to the Big 10 and they're gonna be rolling Classics from all those all weekend we'll share some that we've highlighted for you all that coming up it's gonna be great so there are a lot of changes this season at Michigan right from the head coach on down but I think the most intriguing change of course or the biggest question of the season is who is going to be the quarterback for the Wolverines following JJ McCarthy's departure to the NFL because for the past two seasons it was a no-brainer JJ McCarthy was going to be qb1 this year the Wolverines have five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster and every one of them brings some unique skill sets to the offense so what is the plan going into camp this fall which began Wednesday well first of all offensive coordinator Starting QB Kirk Campbell says that all five are going to get an equal shot at the starting job but as Camp opened this week Campbell's depth chart went by age that's right oldest guy you're gonna take the first reps we're gonna move on down the list and get to the youngest guy that's right oldest to youngest I've never heard of anybody doing a depth chart this way but I'm like why not right Campbell's simplifying everything he's avoiding a situation where everybody including the media we'll try to read into every single decision every day and of course ultimately that starts to become counterproductive this way everybody gets to run with the first string Campbell says the situation will be fluid and can change every single day so you brought himself some time having to answer some questions to me I think it's brilliant actually I don't know why more people don't do it this way so the system uh will mean of course that old man Jack Tuttle will get first crack at it he's entering his seventh year of college football after being granted an extra year by the NCAA heck he's practically eligible for Social Security at this point although I will say this Tuttle is by far the most experienced quarterback on the roster he was once a starter at Indiana started five games he played 21 games in his career he's taken some snaps he's seen some live action now Chiron Moore at Big 10 media days he said that actually Tuttle could come out of this as the starter that everything's possible right now although many fans assume that Richard sophomore Alex orgy uh will be the starter now we saw a lot of orgy in the spring game he was one of the two starters in the spring game uh going at it and he was we saw him a little bit for a couple of plays each game as a change of pace quarterback under JJ McCarthy didn't really see him throw the ball that much uh but it is worth noting that tutle was also nursing an injury in the spring and so didn't get a good look there but Moore also noted that Tuttle while not really fully establishing himself as a starter think about it he's he's played in college football for six years and you may go well he's been around for six years he hasn't really been a starter except for the time at Indiana for a while and Moore brought up a good point he's spent most of his collegiate career backing up not one but two future top 10 NFL Draft picks that's right when he was battling at Indiana he was behind Michael penck Jr who went the first round this year and of course uh JJ McCarthy who went shortly uh thereafter uh from Michigan to to Minnesota so he's been backing up some really good quarterbacks so he's really excited about his opportunity this season we'll see what he does the reason he came back for year number seven thinks he's got a clear shot at it also there's Davis Warren who was also a starter for the spring game opposite of orgy and from what I've seen he's he's my favorite pick um I thought he looked the most comfortable in the passing game out of all the quarterbacks he's a Richard jors who's been around a little bit he's gonna get an early look at camp at first glance it looks like Tuttle orgy and Warren will get strong consideration for the starting quarterback job now there appears to be a bit of a drop off from that group to the next group with red shirt sophomore Jaden denle and of course the baby of the group the true freshman Jaden Davis who looks like he's got some natural Talent so it just might not be his time yet Campbell told the media that he sorted out the quarterbacks in Fall Camp before and he's gone into situations where he didn't have an obvious erir apparent so he said it's based on his experience he says it's important not to rush this process the process will take care of itself hopefully before week one you know you saw what happened to Ohio State last year they went like two weeks into the season they were still trying to figure it out you want to get that done at least a week to 10 days before your season opener so then you can go into you know game week mode with your guy all set a starting quarterback um Campbell has also admitted that choosing a quarterback too early could have negative consequences down the road if the staff realizes that made a mistake and then it kind of has to undo it now during media day Chiron Moore said that he's looking for a starter that can make plays period just make plays be a playmaker you're gonna probably get this job but you also have to make the right decisions time and time again and you need to be a guy that takes care of the football no turnovers now in front of whoever gets this quarterback job in Michigan it's gonna be a pretty good situation uh I know the entire offensive line is brand new everybody from last year's gone as far as the start are concerned but that doesn't mean the rookies we've talked about this here before um they're just experienced big strong guys that are ready to go they've been playing in spot roles now it's their turn to shine in fact if you look across the line start with the left side of the offensive line you got a senior and a grad student their Center and the Right Guard are redir Juniors and of course uh on the right tackle you got a red shirt sophomore so it's not like it's a a true freshman so you got some agents experience up front which is all good and then in addition to that you got a couple of nice best friends for a quarterback a tight end and a running back and Coulson Loveland is going to be a huge factor in this offense this year and he comes back at tight end and Donovan Edwards at running back those no Blake Corum Donovan Edwards is gonna get more of a load and we we've seen what he could do very excited about him this year he's going to have a huge year for them at running back so these are things that can help out the quarterback get settled in got a good line got a good tight end got a good running back boom got Sage outside there we rookie hazing in the NFL right and there's freshman hazing the good kind not not like at Northwestern where it becomes a thing right um just some good natured ribbing uh the kind um you know the kind you do with freshmen that now have money because they come in with nil money now Nebraska offensive line Teddy prasa said that quarterback Diller Rola took all the veteran offensive lineman out for pizza over the summer and PR chesa said that uh what he wasn't looking the lineman ran up the old bill got a bunch of extra pizzas probably got some extra pizzas to go racked up the bill on the guy but he was unfaced he was cool wantan to take care of his offensive line before they take care of him and he's got all that nil money no problem remember when you were in college probably had to scrape together a few dollars a few quarters try to get some pizza with your buddies not these quarterbacks with this nil money probably paid for the whole restaurant anyway unfazed very cool now little more serious tone regarding Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus safield sounds like he's kind of had enough of criticism from fans and the Huskers offense last year because he probably feels like last year's problems weren't the offense they were the players turning over the ball 31 times yeah that's going to make an offense look bad so he's given an ultimatum this year no turnovers none Zero Tolerance policy he says if it happens the situation will be remedied quickly this is what we told the guys on day one you turn the ball over you're not gonna play you turn the ball over you're coming off the field and uh again with all turnovers they had last year they cost them a bowl game and it did this a good football team that got got you know lost the low the the close games because they're turning the ball over so um with that policy if you turn the ball over you're not going to play I'm I'm All About It uh the problem with an ultimatum like this or at least last year because they started this last year too yeah yeah everybody's turning the ball over somebody's got to play you gotta put kids back in that maybe were're turning the ball over but all joking aside I'm curious to see how this ultimatum plays out because first of all uh I I agree with his thinking we all do if you know football but how are safield and Matt rule going to handle say for example the learning curve in inevitable turnovers that true freshman Dylan rayola will probably commit a quarterback from time to time you know they want him to play they yank him out they gotta put him back in if he turns you know if he turns the ball over but maybe that means we'll see a little bit more of Junior quarterback Heinrich harberg who's come back this year now harberg is experienc kind of part of the turnover problem a little bit last year too uh he kind of settled in was the guy that took the most snaps last year of the three quarterbacks that they were rotating in and out he played in 10 of the Huskers games he started eight of them he did have seven interceptions and only threw seven touchdowns but uh even with all the changes going on and with the arrival and the uh Fanfare with rayola coming into campus he decided to hang around and continue to play for the Oscars so he's got his place he's got his role but he along with ra everybody's got to take care of the football up there at Lincoln Nebraska all right speaking of quarterbacks let's talk about another situation this kind of follows up on some thoughts I've had here with you on lockdown Big 10 at Wisconsin I've had some questions uh about the quarterback and maybe some other people do too and everyone seems to think it's a WP that Miami train for Tyler van djk is just going to roll in and be the automatic starting quarterback for Luke fickle and the Badgers I mean you get a you go out get a high-profile guy and get him to transfer to your school I mean you kind of have to play him but I have argued on lockdown Big 10 that van djk is was very erratic at Miami he had a lot of good days and a lot of bad days very inconsistent although he is talented he's got big arm but I have suggested time and time again that Braden lock was more impressive and he's very talented himself look lock came into some tough situations last year uh played a handful of games with Tanner morai got hurt and he looked pretty good to me he looked pretty good he's done some things that freshman haven't done before uh throwing for a lot of yards and uh leading the offense and finally I think when he played last year they finally had glimpses of that Air Attack that they've been talking about over there at at Wisconsin with Luke f and Phil Longo coming in but they really couldn't establish that air attack with Tanner Mory he just he just wasn't that guy and I thought Braden lock was that guy I'm like why is this guy not playing more then he followed that up with a pretty good spring I thought while Van Dyk got off to a slow start because he was still trying to get comfortable and learn the offense meanwhile lock had been there for a year he knew it Wisconsin offensive coordinator Phil Longo says that in Camp there's going to be a stiff competition between the two quarterbacks he admitted that lock has a year under his belt with this system and he says he's twice the quarterback that he was last year belonga also did praise van djk he's not giving up on him by any stretch he's saying look man that guy's got a strong arm the fact it's so strong he can wait a second longer just to beat let things develop a little further down field not too long now because you g to get sacked but he's got the arm to get it down there so uh keep an eye on that I think that's going to be a good story to follow this uh this summer this fall over at Wisconsin got a quick update for Big Ten Stadium Projects you on stadiums I know we've talked a lot lately about Northwestern getting the new stadium the old one torn down the new one going up G to take two years to play on campus although they got that Ohio state homecoming game uh at Wrigley Field that'll be cool remember Penn State's Beaver Stadium that's getting a major $700 million overhaul as well and the Project's underway and they're working on a couple of things like the stadiums uh east side and the endzones and this work will carry through the 2024 season so have to work your way around that a little bit if you're going to a Penn State game other improvements they're gonna be Winter Rising the stadium then that's not going to be so noticeable but drainage problem usually the precipitation there in Pennsylvania doesn't come till later after Thanksgiving but now we're talking about hosting playoff games right in De December at least that's the hope so they got to fix all that kind of stuff uh all the gates and the South video and the ribbon boards will all be operational for the upcoming season so you'll get to see what Big 10 Classics customers all right let's take a look at this big 10 classics coming up this weekend the the Earth's going to move this weekend we're adding four teams it's official 18 teams in the Big 10 that means more big 10 Classics to choose from we're going to put it on screen here on the video if your audio only we'll describe it in detail for you got quite a bit on here it's a big couple boards here put it on full screen and take a look at what's coming up but before we get to the Big 10 Classics should point out that the Big 10 Network is going to have features on each of the new schools so uh they're going to run throughout the weekend but the first airing we'll start it off on Friday at one o'clock Eastern time Friday August 2nd uh at one o'clock uh Big 10 welcome UCLA just going to be all UCLA and 3 o'cl Big 10 welcome for Oregon at 6:00 it's USC now uh they're going to do something a little different at 8:00 Easter time they're actually another thing the Big 10 Network does that I like at this time of year they go around visiting all the camps they got a lot to do they got to get started going to visit all 18 and they are visiting the Washington Huskies training camp they're gonna air that at 8 o'clock Eastern but then at nine o'clock they'll air the Big 10 welcome for Washington and again all those will run throughout the weekend on repeats and whatnot but the first airings are on Friday so go ahead and record them watch them live on your Friday night watch them over the weekend all right we got some more stuff coming up some uh we got Washington Husky football classic at noon Eastern against Purdue this is the 2001 Rose Bowl January 2001 Marcus 2as Soo and the fourth ranked Huskies defeating Drew Brees how about that for a couple of quarterbacks and and the 14th ranked boiler makers at the Rose Bowl 34- 24 then at 1:00 we have an Oregon football Classic this great it's all part of the Big 10 Oregon at Ohio State this was a great game back in September of 2021 uh CJ verdell led the 12th ranked ducks to Victory against the third ranked Buckeyes in that game and then at two o'l we've got a Washington football classic the 1992 Rose bow Washington versus Michigan who would have thought back in January of 1992 that these two would be uh this would be a conference game someday Billy Joe hobbert and the second ranked Huskies defeated the fourth ranked wolverines in the Rose Bowl 3414 to claim a share of the national title there's more let's turn the page here the rest of our Saturday lineup over there uh like I told you they visit various training camps they were on Washington on Friday I think the start of the week at Minnesota and now on uh Saturday they're going to be at the uh at Illinois Brett belma and Company going to talk some fighting a line ey at three o'clock Eastern then at five o'clock a Washington football Classic this was the 2023 Pack 12 Championship Washington versus Oregon two big 10 teams now this is from December just last year Michael penck Jr throwing it for 319 yards while Dylan Johnson rushed for 152 yard yards and two touchdowns the third ranked Huskies win 3431 over the fifth ranked ducks to win the Pack 12 championship at the time now they're ours no more Pack 12 they're big 10 teams at six o'clock we have a USC football classic the 1996 Rose Bowl USC and Northwestern how about that January 1996 wide receiver kesan Johnson playing in this game as the USC Trojans dominate to defeat Northwestern 4132 in the 82nd Rose Bowl game at 7 o'clock another USC football Classic this time the 2004 Rose Bowl early 2000s that's when that's when Pete Carroll the Trojans had a rolling and this is the USC game against Michigan January of 04 Matt liner leading the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory over the Wolverines and let's see at 10 o'clock we got an Oregon football classic on the west coast if you're in Oregon this will be at 7 o'clock Washington versus Oregon this is a battle from uh 2000 I'm sorry from yeah 2018 October 2018 CJ verdell scoring a six-yard touchdown in overtime to lift the 17th rank ducks to a victory over the seventh ranked huskies and then on Sunday August 4th got some more action for you and we got a UCLA Football uh classic USC versus UCLA November 2012 Brent Hunley passing a touchdown and rushing for two more to lead the 17th ranked Bruins to a 38-28 victory over the 21st ranked Trojans UCLA was pretty decent not too long ago um and that was their season finale meanwhile 230 a USC football classic the 2009 Rose bow Southern Cal versus Penn State there you go January 1st 2009 mark sanche scoring four five touchdowns help the Trojans beat the nitty Lions of the rosebowl 38-24 and then another training camp feature as the Big 10 Network goes to visit Oregon so there you have it they're bouncing around a little bit that's what's on tap here for the weekend and then they'll do a different school as far as visiting their camps each and every day for the next couple of weeks I always watch those I think they're uh they're pretty good so you can always check that out but there you have it our Classics for the weekend hope you enjoy all that plan
