Stocking Elementary School closing for good, students say goodbye

After 100 years Stocking Elementary School in Grand Rapids is closing for good. Tonight. The community celebrated and looked back at the history of Stocking Elementary during an open house before it closes this week. 39. Your side's Kiara Patterson was there. She joins us with details. Kiara Julie at the open house was bittersweet for members of the Grand Rapids community. As they said, goodbye to the century old Stocking Elementary school and wonder what's it holds for the future. I've been here since preschool all my life. I miss this school so much. It's the final week of school for many students before summer break. But for Stocking Elementary, it's the end of an era. I wanted to stay here for like fifth grade or sixth grade. Move to Harri School, but I mean, I'm not gonna happen with it because they could because Harrison is like a newer school and this is like he's been here for years. Farewell celebrations were in order Tuesday as members of the community gathered to share memories of Stocking Elementary, which turned 100 years old. This year attendees could take self guided tours of the school and fill out surveys to give feedback about the future of the building. The principal of the school says there are a few reasons why the building is closing schools around us that can absorb our students and really give them the opportunity they need for the best education that they can get. Um we are a smaller school. We don't have air conditioning. We've got some building needs that we can just better be served by Sib and Harrison really taking our kids in and embracing them, stocking elementary clothes before once in 2010 and reopened a few years later, one stocking grandparent says she's not on board with the new plan. I'm not happy with it at all. I mean, I was it should be a school. We don't need no more housing, no, whatever they plan to do with it. The school was amazing the whole time that we were here. Tuesday's open house included a performance of the song America, the beautiful which was played during the opening of the building in 1924. The principal of Stocking Elementary says there are different options for what the space will be turned into. There's lots of different plans in the works. Um There's some developers that are coming to come in and look at it and see what we can best utilize this space for. And East Leonard Elementary School also closes this year and we have a similar program tomorrow evening in the newsroom. Kiara Patterson 13 on your side.
