col football conversation continues Big 10 media days continue third and final day in Indianapolis yesterday we had Lincoln Riley right here with us on get up part of USC's media day debut in a new conference also headlining day two Penn State and James Franklin who addressed the changes with his team they chose Penn State just like I chose Penn State to compete for championships uh and we Embrace that um but we are one of the few programs in the country you can win 10 or 11 games and and people are unhappy that's an interesting comment here they are Heather who's been out there all week Paul Fine bam who's look at the smile on Sir Paul's face what did you think of that comment from coach Franklin well James they're unhappy with you uh you're a very competent coach you've done a nice job you haven't done enough Penn State fans expect Excellence they expect championships they're getting a little tired of 10 and two seasons that the two biggest games of the year you blow or or last year the bowl game that that does not cut it and and for N1 million a year it's just not enough and James James has got a big break though Briny there is now a playoff so he can blow those games as he usually does and still get to the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the first round that's the bottom line he's been in this brutally tough division they have no more divisions by the way in the Big 10 but Heather he's been in that division with Ohio State and Michigan the two perennial powers and he's been definitively third in that group the 12 team playoff could benefit Penn State as much as it benefits absolutely anyone what do you see uh at State College this year Heather well when you look at what James Franklin has done he has had top 12 finishes in six of the past eight years he has won the Big 10 in 2016 and has never been to the college football playoffs so this sets up perfectly for them they don't play Michigan they do play Ohio State but to your point you don't have to win the Big 10 to get in this thing but what they can't do is lose that season opener at West Virginia I talked to James Franklin about this yesterday he and I both know how hard it is to win a game in Morgan toown Neil Brown is doing a great job if they lose that game this conversation changes immediately but they've got to get more out of their quarterback Drew Aller he's great in terms of keeping teams honest with his legs he is an efficient quarterback he doesn't make a lot of mistakes but James Franklin's looking for more explosiveness out of that passing game they've got to maintain that stingy defense and they can be an at llarge team it's a good reminder Penn State won the conference that year but got passed over by Ohio State or in favor of Ohio State for the college football playoff the other big school there of course is Michigan and we hear from them and all that sort of thing uh as we take a look at the odds here to favorites to win the Big 10 Michigan not used to being that far down the road now obviously we're not used to having Oregon in the mix in this conversation either what do you think Paul rebuilding season in in Michigan or is this a team that will compete for the playoffs I think they will compete for the playoffs shiron Moore had a great year as an understudy he got to coach in three or four big games he dealt with the pressure and I thought he dealt with it very very well this is a better team than I think everyone is giving credit the defense is outstanding there's some questions on offense the schedule is the issue that Texas game early in the season they're going to have to turn that game because they can't afford probably more than two losses unless they they they get very lucky so I think they're a legitimate playoff team they are on the cut line but uh they better turn a game or two are they the fourth best team in the conference Heather is that seem right based on where the odds are that seems about right but that doesn't mean they're a playoff team and Paul glass over the offense that only returns 24% of the offensive production from last year that's 132nd in the FBS this is this the struggle is real here in terms of reloading this team um but I think that they can be a fringe team who knows if there's going to be a three lost team in the college football playoff but they can lose three games Texas Oregon Ohio State maybe that road trip to Washington I think smart money says there will be a three team a three lost team that winds up getting in one more thing anyone who watches our shows knows that Paul F bam is one of my favorite people people in the world and Paul told us earlier this week that he is going to miss having Jim Harbaugh in college football and so Paul just for you I want you to enjoy a little bit of Jim Harbaugh's opening news conference yesterday with the Chargers feels like New Year's Day you know feels like being born feels like coming out of the womb you know it's like you're in there and it's it's comfortable and it's safe and uh and now you're out you're born the lights are on the you know it's bright got chaos people look people looking at you Paul it's an interesting way of describing the start of a season isn't it yeah greeny uh you win a Super Bowl you win a golf champion a major you win college football's National Championship it should change your life but nothing has changed he's the same Jim Harbaugh we left in Houston on the night of January 8th he's still crazy he's still Looney he's still likable though because he just doesn't make any sense but he's a very good coach if not a great coach he your thoughts as someone who has three children not one not two but three if poof was all you needed guys I'm just here to keep it real okay
