TV Preview: Netflix - Kaos (Q&A w/ Jeff Goldblum, Janet McTeer, Nabhaan Rizwan, & Charlie Covell)

um childhood I was a very nerdy child and I loved the original Clash of the Titans and apparently according to my dad was here I used to watch it on a weekly daily basis and used to I was a weird child I used to quote lines from it and then I moved on to reading the myths and then as I got older I just loved any reinterpretation so um Margaret atws the panelope ad um Caroland Duffy's book of poetry the world's wife which has This brilliant interpretation of all iny which is kind of a big inspiration for this um and obviously like Percy Jackson and all that kind of thing and um it was the first play I ever wrote when I started writing was a short play about Clon Vester in the Underworld yes pretty pretty Niche and uh yeah and so uh and then I I'd always wanted to do something about the myths at first I wanted to do an immersive theater piece didn't get the funding but here we are and and and yeah so when I I did a show called the end of the world and then um after that [Applause] I and I just I I love this idea of um being able to put a classical figure in a kind of uh a modern um gritty setting um and I just these ideas kept popping into my head um so obviously it was one and then I had this idea one day of what if Zeus was having a midlife crisis that but like um and about 12 years later I I got to make this show with the most amazing team of people in front of the camera behind the camera and um it yeah it's very Sur Real being here and it's it is a dream come true it's amazing so yeah it started a while ago so a long answer Sor great long answer can we talk a bit about you teaming up with sister pitches how did how did the idea evolve as you work with them well I think they said politely this is a lot and very confusing could you please make it make sense no they were they were amazing and um they're such they're such brilliant producers and and they make such amazing shows and um because I think actually Nina Le was the first person I ever mentioned the idea to and she was like yeah that's go legs and um and then and so working with her and with sister I mean I basically came with I think it said to say a hot mess like a fun hot mess but it was a lot I think every single God was in it and it was um it didn't make much sense um so with sister they they were just brilliant at kind of helping me pone the story and then together you know we kind of worked out uh what how the stories would connect um how retailing the myths wouldn't feel like an anthology but would feel like a whole piece um and and yeah I mean they were just they were amazing and yeah it was great and here we are today with three of your Gods which is always a pleasure to say I start with you here I want to know what's it like these two beautiful people as your parents on screen yeah um I mean they're very clear I I kind of forgot that they weren't my parents I I I still forget and um no I I'll still being presious um pretty pretty amazing just to just to hang out and I remember the scenes um cu the scen episode one The Breakfast Table and we return to that table those W um as this season goes on and I just remember just hanging out there with you guys the day it was just so much fun um yeah pure joy you got Jeff anytime there's a piano yeah yeah come on there's a piano there's a piano in that room best believe J played that piano it's joy and you play a very dysfunctional family to say the least how did you find that balance where you find your characters in those moment um from um Charlie ph's a brilliant script and a Darkly hilarious and very moving script and very specific um description and depiction of uh my character and and you know our relationship and then Charlie's um you know sharing with me and us the back backstory you know the way uh that the these myths have been you know know uh made gritty and uh and surprising uh had all been worked out and and uh you know that that that was it and then you know with the best actors in the world the Fantastic eyes and be in proximity before you start to open up and do better than you ever have uh yeah you know all that there's much to say about that but and then the brilliant direction of a run your UMO and Georgia Banks Davies and Kat Carpenter and uh it was a great team as you said and just find find yourself in that setting that room speaking of which dick Lun uh is the production designer oh my God fantastic and then Isabella Summers later puts on this fantastic score you know Isabella Summers from Florence in the machine fantastic uh Rebecca hail did put us in those costumes really which Charlie had already described in Visionary detail so a white jumpsuit with a sort of Elis I and then they made it you know you know know I mean gosh I wish I had a son like I was never that handsome his watch his watch oh oh well he get gives me a gift that's right that's right that's right you saw wait till you see the rest of this series I I can't help gushing about it I think I'm very excited about it I think it's really great Charlie and you guys really really great I've seen all Eight Episodes a couple of times I'm looking forward to seeing it again but wait till you see where it goes the whole idea of it in a nutshell without spoiling anything is that and then I'll sh shut up I'm so sorry Zeus this this Zeus is so megal iCal and narcissistic and and um materialistic and has accumulated this go you know place and has Li lied we will find out that he's full of dishonesty and deception and torture and cruelty and Charisma which has caused earthlings to you know worship me this and that but finally you know some of my good family members and some earthlings and some well-intentioned lovers and Seekers of Truth um to find their power and um and possibly we wonder might use their new found power and Union to turn the page and to bring this abuser of power down I just love hearing you say the word earthlings um J how would you describe Hera where do you begin with her because there's been many different interpretations years um how did you find your life um I think what was so amazing about um well two things really one one that was so amazing about uh Charlie's writing was as you've seen a sort of taste of it in in episode one is across between the truth and the myth and what is modern and what was so brilliant across the board actually um was the set for example of Olympus you know which is Grand and marvelous and also kind of Kit and also a bit Kardashian andit you know and so you know there was a point where it was are you going to wear a long gown with long long hair and then they go no let's keep the short hair and do that and then and then the whole thing starts to the tone starts to set itself and then in terms of playing with her um I think uh well um uh what can I say um you've heard the great Jeff gold Bloom discuss um the piece and um he played the piano and he played the piano when which was on the set and so there was a lot of that going on which was I can't tell you how much fun it was and you can imagine him and him so I would just sit there you know drinking coffee in the nice white occasionally say Wy ly and hope for the best so that's sort of basically what it was and but no I think Hera is um how how I I would say that she epitomizes having been married for um couple of thousand years she epitomizes the woman who has an awful lot of power but won't necessarily show us until she very good and in pling diis that's uh that's a to get that as an opportunity the God of Pleasure that's that's Sensational very mindful very demure cuy cuy must been a lot fun to explore that character yeah totally true um when the script came along I was sort of looking at I don't know acting Styles you know um we kind of have a tradition here like we do like naturalism really well and the kind of rest of world cinematically like looks to us for that kind of naturalism thing and you know I was looking to challenge that I was looking to do something different and then the character of diis came along pleasure God of Pleasure Madness and wild frenzy I was like okay this is a perfect opportunity to you know push the boat out and um you know Charlie and the rest of the team behind it was so recepted to that um it was a total treat like every kind of creative is not only taken on board but built upon and we ended up creating this really like Rich tapestry with this character it's like Rich complex fine wine like a fine wine and you shot a lot of the show in Spain it's like it really takes you Clos can you talk a bit about shooting on location Spanish we just spish well you're you're on the beach or you're an about the first episode we see you there where can you say you took yourself where were you shooting we were shooting this so we were mostly in Andalucia the southern part of Spain um which was awesome okay I tell you a funny story um I was in my favorite place in Europe which is Seville um 2021 October and I was on holiday and and there's this amazing place called plazan Big M and they got all the like military thing there and you can take boats there's like a there's like a horseshoe shaped like body of water and you could take boats around and I was on the boat and uh I was with my friend I was like I'd love to shoot here one day random I'd love to shoot one day almost a year to the day we did we the concert obvious concert um in plaz deania in cille so yeah the job does take place and it was incredible how that comes around like prophecy what are you going to say I'm so sorry I was going to say you know when when you start a project you um usually you know you'll get your main actors to together and you'll all sit around a table and we'll discuss everything all of these things and um that did not happen in this I was doing something else and so I think I flew in Italy um and we were filming in isy which is one of the most beautiful islands in the world so I'm sort of walking down suddenly he this J and there's him having a swim up and then I go hello I jump in the ocean and then I go oh hang on Mom Dad so the three of us actors we sat around having our conversation in the swi in the ocean that was the very first time we'd all met discussing the great craft I haven't brought it on in the seat because I didn't realize so I think I was in my my S of sports bra my knickers or something it was very seral the whole thing was amazing it was amazing it was memorable and believe it or not that was the very first time I had that event which I'll never forget was the first time I'd ever been the Mediterranean Sea no first time off of is that hotel that day warm and salty recommended Mediterranean Sea I got zck from that se yeah they have an irrigation problem off the so the water is clear as Crystal but um can I st you right salty so playing the different roles of course of Creator writer and exec producer keep it together um exhausting not just for me um it was well it was the whole process took it took years so I think I think CU I first pitched it in like 2017 I think it's it true that your whole body renews every seven years so technically I'm a completely different person wow so hopefully better at some of those jobs but no it was it was it was it was great I mean I love the writing car and I learned so much um in exing and um and and show running I mean it was and learning on the job and learning from all these guys and everybody else I it was yeah it was a challenge but a fun one what were the biggest surprises along the way things you didn't necessarily see coming I think how angry I can get about a ridiculous small point when you know when you look back and I'm not proud of myself and that like reaction to quite a minor note you're like how can you I just like you know when you're very tired and someone you about changing that and you go I just don't think you get it at all and then you think back we AG that's so embarrassing it's actually a really good idea and it's made the showly better so um hope I learn to control my reaction to certain things um but yeah I think what was what was the most actually the P SP was really special to me as well because I remember going on a a wcky there and someone says this is where we think we might film my's Palace and I I cried I might have been I don't know again tired or hormonal but I I I just sort of I cried s embarrassingly in the corner of the P because it was just it was just unbelievable that we were there and it was kind of happening because you these ideas and and then you know hearing these guys come in and say lines you've written it's so surreal and such a kind of it sounds like such a kiss off but it's really a treat and being able to collaborate with all of them and you know I might rewrite a SC and come in and say what do you think about this can we change this and they were so good at offering up ideas and and there was open very you know fun feedback that we that they give and it was it was genuinely a pleasure so yeah I mean it was it was I've now not answered your question again I've read off it was it was great it was great and dreams do come true I'm glad your body renewed it's very nearly time for your questions and thanks to the very efficient nature of modern technology we have um if you could be a Greek called for a day who would it be and why it doesn't me any Greek god diis perh well no I mean you know um Zeus was a you know my plate was full to burst in and I was nourished it was delicious and uh if we were so I got to be Zeus for more than a day you know for this period of time and I would look forward and have an appetite to do any more it turned out that our destiny is like to do more of that so other than that would be John cetes John oh that would be the GRE you'd be yep y that top that J good [Laughter] luck yeah yeah that's hard I think that probably stay as here yeah yeah God of women queen of gods yeah I'm I'm intrigued by Hades cuz he's he's a God but he's like kind of a bureaucrat he like dresses up in a suit and tie I think that's that's instantly interesting you get strong bureaucrat energy thank you [Music] this genuinely great answer um well it's a I I really like Prometheus but I don't think I'd want to be St to a cliff having my liver ped out but I've always liked him very much because you know he's kind of he's rooting for the humans and he goes fire and you know it's helpful so um yeah say but maybe kind of pre the the torment I don't know when he was when he was doing the fire giving you know before he was in so early early funny stuff that's what I would um guys it might time for your questions who wants
