] Eric green officially the full-time starter now for West Virginia who had a solid game overall 15-26 through the year 154 yards also added 62 on the ground in the touchdown at the two-point conversion on that flip Passover to CJ Donaldson second and goal for Beulah looking for the end zone he's in touchdown Penn State first touchdown of the career of Beau prabulla a really Nifty run I mean it was a design quarterback run all the way did a nice job of kind of reading the blocks feeling the blocks starting out to the right Nick cut it back inside and then just used fresh legs to drive it into the end zone a tired West Virginia Defense fresh legs on the new quarterback and he gets the ball into the end zone and Falcons makes it 38-15 [Music] not just getting experience but allowing the kid to throw one on a third down conversion and then perbula getting in with his legs and you can just see the response from his team and that's the camaraderie that you hear about with great teams no doubt James Franklin that's something he's known for as making sure that his guys are close recruiting to his system recruiting guys that make sense for the Penn State brand and we've seen it on full display on both sides of the field that defense looking as impressive as ever Olu fashionu watching on as his backup quarterback extends the lead and this is now 17 straight wins against non-conflict opponents fourth longest streak at least tied for such in all of college football and a really good win in week one for Penn State again against a quality opponent West Virginia was a game opponent tonight and if West Virginia plays this way from here on out they're going to win their share of games here they could have a winning season this year and find their way back into a bowl game if they can stay healthy keeps CJ Donaldson healthy keep Garrett green healthy but this was a good tough win for Penn State it did not come easy they didn't have a big lead early in the game but they hung in there and they eventually imposed their will on the Mountaineers last time the Mountaineers have gone back-to-back Seasons without a bowl game appearance this one will be taken out and down to the 33 by Bishop one final play with one second on the clock last time was 1992 back to back here's a lot of balls also the last time that this rivalry was played yep and it feels like if there was ever a time for Neil Brown to break that streak and at least extend that lack of back-to-back non-post season play years this is a team that's more than capable of doing it we saw the growth of Garrett green today the running attack on full display and a defense that's clearly better than they were last year absolutely I mean I I think they did enough positive things today to go back and watch on film and show your team and say Hey look you know we aren't at Penn State's level right now but we've got a chance to be a much better team than we've been the last couple years so let's let's stick to our process and stick to our plan break the hand off Garrett Green's gonna get some extra yards in the final play of the game slides down across the 40. and that'll do it here in State College the number seven team in the country in year 10 of James Franklin begins with a big win in a renewed rivalry it's Penn State 38-15 [Applause] [Music] this team will be judged for what they do throughout the season but this was an outstanding start and for more on it we go down to KT coach West Virginia did not make things easy on you especially in that first half so what adjustments did you make in the second half to pull out this victory tonight we just were able to get off the field on defense uh special teams I thought were better in the second half we just execute a little bit the quarterback's a really good player he's going to be challenging for a lot of people and your quarterback proved to be a really good player as well uh three touchdowns over 300 yards what did you learn about Drew Aller tonight very similar uh to how he played last year in a limited role you never know when you're the starter but he looked like the same guy consistent poised accurate coach Sarah lofty expectations for this Penn State team this season what kind of momentum does an opening night win like this give you moving forward again we're just happy we're beating West Virginia we'll get prepared for whoever we play next week coach thanks so much thank you Noah all right Catherine and that is the key for James Franklin and this team and we talked about it a little bit but not looking too far ahead just taking it one week at a time one day at a time and boy did they accomplish that tonight tough team to go up against week one first time these two teams played in the 60th meeting overall for short time since 1992 and Penn State gets there 49th win in this matchup in a big way and as you heard Drew Aller outstanding with 325 yards and three touchdowns emerging as that clear leader of that offensive group oh everybody was anxious to see Penn State right I think this fan base was has been electric ever since the end of the Rose Bowl knowing that this is a team that had a chance and last year that the college football playoff has four teams but the road has to go through either beating Ohio State or Michigan something they have not been able to do in either of the last two years but I think their roster even with a new Young quarterback I think their roster matches up with Ohio State's Michigan and I think I think they've got the team they can win one of those games there are certain things they got to do better that they haven't done in those games and those
