Mid-2024 Sumo Rankings! (The Charts of My Tiers! - The Dohyo: E149)

Intro hello we're halfway through 2024 and it's time to update the charts of my Tears s h throw the get in the ring welcome to Theo hello and welcome back to the doo here on Mr jwags ch and well yes we are halfway through the 2024 season of BOS show three down three more to go and it's time to update the Doo's by anual semiannual twice a year rankings and while the who will be our next ozeki and who will be our next Yokozuna rankings are forthcoming now it's time to explore the charts of my Tears we out here breing hearts in chasing on my feelds where welcome to the chart of mat yes here at the doo we do not do a Alpha Dog numerical 1 through 42 ranking of the sumo wrestlers in the makuchi division no we tend to Clump them together in tear to Clump them at their true Talent level regardless of what their current rank may be and so once again tier number one the alpha dog uh empty that's still that's that's still going to be empty to me uh a true Alpha Dog in Sumo is is someone who if they are healthy and entering the tournament they are probably going to win the tournament we're talking like a Haku ho or healthy Teran Fuji level wrestler here if it's them versus the field I'm going to pick them now since Teran ofuji won his surprising you- show in January and you never want to say that it's surprising that your Yokozuna won a you show but ever since then he really has not been around and Yokozuna in so for that reason tier one alpha dog still vacant next tier tier two Y show contenders these guys I think are the cream of the current makuchi crop and every tournament they go out there I think they are going to get 10 wins up in the Saku in this tier are ozeki hodu kotak and current komui but likely skiak in the next tournament onosato all three of these wrestlers are 26 or younger two of them have already won championships and kotaka has won three of the last four Junu show including a 13 and2 playoff loss to our soul Yokozuna the thing that really defines this team is its Youth and its health so yeah for the rest of the year I think these three guys are going to be my usow picks next tier tier three Sanyaku sanyaku jooy these are wrestlers whose true Talent level lies up in the top 15 wrestlers but I do not necessarily see them as Y show contenders on a regular basis these include Dao wakamoto hadu ABI atami Fuji and hiri now daa and wakamoto hadu they have been up in the sanyaku for over a year now they both had like little recent dips down into the joy but then they came back with winning records and they're back up in the sanyaku not worried about these guys but I would be very surprised if either of them pulled out a championship in the next year Obby of course recently surprised me with a 10 and five up at SEI wake two of those were fous and wins but still like it's a winning record at SEI wake which is not always a given for Obby I expect his true Talent level is right about where it is up in the top of the joy in the lower sanyaku I do not expect this to be a successful ozeki run coming up for Abby and then two youngsters atami Fuji and hi do Umi hi Umi just turned 24 now at Tommy Fuji he shot up like a rocket but he seemed to hit that ceiling right there like almost exactly at the MGA Shiro one level but he ended up having six wins then eight wins then seven wins the fact that he's not sort of like blowing the field out in either direction of wins or losses tells me he is right where he needs to be right now now I expect atami Fuji to stay at about this level for the of the Year hopefully finally bumping up into the sanyaku but I'm going to expect to see some real fireworks next year and hopefully atami Fuji's first oaki run now hod DOI he just seems to be a guy I just keep underestimating uh much along the lines of how I used to do with wakam hadu but fortunately he has not listened to me and he has been doing wonderfully although he is short of stature he has had two Kachi Koshi up at the top of the mosir ranks I I think he's going to be one of our next komui so at this point I think it's time for me to stop doubting him and see see how far he can go it looks like his true Talent level is in fact in the top 15 wrestlers who knew Former Champions and now it's time for a completely new tier tier 3A contenders if they're healthy and as you can guess this is going to be a long stretch of of broken former Champions and takasu so yes this tier includes our soul Yokozuna terano Fuji oi takako and kishima former ozeki asanoyama and Tak Waka takakage and T Ru Fuji now Waka takakage and T ruuji they're they they're a little bit speculative here of course uh they are both former Champions and they are both working their way back up through injury wakataka KAG a little bit further in his recovery it looks like and T ruji we are not entirely sure what is going to happen to him as he has not wrestled since he won his Championship uh but I'm going to go ahead and give him the benefit of the doubt just this one time and keep him in tier 3A these guys are all very talented but they just can't seem to stay healthy for all 15 days now with the exception of Yokozuna Teran Fuji who of course can't get demoted with these other wrestlers I would be a little worried I.E not surprised if they ended up dropping down to like mid low mosir and then ended up pulling like an Obby 12 and three because they got a lighter schedule in the first week but right now I would not put money on any of these wrestlers making it through the rest of the year without any more Cujo absences next tier tier four your joy Joy course now the Joy Course joy course is a group of wrestlers who they're too good for double digit mishiro we're not worried about them anywhere near the judio line but if they do happen to have that great tournament and get bued up into sanyaku I I do not expect them to do well up there this tier includes gyama UDA M toiz zadu Midori Fuji matake Umi Shan no Umi onosho kin boan and recent debutant o sha yeah yeah ur ur got demoted back down from the sanyaku level I think we we all saw this one happening I do like a bunch of these wrestlers and do have hope that a couple of these wrestlers can bump up and out of this tier by the end of the year looking at you gyama possibly Osa if he really hits the ground running but most of these guys if you don't see them somewhere between mishira 4 and mishira 10 I would expect them to sort of return to that mean by the next tournament tier number five Sumo Young Man show me the sumo young man these are wrestlers who are 25 and younger and who I believe still may have a chance to make a jump into their best sumo this tier includes of course and person who's been on this tier I think literally every time we've done this Koto also Oho Roga onok KATU and Haku Oho now kotoo and Oho have been up in makui for a bit and they have shown some flashes here and there but neither of them have shown enough to really want me to like put put them up in any of the higher tiers I mean we have younger people up there like hodu and Hiro Umi and atami Fuji but these guys I think because they're so young they still have a shot but they're getting a little bit too old to be in this category Oho has been up in the joy recently but he really hasn't given me any kind of performance that shows me that he's really really ready to be up there Roga has been up in makuchi for a bit but he has just seemed to want to hang down at the low magir level uh I'm getting a little less optimistic about him having a breakthrough and sort of more of him being like a a kyoku t a level wrestler to sort of down there at low mishira but just a little too good to drop down to jerio Haku wo is of course still recovering from that shoulder surgery and this time he ended up going Cujo due to co so hopefully that means he will be able to hold his rank otherwise he may be dropping down to makush up but up until then he had been holding his own in judio and I really really hope he is healthy and back up in makuchi by the time he turns 22 which is still very young for a makuchi wrestler now onok KATU is very exciting he just turned 24 he's only completed four tournaments in Sumo and he's already pretty much one of the best people in judio right now he did get one fous and win but he still finished with a 13-2 in his judio debut I would expect him to be moving up to makuchi by the end of the year and tier Low Mishira six they are who they are low mishira so these wrestlers are who they are they tend to hang out in the lower mishira I would not expect them to get Kachi Koshi up in the joy but I would be a little surprised if they spent a great deal of time down in Judy and this tier is led by Nish kigi Shai Hoka T Fuji tamawashi Ruden sadono Umi taka NoHo Ichi Yamamoto and taka ruji I mean if you look at these names and if you look at what some of these wrestlers have done just as recently as like 18 months ago I'm a little shocked that like tamawashi shodai Nish kigi these guys were up in the sanyaku last year uh and Nishi this year but it has been a rough first half of 2024 for a lot of these guys now I am a little worried about some of these guys but taka Fuji ended up dipping back up from judio so I'm a little less worried about him but some of these guys let let's start appreciating them while we still have them I think we may have already lost m to the to the [Music] [Applause] judio so that's it those are the tiers I I tend not to rank guys who I think are going to be judio regulars or below uh but please hit me up with your comments let me know if you think I've left anyone off the list who shouldn't be or if I've over ranked anyone please give me
