multiplatinum selling country singer Toby Keith has passed away at the age of 62 about 18 months after revealing his battle with stomach cancer Keith's Representatives confirmed that he died peacefully from cancer surrounded by his family on February 5th it is not immediately clear if he was at home or in a hospital at the time of his death Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th surrounded by his family he fought his fight with Grace and courage pleas respect the privacy of his family at this time read a statement on Keith's website his death was also announced on his social media channels Keith is survived by his wife Trisha Lucas their three children and four grandchildren the Oklahoma born singer songwriter enjoyed a career spanning over three decades rising to fame with his self-titled debut album in 1993 which included the chart topping hit should have been a cowboy his subsequent albums such as blue moon pull my chain and un leashed produced hits like Red Solo Cup I want to talk about me and who's that man however it was his 2002 song Courtesy of the Red White and Blue The Angry American released in the wake of the 911 attacks that cemented his status as a household name in 2021 Keith was awarded the national medal of Arts more recently he performed at the 2023 People's Choice Country Awards where he received the country I con award his death comes after he revealed his stomach cancer diagnosis in 2022 in a statement posted to X formerly known as Twitter Keith shared that he had been diagnosed in the fall of 2021 and had undergone chemo radiation and surgery so far so good I need time to breathe recover and relax he wrote expressing his desire to spend time with his family and see his fans soon earlier this month Keith spoke about his battle with stomach cancer in an interview sharing how his faith had helped him through multiple rounds of treatment cancer is a roller coaster he said you take it for granted on the days that things are good and you lean on it when days are bad it has taught me to lean on a little more every day a longtime advocate for people facing cancer Keith established the Toby Keith Foundation in 2006 to support children battling cancer according to its website the foundation focuses on providing noost housing for children with cancer and in 2014 it opened okay kids Corral a cost-free home for Pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment at the Children's Hospital at U Medical Center Stevenson cancer center and other nearby facilities there is no greater gift than keeping families strong and together during a difficult time the foundation's website States if we can alleviate stress on a family encourage a brother or sister and comfort a sick child then we will make a difference in the fight against cancer the foundation also confirmed Keith's passing noting that he had fought his battle with cancer with Grace and courage
