year coach Smith and his staff do a great job on the defensive side of the ball and excited to see what they can do early on the ball security and the hopefully getting explosive plays and then taking it away and not giving up explosive plays or just being in the Plus on both those is going to be ideal of course you opened up with a team that has had pretty decent success in this conference over the long Hall very successful last year Southern Arkansas talk about the challenge that they bring yeah you know they they'll have a different quarterback but one that does have some game experience um from from the looks of it uh they're they're a big and physical team and and got a lot of really good players uh it'll be it'll be a challenge but it is each week in this and I talk to our guys just about the process and getting in position to play our best football and we're the opponent each day we wake up we got to try to be our best and that's that's easy to say but sometimes it's difficult to do with a whole lot of life going on and you're 18 and you're in college or 20 and there's a lot going on so we're just trying to focus in on one day at a time and and play our best football on Saturday regardless of the opponent how how important is that from your standpoint of the one game at a time philosophy because it's very easy to maybe look past someone or or something like that yeah you know I've never been in a position or thought that it was a good idea to look past anything and this conference will be a great example this year at some point in some time hopefully it's not us but you know if you get to looking past anything you do want to have the end in mind and have some goals but you can't neglect the small Minor Details that get you in position to win each week and these coaches and these players in this league do a tremendous job so if you're not if you're not geared up and ready to go and focused in on the now you're going to be you're going since we did this uh what did you learn year one playing at South Eastern what did you like about it I loved everything I didn't just like anything I loved everything but uh no it was it was a great experience for sure getting my getting my feet under the getting my feet wet in the field and everything it was it wasy given the fact that you went you know elsewhere out of high school and then limited action there how much do you put on you know being able to get on the field and actually play the game I mean it feels good of course feeling valued and all that and I feel like it's just it's an example of your preparation and having such great coaches and teammates and everything out here has just been amazing so yeah I've enjoyed it we had a little bit of a breakout year last year All Conference honors this year though a little bit different at least on the offensive line front what's it looked like for you right now that offensive line how do you feel they're jelling from the running back room perspective uh as a running back room we talked about this every day and we feel like our offensive line even just from Spring to now the steps that they've made is insane like they they've gotten a lot bigger a lot stronger a lot faster coach green did a great job with them and I think they're ready to roll I think they look good so what are some of your individual goals for this season and what are your team goals uh I'll start with Team goals I feel like that's more important for our team but uh team goal we just want to go out there every single game and Give It All We Have I feel like we have the what would I say I feel like we have the explosiveness the talent all around the board to have a great season but it's all about putting it together and I don't want to put like a win number just goal I just want to put uh we go out there every single game and we give it all we have and then for personal goals I mean of course it'd be nice to be a thousand yard rusher and all that but honestly I just want to go out there and enjoy every single moment I have with our team so that that's my personal goal it's just enjoy every second so talk a little bit about campus life right now you still majoring in finance I am so what's the end goal with that uh so I'm taking the banking route so I mean my end goal would be to be like a president of a bank but I don't know we'll see I'm on a credit analy and lender then president track so I don't know we'll see see where it takes you exctly that goes so at this point you've had a year into rant what's been what's been your favorite thing about the area people no doubt the people I mean walking around campus seeing somebody you know every single day like it's it's awesome and then everybody's so friendly it's just it's a great place to be honestly like it really is again talking with the DJ Brown get you out here on our hot seat segment five things you spontaneously react favorite breakfast food uh to today's game here's Rob well you mentioned it youth I mean offensively the first key make that youth an asset not a liability I mean you get these guys have to remember you're young but you're starting for a reason the co the coaches have been watching you since Spring ball there's a reason they picked you to start on this football team go be you and be the guy that won that job of course big thing about that 20 players on the two deep sophomore are younger there are six new starters on the offense including a new QB we'll get to that in a little bit what's your second key defensively it's very simple and the coaches show Coach Bo talked about this no big plays make Southern Arkansas go 10 plus plays without an error this is week one and week one breeds errors so make them go 10 plus plays none of those big chunks and the running back scales is a big play waiting to happen so that's where it starts big play indeed and a year ago he avered 6.4 yards per carry that's a yard better than he did the year PR unbelievable player and it's just one of those things where this defense is going to have to to step up big and we'll get to that when we get to some of the key players dominated this series they have 24 wins against 20 losses they won the last one Southeastern won two in a row going into last year's 34 to9 loss there at rip pal field in Magnolia Arkansas let's go Kennedy along with returning starter from crle Texas in red shirt sophomore Dorian Maple while the left guard Trace Tidwell a senior who saw playing time last year before he went down with injury and Malik kulp the senior transfer in from Northwest Missouri State the Senor Trenton Jones the junior out of Crowley High School down the Fort Worth area the receivers will be led by Caleb Whitley the returning starter who a year ago 34 catches for 437 yards and a touchdown but other than that it's a pretty inexperienced group in the receiving Corp with Kobe Jennings the 6791 PB Jr from quinland Texas he played in 22 did not play a year ago had just two catches for 46 yards in a touchdown but apparently had an outstanding fall Camp to earn the starting position and getting his first start of his career Gabe Corona a 5157 lb sophomore from West mosquite a kid that robbed you and I saw in high school against Sherman in the backfield they are led by DJ Brown the 510 205lb JR out of Leonard Texas and of course a transfer in from Lehi he had an outstanding season a year ago earning All Conference honors and rushing for 671 yards including along of 46 the tight end will be Matt Nunes one of those lone returning starters on this offensive front and then finally the red shirt freshman out of Paris Texas Luke hoen Berger will be getting the start at quarterback the defense for Southern Arkansas they are very experienced UPF front the front seven last year combining for 30 sacks the ins Dawson Scott had nine of those 30 sacks the 64 240lb senior from Maha Texas opposite him at the Jack position is Hunter huitt the middle of that line controlled by Nathan Earl Jr returning starter and Elvin Calhoun also a senior out of Palestine Texas he is as well returning starter the middle of the defense is patrolled by Gavin row returning starter from hotton Louisiana he had 60 tackles a year ago and he's one of your key players yeah guys we're going to start with this red shirt senior he's obviously a leader he feels the stat sheet at every level he had half a sack you talked about the 60 tackles six tackles for loss and an interception this guy affects the game at every level and he'll certainly be a key key cog in that defense joining him in the linebacker cor is Philip Jo a red shirt sophomore and Javon gthr a 510 190lb senior Rover the star linebacker is Braden white a 6' 200lb Jr the corners Melvin Smith Jr a 6' 180lb Senor out of Boer City Louisiana he's actually on the Reese's Senior Bowl watch list to make that Squad and Z Woods opposite he he has four interceptions and nine passes defend it a year ago the safety is jayen blackon taking a look at the offensive front for Southern Arkansas four big returning offensive linemen up front a three-year starter in the 67300 pounder out of League City Texas Colton grer uh grer big kid indeed and opposite he is the right tackle Connor haery at 6426 4 the left guard Benton Castleberry as well as Thomas Bowman a 63 315lb senior from belon he is the Right Guard along with Zack Thompson a 62 310 lb sophomore out of Conroe Texas and all the offensive line averaging out at 64 292 the receivers relatively young Matthew Whitt is the longone returning starter at tight end a 6423 pounder had 26 catches for 400 yards a year ago while the wi out Cole Williams a returning starter he had 30 catches for 276 yards last year as well other than that really inexperienced Rasheen green will be on the outside with Kobe Lockett the slot receiver but in the backfield Jerick scal scales an outstanding performer he is rushed for over 2200 yards in his collegiate career 27 touchdowns and he is a force to be reckoned with yeah guys he's the leading rusher returning from this team he's also the number two receiver from 2023 and the leader only had one more catch than he did we talked about it in the keys he's a big play waiting to happen if you don't at least control this Guy the game could get away from it a guy that's a little bit of an unknown is the red shirt Junior quarterback getting the start Jud Barton Barton for his career he's played the last two seasons and during that time he has complete 50% of his pass attempts 716 yards five touchdowns against two interceptions last year was 20 of 37 in relief for 280 yards a touchdown and a pick taking a look at the defense for Southeastern Oklahoma State this will be their strong front this year up front it looks like this Josh HCK and Caleb Jackson are the ends in the middle we get to the key of the defense and Fred Hardy and Jordan Hood a senior and a sophomore yeah those guys are just going to be huge you've got to try to win the line of scrimmage against this experienced offensive line and those two guys Hardy and Hood coming back from last year are going to be a big part of letting those linebackers run and make plays taking a look at the linebacking core in the middle it is uh anchored by Braden winers the returning starter from barville Oklahoma 54 tackles n and a half of those for a loss last year while the outside backers Jaylen Hughes and Vernon Grant Jr a red shirt freshman from Duncanville getting the start the corners Cole mcnight and returning starter Mikey hook fin who had 66 tackles and two interceptions a year ago while the Rover returning starter senior from Dibble Texas in Ty Williams and the Deep safety Trey Martin who returns after playing seven games a year year ago of course had his Junior season cut short due to injury as there's a look at the stars we do have to touch on the one key player on the offense for South Eastern Rob well guys it it kind of I don't want to say it starts and ends with this guy but you talked about the red shirt for us from quarterback you talked about the young offensive lineman best way to get those guys some confidence early is run the ball so our key player is DJ Brown the leading rusher returning from last season he's going to be a big reason why or why not this offense finds confidence early of course the coin toss it has been had let's go ahead with the coin toss results Rob yeah South Eastern won the toss and chose to defer their option to the second half which has become kind of the default option these days so as a result Southern Arc will get the ball to start this game they'll travel south to North or right to left on your currently 15 eight was serving as the quarterback's coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State interestingly enough that's where his current quarterback came from Northwestern so Southeastern will kick left here's your chance right here on first down expect the expect the run but but be prepared a chance for the defense to make themselves known early course some numbered changes Braden wyers going from the believe he was 25 a year ago wearing number four as here is Barton in the gun receives the snap handoff scales trying to stretch it to the near side and his path is cut off and he is taken down a gain of one on the play to the 26 yd line well right on Q we talked about those big interior linemen in 94 Fred Hardy gets through gets some penetration makes him bounce it a little wider than he wants to and his friends with good Pursuit no gain on first down scales to the left of Barton here on second and nine quick out left side pass caught by Rasheen green and green taken down rudely at the 33 yd line making the open field stop the safety Trey Martin but it's going to set up a third and short quick look out to the outside easy pitch and catch and a missed tackle there from the youngster Cole mcnight he's going to have to going to have to be able to come up and make that play in the open field a year ago Southern Arkansas was 47% on third down they weren't afraid to go for it on fourth down though Barton in the gun here Savage storm defense were able to get teams off the field 61% of the time on fourth down last season Barton receives the snap he'll take it on his own Straight Ahead Falls forward over the 35 has a first down at the 36 needed two finds his way for three and it's a first down for southern Arc well we talked about this big returning offensive line right there they just lined up hat on a hat and got the yards they needed to Burton Now quickly claps and will hand off again this time a run up the middle it's Kayon roach and you know we talked about scales but roach A 61200 pounder he is nothing to to squabble about either last season he had 767 yards rushing behind this offensive line with eight rushing scores Barton receives a snap play action over the middle pass tapped into the air safety wasn't there to pick it off great defense on the part of Cole mcnut well we talked about the Miss tackle or few plays ago that that brought up the third and short right there you saw the reason he's getting this start as a red shirt freshman he reads that play attacks the uh the route and makes a a great deflection there to bring up a little bit third and longer mcnight the red shirt freshman now Flower Mound Marcus here's third down and seven Barton receives a stap between the hashes looks down the right side test mcnight again and this time throws it high and Away incomplete the intended receiver was Rasheen green and green unable to come up with it and now it's four down territory for southern Arc and they'll be forced to pun it away well you know you you would assume that southern Arc doesn't want to attack the experienced Mikey hook fin we saw him attack the youngster three times he had one miss tackle but those two plays back to back right in the pocket of the receiver so fourth down here back to punt Andrew Shriner who for his career 13 punts of 50 or more yards average 36 yards per punt for his career here's an end overend punt takes a new Rider bounce inside the 25 picked up on the Run by Williams and he is hung out at the 27 yd line 1305 to play and that should take us to our first media timeout should being the operative word but it does not so we'll keep it right here all right it's week one for the officials too folks apparently you know what good job by the returner right there that ball bounced way in front of him he he did a good job of getting it and saving a lot of those hidden yards that that our buddy Chad Roland likes to talk about so Savage storm their first offensive position possession of the Year takes place at their own 27 yd line we get to see the red shirt freshman Luke hollenberger hoen bger keeps it on his own and squirts forward for a couple of yards down just short of the 30 yd line we'll call it a gain of three and here comes second down and seven they tried to send Whitley in motion around the back of the formation hopefully get the the defense to shift that way and then bring hen bger back to this weak side it just didn't didn't really materialize inter in look here they have brown and Whitley in the back field to the left of hollenberger snap coming from the right hash as they move left to right hollenberger quick out to Whitley has a Blocker in Brown gets to the 30 and that's all he'll get up end it there great job defensively by Braden Wade the 6-foot Jr well we were talking about in game prep how quick and I mean just straight out fast Caleb Whitley is to bring him down in the open field is is saying something and uh the defender just get a good job of of making that open field tackle otherwise there was a lot of room there only a gain of one means third down and six Savage storm converted 40% of the time on third down last season stap coming from the left hash hurger receives it looks fires deep down the right side has a big Target and it's caught Kobe Jennings the 67 Junior with the grab and into Southern Arc territory all the way down to the 37 yard line well another thing we were talking about in our game prep is the the 6'7 power forward I mean wide receiver out here on this near side and hoen bger makes a good decision throw it up a 50/50 ball to a guy that's 67's not a bad decision 32 yd pickup on third down and six brings up first down and 10 at the mule Rider 37 snap back to hurger give to Brown up the middle and he'll drag a tackler along down to the 34 yd line gain of three on the play nothing wrong there I love the fact that brown didn't he was patient with the run and let his lineman get get a hold of their blocks but at the end of the day put your foot in the ground and get what you can get in three yards we done was something coach adury off a raved about was the off season that Kobe Jennings had of course it's one thing to do it in practice another to do it in a game but the first attempt Jennings way makes a high out real catch second down and seven here Hollenberg in the Brown to his left three receivers out wide left hollenberger receives a snap back to Brown the ground game he'll motor along to the 30 he has stood up there nun trying to give him an extra push they'll Mark him at around the 29 call it a gain of five on the play they'll bring up third and short nice cut in the jump cut in the hole there DJ Brown getting up the field going fast play showed fast and now they'll look quickly to the sideline as the play clock plenty of time only 20 seconds remaining on it as we slide toward the 10-minute Mark South Eastern began this drive six plays ago at their own 27 yd line snap back to henb bger hand off Brown tries to run left side has a little bit of a crease tornado's his way near a first down and he has it down to the 27 yd line Brown's second effort was enough and they'll move the sticks you go back the last few seasons in Southeastern had some bigger backs and we can talk about several of those brown not necessarily what you would consider a power back but you see him in these first three runs finishing those runs well and falling forward I love to see it two receivers left and Jennings all alone to the right TI in stack to the left side as well this time they'll give to Brown he'll or no play action goes deep Jennings Jennings with a highlight real catch touchdown Southeastern Jennings in the back of the end zone they've dialed up 88 twice for 100% completion rate you know what here 67 and he needed all 67 of it right there just a great job adjusting his ball in the air showing the athleticism and the hands to finish that catch in the back of the end zone and finish the first drive of the Season exactly the way you want to Dylan Cox on to kick the all important extra point Cox a year ago was 20 of 23 he's one of one here in 2024 7 nothing State all now division one schools and siderman making the move from tlon to Southern Arc short gain there brings up third down and nine must make the 31 for a first ciderman to pass lost one high two high incomplete their step for step was Keith Wright Jr a 61 202 lb Senor and a transfer in from Wayne State and from just down the road in Long View Texas great coverage from Riot over there on the edge but that ball really about five yds beyond the receiver really didn't have much of a a chance and it's interesting I don't know if they had planned to rotate their quarterbacks like this perhaps Jennings the 66 receiver he's over the middle they go deep down the right side pass is caught inside the 10 and driven out of bounds is Gabe Corona the West mosquite product and inside the Red Zone deep at the five with 14 seconds remaining well I know it says red shirt freshman but this hanenberg kid hen Burger kid backs up he goes to at least his second read maybe his third finds a guy wide open down the sidelines and now 14 seconds you still have a timeout 37 yd pickup here isenberger receives a snap looks right goes Jennings way jump ball and it's he's being held over there but no flag and an incomplete pass but it only Burns off four seconds yeah you're going to have at least one more play here and I you know I I'm not saying this is what he'll call but the ground game's not off the table here if you if you're willing to settle for three and you think that the run will break you've got a timeout to be able to save the field goal opportunity but I suspect they want to take another shot trying to get this one in the end zone should have two plays left to do it hen bger in the gun receives a snap goes right back toward Jennings and that time no flag now a flag comes in and that's pass interference the question is is it in the end zone it was he was about three yards deep in the end zone or at least it should be which would put this first and goal at the two incoe and only two seconds off the clock there so they move it to the two eight seconds and that's the second play in a row they've gotten done in about two or three seconds at this pace they got couple three more plays Left South Eastern has a timeout remaining and Jennings is lined up right side again short side of the field did you go with the corner fate hollenberger receives the snap this time looks left he's in trouble and he fumbles the football and it's going to end with 1 second remaining so don't know what happened there the play broke down pressure off of the right side and now hollenberger really hobbled up as he comes to the near sideline and the half is now over they say or at least it appears that way uh they this side judge do doesn't agree with him I thought he it looked like he was down still a horrible decision and that's the first time we've really seen him look like a red shirt freshman either way let that ball let that ball go get rid of it and let's live to play another down we don't need to try to escape so on the replay it shows his knee was down let's see what the official says here they did put a marker down at the 17 now I assume this wouldn't be a challenge because be an official review it would have to be an official review but one would think and I don't see coach adaberry well he's down there talking to the officials I'm sure he's trying to encourage them to at least look at that now again keep in mind that in this case what you see from our Vantage Point what you see from our broadcast is not what they're looking at they have a different vantage point that they're looking at so they're not seeing the same thing that you guys are seeing at home they're looking at I believe the installed huddle cameras here at the stadium and so I don't know what the clarity of that is I don't know if it will show up as well we saw a couple of these last year uh none initiated all the challenges we saw last year were initiated by coaches and I I believe I don't know of any that were successful I I don't either off top my head so now they take a look at under the intent over in the northwest corner of the end zone well Dylan Cox is down here working uh practicing the uh kicking swing as they say and Coach adury talking to the officials because obviously if his knee is down and let's hope that's the case it would be down back here at about the 18 yd line where they've got the the the bean back so to speak and you would have to get that last time out because the clock would be running if his knee was down as well so he's coach adury good job down here talking to the officials to let him know once you see where his knee was down assumptive selling then we we're going to go ahead and take that last time out and try our field goal here and again remember the view that they're looking at is not the view we look at well they had one second on the clock it was already stopped now it got down to zero and and here's another thing part of the reason it got down to zero is the balls rolling around and bouncing if he's down that would have happened with about 3 seconds left so I would assume they would have some time if if they're able to see a knee down on the play there well you can see from here he's got the iPad and he's trying to zoom in which you know that's that's easy to do with the finger on the iPad so they're trying to take a real hard look at it as the uh referee Michael dras he came out of the tent he Ducks back into the tent as he's having the conversation with Scott Johnson the bag judge let's go back again we we've seen a great first half from the youngster I mean he's really played well right there know the down and distance know the situation if the first throw is not there throw digit lead going into halftime now coach Smiley is wanting an explanation here from referee deras looking to see where they're going to spot the ball cuz they've yet to put the ball down well they had this is the right call uh but again a fortuitous call if it gives you the opportunity to to try this what did he just call oh timeout yeah he called the timeout which is what the delay is here now part of the delay is also well the counseling session for Coach Smiley over there on the far sideline as well so now they have that sorted out and actually they have him down at the 13 so this will be with a lead at halftime over the team pick to finish number three in the preseason standings uh they finished third last year and um pretty good first half didn't know what to expect a lot of young players new players halftime here 24-14 south eastern leading Southern Arkansas first off we'll look at some of the scores from around the Great American Conference and uh we'll do that coming up here weather's been nice let's look at some of the uh scores in the Great American Conference now there's a couple of games that start uh three games started at six three started at seven first of all it's East Central hosting Henderson State and uh that game is 1777 with eight and a half minutes to go in the second quarter Henderson stayed on top plane up in Ada so the reedy's who were picked to finish fourth are leading in that one I think the uh look see the other game that started at six was monel hosting Northwestern and that game is almost halftime a minute 47 to play it's 287 Arkansas monacello so it doesn't matter if you have an X NFL defensive coordinator or not for the range um Jerry Glenville I wonder if he's still there the we'll have to find out when we play the Rangers but it's 28-7 monello leading at halftime looking at the 7:00 games Oklahoma Baptist playing on the road in Russellville taking on Tech 245 to go in the first it's 103 Oklahoma Baptist we'll see them in about 3 weeks and in um Cersei Harding the defending champs are up 14- nothing with 420 to go in the first half and what's the other score I have to pass along oh Southwestern starting the second quarter playing in Arkadelphia against wasd seven to nothing tigers on top of the Bulldog so wasd leading and that's a rundown of the scores in the Great American Conference we'll take a quick timeout game went and it got off pretty to a pretty good start I'm joined by Mike gabard here quickly um let me turn the crowd down with the bands playing uh quick impressions of the first half then we'll look at some of the highlights well the first thing I take away is the big plays by Southern Arkansas a lot of big plays and when you look at the points total right now a lot of those points coming off of big plays you got to find a way defensively right now to kind of wrestle those UPS well we're ahead though well I understand that but still you're looking at 14 points right now off of two really big plays down the field especially running the football when's the last time you watch a college game 14 points at halftime is great defense no it's it's it's been very good defense I'm just saying you take away those big plays and you're looking at a totally different ball game right now the first drive of the night for the Savage storm they went on defense first forced to punt got the ball immediately completed a 32 yd pass as you'll see the replay here let me speed that up a little bit that's a little bit too slow and you can see hoen bger completing the pass to the 67 receiver for the Savage storm I believe that is Kobe Jennings yeah they they call him Groot oh really they call himo I like that I like I like Guardians of the Galaxy uh so that helped set up Southeastern they had another pass which went for a touch down from hoen bger on the same drive and over the top and again a great catch once again by Groot who's also known as Kobe Jennings to put the Savage storm up seven to nothing at that point if you go back and look at that drive it was a 26 yd touchdown pass seven plays 73 yard Savage storm LED seven to nothing but Southern Arkansas didn't waste much time they scored on a short pass complete to uh jaran Lockett to make it 7 to7 with 516 to go in the first period but then the Savage storm came back and scored uh to retake the lead and I don't think they ever Trail this interception uh but I think it was by Mikey hook fin uh helped set up the offense that was back when the sun was and he played that great so right at about the 40 yard line Savage storm got the offense and Owen berer the quarterback getting his first start ticket in on the ground here's the replay of the hoen bger touchdown run didn't find anybody open so just takes off and has a wide open middle of the field to get it in the end zone and uh that ended up being a um seveny touchdown run it made it 14 to7 at that point then the Savage storm let's see if I've still got a highlight here Yep this is the uh long pass it when is it this was the funniest play of the first half it's a tip pass and you'll see what happens one was incredible Victor Taylor gets the deflection and that's that's e takes it all the way I think yep just one man to beat he may go let's watch that again Watch the move he makes after the tip so it's unexpected but he gets there's the tip but watch this move boom he's went right around the defensive black Z woods and that led him to the end zone that put South Eastern up 21 to7 the Southern Arkansas mu Rider scored they scored almost immedi imately um that was with 220 to go in the half that put Southeastern up 217 and then um it was Kaden roach she scored on a 5 yard run to make it 2114 but then we had that long delay the replay and everything uh afterwards uh whether his knee went down I could see it on the replay his knee was down and so quarterback hanenberg so the Savage swm got a field goal to wrap up the first half on the final play of the half that was a Dylan Cox 30-yard field goal 2414 Southeastern on top here at intermission and so let's see how much time do we have left in halftime okay we still got 10 minutes to go um overall I thought it was a good half by The Savage storm by the way when who do the Sooners play they play some real Houston yeah terrible I get to go to that game on Saturday oh man taking my daughter she thinks she's a Texas Fan so we're trying to convert her right now wait a minute every team in Texas does that mean she likes she's she's a un University of Texas fan at 7 years old I'm welcome back everyone Paul L field we're again our scorer at the chalk tow nation of Oklahoma halftime show sou Eastern 24 Southern Arkansas 14 the chalk to nation of Oklahoma together we're more Jay Lindley alongside Rob Johnson of course just heard from Bob suin during the halftime report with his look around the GAC as we take a look here at ourselves and let's go ahead and revisit the keys in the first half and your first key revolved around the youthfulness of this team and the fact that there were 20 sophomores listed on the two deep coming into today's game uh the youth movement here appears to be well underway and they do not seem to be frightened of what's ahead of them well yeah these are not uh they're not scared as they say uh we talked that I mean the key was make your youth an asset and you know what we saw that we saw the athleticism we saw the uh the quick decision making we saw some confidence building as as the as the half went on we did see the one hiccup which frankly might be perfect because he played a great first half but the coaches can go see if you do that we're we're in trouble so they not only get to build some confidence but they get to give him a teaching moment and and box checked on that first key I would say of course defensively speaking Southern Arkansas known for their rushing prowess they did Rush for 133 yards but again 50 of those came on that one play from the qu from the Le least expected suspect in the quarterback Jud Barton other than that they've done a relatively solid job of keeping Kaden roach as well as jerck scales and check scales averaging less than three yards a carry this is a guy that's an all GAC performer that rushed for nearly seven yards a carry last year Well we talked about not giving up the big plays you said that like you said there's the one 50 yard run that got them down there close to the end zone they were able to finish that drive off the other scoring Drive was nine plays and 75 yards we said make them go 10 plus plays well give them credit they did it that one time but other than that but for the the big play that got him down to the end zone or in the Red Zone uh this defense has done just what you would uh expect them to do to try to limit those big plays so far just one of them I would say that's probably a check mark as well of course and opposite of that take a look at the offensive line they're only averaging three and a half yards a carry but they've had a couple of big runs hoen bger with the 14 yd run on Third and 12 of course DJ Brown otherwise uh known as Damen J brown with an 18 yd rush in that first half he had a net of 58 yards to lead the team in rushing the ground game looks pretty solid to this point against a very veteran defensive line well bottom line you know DJ Brown Daman J excuse me uh 14 carries for 59 yards at the end of the day he's four 4.1 yards a carry there's nothing wrong with that 14 carries in that first half and then there were 10 more from other people including hoen Burger so lots of commitment to the running game and uh certainly enough production to say that it's been been uh worth staying with of course a brown the a subject of our player profile as he is certainly picked up where he left off a year ago and it is Southeastern in front here at the halftime break 24-4 and of course can't help but look ahead a little bit next week South Eastern Oklahoma State uh will be on the road it'll be the road show radio broadcast only as we will be headed into ready territory we'll be in Arkadelphia on the road at Henderson State pregame coverage will begin at 6:00 next Saturday evening with the pregame coverage beginning at 5:30 as South Eastern takes on the radies of Henderson State you look at this year's schedule for South Eastern and they're are four in the GAC there are four really long road trips South Eastern can have well guess what the GAC did get them all we yeah was not the best hand at Texas hold him this year as uh this year Southeastern Oklahoma State the first long road trip comes on September 28th it's the road trip to North Western Oklahoma State to take on the Rangers there in ALA back home for homecoming only to go on the road again to Arkansas monacello to come back and take on Southern n and then you know why not let's just schedule a road trip to Weatherford followed up by a road trip to the defending champs on a short week and play on a Thursday night Halloween there against Harding so that gives you a look at what is ahead but here in this game there's 30 more minutes to play and toss deferred your option so you could have the ball in the second half this is the way you drew it up now it's time to come out here offensively and send a message that this is uh this is going to stop we're going to continue to play as well as we have been so far if you're Southern Arc you're telling your kids look we got hit in the mouth come out and show them who you are and uh we'll see who's whose message got through the best so here to start this second H half your US Cellular kickoff will be a north to south kick from sophomore J Todd Baker [Music] Baker lining up the troops Dawning the road white jerseys with the royal blue pants course identical team colors for these two as this one filled it by Williams at the one out over the 10 15 20 and is ahead there still kind of kept his footing ahead they'll have him at the 25 yd line South Eastern will begin their first drive of the second half there with a 10-point Advantage nothing wrong with that just a good job getting up the field secure return take care of the football that's another thing we haven't really touched on uh turnover battle one to nothing in favor of South Eastern in that first half want to see that continue uh turnovers would be the one thing that could turn this thing the other direction so continue with the uh ball security keep doing what you're doing so first down and 10 from their own 25 this drive beginning with the snap coming from the right hash a new quarterback in touch on that in a moment handoff right side run it's DJ Brown and Brown ahead over the 25 down to the 37 and scoping out to see where Luke hollenberger is it's Sergio Perez who had a terrific High School career at Garland High threw for over 7,000 yards in his high school career and transfer in from South Dakota and henb is right down there on the sideline got helmet in hand so maybe this is just giving the kids some run and here's a dump out right side caught by Nunes Nunes taken down mention the fact he threw for over 7,000 yards in his high school career as a coach adury was talking about both quarterbacks uh in the pregame show confident in both said that uh olenberger brought a little bit different game but Perez could really spin it we've seen a couple of throws here to start this drive that's a nice T spirl absolutely third and five here though want to keep this drive moving right here don't want to come with a quick three and out brown To the Left To Perez snap will come from the left hash receives a snap play action looks toward Whitley and the pass almost caught and out of bounds he was taken out of bounds there by Z Woods The Returning starting Corner that'll bring up a four fourth down so it is the three and out well credit Woods there that's just great coverage he does a good job staying in the hit pocket Whitley throws a little high Whitley tried to make a a circus catch but Woods is there to make sure he's not able to come down with it just good defense right there but to your point a quick three and out and now you got to turn around give the ball to this Southern Arkansas offense and we'll see what adjustments coach Smiley made it half time and here is a high boot from n he filled up by scales he is taken down in the open field Prince D on the stop great coverage good secure tackle but credit n with the punt there got some good hang time to allow those coverage units to get down the field and be in good position to keep scales from getting uh getting any return yardage there now defensively you come out try to keep control of the line of scrimmage just like quick three it out got to see the first action this season of Sergio Perez got a follow up on hoen bger here in just a second after this play too and here's a quick out left side and it appears to be a live ball it's picked up on the Bounce by scales and it looked to me as though it was a forward pass but they'll say it was a lateral and it bounced right back up to to his lap for a 12 yd gain wow sent back to Barton another pass out to the left side this one hauled in by Cole Williams Williams taken down down after a short gain of four to the 44 yd line great job by hook fin over there they had two blockers and there was going to be some room for that play hook fin does a good job getting off the block and making a good secure tackle after a four- yd game they'll hand off here scales coming to the near side and this time taken down by Hardy right at the line of scrimmage and we talked about the importance of Hardy in this game and he has been pretty solid so far and you know what you see a lot of rotation in that front too here come Hardy and and uh his mate there coming off to the sidelines getting some fresh legs in there trying to get a little bit more pass rush on this third and long so third down and six three receivers left to the right Barton quickly to pass near side and he'll slip past the Freshman up the right sideline with the catch is Rasheen green and Cole mcnight coming up a little bit hand cered there it looks looks like he's got a cramp perhaps but uh coming right out of halftime you would have expected him to get some some uh some hydration at halftime but Bo just a m tackle right there they had the defense they wanted they had the uh the play covered if he's able to come up and make that open field tackle it's by no means an easy play but if he's able to come up and make that play uh you're looking at a fourth down so an 18 yd gain there and at the 38 yd line inside Southeastern territory are the mule Riders Barton in the gun South Eastern leading by 10 this is Southern orc's first possession of the second half Barton will hand off the scales running short side of the field he is wrapped up there and driven out of bounds by winners Tak it out at the believe the 36 yd line yeah just a great job right there keeping the edge keeping the outside shoulder free over here on the edge not letting scales get around to the sideline and just stringing it out and making a good solid play second down and eight here Barton in the gun du Riders looking to make it a one-score game Barton will take it on his own and he'll break a tackle and then is crunched into the turf at the 28 as witer slams the turf he knew he missed that tackle would have been a two- yd gain instead it's a 10 yard gain and a first down and that's another one of those uh called quarterback draws that we saw the 50- yard run on earlier officially an eight-yard pickup Barton will hand off the scales right up the gut and he'll slip past the tackle to the five to the end zone first big run by scales it's a 28 yd rushing score and all of a sudden it's a four-point game well like we said you can't uh go into the locker room feeling too good about yourself you got to come come out here a quick three and out from your offense and now a long drive here from Southern Arkansas to get back within one score so just like that southern Arc was mentioned uh some high expectations for the mule Riders this year went 10 and two a year ago snap is back hold is down kick on the way and that one is no good so it's a four-point game 24 to 20 with year ago and they're within four here on the road against South Eastern as Williams back there directing traffic and they're going to kick it short and calling for the fair catch is nun he'll catch it safely your US Cellular pooch kick the first of those we've seen this season and South Eastern will take over with 11 minutes to play here in the third at their own 38 we talked about southern AR a little bit in the first but had the top offense in the league coming back they were top in the League last year not Harding that's interesting Harding of course to the defending national champs they took just two regular season losses yet finished up second in the conference they lost to ranked was into obviously ranked Harding went and won their bowl game and went 10 and two here's a handoff and stood up there at the line well so far Jason sorry n so far this running game hasn't been able to get back on track in this second half you see Sergio Perez in there I've noticed earlier uh Owen Burger's over here on the sidelines got his pads and helmet with him but limping pretty good on that right foot so I wonder if we may not continue to see Perez through the rest of this one on the goo in the back field here who's listed fourth on the depth chart he'll take the hand off here he's right up the middle and then taken down at the 44 yd line so it's going to be third down and five well you you would assume the game plan got to change a little bit with the switch to Perez but you hate to see you hate to see a loss in any kind of uh aggressiveness ASA Robertson the medil native and a transfer from Southern nazarine out for his first action he's in the left slot Perez back to pass goes deep down the right side and that pass just too long and it's incomplete and so the incompletion is going to bring up fourth down and a long for and they'll send out the punt team just after Southern Arkansas put together a quick two and a half minute drive on their first possession of the third well South Eastern found some early confidence for the red shirt freshman quarterback in that first half right here so far coming out in the second half with Sergio Perez not able to find that same level of confidence with two quick three and outs be interesting to see if they don't go to some shorter looks just let him get some completions and and get his head right now here to punt it away and he'll get away a beautiful spiraling punt over the head of scales it then checks up nicely storm with a chance to kill it do they get it at the one there's a discussion about where it was stopped yeah I I I think that's the right call it looked like they stopped it but uh it was right hurt by the way hustling down there to get to it but his body's laying in the end zone when he stops that now I understand it's the ball in college football it's doesn't matter if you're laying in the end zone but it looked like uh All Things Considered I think that's probably the right call defensively you need to come out reset get something started here so nine and a half to play in the third Southern Arc trailed by 10 to enter this half they've already taken six points off of the board as Daniel Ghana missing the extra point attempt on that last scoring [Music] drive it's back out is Jud Barton and Company Nick and bruises piling up too the red shirt fresh Corner over here still working on a hip it looks like roach in motion now the Back Field bubble screen right side blockers in front that quickly dissipates for Rasheen green as Tai Williams coming up to make the stop also in on the tackle for Southeastern was Cameron Fields Southern Arkansas just able to get those quick looks out here to the edge kind of an extension of the running game big gain on first down now fivey pickup Barton receives a snap again this time he'll keep on his own option pitch out right side and it's an illegal Fort pass and then Rasen green is going to be taken out of bounds and there's going to be an unsportsman like conduct on southeastern likely so after after the illegal Fort pass that's going to be a post playay dead ball penalty and so all that's going to result in the first down and they should enforce both of them because one of them's during the play and one of them's post play but still net yardage they're going to be about plus five the bigger issue is the automatic first down with the likely unsportsmanlike it looked like Josh horley just kept going a little bit too far out of bounds so illegal Fort pass is the first call and so the dead ball penalty against burck as we said I mean that's the right call guys I don't like it any more than anybody else does but uh orleck just kind of kept going there and and and drove the ball carrier out of bounds and what's end zone of course problems with the uh mik here spot of the foul but again first down yeah automatic first down when they were facing third and long I mean the end result is a net gain of six but you the the scoring drive on that one one play and 82 yards and let's go back to those keys at halftime we checked the Box on no big plays here in the second half it seems feels like it's been chunk play after chunk play and there's the mother of all chunk plays at 82 yards to to give Southern Arkansas a lead here so coach Smiley upset about something yeah he's not and now another timeout taken by Southern Arkansas he is livid about something over there on the far sideline and I'm not sure what it is well I'm going to assume that they had a Personnel issue which caused him to take the time out but then again he's having a pretty animated conversation with the official over there I wonder if he doesn't want to go for two try to make it a seven-point game I mean he was loud enough to pick up on the crowd mik and our crowd mik is situated on the other side of the field so uh whatever he needed to get off his chest he was pretty emphatic about it he was pretty displeased let's put it that way it's the most displeased I think I've ever seen a coach after an 82 yd touchdown reception at least one that benit setting the bar a little High my friend a 82 yd touchdown anyway so I bet Run bottle things up want to make Sergio Perez throw the ball to beat him Sergio's made a couple of decent throw throw has been a couple of drops but he's got to find a spark and some consistency here so you can see the arm strength and the and the armed Talent just not a lot to be found from an accuracy standpoint at least not so far so fourth and 10 and that means Jackson all is back out again now he receives the snap they send pressure off the edge they run into the punter South Eastern maybe build out here is Dawson Scott he just came through and lit in to Jackson n I mean that was just dumb I mean it didn't even look like he was trying to block the punt now if it's running into the punter South Eastern might decline this cuz it won't be enough for a first down and that's a pretty good result from the punt punt right now is situated inside the [Applause] 10 and they wave it off that's going to be a complete opposite he's saying he was blocked into him well that's just not right now that said I think it was just running into the punter even if it is a penalty which won't be enough for a first down that said well I don't agree with that at all coach adbury having a few I'm sure getting an address for a Christmas card I'm sure just a few short words they're saying he was blocked in the back and I don't remember seeing anybody I don't but that's just me but we shall good punt let's go with that great and let's move [Music] on so at the 10 yd line Southern Arc begins with 804 to play and a handoff here to Kaden roach l is a yard and a good job there from Josh horlock coming off the edge making a play in the back Field Southern Arc is content at this point to probably run the ball even if they have to punt it they just want to get about three more minutes off of this clock if they [Music] can Southern Ark now with 220 yards rushing in this game Barton will hand off here to Roach and someone lost a shoe the shoe goes squirting out it's going to be horic as he comes off to try to well you know what he said I'll put it on out here I won't wear one coach I'm still going to play again third and 12 Southern Arkansas back in their own territory the worst thing they can do from their perspective is turn the ball over they're going to stress ball security be tent to run a couple minutes off the clock here even if they end up pting it back to Southeastern uh being smart with the with the football right here remember South Eastern did create a fumble on a two-point conversion earlier in this half as Barton receives a snap here hand off to scales and scales ahead over the 10 picks up some of that yardage and then some going to give them a little more uh room for their punter but again from Southern Arkansas's perspective what that does is get them another 40sec play clock that they can run all the way down and uh here comes the pting unit they're they're content to give this one back again guys this a two-score game so South Eastern now going to be not only looking for a spark offensively but they got to do it quickly got to find some urgency Southeastern will get this ball back with around 550 to play should have solid field position Williams situated near Midfield it was a low snap this one booted away phams Williams fills it at the 44 comes near side Williams trying to make the edge and does but scampers out of bounds they'll say at the 44 yd line that's where South Eastern will take over down by 12 the 543 to go well good field position good opportunity here need to get this ball down there for points start thinking from a clock management perspective you're down 12 points so a field goal really doesn't help you either way you're going to have to put two drives into the end zone to get back in front and uh it's got to start not only here with some well consistency but again some urgency and this isn't high school either there's no District points thing to on the line no as Perez receives the snap he'll fling it out left side toward Whitley and in complete is the call now there you saw the the clock got a little bit quick in Perez's head there were he had a decent pocket and uh threw that ball off his back foot which cost him some accuracy he's got Whitley open over there and that Ball's just wide of the mark certainly had the arm strength to get that ball there and the gun here on second down in 10 from the MU Rider 44 Quick Pass left side caught again by Whitley and this one though caught inbounds and it's right at the first down marker I believe it's going to be a half yard short well we you know what we're climbing on him for a little bit of inaccuracy the last few throws that one you can't throw it any better than that he was covered pretty well so third and extremely short now Perez looks to the will continue to run so you got to get on the ball here going to have to show some urgency we can't wait on extra calls from the sidelines make the call run the play get some yards Perez receives the snap looks right steps up fires pass is caught and ahead at the 20 to the 15 and finally brought down this Corona and credit Corona from for fighting extra yards there he's got South Eastern down into the red zone so here we go you're moving a little bit now Perez finding some accuracy on these last few throws you're in the Red Zone need to finish this thing off and give yourself a chance clock stopped for some reason penalty here holding as the call on southeastern I didn't even see see the flag I still don't oh so they move it back to the 40 yd line some encouraging comments from the Southeastern crowd for This futing Crew if uh Southeastern was knocking on the door and now they're back nearly to where they started in it's first and 20 perezz receives the snap fires out diving grab made by Jenning wow picks up a chunk of that yardage seven yd pickup second down and 13 biggest enemy now though too is the clock yeah again not just uh Effectiveness but you got to be urgent Burns another minute and a half so he wants to get a a a neutral or lost play here and then maybe take the timeout but as a result you're going to get another 30 seconds using the full play clock from Southern Arc as well and are you willing to bet that you get a snoot full of that offensive line that averages out at 292 Barton receives the snap quarterback run right side has the first down taken down short of the 20 so again more time being used here they'll burn the time out and you have to because again with the first down they would have stopped it long enough to move the chains but then it would have started again and without a timeout Southern arc's going to take that thing down to about a minute 35 before they even snap it um no choice but to take the time out there hope you can keep him in Long yardage and force a throw probably going if if you were to get two run plays which you would assume that would be the case right of course keep in mind you do have the two-minute timeout coming too okay Fair Point look at me for getting that so effectively another reason to take the time out there because even if they run the football here you effectively have least going to run 12 seconds off the clock before the two-minute timeout I'm calling it The two-minute warning dang it here in division 2 football and Durant it's called the two-minute warning all right that said you got a third stoppage with that two-minute time out there so good job of clock management with the new rule there by coach adury and a staff but you cannot give up five six seven yards on this play to get the boys over here and implore them to pull the ball out somehow this is all about reminding them of the uh fumble drills that they've been doing since the spring and hoping they can make one work so now we see though the head official begin running toward the replay entt so they may take a look at this I'm I'm behind the formation and and so it's difficult for me to say how far he got I can say this this line judge had a pretty clear vantage point and started running in at the 30 yd line well the until he ended up at about the 30 and A2 the other thing and this is something that I do not know again I go back to the fact of the cameras that they use to determine the replay they not the cameras you see on our broadcast I'm curious how if the cameras are mounted on the home Press Box given that that took place on the farash with a whole scrum of people how definitive the evidence would be to overturn that spot if that makes sense it may it absolutely makes sense now here's going to be my uh my counterargument you know what the AR the angle to see whether or not this spot is correct is not a whole lot different it's in fact it's not as good as the angle that saw hen Burger's knee go down at the end of the first half so there's there's there's the counterargument that I'm trying to find as a Savage storm fan how about that fair enough just a little bit more of a scrum there because there was a whole pile of certainly hard see absolutely and they've already rolled it now a first down as so now Southern Arc all they have to basically do here is come out and take a knee leading 3631 took control in the second half and then afterwards made it close we're going to come up just short here on the first first game of the [Music] season minute 46 to play here expect this ball to stay on the ground obviously Barton receives a snap hand off to scales and he'll plunge ahead pick up a yard yeah not much there but I can I can tell you this when coach ad's over here telling his defense to get the football out during that timeout I'm sure coach Smiley's over there telling his backs I don't need the extra yard right now once you get hit go to the go to the ground I don't need that ball coming out so that conversation was had both ways and at this point there's nothing you can do to stop it frankly I'm not sure if I'm a mule Riders coach why you wouldn't just take a knee so second down and nine here snap back give up the middle and nothing going but no fumble either they will have to take one more snap but this one can be the knee and Southeastern doesn't have a way to stop the clock and again if you take a knee here it's fourth down but South Eastern can't stop the clock and there's going to be about oh there's 17 seconds left after this play so battled back there was just that time period where it was too long and it was too late at that point to to get it back in time to to finish um a lot of adversity I thought they faced it pretty well but like I said in that third quarter they they held on to it and they did a good job well offensively in the first half hen Berger did such a great job showed some great leadership and some real spark even as a red shirt freshman how much does the fact that you didn't have him in the second half change things and maybe cause that momentum shift you're talking about that was you saw how he earned the job of course and then you know you're going into a game and you like a run quarterback and sometimes a running quarterback gets in position and uh I thought Sergio came and ended up doing a good job and we could have done a better job for him from a coaching standpoint to get some momentum going with that in the third quarter but um that's just the nature of the game there's bumps and bruises and the next guy and that's why it's the greatest team sport is everybody's got to stay ready so they don't have to get ready you know what football's hard coach and I I I get that but it it also this is just week one you got to move on to week two you got to go out to Arkadelphia next week talk about uh what you want to see this week as you get ready for that one well we knew it wasn't going to be easy you're talking about a 10- win team that thought they probably should have gotten the playoffs and now we're going to go face a team that did get in the playoffs and um we're not the third made it close late and then ended up losing their season opener on at home to Southern Arkansas again they were picked to finish third in the preseason coaches GAC poll and uh the second storm and then we were talking about Luke hanenberger he scored on a run that put the Savage storm up in the first half you can see the Highlight here his man's covered so he just takes off and runs it in from seven yards out again it was 2414 at halftime Southern Arkansas went right down and scored to make it 2420 Savage storm couldn't get much offense going uh they had to go to their backup quarterback Perez after after um hen bger was injured Sergio Perez a transfer from South Dakota University anyway uh so you got to give credit to Southern Arkansas they took advantage and they built the lead up and then South Eastern scored late let's see what their final score was if I've got an update on that here somewhere uh yeah they scored with uh 314 to go on the in the ball game Ryan hurt took it in from just two yards out that got a little fire into the fans but Southern Arkansas never let the Savage storm have the ball back and you can see the Highlight here is hurt just Powers it into the end zone barely got over but he did and so South Eastern losing by the final of 3631 let's look at some of the stats in the game yeah I mean you look at uh Southern Arkansas uh scales had uh 102 yards rushing two TDS uh they had four rushers in this game two with close to 100 yards Jude uh Barton with 93 and uh passing wise 16 of 22 was was Barton for 208 yards and two touchdowns of course he had that big 82 yard uh touchdown pass there in the fourth quarter uh to get them the I believe that was the go-ahead wasn't it but um receiving wide for Southern Arkansas uh 62 yards for green roach had 79 and when you look at South Eastern I mean uh horenberger did a great job and I felt like DJ or not dj brown but uh uh Sergio Perez did a great job managing the game in the uh third quarter he finished the game though with 10 of 19 for 100 yards if you look at the total yards 460 for Southern Arkansas to 375 and uh they just kind of control the game in the second half with their running game you mentioned they oh was those big plays too they end up 252 yards rushing South Eastern never could really get it going 107 yards they only averaged 2.9 yards per carry in the contest game started at seven so they still have five and a half minutes to go it's 59 nothing Harding at home over Southern azarine defending national champs it's a final in Ada Henderson State South Eastern's opponent next week beat the Tigers 41- 17 and this is a good game in the fourth quarter it's 3131 between Oklahoma Baptist and Arkansas Tech in Russellville and Wasa defeated it's a final
