#7 Penn State vs. West Virginia: Week One

from Steve Slayton to Pat White to Pat McAfee they love their Mountaineers in Morgantown and in a place known for Yan dogs and pepperoni rolls probably some liquid Refreshments the Mountaineer faithful ready to go here in Morgantown and boy do we have a fun one ahead top 10 team Target on their back going on their Road and right into the snake pit as we see the number seven team in the country the Penn State NY line taking on a team from the Big 12 the West Virginia Mountaineers for EA Sports college football ree Davis with you alongside David Pollock and Jesse Palmer and guys can't wait to get this one started and the Mountaineers will kick it away to start us off here he comes from inside his own five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 so Penn States offense takes the field and all eyes on this man as he takes the field the defense knows they're going to try to throw him the football and it probably won't matter guys oh but the defense Reef will be locked in he will see double coverage they will know where he's at on every single snap Jesse or else you will get beat quick fast and in a hurry he's one of the few receivers in the country guys where his man coverage is open Zone coverage is open if he's double coverage Z throw that guy the ball on second down now will they go back to the ground [Music] game they'll give it to the back maybe picked up a couple he's down at the 24 and that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road didn't take long to need a clutch play on the opening drive it's third and seven back to throw it's Allard fires to the wide out on target over the middle third ripping off a pretty good Chuck of yardage they've got it out to the 41 with a first down well I think on that play you saw why this guy's such a big weapon in this offense that receiver he does such a nice job with his routes he's patient and he's consistent and he's got good hands you don't see him put a lot of balls on the ground nice job there picking up the first down the give to the back able to scr three yards out of that one somehow it's second and seven and it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up with a good spot after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven takes a hand off it's Singleton they wrestle him to the ground but he's got ready for a first down you I'm so impressed watching this guy run the football and I'll tell you I think Joe pno would have loved this guy in his offense too his team's always prided themselves on being able to run the football right be more physical than the opponent this guy has the ability to just wear defenses down so hard to stop hand off to the lone back he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lck he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 he's looking to throw and the pass is incomplete Jarred Loose by the hit third down coming [Applause] the seventh play of this opening drive will be a third and [Applause] long he's looking downfield to throw get it out on the screen nice move to keep running they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some lanes for their running back well they pick up the first down there on the screen I love the offensive line there allowing the pass rush to get way up the field they completely baited their guys made them think that they got beaten that they were going to get the sack and then they sneak the running back SC right in behind them and pick up the FR caught behind the line it's Wallace and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no game land I know a lot of people are going to look at that play and say man that was a bad play didn't get any yards but that could be the off maybe setting something up play caller is going to remember that last play he's going to remember how the defense reacted to it made a quick tackle they might pump that throw and then hit another player vertically down the field for an explosive play down the line just keep that in mind not a whole lot of room as he gets a couple inside the 30 to the 29 it's third [Applause] [Music] down they're about to snap it for the 10th time on this opening drive but they need a conversion to keep the drive alive on third down looking to the big tight end catch in the middle it's warrant and tight coverage right there but he makes the grab and they've got it on the 11 in a Red Zone chance good enough for first down and the nitty lions with the first and 10 dropping back it's Aller and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down you know it's difficult for GBS sometimes when you're throwing to your running backs because they're not receivers you really got to be perfect with the ball plac but you got to make that a catchable throw a little bit too tough for the RB on that one going to work in the Red Zone they can't pick up the first down without getting it into the End Zone on the ground it's Singleton they'll give him four on that one it's third and six he's knocked down at the seven it's third [Applause] down boy they'd love to pick up this conversion and go to work with a first and goal on Third and long tried to convert through the air and he was trying to cash in in the end zone in this Red Zone threat but it's incomplete yeah and third and short that choose not to run throw the football and I think a lot of that has to do they know they're in field goal range they can take the three points on the board and on fourth down they'll try to put three on the board and the holder will spot it on the 14 for a 24 yd attempt it is perfect and the first points of the day come on that field goal I know one thing this head coach does every week is challenges his guys to start fast and it's so important today playing on the road in this kind of environment you saw a nice drive they didn't get the touchdown they would have loved but still kicking that field goal and taking this early lead that's a statement for the visiting [Applause] team after putting up a three spot the kickoff unit set to go KI on the run from inside his own five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 so the West Virginia Mountaineers offense will go to work for the first time today and David we see just how effective they can be on the ground running against a packer like this but they're going to do what they do and they're going to feature their guy he's an elite running back you're a great linebacker let's see who wins this battle there have been entire defenses that haven't been able to slow this running back down this linebacker though he's got the athleticism to do it himself didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they go to the ground running hard and getting six yds out to the 26 just a simple power play power football be strong be big be physical make it a fourth quarter game make him feel you keep him off balance facing a third down and short from the [Applause] 26 they'll try to run for it and the defense had his hands T but they finally wrestle him down short of the first down such a big decision early in the game when you're opening drive third and short you run it you don't pick it up and now you're just inches away from getting it I'm not going to be surprised guys if they decide to run it here again the Mountaineers send out the punt unit they'll have to punt for the first time this [Applause] afternoon running it back it's Saunders that's a perfect example of not settling for a fair catch pick up every yardage you can and help out the offense wide receiver shows motion grabbed behind the line it's fliming and they're able to force him out of bounds after a short pickup I like the decision by the quarterback here just get the ball out of your hands get it to your playmaker a lot of times he'll dance and make even bigger plays than he did here but it was still a positive game now on second down [Applause] looking downfield it's Allard quickly complete he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense well they pick up the first against stillone coverage the biggest key there is the quarterback understanding that a it's Zone but B what kind of zone is it is it one high safety is it two high safeties and then you know instinctively where your best throw where your highest percentage completion is based on what type of Zone coverage it's going to be and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good game before the stop is made well you got to give the defense a lot of credit on this play because they were doing a nice job understanding who had the football and where they were so a nice job by the defense rallying around that ball carrier and now not giving up the first down now on second down and short off the play fake throws for the tight end he makes a catch well that play action fake just throws the defense for a split second that allowed the tight end time to work his route get vertical down the field and pick up a big Gainer for the offense the nney lions are moving quickly down the field they're looking to pass from the Red Zone got it in the middle it's Warren they make the stop but the sweet ruin catch is plenty to give him a first down and man this quarterback is on fire this drive they've run five plays offensively he's thrown it all five times he's five for five and now he has him down here on the goal line why not go six for six with a tutty the nitty Lions have it in scoring position on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the run and the defense makes a tackle but not before he gets down to the two a lot of times def Blitz to stop the run this very play right here putz the linebacker but man the offense did a great job everybody understood what they saw running back understood pick up a nice positive gain and they were trying to get a bull and maybe create a tackle for a loss he'll run it to the right looking for the goal line nowhere to run on that one he loses more on the car now listen the defense won that play as an offense you're the key David you can't go backto back negative play you got to be smart with the football here looks like you're going to have to throw it just can't force it you got to make sure you're playing with that clock in your head you can't take a second and I think this is a situation where I spread you out I get more speed on the field I make the defense pulls it in in the endzone touchdown nitty Lions I tell you what when you give me that kind of effort I'm going to find you more often what a layout QB throws the football a little bit in front of him had to dive and go make the catch he lays out secures the catch through the ground remember got to catch it all the way through the ground nice effort by that receiver [Music] [Applause] there lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they're now up by a touchdown and a field goal at 10 they marched 58 yds for the touchdown on that one and they get it into the end zone with a 6yd touchdown pass the kickoff team out there set to boot it away to kick it away and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work from the shot gun they'll run it tackle is made at the 28 after a pick up of three and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven using the quick game one step WRA twep squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground this quarterback right now is in improve and he's doing a nice job in crease now he's reading the coverage and he's getting an idea of where he wants to go with the football that's why the ball's coming out of his hands so quickly that's why he seems like he's in a great Rhythm right now this is where you make the money on the drive ball at the 30 it's third and short got it in the middle it's Gallagher works his way to the 41 and that is plenty to give him a first down really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done and the MERS will snap it on First and 10 leaves it with the running back we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up and the defense doing a great job committing to the run when you commit to the run like this obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game but you got to stop the run first after picking up a couple at second and eight going to run it it's white not a whole lot of progress made there on the short drive now trying to keep this drive alive on Third and long from the 45 looking to throw it's green unloads to the wide out a strike downfield defense needs to regroup as he gets it down to the 26 and this defense is going to have their hands full because they're going to need to be comfortable with guys one-on-one on islands in the perimeter of the field and they're just going to have to make better plays than what we saw right there they knew this offense was going to try to be aggressive got to need better effort in the back end for this defense moving [Applause] forward single back formation and they give it to it they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well they're trying to get that run play going to the outside but it's the defensive end who does a great job winning his one-on-one and forcing the negative play [Applause] lost yardage on that last one it's second and [Applause] 11 they'll keep it on the ground to the right he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple you know the runner just has to have a little bit more patience he bounced that thing outside a little too early and as a result lost yards this will be the eighth play of the drive but a great opportunity for the defense to get off the field on Third and long he'll have to turn it loose deep it's CAU makes the grab defense right there and they are set up at the 14 that wasn't a touchdown that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression wide receiver coming across in Motion in the red area it's white brought down after a pick up of five yds down to the TCH I know the passing game sells the passing game is exciting but it's not exciting to get five or six yards a pop on the ground but it will be very successful going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down power football with the Run he'll pick up three before he's down at the sixd really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal dropping back it's green fires into the end zone and swatted down by the defense to stop the scoring opportunity got to give the defense credit on that play taking everything away forcing the incompletion now it's decision time fourth and short in your in field goal range what do you do here and here they come going for the first down on Fourth and two they'll try to pick up the first will not get there a fourth down stop first and 10 from inside their own five you got to take care of the ball but there is room to take a shot here they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well there's a statement by the defensive run first down play expecting run and they just dominated up front beat their one-on ones and force a tackle for a didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 from the gun running back on the Move finds a little bit of room as he'll get two out to the six and those physical runs take a toll it might not be a big game now but down the road third fourth quarter late in the ball games they tend to turn into bigger runs as they get set to snap it just about to reach the end of the quarter on third down he drops to throw catch in the middle it's Wallace he wasn't far from taking it to the house and that'll be the final play of the first quarter we've come to the end of the quarter and it's Penn State on top really strong performance so far to be able to build a lead here in the first period as we look at the stats now the challenge here they've taken a punch but they can't let it get out of hand as we start the [Applause] second coming out on first down with the play fake nice defensive way to get a hand in there and knock it away Zone coverage that time in the cornerback a nice job with his eyes he's watching the quarterback he sees the ball thrown so he knows exactly when to break on it he's able to break it up for an incompletion and now on second down for this [Music] offense out of the shotgun they go to the ground they could have used a little bit more there pick up of three it's thir seven the Run game just has not been working for this offense all game long saw it on that last play as well just not getting enough push up front on the offensive line they haven't been physical they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on third down going up top grabbed in the middle it's Saunders and how about that what the doctor always ordered an explosive play to the 40 that is going to drive this defensive coordinator a lot of DCs they focus a ton of energy on how their unit performs on third down and in the Red Zone if this defense gives up a couple more third down conversions like that they are going to be in for a very unpleasant film session on Mond looking to move it through the air grabbed over the middle it's sa you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play our coach said don't never go for taking a problem take what's there take the positive yards and never [Music] complain right on target with that last pass now it's second and medium looking for room it's Singleton they get him down but he does pick up three to the 32 yd line 32 yd line it's third [Applause] down do they have another third down conversion in the bag already two for two on this drive it's third and two they'll try to bully their way for the first working their way closer and closer a third down conversion and they've got it at the 26 and this offense is clicking everything's moving moving and the guy carrying the football I mean he is carrying the rock like this is a guy that's he's setting his tone for this game creating some balance on this offense this offense is going to be a handful yeah David I'd love to sit here and say well the offensive coordinator is just one step ahead of his counterpart across the field that's not it right now his offensive line is establishing the line of scrimmage and you mentioned the back he right now is running with authority on this dve [Music] after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven looking to pass it's Aller and it just squirted through his hands he wanted to take off and got too anxious well they rep this play every day in practice what 50 times simple hitch route quarterback puts it right on and receivers just got to finish the play Let's see what they've dialed up on Third and long from the 22 he'll try to pop the draw they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well the offense trying to catch him off guard a little bit running that draw play but the defense wasn't fol everybody stayed in their Lane and they're able to get the tackle for [Music] loss it's fourth down and they'll try the field goal after making one field goal he'll need a little distance on this one a 4 30 yard try coming he got it and that will extend their lead even further that makes the score hen 13 West Virginia Z after putting three on the board the kickoff unit ready to go fielded In The End Zone it's Fox he's brought down to the 16 would have been much better off to take the touch back West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook that last Drive was promising at times but stalled out and they turned it over on Downs Jesse I think they got to do a better job here just being better early in the down on first down finding positive points yeah and it's frustrating when you move the football and get stopped on the other side of the field and get no points but they've had some success and I like the aggressiveness they just got to cash some of these drives in 6yd pick up on first down leaves him with second and four the give from the gun and he could not get loose on the run you got to have that defense you know you can go in running situations your base defense where you say okay this is where I'm going to start and I'm going to stop the run stuff it up front my guys play Big up front and if I need to add some blitzes to it later on down the road I can a great job in the base defense making a play looking to throw it's green throws to the wide out he's got an open man and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up first wow what a great job by that back finding his open receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third down so much in practice wide receiver now comes in motion they'll run the Jet Sweep making the defense go sideline to sideline they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one listen the offense Stars those plays where they want to get their Playmakers the ball and the defense understands it as well I got to know when that guy comes in motion he's a legit threat they did and you could tell they pulled the trigger and went and made a nice play the Mountaineers moving quickly to the [Applause] line fast motion from the [Applause] offense caught in the back field it's Robinson and they'll shove him out of bound after the short game BS and whistles have got to be going off in his quarterback's head now it's third and long so you know you're expecting pressure you got to know where your hot routes are you got to be able to read the coverage and make sure you get this football out of your hands quickly to not take a sack or Worse turn the football [Applause] over third and long and he'll try to throw for it and he was hit just as he was releasing the pass and it falls to the ground incomplete now oh you know what time it is when the defense gets that stop on third down fist up in the air nice job getting to the quarterback putting some pressure on him hitting him forcing the incompletion fourth down baby fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and the coverage team down there to touch the ball no return on this play and state sends the offense back onto the field so last time David they ate up some clock ran a bunch of plays but settled for the field goal yeah but they're still up Reese and I like where I'm at if I'm on offense right now my job is to get another long drive together four clock get it up score just got to do better in the Red Zone this time around when they get down close to the goal line you need better execution to put a touchdown on the board here got eight on first down now looking at a second and two to the air it's Aller throws to the tight end a beautifully placed ball to the outside and the tow drag for the big pick up hey we're getting close to halftime and it looks as if the big fell wants to be all over the highlights goodness gracious he he is open when he leaves the Huddle apparently he open a ton of catches already early in this ball game they are featuring him and finding him he's got it on the right still running at the 40 hit the afterburners kick and he'll ramble to the 34 before he's finally knocked down how nice is it as a quarterback when you don't have to throw post routs to get great stats no I can just throw it quickly to one of the fastest players in the entire nation and let him burn this defense the nitty Lions have it with a first and 10 [Applause] he wants to throw fires to the wide out caught over the middle it's flimy gets it inside the five down to the four and it'll be first and goal nice play design on that one you make it easy for your quarterback too because it's easy to see what's happening right in front of you over the middle of the field you can see where Defenders are dropping you can see where the soft spots are in zone C coverage and just a really nice job by the QB locating his guide making an accurate throw fires into the end zone and he's got it touchdown pen state that is so impressive Not only was in a great catch but also he made sure he had one foot in bounds to get the touchdown beautiful job [Music] [Music] he'll try to add another to their lead forra point and the extra point is good and the lead moves to 20 a very efficient five play scoring drive and they cap the drive with a four yd touchdown [Music] pass the kickoff team out there getting set to kickoff and he takes this from inside the five find just enough space to cross the 25 let's mark it at the 27 yd Line West Virginia has it in the offense ready to to go to work looking for space it's fight they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that L and when you play defensive end it's all about getting off the football you can tell gets off the football really fast Gets In The Back Field gets the running back before he knows what hit him what a play by the defensive end didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and [Applause] 11 hand off from the gun it's hard to run on a defense that comes off the ball like that and runs to the football like that good luck no holes [Applause] anyway and the running game has collapsed so far on this drive and now it's third down looking for a man it's green getting some heat and he can't escape and down he goes you know when you go down Personnel package you got extra DBS in the game so it's harder to throw if you're the quarterback there's just not as many windows they've got more guys in coverage you're expecting to at least have a little bit more time but your offensive line man they just couldn't hold [Applause] up and the Mountaineers decide to punt it away doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt he'll settle for some pretty good field position and make the fair catch at around the 35 the denty Lions going back to work on offense now from the gun running back gets to give not a whole lot of room there three yds maybe second and seven you know I think a big part of this isn't necessarily scoring a touchdown on that plate but you're just trying to get your offensive line in the rhythm of the game let those Big Fellas get lathered up got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven cral and brought down by the defense I think he does a really good job on this second down play of being very decisive getting north south making the play and Now setting up a much better third down that's a play we can continue to run even on third third down right now this defense will try to force a fourth down on Third and short from the 45 and that's incomplete a Defender all over him knocked the ball to the ground fourth down coming up and I like the aggressiveness on Third and short trying to throw the football take advantage of a look that they got they weren't successful and now it's Fourth and short territory who knows what the niy Lions will line up to pun it away they'll look to P him deep a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook they've gotten nothing done so far and they already find themselves in a three-possession hole Jesse yeah and as a head coach you're wondering what didn't I say what didn't I do to get my team ready to go because we look like we're sleep walking at this point nothing went well in the first quarter you just say refresh like let's try to find a way now ship into this lead try to make it somewhat manageable when you get to the half they'll line up for a second down [Applause] play looking for a crease it's white dances away from one a solid pick up there before the defense is able to make the stop I think they called that knowing they weren't going to hit a home run so why would you call it that while you call it so third down becomes an easier down it's not third and long where I have to pass pass the football now all options on the table this defense will try to force a fourth down on Third and short from the 45 and how about that alertness and that swarming D to keep him from getting the first down and sticking to the run I tell you what a lot of teams that are really good are really stubborn and they continue to run the football even with little success so this offense is going to continue to focus on running the football you can tell the Mountaineers line up up to punt it away fourth time tonight we've seen this guy come on to punt it'll go out of bounds and we'll see where they Mark it's going to be right around the 35 and state sends the offense back onto the field on the Move he's drop behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three they're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up on that play there was nowhere for that guy to go not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 motion trying to get the defense to show its hand try to get the edge with a quick touch pass found a little space and he's got four to the 35 Third Down [Music] coming a third third and long coming up here back to pass it's Aller unloads to the wide out he got a hand in there knocks it away incomplete third and long situations are really hard to convert the defense knows it's going to be pass the pass rushers are getting up field you're under pressure you don't have timing and as a result now fourth down and the nitty Lions will call on their punt team this will be the second time they've had to kick it away on the return it's Fox he'll be brought down but there is a flag on the field let's see what that one's about personal foul ring the kicker defense the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty wide out in motion off the play fake on first down to throw wide open downfield this defense giving up ground as he's finally knocked down at the 26 the magic bean is spinning out of control already over 200 yards in the first half yeah they're being aggressive offensively throwing the football trying to take advantage of this defense on the back end they've got their quarterback right now in a group on the ground it's [Applause] [Music] Singleton stuck with a running game on first down now here they come [Music] again on second down he's looking downfield SA safe completion on the screen finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down that is a time on her way to slow down the rush hit him with the screen and a chunk play yeah such a great job cuz you're flying up the field to get to the quarterback cuz everything looks like pass down the field let those guys get up the field throw right behind him he does a little bit of the rest making some moves getting up field making the big play snagged in the middle it's Warren they go up top to get it down to the 5 yd line as they try to pay off this drive a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do back to pass it's Allard a little screen to the running back no sir not this time the defense was there and ready for that one now on offense you're trying to get your running back involved here in the passing game and obviously no success on that play defense seemed like they were aware of it and all of a sudden youve set yourself up in a tough position here on third offense calls a timeout here critically important to make sure they have the right play called and everyone on the same page here that last play not what they had in mind and they've got a long way to go to get it close to the goal line to pick up a first down setting up the screen and and he cruises his way to the house touchdown niy Lions number 10 with the grab and the score [Music] [Applause] he'll try to tack on one more on for the extra point and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead they marched the ball 51 yds for the score and they C things off with a 9yd touchdown pass Z the kickoff unit about to go to work set to kick this one away on the move from inside is five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 West Virginia has it the offense ready to go to work so late in the half this is really an opportunity David maybe to swing the momentum in their favor dang right there's no time to be concerned we're a little bit down listen I just think this is a point with the offense that they can prove like we're here we're going to create something now that we can build on in the second half coach said all week he wanted to be aggressive this is a great opportunity to show that right now at the end of the first half try and generate some momentum score some points before going into halftime back to throw it's green fires to the wide out right through his hand you just have to make that catch and it'll be third down you know sometimes wide receivers are so eager to get up field once they have the ball they take their eyes away you really got to do a good job looking it in and securing the catch they're about to wear this punter out he's already been out four times staring at a fifth if they can't move the chains using his legs it's white they stop him after a short game probably just wanted to mitigate the losses with fourth down coming the defense calls a timeout they second of the day as they try to get their act together and the Mountaineers will will bring the punt team onto the field he's going to try to flip the field with this one bringing it back it's Anders they'll put a stop to that return at about the 37 yd line the Dy lons going back to work on offense now in modern college football Jesse if there's time there's an opportunity to attack and I like them being aggressive here too guys look they they practiced this all week long now you're in that situation to go out there have some fun and let it fly and defenses are taught to stay deep play prevent these situations so I think you could get a good chunk play and then possibly get a field goal to tack on before the half now from the 48 yd line it's first and 10 he's looking to throw it good quickness to grab it off the deflection the offense burned just third and final timeout of the half how about that heads up play you're coming out of the back field and all of a sudden the ball in your red B yeah how about that just seeing the ball tipped up deflected in the air the running back's like all right I I'll take it I'll make the catch that goes down the step hook as a catch good job to avoid the negative play and just get rid of that thing [Music] [Applause] [Music] third went up top on second down that leaves him needing a yard here on third down they'll try to get the first through the air fires to the big fella that'll be enough for the first down as they mark it down at the 31 yd line shotgun fundamentals are so key he was like a short stop caught the shotgun snap and right away rifled it out of his hands like he was turning two that was beautiful first half in the book time now to join Kevin Connors in our halftime update gentlemen what a pleasure it's been to watch these two teams thus far they're in Morgantown and we've got to start our halftime breakdown with this super star running back his elusiveness his raw power this young man is the total package and his ability to catch the ball out of the back field is a differentiator a lot of guys can hit the hole this K can hit the hole and hit the home run in the passing game with that said let's send it back to the guys at Mount near [Music] field the nney Lions will boot it away to start the second half he'll take the return try to get better field position really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook to the air it's green throws to the wide out got him downfield and he'll have enough for the first down at the 42 and I love you understand when I'm supposed to put some RPS on that football you could tell he's thrown over the middle of the field he knows he's got Defenders there I got to throw this thing in there quick fast in a hurry nice job by the quarterback open the drive with a chunk play out past the 40 and they are in business on first down unloads to the wide out calls it in and perhaps a touchdown saving tackle as they gets him down at the 37 and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down looking for space it's white tackle is made at the 27 let's give him 10 yds on the play and it is enough for a first down well you wonder if one of the adjustments they made at halftime trailing in this game was to try and get the ground game established David they're off to a good start here dang right stay patient you don't have to worry about it you don't have to press just try to get scoring drives together don't abandon the Run they're getting this guy lathered up I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it didn't get much on first down it's second and nine off play action nowhere close on that one as he got thrilled trying to deliver the football and now they face third down that's another example of just really good football this is why they built the lead here in the second half nice job pressuring the quarterback making him feel uncomfortable coming into somebody else's building and keeping it really really quiet it's a draw and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down it's 23 yd line fourth down coming up so they'll send out the field goal unit the holder is going to line it up right at the 30 this will be a 40y field goal attempt and it's right down the [Applause] boulevard that makes 27 West Virginia [Music] [Applause] after that last field goal Drive they're set to kick it away on theb he'll bring it back from inside his SP nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 men State sends the offense back onto the field wide receiver shows motion here comes the speed on the Jet Sweep at the 35 he's loose gets it to the 42 yd line and that's a first down defenses have got to play with great eye discipline especially when you're facing teams that will run the Jet Sweep you've got to be able to the football extremely quickly and defense did not do a good job of it that time perfect play call for that big gain to open the drive now here they come on First and 10 they'll run it from the gun at the 45 on his way and there they go again another huge gain on the ground yeah this offense has had their way with this defense and they've had a lot of success and I tell you what if this defense wants any chance of coming back they better get physical and stop the run because right now this offense is having their way this offense always looking for those big explosive plays and now they've got it just inside the 30 it's a draw not much working there it'll be second and nine [Music] got a little work done on first down now back to the line after run run run now throw Can't Hang On In The End Zone and that one is going to drive him crazy when he watches it it'll be third down sometimes as a quarterback when you're feel feeling your Rhythm and you're feeling yourself you just want to keep taking shots right this guy's already thrown three touchdown passes he saw a look he lik decided to Let Her Fly haven't seen a lot of balls fall in complete especially deep down the field that one did but I'd expect this guy to keep letting it go catch in the middle it's Warren put it right on him sweet plate good pick up and they'll move the chains with the first down it's all about critical downs and distances on defense you want to be great defensively you've got to be good on third down and in the red zone for this defense giving up a third down like that that is just a gut touch the nitty Lions will snap it on First and 10 he's going to pass he's got it and still on his feet that completion will take it inside the Flo and the offense is threatening these wide receivers work in middle of the field so much of this is fi understanding where the holes are in the zone or understanding how to get leverage on a man and these wide receivers are dangerous nowadays because they do it so fast and see that so quick and make those plays over the middle from the gun the running back has it they make the tackle just outside the end zone but it'll be first and goal from the one I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of touchdown pen State and the Ping has started well well well somebody's been doing their box jumps you ain't lying getting up in the air Hey listen I'm taking a picture of that saving it that might be my screen saver on my phone that vertical way up in the air [Music] [Applause] lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they pushed the lead out a little further they marched 79 yds on the drive and they capped it off with a one yd Pune lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown Drive set to kick this one away the returner will field it and try to set up his offense in great field position he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 first 10 on the run it's white they stop him after a sixy run out to the 24 coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chain when you could run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that got six on first down now a lot of options on second and [Applause] four to the air it's green pocket starts to collapse and the pressure was too much they get him at the 15 and this offensive Line's got to do a better job man youve got to protect your quarterback listen this offense is not playing great but they got to somehow find a way to start to get something together here in this second [Applause] half you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 looking to throw and he needs a bunch fights off a Defender he'll pull it down and run on the move at the 30 and he's finally down sliding in safely after the huge pickup this guy just giv you that he's just got so much electricity he just pulls it down and chews up yards like it's nothing that's a quarterback a quarterback doing that to your defense what an impact from that last explosive play they were pinned down in their own territory now first and 10 from their own 45 really nice stop there from this senior leader man that D tackle as a freak athlete did you see him come out of the stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness didn't get much on first down it's second and [Applause] nine he's looking to throw C in the back field it's Taylor and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short gain that's really nice catch by the big tight end throwing those Ms up there catching the [Music] football third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off scanning the field it's green fires to the wide out couldn't quite haul it in they almost had their first pick here late in the game wow that quarterback is lucky there if you're going to take a chance like that on third down in your end of the field you better be right because that should have been picked and returned for a touchdown this offense is lucky now they're getting a chance to punt this ball away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work the NY Lions going back to work on offense now if you like oldfashioned grinded up run over him football that last touchdown Drive was for you Jesse that was impressive man great blocking up andal running and now you wonder how the defense responds like are they going to get way more aggressive just try to stop the run I got to do something to break the rhythm of that running game let's see what they've got on second [Music] down the give out of the gun that keeps the running game charning pick up of five to the 23 well this offense came into the game knowing they wanted to be physical they wanted to establish the line of scrimmage and they're running downhill right at this defense and they're turning out positive yardage early after the strong run on second down third down coming do they do it again from the gun wants to pass got it in the middle it's Wallace and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down defenses throughout the week every third down situation you got to be ready for what they do how they do it and then be able to adjust great job by the offense so far having success the nitty lions come to the line with a new set of downs running back searching for a hole really nice run there good solid pickup and they'll move the sticks with a first down I think a big key in this team's success today has been their ability to run the football they've been able to just hand off and go churn out yards they've had this defense on their heels all game long it's given them a big cushion in this game so far let's see if they can keep it up motion from the [Applause] offense got it behind the line it's Wallace and the defense coming with bad intentions they knock him down for a b great recognition by the defense on that pass play they knew exactly who the quarterback was going to and they got there [Music] quick after losing a couple on that last play here second and 12 back to throw it's Allard and he drops it just a little too slippery in the hands third you got to put that one on the receiver that's just a flat out drop that's a good throw by the quarterback that's a catch that receiver needs to make they'll come to the line at the 42 facing a third and long from the gun wants to pass all kinds of room to throw that one in there and he was looseing in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one first for the off all the way down at the 33 ydd line it's first and 10 they keep attacking through the air got it in the middle it's Saunders good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch it's hard for an offense to win when you get in predictable situations what a great job understanding where the first down marker is I got to get a big game got to get that first down nice job great nose for the first down just outside the Red Zone first and 10 from the 21 to the ground with the back no where to run on that when he loses four on the carry sometimes for the defense it just takes one play right to create some momentum obviously this guy's been eating him up he's got over a 100 yards rushing on to David finally David they H something positive here in the Run game defensively but you kind of know that coming in he's going to get his such a great back and he's had a great day need to put more plays together like that right there they'll go right back to him they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and the defense is going to have to have more plays like this he has had a ball game so far running wild all day long defense finally comes up with the stop maybe get a little momentum here over a 100 yards already in this game so if I'm on defense here I'm adding more guys to the Box anticipating that they're going to continue to give this guy touches today on Third and long doesn't need to take the check down touchdown nitty Lions and the Stomping has commenced number and this receiver is on fire he's got all the skills that you look for and a big time Target and that's already his second touchdown of the [Music] game and wait just a second the officials going to take a second look at this one and the play will stand after the replay booth just does a little double checking to make sure and with that extra point the lead remains in the gargantuan category they go 83 yds on the drive and they finish the deal with a 26 yd touchdown pass kickoff team lining up to send this one away kick it and he hauls it in and everybody's on the edge of their seats he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 West Virginia has it the offense ready to go to work they'll try the right side crosses the 30 he's got a leg he's Off to the Races the 30 a giant chunk of yardage picked up there and they're down the 24 every time he touches the ball can feel the excitement from this home crowd cuz Palmer He Can Go the Distance with that game breaking speed you're right David he's a special talent I'll tell you these fans they come here to see this guy play cuz he has gamebreaking speed stuff you can't coach you saw it on that [Applause] play barely time to catch our breath after that one and they've got it first and 10 threatening just outside the Red Zone caught in the back field it's Robinson they pick up half of it it'll be second and five I love offenses and quarterbacks that are willing to take the easy step take those easy throws that are guaranteed to get positive yards yeah I'm going to take big shots down the field too but don't forget it's easier to pick up second and five third and five and it is when we start getting those long yardage situations to throw it's green looking to buy time he breaks a tackle and he scoots his way to the first down and then slides to avoid the hit defense is all about creating negative plays he does a really good job at the quarterback spot of not taking sacks like that's a great job he wants to throw the football the clock goes off he takes off and gets a positive game this offense hasn't found the end zone yet starting to move it's first and 10 they'll try to get it in with the Run he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple don't you love energetic defenses that fly around that make things happen the ones that get in the back field the running back tries to go somewhere where do you want him to go there there is nowhere to go nice job by the defense creating the tackle for a loss on first down defense roll up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming keeping it on the ground with the single back able to pick up a couple before he's knocked down they mark at the T it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful can't get greedy cuz you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you know can win in contested situations here on third down wants to throw for it on Third and goal fires to the end zone and that ball was In Harm's Way and he is lucky to get that one back tell you what I don't know if the offense was expecting man coverage that time third and long in field goal range you're expecting it to be Zone instead they lock them up manto man everybody on an island everybody won they get the incompletion Now setting up fourth they'll try to get something out of this drive and kick the field goal here on fourth down splits the uprights right down the middle I wouldn't say they cut into the deficit they sort of microscopically uh edged off the deficit still a mountain [Music] [Applause] they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it [Applause] away looking for those open spaces and opportunity didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 men State sends the offense back onto the field this has been exactly the way you draw things up David the offense has really been moving the football and it's been great execution they've done exactly what they wanted to do build the lead now Palmer is a different animal now you got to protect it you can tell they were paying attention in practice this week in the film room because they have gone out everybody right now in the same after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 they think they can impose their will here with the run to the right danced his way through traffic pick up of four to the 19 at the 19 yd line it's third [Music] down if they can convert here that type of play can really get give you a shot of momentum looking for a man it's Allard and it's incomplete on third down every defense in the country talks about getting offenses in predictable third and long situations where I can bring on more speedsters and I know the pass is coming so I can have more success the nitty Lions will try to pin them back with the punt this will be the second time they've had to kick it away surprisingly makes a fair catch just outside the 40 yd Line West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook always good to get points on a drive David but Chip Shot field goals can leave you a little empty and I think it's great to get points but the great teams get touchdowns in the red area you got to get out there this time and execute a little better on this drive you're absolutely right David generally the best Red Zone offenses are the ones that run the ball the best so let's see if they can be a little bit more physical on this drive no question they wanted to get the ball to their Playmakers and both receivers have come up big through [Music] three1 I guess if you're an optimist the stage is set for a massive fourth quarter comeback he'll come out throwing on first down catch in the middle it's Taylor and that is good versatility there and a big hit from the backer and pass coverage I just get the feeling this defense is going to make it hard on them right they've got the lead it's late they're going to try to tackle everybody in bounds offense is going to have to really work for this and be smart you got to attack the sidelines you got to throw first downs you got to keep this thing moving vertically down the field caught near the sticks it's Taylor makes the stop at the 23 yd line but it's a pick up of 15 a first down in his offense is smelling the [Applause] enzone the Mountaineers come to the line with a fresh set of downs off the play fake on first down and the quarterback was trying to extend the play and the defense brought it to a close de on the I got to give this defense a lot of credit they were very confident coming into this one even though they were going up against one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country they're confident because they believe in their ability to get to him and they've been able to do that in this game there's another sack here L the first down sack pushes the ball back for this long second [Applause] down trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here able to pick up a couple down to the 27 and a nice second effort by the back to break a tackle but how about those defensive backs willing to come up stick their face in the fan and make a tackle those are the best run defenses too right it's not just D lineman and linebackers getting all the plays but it's DBS that are willing to not just cover but tackle backs in the open field throws to the wide out it's complete gets out of bounds after the big game but they've got it first and goal the offens is struggle they're not going to win this game trust me his coaching staff is still trying to find things to build off of for next week and after an explosive play like that maybe they can generate just a little bit of momentum and gain a little bit of confidence that they can keep coaching up heading into their next [Applause] game keeping it on the ground on first first and goal they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and defense nowadays they don't look at stats of what is a yards per rush they look at how many negative plays they can create cuz why now you look at second down man it just became very predictable for this offense nice job creating the loss on first down defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's got it they'll Mark him down in the two the excellent execution on that throwing catch [Music] and this offense has been unable to find the end zone all day can they do it on Third and goal go straight ahead and he takes it to the house touchdown mountainer sa to the offense could have used a few more plays like that earlier in the game too little too late at least you got something going you got some kind of Rhythm the offense put some points up man if they' have started a little bit better they might have a chance to be a little bit more in this ball game getting seven for the point after for the extra point splits the upright so the touchdown Drive goes 63 yd and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two they're just about ready to kick it away set to kick [Applause] off he'll start the return inside is five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 the NY Lions going back to work on offense now hand off to the lone back he'll be stopped just short of the 20 at the 19 give him one BR [Music] up didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they'll run it to the right side he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down big reason why his team has the lead right now late is because of his performance running the football well over a 100 yards in this game they knew that they were going to have to really put a lot of pressure on him he'd have to shoulder the load and he has delivered for his offense all game long takes a hand off it's Singleton just working and poking and prodding and finding his way up to the 36 it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second now solid pick up of full on first down it's second and [Music] six from on the gun the give looking for room that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there 3 third down coming will they keep it on the ground again here on third down the give to the tail back and he gets it to the 45 y line and that'll be a first down and I don't care if I get it by two by 20 by 30 by 40 I just I just want to get the first down understanding the situation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down Mark and the nitty lions are moving quickly down the field they'll ride the running back and leave it with him still on his feet at the 45 and they explode on that one and they've got it down to the 22 and obviously this offense has had their way getting the huge lead and now when you know it's a running situation later in the ball games you're still getting pounded this defense has to step up at some point and be a lot more physical D coordinators down the road that have to play this offense man they're going to have nightmares because this unit has so much speed and so much skill at running back receiver tight end a quarterback making good decisions it is so tough trying to stop them and prevent explosive plays touchdown pen State and the punishment has been extended P points points and more points this offense has had their way they just keep their foot on the gas keep putting up points keep putting up touchdowns and you know what this is one of those stats days you look back and you're like that guy had 12 touchdowns on the year Well four or five of them might have been in this game P unit on the field on for the extra [Applause] point the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead so a drive there of 82 yds and the scoring play comes on a touchdown pass from 22 yds out the kickoff team on the field as they'll send this one away here he comes from inside his own five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work he'll start this drive firing unloads to the Wi out got his man oh look out there he goes He flip his field in an instant and he's got him set up at the 20 and they took a shot I I like it make the big play once you start getting closer to the goal line you start running out of space Jesse now this big Play Down in the Red Zone in a scoring position yeah and it was a nice job too David of the quarterback letting the coverage dictate where he threw the football that wasn't a force that wasn't a predetermined decision that time he was looking at the safeties he was reading whether it was zone or men he found his matchup and here the they go now they've let the ball down in the Red Zone after that huge play Let's see if they can punctuate it its first and 10 from the 20 from the Red Zone looking for a receiver gets it out quickly stopped after making the catch it's what a modern fullback has to do almost like a tight end to be able to be there and be available for the quarterback in the passing game Jess yeah you got to be able to do a lot of different things Reese no doubt about it it's not just blocking but it's lining up in different spots all over the field as well running routes and then being a viable option for your quarterback looking to throw it's green he looks that one in nicely they get him down but this offense is set up first and goal from the nine just like that a hatrick of completions and they're on the doorstep three plays three beautifully executed plays this offense is in a really good Rhythm this defense better change something quickly cuz this has been way too [Applause] easy they'll keep it on the ground for first and goal they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one while the linebacker showing you read and react he knew exactly where that running play was going and he beat the football to the line of scrimmage and forc the [Applause] tfl defense roll up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming the run up the middle trying to power to the goal line snowed under after a pick up of two they'll parck it at the E brings up third and [Applause] goal third and goal from way back there from the gun wants to pass into the end zone and it's caught Dodge now West Virginia nice pitch nice catch and listen maybe this helps next game right like we're trying to find a rhythm find something that works find somebody to go to and this offense is struggl you're down by a thousand but I like that they continue to fight [Music] [Applause] lining up to add another kicker on for the extra [Applause] point and it's up and good so that scoring Drive took only six plays and they finish things off with an 8- yd toss for the score about to kick it off after punching it in for the touch set to kick this one away the returner will field it and try to do some business didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 and Stage sends the offense back onto the field there wasn't much need to throw it around on that last drive for the touchdown Jesse they got it done running the ball David I don't think you have to overthink this thing if they can't stop running it why would you stop handing it off just keep at it here on this your ey well and if I'm the defense I'm making some changes I'm bringing in more big bodies I'm playing more aggressive towards the line of scrimmage I am not going to let them have that kind of drive again picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down knocked down after picking up five out to the 24 and you know when we talk about great third down defenses it really starts with them getting stops on first and second down you've got to get those stops early in the drives to set up third and long so that's a missed opportunity on that second down by this defense here on third [Applause] down they'll try to pick it up on the ground they'll pick up the first down as he gets it out to the 27 yd line they came into this game today knowing that this guy was going to have to leave his Mark in this one tote in the Rock and he's done that he's come up with some big plays and he continues to do that here late at a juncture where they've got to continue running it if they're going to win the nney Lions will line it up on First and [Applause] 10 they'll go to the ground he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well the defense finally able to make a play getting a tackle for loss they haven't had many of those today because this running back really has answered the Bell they knew coming in they were going to have to give him the football four speed it to him and let him go to work he's done that well over a 100 yards rushing in this game and the defense just has not had the answers consistently for him a run up the middle is stopped for no game and just a great job by the defense being Stout right that's your job be Stout up front stuff in the Run play make them get in more passing situations but do not let them run the football that's 101 stop the run first somebody needs to make a play here it's third and long from the 26 they'll Run play action didn't have much choice just had to throw that one away it'll be fourth down defense has been looking so good on this drive so far they already set up third and long and now they take all the throws away down the field great job in coverage great job reading to QB's eyes so there's nowhere for him to go with it he's got to throw it away the nitty Lions will punt this one away on the return it's Fox returns like chatter while you don't settle for the fair catch if you don't have to picks up just a little bit of yards to help out the O they'll throw it on first down they've avoided the interception all day but they were lucky to get that one back here late it'll be second down it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field and they force an incompletion on the last one second down coming [Applause] up misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air and that's going to be incomplete going for broke on second down but third Down's coming up you know it's one thing to take shots early in the game when the defense may not be expecting it but at this point fourth quarter you're trailing by a lot they know you're going to do it and the defense was expecting that one great job in the back end they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one on Third and long trying to have a big completion here he's missed three in a row now with that last incompletion at this point of the game in the fourth quarter it is going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBS on the field to help them out in coverage down by multiple possessions you can't come up empty on this drive they'll go for it on fourth down fire to the wide out and it's incomplete a missed opportunity offense getting set for first [Music] [Applause] down they'll try to keep this clock moving on the ground and that play just looked to be a mess from the snap and he's right out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage it's going to be tough sledding for the offense here they're trying to ice this game by running the football and leeding the clock they've got a pretty good lead here late game but the defense knows the run's coming right so they're going to be loading the line of scrimmage getting stops like what they just did be interesting to see what the offense does on this next one right back to the well showing off those sweet beat as he gets it to the 45 I I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him honor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effective now facing a third and long [Applause] to the air it's Allard quick strike complete he gets the job done on third down they move the chains it's at the 37 we reached the two-minute warning and this offense is that much closer to salting away a victory they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 [Applause] hands it off and I think they'll give him two on that with second and eight coming up and I'm a fan of this man run the football e the clock we got the lead this offense is put together a nice day man like just balance Rhythm timing play calling everything is worked that's why they built this lead and had a great day today after picking up a couple at second and eight [Applause] give to the back and a good solid pick up for the defense Cuts him down and the defense is still fighting they haven't had the day that they dreamed of you know talking to the coaches coming into the game like they thought they had a good plan they'd be ready to attack and and and limit some of the damage this offense has done they haven't done it today though they got to go back to the drawing board figure some things out cuz this wasn't a great day On The Run it's Singleton fighting off the defender they've got it just outside the Red Zone they'll move the chains it's at the 21 this guy's been special today coming into this one they thought they had an opportunity really to get him
