Davey Martinez recaps series finale against Pirates

Amy Jennings here at the PNC digital desk presented by PNC Bank brilliantly banking since 1865 the Nationals drop one on the road today here's Skipper Dave Martinez I think uh the kid settled down a little bit you know it's um bastet Ball's electric is is breaking ball is pretty good I think he started throwing a lot more breaking balls off balance a little bit um yeah so you know we just couldn't get nothing going offensively till late again looks like you know the bats started coming later and um just wasn't enough you talk a little bit about his stuff can you elaborate more on what makes it so effective yeah he's got he's throwing 100 I mean that's pretty pretty elaborate uh but his loc start Loca a lot better you know wasn't just down the middle so uh when you when you throw that throw like that and you you work ahead um and you got to break them all like he he did today um it makes him pretty effective CJ leads off with that O2 Homer to the middle of field like you'd like to see him talking about earlier this series um just what did you see in that at bat that you've kind of been looking for you know over the past few months yeah that was um yeah that was a great upat you know working working really hard to keep him in the middle of the field and slowing his legs down a little bit he has got a little bit better you know now now we just got to get him in the strike zone you know he chased some balls out of Strike Zone today uh specifically up um we got to get him a little little down in his Zone but um I thought you know he's swing about a little bit better he's really trying to hit the ball in the middle of field got a couple hits yesterday the other way and um couple line outs the other way so um but the Home Run was was exactly what we're looking for he's hit a couple homers over the last like month or so where you thought okay here it goes he needed that one and then he hasn't been able to keep it going from there how does he find a way to like carry this over into something the rest of the week yeah it's once again it's it's the chasing you know I mean he you know he's just got to really stop chasing when he gets the ball the way he can really hit um he seems to be hitting the ball hard so we got to keep him in the zone can you talk about again future September playing in important games and an arm like that is one you're probably going to see in future October baseball for you what can a young lineup learn about facing a guy like that yeah you know the biggest thing is you know to one we got to be aggressive in the zone but we got to get him in the zone and that chase work work good at you know try to work good at B I know his stuff is was good um two strikes you know we talk about you know you know if he's going to throw the breaking B we got to see the ball up uh out over the plate um and just have a better approach with two strikes just moveth the baseball um you know I always talk about you know in 19 we won a World Series because we put the ball in play and we moov the baseball we created havoc on the bases uh those are the kind of things that our young group uh when we do it we do it right and we're really really good at it now it's about being consistent with it what stood out to you about Patrick today different from his last three starts yeah he didn't you know two sea wasn't wasn't there today he tried to throw a lot more Cutters um some were good some were were were not good um just you know he didn't have the effect you know uh on that cutter as he as he normally has you know left a lot of balls out over the plate what do you make of the length that he gave you today oh I mean we need that I'm both with the two game yesterday both getting beat up um you know I like also I like the way salaz threw the ball when he came in and brick when he came in he threw the ball really well which is which is great to see it's not the first time you had to ask Patrick to do something like that because of the circumstances what elever else was going on with the team for everything else he's dealt with over the last few years how valuable has that ability been to always know that you're going to get 100 pitches out of him oh you know I say this all the time forget about his record forget about everything the guy goes out there to pitch um to give you uh length every 5 days um he's awesome I mean he really is I can't say a lot you know much about what he meant to us over the last few years especially with our young pitching staff and how he helped them um and how he takes the ball and and and gives us what we need when the other guys you know are out you know early in games um he saves a bullpit I mean he's been great and again with an eye towards the future how important is it to have guys in the rotation who can and eventually get to 100 110 pitches in a game yeah we need we need guys like that and and I I really believe our young guys will get there they really will you know I just got we got to make sure that um we take care of them a little bit right now some of them are going a lot deeper than they have in you know in the past um but we got to keeping ey them because you know they're the future they're going to you know they're going to help us win many games in the future well that's all we've got for you here from the PNC digital desk
