Yankees Franchise - Jays vs. Yankees Game 2

e e e e e for for along with Chris Singleton I'm John shy and Chris we're not in for ideal baseball weather in this one it's cold out there so it'll be interesting to see if that impacts the game at all Bo this is one of those nights where position players want that pitcher to have a nice Tempo keep things moving don't take forever in between pitches because it just makes it colder out there you get stiffer and you're not ready to make a play like you need to be so that's the emphasis I think on cold nights like this and we'll be back with the first pitch right after this just about set to go now and on the hill today Clark Schmidt yeah zra last year was a little worse than average so definitely be looking for better results this season you know one of the keys is just being able to have a consistent delivery and to be able to repeat that delivery so you can hit the spots that you want to hit and have a higher chance of being successful okay all set to go here's Kevin k and a pitch now Fly ball to Right Center as this one sized up and out number one on the grab let's take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays this is a veteran lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience sing yeah no doubt about that boo these guys have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they've got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this they come to the ballark they know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand George Springer in now takes ball one off the popped up to the left into foul ground vulpi on the Move won't get to this one it drops foul the one to one and another ball the pitch sharp grounder that's through for a base hit so a man aboard now with one away really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield so man aboard bashet the next to hit first pitch doesn't find the Zone one ball no strikes that's belt fires that one finds the the pitch swing and a Fly ball in the air out towards right center field sto makes a nice running patch the first Vladimir Guerrero J Vladimir Guerrero Jr now singy you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and gets ready for the ball game I tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows on and off the field vadir Guerrero Jr That Swing so reminiscent of his dad a pop swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play two outs hit hard on the ground to short Zips it across that ends the frame no runs one hit no errors and a man left and now the bombers will get their shot no score back here with my pal s and today's starting pitcher Alec Manoa not the best results a year ago looking for better this season Chris yeah and I think this guy understands that if he doesn't make quicker adjustments and show Improvement that the patience that his manager has will not last as long as it did last year so we'll see if he can get off to a great start perhaps the work that he did in the off SE will show good results early on but he's got to get out of the gates going strong or else he may find himself in the bullpen or back in the minor leagues couldn't have timed it up any better than that first pitch fast a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely here's Alex Verdugo hit weakly on the ground and he picks it up in foul territory manoah a former Allstar he features the fouram fast a slider a sinker and he works in a change up and there's a hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out everything came together for him pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one he pulled it hard into the Outfield even when you keep it on the ground it feels great when you hit a missile like that and now it's wodo one of the stars in the win yesterday as he had three hits gets under and Pops it up and the infield fly rule call Batting let's take a look at our lineup a really frustrating showing for them in in their last game lots of traffic on the bases but they left a ton of Runners on base couldn't cash in their chances Chris they had plenty of chances there's nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively they just did a poor job converting in those situations you have to figure out what's your plan going to be maybe watch some tape from the last game make the adjustments so if you get those opportunities in this one you've got a much better chance of scoring some runs turned on but but foul wide of third Runners at first and second with one gone here the second game of the series now one miss he's looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam and that's in there at the knees for a strike two on one out that's the ball a lay off that pitch down righty to the plate wouldn't chase that time Austin Wells on Deck Circle and he deals got him swinging and stepping in for the Yankees Austin Wells second in the AL in home runs that's in there strike one swings and misses struck him out couple of strike outs with on sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning all set for the start of the Inn here's the third Bas Justin Turner now the right hander ready to go still no score bounc to the left side and it goes just foul Turner a guy with great back to ball skill the one on the ground and that's just foul he goes down looking well he went up there trying to be aggressive that's for sure hacking at those first two pitches but clearly that last one fooled him he could have been sitting on something else entirely but you want to be able to adjust on o and two and at least get a swing off when it's in the zone maybe choke up maybe spread out your stance a little bit you got to give the guy credit on the mound though he went right after it on the ground to Third and it gets by him one of those ey B hits through thei just kind of rolled over on it a little bit but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock and the batter now is Joey V first pitch and he just misses kicks and fires popped up under it brings it in two L down and now it's doton varo that one fouled off two gone but the goahead run is it first here at the top of the second rander kick steals got it by him for the K Blue Jays held in checked we'll go to the bottom of the second no score bottom half of it number two now it's the switch hitting Outfield Jon dingz the pitch that one RI but foul and a pitch no that's inside our umpire for this one Freddy Ferguson a consistent umpire by all accounts yeah I think the book on him is that he's not necessarily by the book with his strikes on but once you figure out where he's calling strikes you pretty much count on him to stay with that throughout the game the pitch that one to First Guerrero he handles it himself and quickly one away in the second good slider inside right there batter fighting to get there just rolled over it got the ground ball Anthony vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees out front with the swing and that is strike one and one one out base is empty a big swing in a miss two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count you're up there at the plate you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything look down and that one hammered K going back on this one pulls it in on the warning track thir DJ here's DJ Leu that to right and that is Springer pulls it down and he makes the catch and that ends the inning we'll move to the third with no score top half of the third inning Cav viio up to the plate the wind of the pitch it really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called this rain is not letting up yeah and if we do get a delay the unfortunate thing is the clock going to ticking on these pitch and they won't be able to keep their arms warm forever if it's a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early the one1 swing tried to hold up now it to third yes he did that's a swing the one two and another ball that one way inside got a count line in the pitch it's a lead off walk and that's the goad run a great back andth and that to play off some really close pitches found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you goahead run it's not but at the end a good theen opportunity right here and a swing to Miss's got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the Outfield is that thee run at second has a very good read and whether or not he can score on that base hit and the pitch stays alive on it way to the corner nobody can get there and it's a foul ball two on one out gets a piece and it stays only two top of the third no score next offering is down low well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the advat I'm sure there's sometimes where pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter two two now and that one ripped into right B one runs in another comes in to score and lead by two well there you go the RBI machine another clutch Runing it back yeah he's been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but to the home half of inning number three blue jays two and the Yankees nothing set for the bottom of the third now the first Chad Bell well after scoring rolls this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats back to work that one off the Mark Ball one Bell 27 years old usually a second baseman but today he's starting at first on the ground right side on the first one gone bottom of the third inning now T here is glaver Torres one for one he let the bottom of the First with a single he swings and fouls one off well not too big of an adjustment he's been on the same side of the field as the first Bas now just kind of moving over there and gets an opportunity see what his range is to his right good take by Torres laor gets a piece one and two the Yanks last half of the third he swings and drives one out to deep left field oh you are a star aren't you his fourth home run of the season it's 21 that's a great way to fire up this crowd they're feeling it now let's take another look at it but this time with the help of Stack cast well this one wasn't hit that high but when you can launch it at 111 milph off the bat and get Back Spin it'll carry enough to get out of here Bas is empty one away Alex Verdugo will hit next and he's already singled in this game CLS the corner it's O and one and one good eye on that spot Dr ball right side and it's through for a hit so they get a man a board with a one out single couple of hits in a row for him here he kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you'll take that anytime you can get him to find a ho one gone runner at first here's one sto he's over for one that one ripped they get the out on sto out number two man that's one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it's about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince that it was a very good ATB now it's Aaron judge up to the pl for one he struck out swinging last time here's a strike well pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there but you've got to get a pitch that you can handle comes up empty that's strike two here's the 02 swings throw it and that's a strike out but they draw within one thanks to the solo Homer on to inning number four blue jays two and the Yankees one so there there it is the crew chief has made the decision and they're going to delay the game the weather just too much to keep playing right now well hopefully the break isn't too long I think this could pass through pretty quickly boo but I'm no weather man I do know this these pitchers want to be able to stay in the game so we'll see for for welcome back and we have good pitches last time let's see if he can be a little more aggressive right here and that's in for a strike turn is an interesting guy to talk hitting with he's someone that kind of espouses the modern hitting philosophy the whole let the ball travel let the ball get deep for Justin Turner that is beat it with that I want to hit the ball out front I want to hit the ball out in front of the plate that's what he is trying to do swing and a miss him out now it's j got him a throwback no batting gloves that's off the mark and that is ball one RI to short V throws the first in time two up two down now it's the DH Joey vad for one so far now this one's crushed down the line looking foul ball that's a really good pass of the ball right there just a little bit too quick got to find a way just let it travel I fear more left hand hitter Waits slapped hard the other way but foul the O2 hit hard base hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive around first heading for two now the target second and he's out time for two and it's a one two three inning ready to go for the last half of the inning here's the catcher Austin Wells Manoa back to work swing and a ball hammered left field bar ranging back that's down one hops off the wall and the tying runs second base with a double I'm sure he feels really good about that one loud contact leads to the double I mean you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick now here is Jason Dominguez grounded out his first time pitch misses and that's ball one no outs runner on second swing and a miss and the count is one good late sink on that fast out of the hand looks so good and then by the time gets in The Hitting Zone hard to get the barrel to it up and in and that's ball two wouldn't chase that time's an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense 31 count be ready to turn on a fast and now it's filled up and boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast HS and misses it's a strikeout he's really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fool and up next for New York Anthony vpy o for one with a fly out to Center and he gets that fast by him upstairs it's and one runner at second here one gone off the mark there and the count even one and one one and one swing and a miss and that strike two clearly sting on a fast right there and just ended up out in front of the slider hey you can't fault him for his commitment now he's just going to have to batt strikes and a swing in a miss and two away now so backto back strikeouts now and they still haven't managed to do anything with the lead off double yeah you just don't want to get careless here if you've done a really good job to get two outs after that lead off double as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it's a nonissue l Hugh in the box now take strike one and that's outside one ball one strike runner at second two down and another ball pitch misses there and that's ball three first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no At All by the hit very patient showing good discipline now he's in the driver seat with the 3-1 count fouled off he was late you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball righty delivers struck him out looking a lot of adrenaline we can see it right there and sometimes you just got to let it out that's an outstanding job taking that executing and getting out of a tough inning and we're back top five John Shi with Chris Singleton and leading It Off the pitch and fires in a fast at 95 foul ball it stays nothing in two and the right hander deals gets a piece there we'll do it again and here it comes that's down and in2 curve right there kind of expects that good job Just sh that confidence and trying to get back into this count that will 95 to finish him off and now c viio a walk and a run scored his first time and it's fou away this guy who grew up in Big League clubhouses got to be a nice feeling singy when your father played the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom and that one is lifted in the s pulls it down and there's two gone here's Kier now one for two you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list in the air out to Center coming on snags it on the run and that is that bottom of the inning and stepping in for the Yankees Chad Bell first and the pitch that one hit the knees for a strike pretty impressive we haven't seen that pitch from him much but he's got a really good feel when he throws it and that's off the Inside Edge and one and one he's gone off speed he needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone e e e e e e e and the righty H center field so now back to the top of the order oh that'll make you feel good as a hitter right there that's about as Tex as it gets got his stride load out of the way early stayed inside that St up out front was like he was in the cage Hitting off a team laor Torres up to the plate he's already homered here in this one and fouled off the Jays leading by a run last half of inning number five and a strike to glaver the two strikes may see some mve there first base trying to stay out of a ball like this but he is ATT tacked hitters pitching on the road like this is very impressive this is been a treat to watch two outs ground up the middle that's a base hit throw in holds the lead runner at second two on now with two away and now big number 99 Aaron judge struck out on just three pitches last time and he swings and misses and it's nothing at war that Clips the inside corner for a strike got him third out that ends the frame yank strand air and they Trail it here two to one Inn started here's George Springer the rightand are back to work Springer multitime Allstar 34y old vet a former first round pick back in 2011 right through there for a strike next offering is foul back the pitch and another ball two balls two strikes righty to the plate and that's a little bit high and it's three and two he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he's W swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field that'll touch down for a hit now he'll turn for second in safely it's a double and his second hit he was all over that one put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can a gap like that think extra bases from the first couple of STS out of the he feel good that one B next up for the Blue Jays a chance for more damage right here couple of RBI for him in his last day and that skips in dirt runner and scoring position nobody out and we're the top half of the six foul ball there that misses and it's two and one that's in there on the ground to third handled by May Hugh tosses across the first now one gone in the top of the sixer here's Vladimir Guerrero J swinging a foul straight back I love the fact that we've seen both Vladimir Guerrero and vat J win the Home Run Derby they're the first father Duo to ever win it oh thatch got away from hit by pitch that one might stand for a bit but it helps the team and it boost the OB sometimes that tradeoff is worth it but sometimes it's not at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything Tommy kley taking over on the just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the gamey Turner box lays off for ball one oh I think really just trying to be careful man in scoring position there see if he can somehow navigate through this line get more not in he sa well that could end up being pretty costly right there they had the double play set up as a way to get out of the inning but instead it becomes a big strikeout situation with two in scoring position there's a strike 95 of that one swing and a miss as he was out front that time two two this one popped up settles under this one he's got it there's two away man it's so frustrating you got a couple of Runners on you want to try to drive in at least one run maybe you get a little too big with the swing pops out right there and I tell you what nobody's more frustrated with that advat than him tosses to First and that is swinging a miss and it's and one well the guy still a lot of first pitch strikes as a hitter you got to be ready to hit now that's not going to help you get deep into his pitch count and into the bull pain got to take what he's offering that day at the belt and Fs round Drive b h off to a good start with a lead off now well singy he is locked in there well he's really slowed the game down and it's like he's moving in full speed and everybody is a step or two behind the way that he squared up that baseball tells me that he is seeing it like a beach ball Dominguez in the Box here lets that one go for a ball on the ground right side four six three and they turn the double clay I think four six3 double plays like that are way tougher than these guys make it look sometimes because no matter how you do it the feed from the second basement is a tough one that's where footwork really comes into play but right there very well done V at the plate and takes High there two down nobody on and a foul ball just off the Inside Edge close pitch there and he's kind of wondering where it missed you know getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from it back to a back that one ripped left field oh third home run of the season and we all square it's 22 Chris he's homered in backto back games now yep seeing the ball well and he's got his timing locked in he's looking pretty dangerous at the dish right now anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate the percentages go up for the hit to do damage even if it's a pretty good Sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the pl B is empty with two away and next for New York DJ lahu fouled off left side swinging a miss and it's two The Hitter early and off balance on that swing if I'm the pitcher I'm taking a little bit more off see if you can get him to chase something in the dirt two outs hard L field Bas just a solid swing right there caught it out and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great Chad Bell stepping in for the Yankees up and in ball one with the goahead run at first here in the bottom of the six rander kick deals swing and a miss and that is that so they get one run on three hits including the home run no errors and one left off seventh inning coming up we are tied two two we go to the top of the seven and here is Joey vad kley back to work just missed well these Blue Jays finding ways to get on base but they still need help driving them home they only have one hit with runners in scoring position so a lot of squandered opportunities it's tough because those are moments you just can't get back sharp grounder that's through for a base hit man aboard the lead off single V next up for the Blue Jays who's over for two with a pair of strikeouts and that one fouled off the goahead Run aboard at first nobody out there's the strike at the knees and that's recognized that change up right out of the hand just spit on it Andy deals swung on beled Dominguez ring back towards the wall to the warning track makes the catch that's just a really nice catch on the run right there he saved extra bases for short the pitch his he'll give him a second to catch his breath before he's ready to deal the next pitch and now C viio swings and misses that strike one sometimes being luy is a swing and Miss if he makes contact with that pitch probably hits into a double play that one pulled foul field two he fouls it off will do it again the O2 and there's a ball try to keep this a two two game here the top half of inning number seven and swinging a miss two away he was able to execute the perfect pitch for that situation had been pounding BS and then all of a sudden pulls out the change up and has good enough command to make it competitive tell you what varing speeds like that to a h can be really really effective and right there you can tell that hit was just overmatched under it drops into the globe and that's the third out one left for Toronto and this game is still tied at two and two we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Caleb Ferguson this is his third time out this year so the lineup flips over here's glaber Torres he's already homered in this game the pitch that's hard hit in the line km racing over to make the catch clearly ready to hit right there first pitch of the inning hits a bullet and it just is one of those bad luck abs and up next for New York Alex Verdugo swinging a foul back that's out of play one down base is empty F back our way and that's out of play and a foul ball he stays alive pretty good pitch there to take a rip at he wants to get his arms extended he likes the ball away from him a little bit just not able to square it up ball to the right side he steps on the bag and that quickly two away and stepping in for the Yankees ju Soto one for three sharp grounder that's through for base H and that extends the inning all over that one right there he wasn't able to elevate it but he put a great swing on it right on time good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield it's Aaron judge now P base runner you got to stay dialed in here look for anything in the dirt try your best to get in scoring position two outs judge spoils kicks and fires ground ball left side and foul ball Here Comes an 02 to judge battling here as he fouls it away here's the 02 got him and he's gone for the fourth time tonight the Yanks leave one score remains two2 we go to the E and now for the JS George Springer the pitch just missed next pitch is downstairs will he been able to slow down the game tonight with his ADV bats and the biggest one he's had so far he doesn't look anxious at all pass ball for a strike two balls one strike and another Ball B theet waiting to hit for Toronto and that one off the Inside Edge you walked him oh tried to n right there and just missed his spot didn't off it now he has somebody to worry about over first bu bashet now at the out of the bullpen for the Yankees Ian Hamilton number1 L right Bas hit throw holds him at second but the goahead run now in scoring position and still nobody out nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn't always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly now a good opportunity to potentially Jump Ahead in this game here in the later Innings next offering is in for a strike one one with the goad run standing at second and we're in the top of the eight and it is two and one tough spot right here couple Runners on two ball count you can't nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch and something out over the pl it's going to bring in some rights two two now keeps the back going with a foul ball here's a two two gets a piece and stays alive righty delivers foul off the plate they'll do it again definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open to third over to Torres back to First and that is a double play as a former player watching 5 full3 double plays brings back some adrenaline it's such an exciting play and it's always a great reminder of baseball being such a team sport Turner climbs second with only one away two consecutive base hits for this team really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit long and he hit the ball on the screws and now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit and now it's DJ lameu digging in Turner to Second double play as they get out of another jam and the inning ends so it's no runs on two hits no errors and one left ninth inning coming up it's the Blue Jays three and the Yankees two all set to start the nth in this one now it's the Toronto designated hitter Joey V so they turn to the Lefty in this spot Cortez Jr bringing in the Lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic Bullpen move right here so we'll see how it works out and that
