The Clacton Airshow 2024

hello and welcome back to another video on the adventures of Shawn Perkins YouTube channel today I got little Ryan with me and this Bellen cycling he never appears in a video but that's the first one yeah enjoy the video and I will cover as much as I can cheers for now [Music] that kind of looks yeah feels weird Cor it's pretty cool looking at the time to see if we've got a time for you yet it's looking about quter to 4: I think this afternoon because of the the wind Deb's bodington I'm I'm sorry we can't see your team today but you're paying particular attention to this L aren't you I certainly am I was very lucky as a child my father used to fly a Stomp and I spent a lot of my childhood in the front of one what's it like inside then because the seat is um temporary you actually can't see out very much and being little I was put in the front and just had to hope that I got to where I was supposed to be going cuz I couldn't see how old could you be when you were in the stop um I started about age five dad took me everywhere with him from the age of five dropped me off at an air show and picked me up 8 hours later now wonder do you love it so much and and tinged with such sadness that we won't see the Great War display today but the conditions where their base just not suitable for takeoff no unfortunately now it's much windier as Dave said up north and the other casualty was the fourth stomp which came from the same area as we from the lead pilot the team leader Richard Ward all the way from Kent today who was joined by Richard bant and another Richard just to make a simple Richard Meredith thank you to the three Richards and the JP formation display team sa back home to Camp see you go same direction the cha is operated by number six flying training school in partnership with bok International Group primarily flying University air squading students and RAF air Cadets there are 13 air experienced flights across the UK that offer flights to up to 20,000 Cadets each year you can join the RAF Cadet if you're between 12 and 17 years old squadrons provide a huge opportunity for personal development as well as a wide variety of Adventure Training in the UK about 100 ft of ground and targets cars it helps fix their targe solution they got missile loaded and they target the car we're now in the high energy section of the display with the Der the qu Clover and now the loop which is a quintessential aerobatic [Music] maneuver as he pulls B his subject to 5G he aims to pitch the aircraft around magically Circle in the sky even whil inverted the centrifugal forces keep him pressed into his seat best is you get shot one of today the Royal Air Force is recruiting for multiple rewarding anding professionals and has an exciting future with the flying in opposition now one towards the other to the center part of the beach smoke is trailing they are going up pulling up it looks like this might three the normal cruising speed is about 160 mph but these guys don't do normal we don't have to do normal so at the air show we float up to 200 mph just a quick mention from Essex police uh because Spencer Jarrett if you're listening Spencer Jarrett the police have something of yours on the green swarm so Spencer Jarett can make his way to the display and I'll bring you some details about why we're calling this the Toranto formation but what a site this is Sam right in front of us now so thank you to very sword in the worlding the display you can see just over towards the windfarm the beautiful stripes on the top of the highway there yellow aircraft which is the Stinson Reliance and to the left of the Le pilot we have the was helicopter this is a fantastic demonstration of the so importantly during and up to modern day in different aircraft as well as a extremely competent and significant part of Royal Naval Aviation history so we call this part of the display the Toronto formation the Battle of Toronto took place on the night of the 11th to the 12th of November 1940 during the second world war between British Naval forces under Admiral Andrew Cunningham it wasn't very powerful at all but if you get the day thees behind that's how powerful they are now very very slow awy Fair swordfish in the world she first flew onal day in October the 21st 19 19 41 and was nicknamed Blackfish cuz she was built by Blackburn aircraft at Sherburn in elmet and little wagle of the root tail there as she pivots around um the pilot can see you so do give them a big wave nose punching down towards the sea an incredible capable helicopter 56 helicopter that was used to transporting crew around when on active service for the Royal na now that gave me a little flashback to the Harrier days when we used to have the Harrier here at Clapton that would hover in front of pilot with Fleet air arm and the reserves from the early 88s right 2001 and he was aircraft carrier based and the first tour flying on HMS illustrious after his Naval career he then joined an airline and those fly a reservist and he own a hland chipmunk I bet that's a lot of fun yes just as the the WASP was being retired from Royal Navy service it was de banking to the right towards jck jck Beach and then to the left we've got the fairy swordfish pointing towards here A really lovely view here of the markings of the aircraft as she Banks bye [Music] there this dson valion is a high-wing aircraft as you can see she's a monoplane with seating for up to four passengers she's extremely versatile with good performance and an unwavering solid F when you fly them which is ideally suat of for communication and training worlds quite a graceful demonstration at the moment the top speed of 135 mph stands a range of 850 M so that's pretty nifty if you get around nicely you see looks very tempting but as the beach Patrol jet ski goes past us again a good opportunity to pleas to stay on the beach and you're not allowed in the water during the actual flying and that's for safety reasons ands get back in the water as soon as our display concludes it later on this afternoon it's Chief pilot Andrew M Davis unfortun embarked on Ling operation in melbour and I was actually involved in over 250 Landings on board and aircraft he was part of the royal Australian Navy from the yeah not [Applause] sure see IED when I was in the air I used to here at Clapton Air Show today his name is Jonathan Hearn and he's come from a town about 4 hours north of Sydney in Australia to be with us today to watch this very aircraft I'm not going to interrupt his filming he's holding his camera into the sky to record this moment Jonathan tell us why you wanted to come Halfway Around the World to watch this well uh my dad flew these off aircraft carriers in the beginning of World War II and uh it's just one of those moments we have static uh swordfish in Australia but to see one live and flying and uh it's just brilliant and I've just blown away thank you Clon for putting on the great weather magic uh yeah his history is uh pretty amazing he survived uh World War II he crash landed in Norway uh was a p for 4 years and uh thanks to um CA Charlie which was his uh F number side was uh here we're all here so thank you very much wow and you've got your Navy Wings swordfish t-shirt on today how do you feel watching this knowing this is just the sort of plane that your dad was in I think it's just amazing it's only what 80 odd years ago and now we've got amazing aircraft supersonic with space stations and it's just he couldn't even imagine this but he lived long enough to see a lot of it and the Pioneers the engineers the designers of these planes wow amazing did he talk to you much about his experiences in the swordfish not until later in life like like a lot of service person do uh but thank heavens he uh left us a book I don't get what people say I wasn't a man I was a boy I didn't have any idea War expert looking at the graceful maneuver of the Spitfire ahead of us on the beach it makes me think of our ancestors and those that served in World War II many of us like grandparents that served in the war my grandfather was an ARF engineer M ever and certainly the most famous and charismatic of corner of this wonderful tendering Coastline passing the martello tower ladies and gentlemen boys and girls would you please give a huge round of applause to welcome Sally be S is the last remaining airworthy B7 in Europe in Memorial of9 government sometimes up to thousand aircraft and in the early years of their serving in the war four engines the B24 Li that's the most recent versiones those miss the ofman defenses during the daylight they really have no I've looked into it already returning home terrible ofage and guarded aircraft just have a listener she passes by four right Cyclone radial engines each producing 12200 horsepower which flew up to 15,000 [Music] ft okay she wasn't even known as the Sally be at that point based at duckford Ted brought the aircraft to the UK to serve as a memorial to the 8th Air Force of the US Army Air Force and to air shows all over the okay she became an instant hit so where did the name come from well his partner in 1982 Ted and his friend Mark cell took the Havard to compete in the Volta air rally tragically the aircraft crashed the loss of T and deeply deeply sad for the aviation world but of course Ellie his partner was left chattered alone and now I know the team come to finish their display with a final smoke on pass at the end of the display they they like to uh punctuate that final pass with smoke coming from one or two of her four engines and it's a a dedication really to all the members sponsors and teams who help keep her flying so we'll see if that smoke is able to appear today for that final pass above all though she flies in honor and remembrance of all Allied Airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] great to hear the Memphis Bell theme of course the star of Memphis Bell in 1990 Sally B and there is that final smoke on pass let's wave to our pilot and say thank you for what you're doing thank you for coming to Clon today all that was Fab [Music] pilot you're right you won't be disappointed a low pass dipping in [Applause] formation you see the undercarriage of all three aircraft the sun just linting on their wings as they Bank around over out [Applause] [Music] to so banking past us on the beach just twirling the wings at us going from high speed passes to low speed 90° pass this is to demonstrate the aircrafts excellent capability from theing it's got a really shortterm radius and he likes to show it off in the display as he's showing is there with a huge Wing waggle it's fully aerobatic it has great visibility he has a canopy which has a ginormous glass Dome and he said as a p that you really feel like you're flying on top of the world my name is Dan she's the sweetest most perfect person I've ever met and I'd very much like to marry her this is from Dan so I mean I I need an update on this we need to know what's going on here sandier is it yes Mark 11 one of them known as L is uh pretty unique but look at that listen to that those engines as the blenin and the two spits just fly past us gracefully on the seafront we're going to be enjoying ladies and gentlemen boys and girls what about this as a sight and a [Music] sound and a smell too flying towards a center stage here the Bristol Blen and the two spit fires got Mar spit fire and the Mark 11 Spitfire wonderful Clarity here with a nice blue sky to see the aircraft as they B ground Bristol was actually in 19th the daily male challenged British aircraft manufacturers to design and build a small highe aircraft that could accommodate two crew and six passengers with the hope of it becoming the world's fastest civilian aircraft doesn't look too small for me but this is what they ended up with British airplane company responded to the challenge and they first flew the Blom the following year it quickly became clear an 8 seat twin injured airplane was faster than any other fighter in the roal back the Brit Memorial the Lancaster what a sight it is to see over Clon once [Applause] [Music] again so as the salute is taken to the Lancaster as she arrives we are so grateful to see this aircraft couldn't make it yesterday because of the strength of the Winds but they've eased nicely for this uh member of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight to join us the AO Lancaster and we're going to be uh spending the next few minutes in her company and let's make the most of it because there are very few of these lancasters air worthy now to fly we just have to keep everything crossed that the the great Engineers can keep her going for as long as possible so theab Lancaster is the most famous and successful AA heavy bomber of World War II and it's a legend that lives on today and the contribution made by this aircraft it's Cruz freedom of national will 2 years old so hard to imagine how they endured danger and dis comfort that really showed great courage and in continuing to fly knowing the odds of survival were so low M command suffered the highest casualty rate of any branch of the British services in World War II an on average Lancaster Market where Peter and his wife Janet lived for many years in retirement you'll find an information panel opposite Peter pot away which tells you about his remarkable Story and there's a Lancaster way too nearby reflecting the type of aircraft Peter FLW for most of his wartime operations [Music]
