at halftime and then it gets worse for dju that's just when you P you see Happy Feet in the pocket can't really his eyes are downfield he's not seeing what he's throwing to just kind of tosses it away for the pick bad bad decision Max Tucker brings that one back 58 yards inside the 10 for Boston College and then it's castalanos to Kyle robishaw for the touchdown and the Eagles are up 21 to6 I don't think anybody saw this coming I know my Twitter feed was going nuts on what this look like early and often and finally FSU gets a little something going dju to KRON portier and now it's 2113 but they could not stop the run in this game Jeff this was one right up your alley Boston College ran it for 263 yards that's called a physical whipping I you could a dju all that nonsense when you can line up run in between the tackles and nobody lays a hat on your running back for four and five yards that's going to be a good day Boston College by far the most physical team fans headed to the end exits early that's Bill O'Brien remember he's the new coach at Boston College he may get some things done meanwhile for dju and Company a lot of questions so we know the seols had high hopes for 2024 after the way last year ended they're now 0 and2 despite being favored by double digits on ESPN bet in both of their games they're the third team since 1978 and that's as far back as the data goes to start a season 0 and2 despite being a double digit favorite in each game it could not start worse and our Lewis rck was on the call last night here's what he had to say but I'll tell you what this football team has some serious that being in Florida State some serious soul searching uh to do because this team could this season could totally go off the rails totally you see their schedule you know it you talked about it before we came on air this is a team that right now is fighting for it not being one of those imploding type of Seasons that abs absolutely cost all kinds of people some employment it's that level of disaster and Sir Paul is up with us early here Paul F bound so Paul our analytics tell us that Florida State now has a 7% chance of making the playoff feels like we should be doing the gym more right playoff we're just trying to win a game here Paul what are the right things to say about the seals on this Tuesday morning well that's that's the issue uh people shouldn't be worried about the playoff screening they should be worried about winning a game and trying to save the season I don't think they can uh Lewis is 100% correct in what he said last night this season is over I know that sounds like I'm going crazy I'm not uh this is a team that we were told deserved to be in the playoffs last year and certainly was going to be in the playoffs issue and they're not going to they can't do anything right they can't go anywhere they have no one else to blame I'm I'm sure somebody down there is saying who can we sue the only the only people to blame are are themselves and I I hate to I hate to be critical of Mike norell someone I'm a big fan of but he's done a miserable job of getting this team ready to go he must have been spending the offseason listening to all the fans belly aching about why they deserve to be in last year instead of Alabama well here they are uh there's suddenly an easy win on on most team schedule and we thought they were going to be a formidable opponent they're not they're terrible it is startling and and to that point I mean you start 0 and2 by the way both games L anyone isn't aware are in the conference I mean Georgia Tech and Boston College so you can't lose two worst games in this double digit favorites with everything in the world to play for right they wanted to come out and show the world we got you know left out last year we should they had every reason in the world to start this season fast jaat listen embarrassing that that's the best way to describe this start and you think about in college you have I mean I'm not going to say they're rubber stamped as WIS but you had these two going down as we're going to get our feet under us we're going to figure ourselves out you got physically whipped and again we can talk about the mistakes they made it's not a mistake when somebody lines up runs between the tackles and just physically imposes their will on you and what Paul is saying he tell me how you really feel Paul which is never a problem for you this we're worried about last year last year is gone bro all them guys are gone they've gone on whoever whoever's on their squad they got to make plays nobody for this team is answering the Bell that's a major issue and that's where the soul searching comes in well you get run on for 263 that's not just a fluke that's the answer to in Tallahassee the seminal ran for 21 yards in this game and gave up over 260 yards rushing our own former Boston College Eagle Damen Woody no one loved it more [Laughter] we smashed them boys down in tah hasset man smash them [Laughter] boys now that's a happy offensive linean Jeff is laughing over here one team runs for 263 yards and the other runs for 21 yards you don't have to guess who wound up winning the game the great Desmond Howard is up with us this morning along with with Paul and and you know the world is piling on Florida State and and and that that's it's understandable we know we're going to do it I would ask you as an analyst to explain it like this is a team that would seem to have absolutely everything in the world to play for early in this season after the way they felt like they were robbed last year how do you explain them coming out 0 and2 in games in which they were double digigit favorites in both yeah it's really difficult to explain because you thought that they had the talent to at least Beat Boston College and Georgia Tech right out the gate but I think that um both teams came out with excellent game plans and the Georgia Tech game I understood that they were going to struggle in the first half but the second half Florida State made no adjustments and in this game I just thought that Boston College and uh coach O'Brien you gotta give them a lot of credit they came out with a specific game plan they executed their game plan to Perfection which was keep away football in the first half I think in the first quarter they had the ball like almost 14 minutes so they were able to execute their game plan but again in the second half you didn't see any great adjustments and then Florida State just played uninspired for this to be their second game of the season their home opener and they didn't have a lot of juice a lot of fire was very disappointing and so Paul for those just waking up and joining us um you know talk about a 12 team playoff do we stick a fork in Florida State as early as this yes you do uh and I I know a lot of people will say there there's a lot of football left to be played no no greeny the football has already been played the these are not even big games on Florida State schedule uh they have blown both of them they're in the ACC which means they need to win that League at this point to to get an automatic bid or or or even into the playoffs and they're they're not going to they have to deal with Miami they're not going to beat Miami I I don't really I'm not sure this team can beat anyone uh the way they played in the first two rounds so let's not uh let's not you act like this is not a big deal it is a big deal stick a fork in them they're done we'll see you we'll see you next year Florida State hey they were both conference losses speaking of the conference let's stay there Desmond we didn't have a chance to talk with you yesterday one of the biggest stories of Saturday of course was Clemson getting blown out by Georgia 34-3 and after that game our Shannon sharp had very strong comments about Clemson's coach Davos Sweeney here's what he said he's gonna have to have an epip which is a realization that if you don't pay those if you don't get the transfer portal you ain't win got win Coach K said I don't do one and do no that ain't me right until he started doing one done if you can't beat him join you ain't got no choice you ain't got no choice get with the program you ain't got no choice you're not that good you're not that good buddy you're not that good if you think you just gonna get high school seniors and you gonna and that's what you gonna win with bro that's not gonna happen it is over and let me contextualize this for anyone who's not aware of what happened here there were only four schools in the country this year that did not take a single transfer Clemson and the three service acmy there are obvious reasons why no one is transferring to Army Navy and Air Force uh people would transfer to Clemson if D were willing to do that so you know Paul for those who were not with us yesterday you had some very strong comments and what what do we say about the the this approach that DB oen has chosen at Clemson it's a complete and total failure greeny and I don't know how you can find it any other way when you look up and down college football and the the top teams many of whom have quarterbacks who have transferred in in fact uh I I don't Georgia doesn't but but Texas uh does Oregon does so many other schools do and for davo just to completely you know say I'm going to do it my way that's fine but this is 2024 everything has changed and you're still being uh you're living in a World an anti- Delian philosophy and it's costing him and I'm not suggesting there's any the end is near for him but his fans the ones of which I've heard from already on our show greeny are frustrated and they don't know what to do because he's been so successful you can't go down the hallway and say get out of here the guy's been to four National Championship games and six playoffs he's taken Clemson where it has never been before but it's going nowhere right now no no one is questioning what he has achieved and no one is questioning whether he's a good coach but the reality is he again has chosen Desmond a path you want to talk about the The Road Less Traveled he has chosen not to take advantage of a new rule in the sport that quite literally every team he competes with has so Dez I want to ask you as a college football analyst does he have any chance of winning in a major way without going into the portal as everyone else does greeny the reason why a lot of coaches they dip into the portal nowadays is because they don't do a good job at developing the talent that they bring in you look at some of these um these programs like a Clemson you know and they have like high recruiting classes meaning they're either in the top 10 or top five you look at Kade kumnick this is his third year in the program his second year under OC Garrett Riley you would expect Kade kumnick a guy who they recruited five-star at least by year three show vast Improvement my problem is it's okay if you don't want to go get a quarterback out of the portal I get that you may go get a piece here like a wide receiver or an offensive lineman or a linebacker whatever the case may be but when you bring in this Talent of this caliber and we don't see the the progress the development agree with that I mean I think what what his point is is the best made right is when you look at this is not your ability to coach this is your ability to develop the talent on your team so many teams now are going to get players that are already developed they've already produced Big Numbers at other places they're coming into programs and I think that's going to be the part that's most difficult for Dabo it's it's much it's much different to try to to develop an 18-year-old and a 21 year old and now guys play six years in the in college or more which is crazy so these guys have a lot of football experience and you're comparing them to young players with no experience it makes it much more difficult I will say though it's not I I watch that entire game they they were with Georgia early on now but Georgia is in a complete class by itself so I would say to just rubber stamp all is for not there in Clemson because you lose to a lot of teams going to lose to Georgia this year grey a lot of Team probably every team honestly so let's not just say all in comparison to Georgia let's not just jump on that train that's fine I that's that all everything that's being said here is fine the only question I'm asking is if an NFL team and let's face it college football has become a professional sports if if if if an NFL team if an NFL general manager said we're not signing free agents we don't do that like we're going to draft players develop them and that's it and we believe in our system and we're not going to sign free agents he would last 4 seconds CU everyone would say what are you talking about here's a rule that everyone else is taking
