you that and our first pig skin picks of the year right here stay tuned for that look I'm as excited as anybody get the first weekend of the college football season underway of course with our 18 big 10 schools now the past two days on this podcast we've honed in on the five schools that open their respective Seasons early on Thursday and Friday nights and in yesterday's locked on Big 10 podcast we took a look at the Sunday night tilt between USC and LSU by the way if you missed it go check it out talk big 10 uh.com we'll have it right there but in the meantime what about the good oldfashioned Saturday college football schedule with everybody else what grabs your curiosity the most let's do it let's start with Penn State opening on the road at West Virginia that's at noon on FOX NOW there are big expectations for James Franklin and the number eight ranked Penn State nitty lines this year especially with the expanded 12 team playoff format everyone and I mean everyone is expecting Penn State to be in the playoffs and if not the big 10 Championship as well and by the way missing the playoffs this year would be considered a huge let down for Penn State naturally all eyes are on quarterback Drew Aller did a great job of taking care of the ball last year but many myself included thought that it was just too conservative didn't chuck it downfield enough and that may have also been because they really didn't have any Speedy deep threats to throw to and frankly I'm not sure that they properly addressed that situation in the off season although they did get jul Jian Fleming from Ohio State as a transfer you know taking the passing game to the next level will be my main concern and we have no concern about the running game by the way that's as solid as always Andy Kon Nikki is the new offensive coordinator there and he'll have a lot of pre- snap motion bring a little more excitement to the offense this year so hopefully that will do the trick for the dney lions having said all that I'm I'm not sure that this will be an easy win on Saturday for Penn State I mean I think they'll win but it isn't going to be as easy as some people think uh West Virginia is a pretty tough veteran team and this is their biggest game of the year at home they're G be fired up for it uh they've got a very good offensive line strong Runners this could be a good Smashmouth game in the trenches so let's keep an eye on that one meanwhile the 25th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes they host Illinois State on the Big 10 Network Kade magnam gets a fresh start at quarterback after a disappointing and injury PL season in 2023 of course the Hawkeyes will be without their head coach Kirk ference in this one he's sitting it out sitting out a one game suspension for recruiting violation ironically involving Kade magnamar so we'll see if anything changes offensively they have a new offensive coordinator and Tim Lester making his debut but I would expect more of the same this year for the Iowa Hawke you know super strong defense led by Sebastian Castro paired with um you know a barely adequate offense EV and just try to win games by not making mistakes it's going to be kind of the same old tune for the Hawkeyes but that same old tune won 10 games last year and they can win a lot of games this year as well I think this one will probably be in the 24 to10 range on Saturday by the way take the under at 40 and a half that's still too many points take the under you'll thank me later another noon game features Yukon at Maryland that'll Air at FS1 or on FS1 Mike loxley's group of course last year uh you know they got out to that quick start and I think they could do it again this year I think their schedule allows for them to get out to a quick start we'll see how they finish but they'll have to do it without the big 10's all-time leading passer analia Tanga Bola who is gone Billy Edwards Jr get the first crack at it maybe MJ Morris as well either way they have a great running back and Roman heni who comes back and kayen pther returns at wide receivers so uh the cover is not empty this year meanwhile Ryan Walters year two now for Purdue they should have zero problems with Indiana State at noon on the Big 10 Network they still have former transfer Texas transfer quarterback Hudson card a little bit disappointing last year wants to step it up a notch this year with a little bit of improvement he'll get some help from one of the most underrated running backs in the entire Big 10 and Devon mcabe and um let me tell you let me tell you this on defense sophomore safety uh Dylan thean Dylan great freshman last year now sophomore year got a year under his belt kid seems like he was in the running for freshman of the year every single week making interceptions all over the place this is a defensive superstar in the making look out for him at Purdue he's one of the brightest spots they have on this team at 3:30 on CBS it's your chance to watch one of the most loaded teams in college football Ryan days Ohio State Buckey open as a 48 and a half Point favorite versus akan Kansas State transfer quarterback will Howard makes his debut for the Buckeyes and its Championship or bust for this football team no doubt about it at 3:30 on the Big 10 Network Kurt zetti makes his debut as the Indiana hooers football coach he comes from James Madison and the hooers open as a three touchdown favorite in this game against Florida International transfer quarterback Curtis roor will also make his debut for the h hoers I'm excited to see him play as well at Fox on on Fox at 3:30 Nebraska hosting UTEP their four touchdown favorites the Huskers are all eyes will be on true freshman quarterback Dylan riola as he makes his first start got the weight of the world on his shoulders everybody's expecting big things off of this kid and I think he's GNA deliver I've been talking up the Huskers all summer long as the IT team if you will this season keep an eye ey on them all season long it's a good football team it could be a good year just got to cut down on the 31 turnovers they had last year and by the way not to look ahead but I'll look ahead next week coach Prime and Colorado coming to Lincoln Nebraska that will be awesome we will obviously focus a lot of time on that game in the next coming days um take a moment to peek into Northwestern football as the open the season hosting Miami of Ohio 330 on the Big 10 Network uh for the Aesthetics if nothing else since Ryan Field has been torn down they're building a new stadium it won't be ready for a couple of years so they have rebuilt from scratch uh a little bandbox aluminum bleacher Stadium it only holds 15,000 people but it is right on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan on campus it'll be something to see it's worth a tune in to check it out for a little while the cutaways at the very least going in and out of commercial showing the waves off of Lake Michigan and we'll see if they can remain anywhere near the eight win total they put up last year an impressive surprising year for Northwestern look we mentioned that it's Championship robust for Ohio State and well right on their Hills is going to be newcomer Oregon as the Ducks open at Aon Stadium one of the loudest stadiums in America versus Idaho that is 7:30 on the Big 10 Network Dan landing and his quarterback Dylan Gabriel are ready to take the Big 10 by storm and Gabriel's going to get a lot of Heisman attention if he puts up any stats at all all right we got a few more big games uh to cover new head coach Chiron Moore so um we'll see how this plays out the Wolverine I think will be way better than people think they're going to be I don't know that they're going to get back to the National Championship but I think they are going to be much better than people expect they'll be fighting to get into those playoffs I think maybe with Penn State as a third Big 10 team well we'll see uh their defense is led by defensive coordinator we wink Martell and they're stacked with Talent they're going to be formidable on defense again people aren't going to like to play against them on offense we still don't know officially who the starting quarterback will be to replace JJ McCarthy at least as of the time we tape this podcast for Friday hadn't made an announcement yet but we fully to replace 20 out of 22 starters from last year's roster that's going to be interesting now some other quick news real quick here's a name you're G to recognize former NFL coach Jack Del Rio will join the Wisconsin Badger staff as senior adviser to Luke fickle Del Rio was a coach of the Jaguars and the Raiders you remember he was recently a defensive coordinator for the Washington commanders until he was fired in November Del Rio played linebacker for the USC Trojans back in today and it seems the Badgers have been looking to fill this position for some time you may remember us talking in the spring they were looking at former Titans head coach Mike Vel for for this similar similar role and you remember Vel has got a relationship with fickle because they both have Ohio State ties but Vel ended up staying in the NFL he's a coach and consultant if you will uh for the the Cleveland Browns meanwhile the Badgers of course open up their season tonight against Western Michigan here on Friday night and we talk about Northwestern in their beautiful little new stadium on Lake Michigan well they have a new athletic director they've tabed Villanova ad Mark Jackson for the job Jackson is taking over for Derek Greg who resigned in June and was reassigned in June I should say and he will be the third athletic director at Northwestern since Jim Phillips left in December of 2020 to become the 10 it was nine it's now it's eight it's getting smaller and smaller it's getting into the point where I don't know I was gonna uh Penn State will win this game you know when the line was up there around 10 or nine I thought maybe maybe it won't be that close eight and a half that's getting interesting maybe I'll take West Virginia and and in the plus eight and a half um eight or nine it's going to be eight or N I think it's going to be pretty close Penn State will win a game over under I'll have it just a smidge over the 51 and a half uh Yukon is at Maryland Maryland should handle Yukon fairly easily they are an almost three touchdown favorite 20 and a half points I like Maryland to cover that maybe eek out that number over 44 and a half these first uh week games are kind of tough to figure out except not this next one Illinois State and Iowa Iowa they say Iowa's going to win by 22 and a half points 21 points somewhere around there um is Iowa going to score 22 points that's the thing right uh Vegas has this and FanDuel has this at 40 and a half I definitely take the under definitely take Iowa to win I don't know if they're gonna score enough points to cover the 22 and a half I don't know I I would say no I think the points Illinois state but Iowa wins and then uh take the under 40 and a half EP at Nebraska I like this one here's the only thing 27 and a half four touchdown win by Nebraska does dylian riola take time to get his feet wet if that's the case that may chew up a a quarter May chew up some time and then they might not be able to add on to the point total that's what I'm I'm hinting at maybe just a smidge under the 49 and a half and maybe they don't quite cover maybe they win by 21 so uh that's what I like on that one FIU and Indiana Indiana supposed to win by 21 and a half they should they should they over under it 51 take the over and take Indiana to cover and Miami of Ohio at Northwestern Northwestern a three and a half Point favorite this is going to be a battle that hook that half a point makes this a little tricky but uh you know and a low point total by the way 39 and a half nobody expecting much out there uh I think Northwestern will cover though barely barely all right let's see what else we have acan at Ohio State here's the situation with Ohio state they're gonna blow them out there's no there gonna be a lot of points you see 58 and a half is the number my question is though Ohio state will probably start sitting people uh Midway through the third and taking the starters out the problem is they're so deep that even the second string is good enough to be starters I say Ohio State comes up just a hair shy of the 48 maybe they win by somewhere between 40 and 4 Five Points uh I do like the over though 58 and a half Fresno State and Michigan Michigan wins this game listen last year when Michigan was playing their first three non-conference games against unlb and those types everybody's saying what's wrong with Michigan they're not covering right they're winning but they're not covering I think maybe the same thing here because Fresno State's pretty Scrappy team they're going to come in here maybe Michigan wins by 18 uh and then maybe they're right at that number at 45 and a half maybe UCLA out west at Hawaii UCLA a 14 and a half Point favorite I think this game will be a little closer than that maybe 10 maybe 12 UCLA wins take the over at 53 and a half elsewhere Idaho at Oregon I like everything about Oregon in this one Oregon wins Oregon covers the 44 and a half at a stadium and Oregon and Idaho go over the number at 62 and a half although Oregon will be scoring most of those points clearly we were stayed at Washington I would sit this one out I have no idea in my professional opinion how this Washington's got 20 new starters out of the 22 that were in the national championship game last year I don't know what they're going to look now now they should be able to handle Weber State so maybe I'll talk it into myself they win by four touchdowns Washington Washington covers but man I don't know what they're going to do and then finally on Sunday I like I like uh I like USC in this one at four and a half for LSU is too much but just as uh certain I am that like Iowa's going to finish under take the over in this one 64 and a half gonna be a track meet this game will be in the 30s the high 30s for both sides USC though I'll take them uh in the points I don't know who's going to win it's going to be a nail biter but I'll take uh I'll take the plus four and a half
