GAME 135 ATLANTA BRAVES 84-52 @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 63-51

here in Philadelphia Citizens Bank Park the show has an NL East matchup the Atlanta Braves taking on the Philadelphia Phillies joined by my partner Chris Singleton I'm John chambi and Chris we've got an opportunity to watch one of the true superstars in the sport Matt Olen always exciting to see him in action and it seems like he consistently finds a way to impact the game yeah Bo it's offensively at the play defensively when he's on the bases and this guy's just a heads up player but he's got so much talent and he makes the most of that I believe it starts with his preparation because you never see him give away in it back all right we'll be back to get this one started after this about to get started here today St pitcher Zack Wheeler but Chris he hasn't exactly been Stellar here on his well I'll say this every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans in front of the city and you know this guy no different he wants to be more effective here so you know you look at the numbers they haven't been great at home I'm sure he wants to turn that around and we'll see if he's able to start that in this one digging in it's the Speedy outfielder Michael Harris first pitch and find the Zone Hammer Down the Line could be extra bases around first and hustling for second and it's a double to start the [Applause] game anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that's great work right there here's Orlando Aria fourth on the batting average leaderboard in the National League that's in for a strike hit's got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the Outfield is that the base runner second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit [Applause] pitch misses and the count is one and one wheeler one of the best strikeout pitchers in the game and that certainly is a benefit to him when he's in a spot like [Applause] this get the outside corner with that one yeah if you're going to be in the game in high L situations you to be able to get the swing and miss and put hitters away on the ground to First oh look at the stop and that's a great play for the out first of all that's a great diving stop to keep the ball on the infield then he's able to get up and get and out he also keeps that runner from advancing any further if thatall gets through the comple of this inning could be drastically different here's auna now in this one second in the National League in hitting just missed rander kick deals now this is in the air down the line castanos gets under it he's there he's got it run tags from third the throw is offline and he's in score and it's one nothing in that situation you're looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air worst case scenario a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third here's Matt ol and that one missing low he didn't want to give up that run but he did got the Fly ball sack fly out now it's time to attack these other guys get your team back in the Dugout fast B for a [Applause] strike next pitch is outside and the righty deals that's ball three Austin Riley next the bat for the Braves two down and that one is in for a strike Hammer base hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive man those are the types of hits where you don't feel any vibration in your hands whats such a good feel it's hard to hit a baseball much better than that and even a lot of professional hitters aren't able to reach an exit V of 114 mph tell you what that's a very impressive swing of the back Austin Riley at the plate with two away swings through that one 01 now comes up empty as he chases that one into dir another O2 count right here pitcher just in the driver's seat he can go anywhere he wants to go right here that one inside and the count is one and two it's a good take in the air right side no trouble here puts it away for the out and that is that a run on two hits and they leave one on to the bottom of the first it's the Braves one and the Phillies nothing back here Citizen Bank Park so here's the Lefty Max free and Chris the road has not been particularly to him yeah you don't want to be too quick to say that he can't pitch on the road sometimes it's just a matter of it's not having a f difference between the bullpen to the out there on the playing field don't know what it is but I know this he's got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we'll see what he's able to do in this one and he deals and that one fouled off down to the dirt swing and a miss and it beats him for the first out after the drop third strike no there's a small side of relief right there I mean just to keep speed off the base pass it's not just the pitcher it's other guys that have to think about it from your infielders have to think about that Runner potentially stealing but also be in position to make a play as an out thinking about a base hit to the Outfield I got to get to it quickly to try to keep this guy from taking an extra base so I think everyone just a little more relaxed that he didn't reach base the Phils trailing by a run here in the second game of the series a little out front there as he swings through it going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball swings through the fast up in the zone man he was really Tardy on that fast ball great job of setting him up by throwing the curveball add some velocity to it on the next pitch can't catch up and another ball just off the outside corner and the counts full now highfly ball out to left Center Harris brings it in and there's two away and time now for the Phillies line up and a key piece a guy having a big season for them JT real m boo he's a fun at bat to watch I mean definitely a threat whenever he's got that bat in his hands but for me it's it's all about the mechanics they're so sound and when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing so much consistency that bat stays in the zone for a long time and he squares up the baseball a lot in the air pretty deep out to center field Harris has a beat on it makes the catch in and over back at Citizens Bank Park all set for the start of the inning here's Marcelo Zuna he's not going to get cheated up there no he's not he's looking to do damage with every swing he takes wheeler back to work wheeler measures 6' 4 in 195 lb and he was awarded a gold glove in 2023 wouldn't chase that time he's been raking in recent games and a big reason why getting ahead and counts he's been able to do that consistently see the results inside just missed that one at the knees for a strike man that pitch was dotted so much talent on display when this guy out there on the hill and there's ball for I don't think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow a Al up to the plate two hits and four bats during yesterday's ball game hammers that one deep left field and forget it so he blasts one out the other way home run number 20 on the year and they add to their lead it's three nothing he only needed one swing toare not wasting any time in that at B aggressive and it paid off that's the exact definition of hitting the ball where it's pitched taking that outside fast and driving it the opposite way out of the ballark you want to bottle that type of approach so here's Murphy now I'm liking what I've seen from him at the dish lately hitting better than 350 this month that Clips the corner can be tough to bounce back after a big home run but nobody on nobody out you just have to treat it as a fresh inning here comes a Pitch hit in the air center [Applause] field he's got it and there's one down it's a good recover though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that here's Jared Kellick and singy we already know he's going to finish the season with a new career high in home runs that one finds the zone and that's strike one and he chases a high fast there Carl Dixon doing the behind the plate and boo I'm not sure if it's because he sort of sets up higher than most but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there but we may see some surprise looks from Hitters from time to time because that's just so unusual back to the top of the lineup so now to the plate for Atlanta Michael Harris doubled leading off the ball game then came around to score the first run of the game and that's [Applause] outside and that's outside two balls no strikes looks like he's being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up doesn't want to make another mistake the line in the pitch top of the zone and called a [Applause] strike some real good life going through the Zone on that one the line of the pitch twings and misses it's a strike out and that's his 200th strike out of the Season Braves pick up two on the long ball it's now three nothing back here in Philadelphia Kyle SCH comes up to hit here he is very much your typical power hitter I'd say he falls into the three true outcomes category well we've seen more and more of that lately the ability to drive the ball to slug is getting heavily favored over any discipline or strikeout concerns a three-oh lead is great but you can't get too comfortable got to stay aggressive keep attacking hitters try to cruise through this ball game swing and a miss strike one well after putting up a nice Inning on offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shutdown inning don't give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they're hot here's a onew sharp grounder that's through for base hit and the lead off man aboard love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way here's Nicholas castillos and that one is lifted in the air makes the grab on the run one down third and now it's Alec bone he set a new career high at home runs this year here and singy he's just trying to set the bar as high as possible now that one catches the zone that strike one good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can Elevate stay out on that double play lifted in the air right center field Harris makes the grab on the Run man it first Bryson stop stands in for the Phillies it's been a tough stretch for him at the plate no hits over his last five games and a swinging a Miss there in the on Deck Circle you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast B last thing you want to do is Miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count snags it on the run and that is that one left for Philadelphia they Trail it here three nothing and welcome back to the ballark now the number two hitter Orlando Aria the rander back to work in the air out to Center Marsh moves under it and it's caught for the out here's Ronald aunia Jr at the plate drove in a run with a sack fly his first time up singy you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and gets ready for the ball game I tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows on and off the field that one back up the middle going it gets through so man aboard now with one away just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field one gone runner at first and now it's Matt Olsen's turn to hit flobber to right field with back G a gigantic blast and they add a couple more it's five Z that's his third straight game with a homer singing this dude is on fire boo these kinds of streaks just don't come around too often well he went up there o looking to do damage I think he had his sight set on that pitch he went and got and circle the bases here's Austin Riley flyed to right his first time in the air center field under it pulls it down and there's two [Applause] gone now two out space is empty and now it's the Braves DH Marcelo Zuna he walked and came around to score his first time up just missed clearly he hasn't had it in this game and looks like sooner than later they're going to have to go to the bullpen and a good eye there well they gave up the Home Run earlier in this inning not pitching as aggressive here two is in for a strike one strike right through there for a strike love how vocal the Umpire is today no doubt in The Hitter mind catcher mind and even the pitcher mind as to the conviction in the call swings through it for the k couldn't catch up to the heater but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run Homer and the lead is now 5 nothing major league an outfield perspective that right center field Power Alley can be tough to play but the odd angles in left center field aren't much easier definitely an interesting [Applause] layout next offering is right side now he launches a throw over his head you're already down in the game and not just by a couple and then that error allows a run to score this is where things can really start to fall apart as a team they need to pick themselves up find a way to play Better Baseball the rest of the way one down so now to the plate for Atlanta Austin Riley that takes low for ball one not the easiest thing when you're talking about a guy that's you know perhaps was going to be in the rotation or maybe a long relief guy to not start an inning to come into an in with pressure on it and and try to get yourself comfortable the Lefty the one and that gets the inside corner for a [Applause] strike good eye on that spot good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with Runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch and there at the knees and that's strike two well in this situation with a runner on first less than two outs some say hey get the ground ball double play with two strikes some people say get the strike out I think you just execute your pitch make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it's going to be kick the ground the second might be two to First and he beats it everyone safe a run comes in on the play that one really hurts you're already down in the game and that error puts you even further behind just can't let it compound from here first and second one out so here's the Braves designated hitter Marcelo Zuna missed with a change up and that is ball one and now the Lefty that's outside and it's two and0 well usually a high level of confidence when you're facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 2 has put himself in a really good spot two on one out that one misses and it's three hits in a row I know that was a ground ball but it was absolutely hammered through the infield that's not one you're excited to get in front of if you're an infielder you know they used to say charging crazy so first and second with one man gone swing and that ball smashed out the line snags it for the second out man that's one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it's about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat here's Shawn Murphy he's built his reputation as one of the top framers in the sport right through there for a strike grab ball up the middle stop whips it to First that ends the inning and they limit the damage so they get three runs on three hits [Applause] b as he turns on the Rubber and with that good live arm delivers well every pitcher wants a run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs the one- one is fouled off swing and a miss struck him out couldn't catch up to the heater man there was no deviating from the fast right there he just kept coming after him with it here it is hit it if you can and he just couldn't find a way to put it in play stop in the box now as Audi so far sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this but he is ATT tacked hitters pitching on the road like this is very impressive this has been a treat to watch and another ball just off the outside edge and that's ball three two down nobody on last half of inning number five ler and that should be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and he'll pull in there with a stand up double a little more back spin on that instead of the Top Spin he's jogging around the bases rather than pulling up in [Applause] [Music] second Johan Roos will hit next line and that's a base hit Here Comes real mut around third the throw in the tag and they cut him down going for two but one run does score in the play before the inning ends so they get one run on two hits no errors and no one left on five innings complete it's the Braves eight and the Phillies one back here in Philadelphia CH of the sixth inning now the Le Fielder Jared Kel and the first pitch misses for ball one you know these Braves showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one the numbers say their Chase rate or swings at pitches outside the zone is under 25% and I think it's a big reason why they're scoring runs now a screamer into the Outfield makes the grab one down by not chasing out of the Zone they're getting good pitches to hit you can do that you have a much better chance to SC up the baseball and do damage like they have so far and stepping in is the Speedy Michael Harris swing and a miss as he was out front Off the Mark there and it's one and one the pitch ball two the only adjustment he needs to make is his Target if you aim at the outside corner that slider's going to end up way off the plate perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it a big swing of a Miss Bas is empty one away and we're the top half of the six cuts on it and misses that's a strike out slider got him for strike three wow just great bite to that slider broke hard out of the Z and he just couldn't hold up the swing you know as a hit that pitch is really hard to take and there's just not much you can do with it you know that but you don't want to get rung up by the Umpire bounce to the left side and that's just foul here comes the o one and that one finds its way through well singy he is locked in there well he's really slowed the game down and it's like he's moving in full speed and everybody is a step or two behind the way that he's squared up that baseball tells me that he is seeing it like a beach ball and here is Ronald aunia Jr first pitch misses AR off of first with two away there's the swing in a miss good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time he gets in The Hitting Zone hard to get the barrel to it bline drive that's a base hit out of the left center field throw in holds the lead runner at second two on now with two away that's back to back singles for him solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he made it out front for the line drive knock so first and second with two outs Matt olon up to the pl that one finds the Zone that's strike one first and second two down here in the second game of the series not even close there one ball one strike on the line base hit coming home one run is in and his hot hitting continues they kept him in the yard that time but all he's doing now is passing the Baton now on The Bu Spencer turn this guy's a strike thrower he's done an excellent job of good purpose pitch right there trying to tease him get him to raise his sights pop something up and make it an easy out L Drive Fair ball one run across and the double puts Runners at second and third with two out when you fall behind in the count You' got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance ofit the hard like you did right there so two on with two away and now it's the Braves DH Marcelo Zuna one for two just missed [Applause] and there's a foul ball a swing in to miss meanwhile AC The Bu Matt strong the Lefty looks to be getting himself ready two on two outs swings and misses good job at damage control right there so it's two runs on four hits no errors and a couple left on top of the order due up in the home half of the six it's the Braves 10 and the Phillies one back here Citizens Bank Park Tre Turner at the plate not the W to kick the pitch clearly down in this ball game and you can't look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing it's got to come one at bad at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch make that guy on the mound work to get you out I got a ball one strike right through there for a strike one ball two strike that misses the zone and it's two and two flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch keep the abat alive couldn't hit the fast ball at the knees here's the center fielder Brandon Marsh that one pushed foul the Phillies with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom of the six a little bit low one and one swing and a highfly ball to left sizes this one up puts it away for the out the b the first bem two outs Bas is empty Bryce Harper stands in for the [Applause] Phillies swing and a miss one well as good as things can be it can be a tough day at the office even for the Skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going in the air left side that one gets down for a hit around first heading for two the throw into second he's in there and that knock bumps his hitting streak into dou digits Chris he's 10 straight yeah and on a nice trajectory average going up OBP everything he's doing at the pl right now just seems to be working Kyle schwarber stands in for the Phillies that one finds the Zone strike one man it's second he swings and fouls one off [Applause] going two now got him looking third out that ends the frame one left for Philadelphia they're down nine it's 10 to one we go to the top of the seven so now to the plate for Atlanta Azie alz Turnbull back to work there's the strike not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way hard hit right side fires over to First and the lead off hter set down to open to seven nowat now it's the Atlanta catcher Shawn Murphy over for three a fly out a ground out and a strike out this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate Good Game caller good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands out the Braves up big in this one here in the top half of inning number seven next offering is in for a strike you come into the game knowing that unless the ball's in the dirt or gets by him we're probably not going to steal anything today so that's where you want to get get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits some SL some home runs can come into play and that's in the dir well I'll say this as a former position player and base stealer when you come into a game and you've got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm you really have to change your approach can't try to steal cuz you'll get thrown out maybe get a little bigger lead be aggressive on the secondary but this type of guy shuts the running game down got him out number two well just couldn't pull the trigger on the fast right there and I don't think he was taking it thinking it might be a called ball or anything I just think he was flat out frozen did not expect that location in my opinion K stands in with two away as he takes the ball ball that's out swung on belted that one back there and out of here a shot to the opposite field and they add to the lead it's 111 that's their third home run of the game they're having a lot of fun at the plate in this one they've got the longall working for them on autopilot elevated fasts especially away are like putting the ball on a t hitters do a lot of cage work they're comfortable Hitting off the te's but he was comfortable right there hitting that ball opposite field for a home run that one fouled off that's a strike across the top of the Zone oh this guy is so comfortable hitting with two strikes even a good pitch early in the atat if he's not ready to pull the trigger he's not worried if he gets to an 02 count and it finds its way through for a hit and that keeps the inning alive not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that's a team of bat right there nice job of stay back and B good deep and next for Atlanta Orlando Aria Harris the runner at first with two gone slapped hard the other way but foul and here comes that's a ball battling here as he fouls it away the one two misses to even the count oh this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the advat I'm sure there are sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single then have to waste six or eight and he got him strike three and that'll retire to side Braves get one of the big fly seventh inning stretch time back after this on the show and we're back ready to go for the last half of the inning so digging in now for Philadelphia Nick castanos the pitch on its way to the corner auna on the Run won't get to this one it drops foul the Lefty fires nope well it's been a very impressive outing so far his command has been a big part of it even when he misses he misses outside the strike zone which is exactly what a pitcher wants next offering in there for a strike and to count one and strike they're down to their final strike one ball two St next pitch is outside and a swing in a miss and that is the ball game well a big win by eight runs and when you have that kind of lead you make it easier for the pitching staff to come out make their pitches pitch to contact and not worry about giving up the lead so nice job today all the way around to get the W and your final to three
