Saints vs. Panthers Postgame Show | 2024 NFL Week 1

e [Music] welcome into our Saints post game show alongside Super Bowl champ Scott Shanley our Saint senior writer John deaser I'm Aon Summers the Saints win big in game one 4710 over the Carolina Panthers they have won their sixth straight season opener and they scored 47 points that's the most point they've had in an opener since 2009 it was a dominant for performance JD what was the best thing you saw today I think the offense came out and really stepped on the accelerator early and that's something that we thought we might see we didn't necessarily know we would see but the offense came out very very sharp scored on four five six consecutive possessions able to open the game with a long touchdown from Derek carock to Rashid Shahid so those are the things we were looking for hoping for didn't know we would see and we saw it early in this game we knew the offense was going to look different under new offense of coordinator Clint kubak and wow did it it was a lot of a run game a lot more than we've seen from the Saints in quite some time Scott how important was it for the Saints to get that run game going today this run game I think a lot of the pieces with Saints have offensively really fit into what coach kubak is trying to do in this style of offense if you think about the Rams and the 49ers and all those types of systems CRA is mcaffrey you start piecing in all these different players I love the horizontal running game the getting wide running reverses making a defense defend the entire width of the field that's what you really had seen in the past you saw more vertical game I think in the peak car Michael Shawn pner I love the the misdirection the making the defensive guys think and and have to react with their eyes so as far as that goes the scheme that that's now in New Orleans really fits the players and the personnel and the types of things they do well and you saw that on Alvin today with over 100 yards of total offense Alvin ends up with 110 yards of scrimmage he had 83 on the ground alone but Derek Carr was phenomenal he had three touchdowns no interceptions he found nine different receivers in this game and that doesn't even include the four different backs that had touches so there was just a lot of Versatility in this offense how does this offensive scheme really support all of the weapons that the saves have well when you feed the ball to that many receivers that many weapons you make the defense guess this kind of is reminiscent of the way Drew Brees did it I I know we shouldn't say that but look this is this is very much reminisent of the way the offense used to look when they spread the wealth and you didn't know who to defend and so the saints were able to get into that rhythm in this one Chris alive didn't get a lot of cut catches but there will be other weeks where he will Rashid Shahed seemed to be the guy in this one and so you're able to spread the wealth again make the defense gu keep them on their heels again that's the professional football team maybe not a good one but that's still prideful professional football players and the Saints were B basically able to undress them out here got to talk about the defense as well because through the first half of this game it took until the very last few seconds of the second quarter for the Panthers to get on the board was just a field goal it was 30 to3 at halftime defensively were the Saints a little more aggressive in the way they approach things I think it all stems from the the offensive explosion to start this game out there was there becomes a point in a game when you feel so good about your offensive performance that defensively you can cut it loose and you can start blitzing and you can get more aggressive defensively a lot of times last year when the offense is scoring 10 17 20 points you have to be conservative on defense not to give up a big score and get and let the game get out of hand so I think because of the offense the defensive play calling was much more aggressive and anytime you can hold a professional football team here point to one first down one third down conversion all game long I don't care who you're playing I don't know how many games the Panthers are going to win I just know when you compare the Saints to the Saints there were a lot of things that were improved from last year's team to this year's team absolutely and I know I was sitting next to JD during this game and I asked him at one point who do you think is the player of the game and he immediately said quarterback Derek Carr why well the efficiency I just think he handled the offense the way we expected him to handle this offense I don't know that we expected it this early but he was really efficient 19 to 23 didn't throw for a ton of yards only 200 but still spread the wealth and I thought he handled this offense so well to get everyone in position to get into a great Rhythm early and I think that set the tone for as Scott said that set the the tone for this entire game where everybody felt a little bit more confident a little bit more comfortable with what they were doing all right JD thank you so much for your all the details from post game in the from this game coming up soon so JD thank you absolutely thank later fol Scott you brought it up but the way that this team started it was almost a perfect start you set up four plays short yardage plays you'd only achieve 17 yards but then quarterback Derek Carr goes for the bomb to rased Shahed it was a 59 yd touchdown pass the longest touchdown pass that or the longest pass in General that car has had as a saint and that's what we were looking for you know the short yardage plays the the Run game to set up those big explosive opportunities what did you like about that first offensive Drive especially I I just think as a player and a coach you sit there all offseason you listen to everybody tell you what you can't do and if you're head coach Dennis Allen you listen to the naysayers if you're Derek Carr you listen to the Nays stairs if you're on the offensive side of the ball and you're you're coming in you're listening to people saying you're not good on the offensive side of the ball this this first game couldn't have went any better they couldn't have scripted this thing or dreamt it any better when you talk about the horizontal running game they got going the different plays and then the play action to take shots down the field that's what this offense is based on and by the way you have one of the fastest guys in the NFL to go downfield so it it all starts with the running game and I know the offensive line has been much mign and there's been a lot of concern but those guys played phenomenal today if you can't get the running game going you can't get the vertical passing aim going so there were there was one play late in the third quarter it was a quarterback sneak and The Surge of four to five yards on other professional football players doesn't happen very often the offensive line really play great today yeah thank you so much Scott we're going to head into the post game right now with head coach Dennis Allen too many um that's something we'll have to address this week in practice um but uh we still have a lot of things that we have to get better at so our focus is going to be on making the corrections that we need to make from this one improving on those things um and then getting ready for Dallas stay on the Seline he stayed on the sideline a good chance stay well he' probably be there next week I thought it went good I thought it went good I mean I think um you know it's one of those things where you're with them all week long and and and you're talking to them all week long and and so I just think there's something to being able to look in a guy's eyes and see and get and feel what what they're feeling you know on the field and so um I thought I thought it worked great I think Rico's been outstanding up in the Box for him so we got a couple of pairs of eyes up there that I think um I like I like how it's worked the last couple of times it seemed like even even beyond that it seemed like the whole offense had a like it looked like you've been running that for a long time seemed like everybody had a good handle on what you were doing and what you were trying to do and I'm guessing that's encouraging right yeah I mean um yeah we executed you know pretty well um and certainly there's there's still things that we've got to got to do better um but uh I think we scored on like our first nine drives and and so that that that's encouraging um and yet I think there were some other opportunities you know maybe to kick touch you know get touchdowns instead of having to kick field goals so um I I think the biggest thing when you win a game like that I think the biggest thing is keeping keeping guys grounded and understand that you know this is one of 17 you know so let's let's focus on the things that we have to improve on all right we'll enjoy the win um but but we understand we've got a lot of things we've got to do better teams that the teams that locked in in every phase can do you feel that like building during the week or is that something you just kind of find out during the game or like well look I I I felt like over the last couple weeks I think um just watching our guys in practice um you know felt like guys were getting a good good feel for what we were trying to do I like the speed that we were practicing um and and uh yeah so I I I felt confident coming into this game that that uh that we would play well in all three phases you mentioned the Run game and the play action passing game in your opening statement I think you been mentioning those two elements since February when you picked your offensive coordinator what would work for Derek Harman when you see getting ahead of the change right away on the very first play of the game getting the drive yeah look I think that's huge I think I think your ability to start fast you know if you're able to run the football it sets up so many more things that you can do um you know when you're able to run the football it's much easier to pass protect um when you're able to run the football you have the ability to to utilize play action passing game um and so it just makes you the the defense have to defend everything um and so look that was positive in in in this game and and and we've got to try to build on that and it's just your overall thoughts on d c yeah look I thought he played well I thought he managed the game well um the the the first touchdown pass to to uh Shahed was was awesome you know there was a little bit of pressure on him he had a step up in the pocket stepped up made the throw U put it right on the money um and so that was awesome to see and look and and look him no different than anybody else on our team we're going to go and look at a handful of plays that ah man I wish we would have and we had opportunities and so I think that's the biggest thing that that that we've got to we've got to focus on is is cleaning those things up um as we head into week two against Dallas what was the the goal of progression on that play third and four obviously could have been conservative and taken the chains but would would Shahid The Hope on that play yeah I mean usually when we put Shahed on big post there's you know we're expecting that you know that's what that's what we're hoping for um and yet I don't know how the defense is going to play it if they take that away we got to be ready to go to our secondary deal so um yeah it was part of the part of the plan kind of the aggressiveness you guys are hoping to have this year with this this offense yeah look I mean you know feel like we came into this game said we're going to go in and play the game to win you know and and um and that's what we did I thought we took our shots when they were available to us um and and we ran it when we needed to and you know we were we were we were prepared potentially to go for some fourth Downs if if if need be so um but yeah I think you know it's part of the deal you know you got to you got to play this game to win in our league and and and I got confidence in our guys to be able to do that have you been around Clint long enough to know that like all right he's good take you what you to make that that called that yeah look I mean I think yeah I mean I I think the the longer that you're around somebody the more you get a you know a feel for where they're at and there's conversations that that go on and it's like you know let's don't be let's don't play this game not to lose let's play this game to go win and um and that's what we did today and our guys came out and and you know they executed at a high level um and I think you know if our guys play that way um and execute that way then then I think we're going to have you know a chance in a lot of games and and that's what we got to do what about uh alante SC just kind of lines on those pressures going be effective on them well he's fast that'd be number one right um yeah look and he's aggressive see it's one thing to say that you're going to send somebody on a pressure all right but they got to be willing to to go in and and and deal with the noise that's in there every now and then it gets a little noisy and there's big 300lb offensive lineman and things of that nature so um I think he's he's fast he's aggressive um and so it was good to see him be able to run back there and U was it three sacks yeah so I think it's been a while since we've had a DV do that never that was going to be my next question be a long time right since the 60s Dennis Do You observe the 24-hour rule yourself personally like will you enjoy this one tonight or do you already start looking ahead um no I mean I'm going to enjoy this one why wouldn't I you know I mean these these things are hard to come by you know and so um but for all of us it's it's about staying grounded so there no 24 hours we're going to be in meetings you know tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. so I don't know what time it is now but we're less than 24 hours so we're going to enjoy it for you know a couple hours um and then we're going to we're going to get back to work tomorrow morning as coaches and players will get in around 9:00 get a little lift in get a little workout little sweat and and uh and then you know be back be back ready to go meetings and making Corrections when the decision for Jake um yeah I I just think that was you know my decision and what I felt like I wanted to do in this game um it may be that way next week it may not be that way next week I want both these guys to prepare as just as if they're going to be the starter um and so you know I I don't that's why we did what we did what did you make of uh Alvin stand today I thought it was you know I mean I think I think you know I have a vision of what he can do in this offense um and so um I think I think there's a lot of different things that we can do with him we've got weapons you know I mean we've got speed on the outside um we got Alvin and Jamal running the ball we got all the different things that we can do with taes Hill um so I feel good about you know the weapons that we have and you know our our coach is putting those guys in the best position for them to have success you kind of asked earlier you know if the team feeds off a fast start being in confidence and things like that did you sense that with Derek you know like comes out he has that big play to shaid like well look I I mean you sense that with with all of them right you know when you when you go out and you in your first drive and you you throw a long touchdown pass I mean I think everybody gets some confidence and excitement with that you know and and uh uh so so so yeah I think fast starts builds confidence in in in everybody and but I think this I think I think we had that confidence going into the game you know um I've had an opportunity to watch this team throughout training camp you know and and uh so I was I was I had no idea what the score was going to be all right but I had a lot of confidence in in in my team's ability to go out there and play and play at a really high level talked about the offensive line sorry you go ahead I mean Run game wise you've said it already performed really well talk to me about your two offensive tackles and how they perform throughout this game yeah um I would probably say without watching the tape I'd probably say there was a lot of good and there was a few bad you know um and so um those guys no different than anybody else we're going to go back and we're going to watch the tape we'll make whatever Corrections that we have to make um and work to improve um but I think when you look at the offensive performance all right and being able to put points up like that being able to run the football like that um three touchdown passes is that right so you don't do those things without your offensive line playing at a high level um and so I thought I thought they played well said the these things are hard to come by what do you mean by that wins wins in our league are hard to come by you know um that they're they're they're difficult you know and so when you get one you yeah you you celebrate it and enjoy it um and then you get ready for the next one you know cuz we're playing again next week you know what I mean it's not like we don't play for a long time we we got to get back and get ready to play next week you surprised at how this game took shape I mean just the suddenness and the way it kind of started Dom look I I I think I don't know that I saw the score being what the score was um but again I had confidence in in our football team to come out and perform well and you know I think they did that through all the time and like effort youall put in to install this offense over the past six months or so is it gratifying I guess as as coaches that the players are able to hear your message and go out and execute like they did yeah it is it is I mean I think but that's a long process that you know started way back in the spring you know and um look it's it's a credit to all of the coaches and the players that you know there's enough trust amongst both the players and the coaches with each other that we we trust each other enough to know that the message that we're we're all you know following um can work and so when you do all of that and then all of a sudden you see the fruits of the labor um yeah it's gratifying going with Landon over Sal in second half was that moreck not quite yeah look I mean Nick missed a lot of time and so um he's still you know we got to get him out practicing developing you know and then look we'll see we'll see where we're at um but uh but yeah that was kind of the plan going in is that Nick would be kind of the emergency eth lineman um in case we needed it with Alvin you kind of mentioned it before but just with what do you guys have around him now you think that can lead to a better year than he had last year well we'll see you know what I mean like I don't want to get into being a prognosticator and trying to fortun tell a little bit but I do feel like you know his skill set and what we do offensively I I do think that can benefit him which obviously benefits us as a team so I'm excited to see where it goes you had mention going into this one that which team adjust best would effectively win the game did how how much did that actually impact this game like did they give you a lot of things you had to adjusted um yeah look there was a few things that we had to make some some adjustments to but it it's that way kind of in every in every game um I would probably say that I don't know that we saw too many like really exotic things that we weren't um maybe ready for um there's a couple of schematic things things that they did that you know we had to make a little adjustment but other than that I I felt like you know our guys were pretty much prepared for what they were doing on the flip side of that do you feel like you provided them with things that maybe they weren't expecting don't know you probably I mean it's better question for them you know what I mean um yeah so I thought I thought offensively I thought we had a good game plan um with vlore uh speaking as hamstr in the game was that more precautionary thing not coming back um yeah look I mean with with hamstrings you never really know but he did he did um do something to his hamstring we'll evaluate it and uh see what that means see if that means Miss time or not um Foster Maro went out there you know late in the game with a concussion so he'll have to be in the in the protocol um and then you know look other than that we'll we'll we'll evaluate where these guys are you know tomorrow and um have a better idea of what we're dealing with you a lot of production out of your tight end room today fost Mor you went down towards the end there like you said but with him just Jaan Johnson and I don't know if you can call him a tight end anymore but Jon Hill are you excited about that room this year yeah I'm I'm I'm excited about what I think we can what what I think we can do offensively um you know and and uh so but we got we got a long season ahead of us and and and we've got you know a ton of things that we have to get better at thank you coach all right appreciate it guys Ty for sure watch I mean we we feed off them you know so it's a lot of big personalities over there you know a lot of Playmakers and so you know I think collectively you know uh I think we're at our best when we kind of using each other you know feeding off each other so that was a great start how does having I mean with that offense how does having them score on N straight positions imp well I think it's you know for us it's lunchtime you know we know we going to have a chance to you know make a play you know I think it's important for us to just you know win first down and you know get those teams in those third and Longs and you know I think defensively you know we're able to kind of come alive you know so uh know hats off to the offense you know those guys you know definitely carried the weight you know pretty much the whole game is what you saw today kind of TI what you seen in Irvine yeah yeah I mean we were competing man like really really you know ever since we came back you know like phase one and phase two uh obviously phase one is more like you know just working out in meetings but you know once we got to phase two man like like we kind of knew you know it just felt different you know what I mean and you know especially going to Camp man like just competing against that offense and you know like I said that skill set too you know like like we knew what you know NFL was going to be up against uh you know obviously man this is all about executing and um you know guys is making plays like when the numbers called so it was a few guys that didn't really you know make a play but like we know they can make those plays too so just looking forward to that continuing to this you know what's it like playing a game like this I mean you can't you can't necessarily Bank on it to kind of go your way you know like it went today um but you know when it do man um I think you like I said man everybody has to be ready you know in the number call so uh it was a lot of us that you know had opportunities to make plays and we made them and so uh just trying to keep that going can you walk us through the play when you get cover yeah I mean initially I thought I kind of overran it and um you know just really threw my hand out that late um and you know from there man it was just like where is the ball you know what I mean so I tried to smack it I thought I hit it away from it but actually I hit it closer to me so and then from there man it's just like you know uh just try your best to kind of Corral it um and you know uh just keep it you know so uh but yeah man like like those are kind of plays that you know I think we're able to make you know when we flying around n man uh will will has had a great spring he's a smart player you know he's a player that can really play you know four or five positions you know in the back end and so I think that versatility you know along with you know his mental capacity to to kind of you know uh you know really use information and take it to the field you know not not every player is able to do that um so uh but yeah man like I said man we were just trying to make the plays that come to us you know cuz so many times we look back on games and you know we maybe dropped that ball or didn't recover that fumble so you know today um you know all the hard work kind of paid off you know from the spring in Camp can you talk about the growth seen from Taylor first Saints back in history to have sacks yeah man like Tay Tay has taking this thing to another level you know he's he's really um you know not saying that he wasn't serious about it you know his first couple years but you can see the growth you know he's kind of stepping into that leadership role and um he's one of those players defensively like he's a weapon you know for us and you know he's not just a great cover guy like he can Blitz too he can tackle so um you know like I said man we get those teams on those third and Longs and you know now we can kind of weaponize the guys that we have on defense and um you know uh just just glad he didn't miss those you know what I mean cuz those are like the hardest sacks you know when you come through untouched so uh just glad he got him on the ground and Bryce is Shifty too you know what I mean so glad he got him down what makes those the the hardest one I think often times we think untouched it's easy it's just hard man I think as a as a Defender you you you understand that they have two-way goals you know what I mean and then some of these quarterbacks well most of them now um you know like like that's what make them special is their pocket awareness and you know escapability you know what I mean so um yeah man like GL got him down with the defensive backs counting for three turnovers and three sacks do that seem like a unusual formula to you or something that is very realistic on a regular basis for a defense like this um I think is realistic um you know we got guys that can cover on the outside I think we have guys that play safely that's you know opportunistic um you know along with the scheme like I think you know obviously it's it won't happen every week but um you know we feeling it man we executing at a high level like you know we we think that can happen you know every time we go out there matics wise you guys walked a lot of safeties down near that five tech is that something that's going to be a regular thing with safety blitzes or coming off the edge of that corner we'll see we'll see I think with this team you know we had a couple nuggets you know we had a couple beads on you know uh when we can you know pressure those guys or send a safety send a defensive back so but every week it changes you know I think uh you know we have the ability to do whatever we want to do um and be successful so um yeah maybe next week it won't be that who knows Dallas next week is any Improvement your team yeah yeah I mean for us man we it's just one game you know one game won't you know Define you know our season and so uh you know obviously it's one of those wins that you know you have to enjoy it um just cuz the magnitude of it and you know us coming back home playing in front of our fans you know I think it was a big deal for us to you know have that kind of performance uh but you know I don't think that performance has anything to do with what happened next week uh you know we got to come back to work keep our head down and you know just stay humble since you came into Orleans you've defined yourself especially as a leader especially going into this year with guys being hurt and such how have you translated that from on the field to back in the lock well I just try to be who I am you know each and every day uh you know I I love playing football I love coming to work um you know I love working with others you know what I mean and so uh you know for me man like I think that's that's important for me I'm I'm in a young defensive back room a lot of those guys don't have half the experience I have and so um you know it's just me kind of using that experience to kind of keep everybody you know just pushing forward you know what I mean and so uh you know that that that's a role that I you know and a responsibility I take you know seriously and so uh but yeah appreciate it how do it feels just that moment when you were recognized for the 50th um 100 plus scrimmage game and having super for you yeah I mean I never really keep track of things like this Doug had to you know Doug always tell me what's going on so he came and told me before but um man it's it's cool it's really cool cuz you know obviously been here my whole career and um just you don't really think about it well at least I don't you don't really think about you know the past years like I ain't thinking about 2017 18 I'm just living in it now right now so just to kind of quantify like you know put a little stamp on what I've been able to accomplish is is cool you know and then just doing it with my teammates and then the obviously the Super Dome I'm just recognizing me it's it's it's it's cool I always like to see the off doing what yeah I mean it's it's cool man when you when you I mean that's what we made some changes for and obviously we've been grinding grinding through camp and and you know we know the type of Playmakers we have and I always say not worried about anything that's going on outside of the building um we just worried about us so we were able to come in and execute and you know I think it was some plays that we we still had out there that we wanted but um it looked good today to back off of that you talked about the grind of this offseason was how important was it for you guys to start this way um I think I'll go off with Tyron said I mean this one game won't Define the next game I think it's just you know it's it's a Sunday um we we had a we had a good game we came out we executed um I mean it is is what it is but um it's it you want to come out every game and and and you know try to dominate and and and have a strong performance so you know I think it's still Sunday so 24 hours and we'll get into the next we'll go on to the next and what's Clint like on the sideline I a even see Clint man I don't know where CL was no I ran into him a couple times but he's so he he's so locked in he's focused like he he kind of in his own world um but I talked to him a couple times just what I liked and what I saw and and you know he kind of got fired up cuz he like man you know yeah you're right you're right you're right so um I like him down on the sideline so hopefully um he stay down there but he he he locked in that touchdown to really set the tone for the offense today I mean I think it was just I think it was good for Dereck man I I I love that he he stood back there and I was kind of looking back I was I was being a spectator a little bit I'm like looking at him and he just stood in there and launched it and um obviously you know we got guys that can run and and Derek got the arm to be able to put it on the spot for him so I mean I'm happy he got I think he got hit but but I mean he he he stood in there and delivered so um it's just dope to see those two guys connect because I mean you know what type of player sah is and then dereck's been working working working um and you know he wants to be great he wants to um he wants to execute and you know it's good to have these days like this where you kind of see what what what the future could look like you think need aame like yeah yeah I mean for I think we all we all want to see Derek ball cuz I mean we see it in practice and then you know he he he put so so much into it and he wants to be great he wants to you know he wants to be perfect um and as a quarterback you know and me looking at at a quarterback um that's you that's what you want your quarterback to embody like Perfection so um he he takes a lot of pride in it and to see him be able to go out there and and you know get some of those shots that he wanted and you know that he that he knows he can hit in front of everybody it's like okay yeah I got I got it I told y'all without saying I told yall did anything uh feel different about your role today man I just employee number 41 I'm just showing up to work man um I'm just showing up when an offense scores um on its first nine possessions and it's a new offense I mean I know you don't want to make too much out of out of one game but um for a debut like that I mean how do you put that in perspective um like I said I mean any game you want to come out and execute I I I I hope it for the whole season we score on every possession that we get the ball but you know that's that's that's far fits but you know I think we going to work like like you know that's the goal that's the standard we're going to always work and come out and and and hope that that's the outcome but I mean for today just speaking on today it was good to see it was good to feel you know um man I've been here a while and I I I know what it's supposed to feel like and that felt good today so um it's definitely exciting yeah though rushing touchdown at one point they got called back and the offense just kind of kept going back to you over again does that mean something to you like in a moment like that where they keep going back yeah yeah I mean Clint said it he like man I'm going to give it to you I don't care and I told him I'm like man I told him I was telling um Jan and tast him on the sideline I'm like you know sometimes you might get down there and then like for instance like I know people always talk about like oh T some steals your touchdowns or something right and I'm like in those moments you be like dang I wish I got but today Clint went back to be back to be back to me I'm like d get to somebody else but n uh I mean obviously I got the win for it and then Clint got the belief and then the old line and everybody just executed so we was able to I was able to get in there um but you know it's dope when you you you got to play caller that you know trust in you and believe in you and just got go in there and make a play do your teammates say that or like fantasy player sweep that at you uh every I mean it's just not not just taste them but you know taste them obviously he get a lot of run down there on the goal line and stuff but um really teammates they like man take some St your touchdown again I'm like and then he'll come to me and be like I'm sorry AK I'm like bro what are you apologizing to me for but when you put up like last year you ended the season scoring 48 points and a lot of Y said you know you felt like you were playing your best football when you have a new offense like this is it possible to feel like you picked up before you left off um I don't know the answer to that but Derek Derek I mean he been saying it all week like let's pick up where we left off last year like them last five so I mean I guess that that kind of resonated with the offense you know so how's it good to be able to go to CL kind of talk to him and him listen to you and maybe make some changes based on that's good even if he don't listen to me I'm going keep talking to him but um no it's good it's good cuz I mean I uh going back like I was kind of like that with with with Sean you know going talking to him kind of trying to be in his head and ask what he sees and then you know kind of sharing what I see so that's kind of what I'm aiming for with Clint you know today it was pretty light but you know we talked a little bit exchanged some some ideas and some views and you know he was he was receptive to it so I mean it's good to have him down there I'm not asking specifically about the contract situation I know that the contract situation has been such a conversation this year with no deal done before week one or reported you still come out you have a game like this contract aside what do you believe that a performance like this you going out still perform the team and everything like that what do you believe that that says about you maybe also to younger players May in those similar situations man um you know I I think everybody always says I got like a I'm I'm a mystery right so you know they don't know what I'm doing what I'm thinking but um saying it without saying it I I kind of made it pretty clear and and I wanted to make sure that mentally you know obviously I didn't come to OTAs I wasn't here for um I I was here for mini camp left that last day and then you know I kept everybody was just kind of like holding their breath for to see if I was going to show up the camp but I already knew in my head I was like man I'm going show up and I'm I'm going work like I always do and I'm going to perform like I always do God willing um and you know for for the younger guys I mean you know those guys were happy that I was there obious say like man I didn't know you was going to be here I'm like man I was going to be here bro I got y'all you know so um I mean I know you said what not talking about contract but we talking about contract like it didn't get done like I said it is what it is um it may get done it may not might not get done I'm just focused on football right now so I don't want to talk contract at all like I just want to I don't want I don't want to be I've never wanted to be the center of attention on anything on any front right so I don't want to be sitting here trying to negotiate a contract while we trying to win games or while we trying to get to a Super Bowl um and I meant it when I said it the other day we'll talk about it after the season so you feel that like it's it's an important showing that like that's not holding you up oh yeah man it's not I like I said and I and I meant it when I said it like I'm not I'm not worried about it I'm here to play like I'm going to play I'm going to perform like it's not I don't got no illness I don't got no I I don't got no mystery injury nothing like I'm here you know what I'm saying so um I'm going to play I'm going to perform I'm going to be here with my teammates coaches um and then I mean like just outside of all that I think the most important thing I mean I I love this city right you know I love the fans I love these people they support me they've been supporting me for years now right so I mean it it would be kind of for me in my head it would be kind of selfish to not go out there and you know I mean I interact with so many people every day like these people like love me like I'm family and I I I feel the same way VI versa so um I don't know if I'll be doing myself a disservice if I didn't come out here and try to put on for for those people you know what I'm saying that been supporting me he I want somebody to the to the pregame you got yeah man it's just it's it's love like man I love this city like I I truly truly truly love who that Nation as as cliche as it may sound you know everybody says that but I'm I'm for real like this is like family home like you know and when I speak I I mean it like when I say I want to be here I mean it you know um so you know I think you always see the fans and they talking about well like oh well he need be here forever and this that that like you know I I don't want that to be the focus of you know what's going on I just want to come out here like it's a Sunday we out here performing playing you know I get to interact with fans I get to feel the love from them and then we get to get a win so it's cool for the city cool for us cool cool for me um we just keep it moving appreciate y all right so D are you going to get a new social media post for the CH touchdown or do you just recycle the one you talking about where he's down there somewhere yeah I don't know I'm not very creative so it might be the same change the caption to like 2024 yeah thank you thank you for the idea yeah it might be the same I don't know uh but yeah that was that was a fun way to start the season for sure go back to the Press he better not that's an option about say you better not go back up after that what was that like Just Happening down day how how did you it was great you know um you know in the preseason you know we only have so many few opportunities and we're not really game planning not really watching film on who you're playing either um and so like the the the feeling on the sideline is just it's like practice you know um but you know when you get into a regular season game and you can you can feel the presence of you know we have we have a lot of veterans on on offense you know we got a lot of older guys that have played a lot of football and he can feel like hey we got your back and you know you know we're telling him hey stay aggressive he's coming to me stay aggressive and it's like you can feel that energy from each other um and you know I think it's nice to have him right there you know and it's nice to have my quarterback coach right there be a buffer you know cuz it's not always going to be perfect or it's not always going to be pretty so it be nice to have someone there to be a buffer as well you know at times and so you know I think that they you know they they obviously you could tell have all worked together you know you can tell that you know their cohesiveness and all that was you know unbelievable you know to me I thought that was really cool to see that's something I I was actually excited excited to see you know how they made adjustments how they talked about things um you know because you know I've seen it done right way I've seen it done the wrong way and I was excited to see how they did it so it's cool to cool to see you know um but that's just one game you know so hopefully we can keep that going could there have been a better Pro concept for the offense just all the stuff you're working on than what you guys are able to go out there and do today yeah I mean yeah you score you score 47 points or whatever and like yeah that I mean that's that's that's hard to do at any time you know especially in this league and especially against that defense you know they're unbelievable and so um you know hopefully you know the fans and everybody got to see you know what what it can be you know what it what it could potentially be um but I you know everyone's going to want to talk you know how exciting it was for the offense but our defense gave us a lot of short Fields you know we were able to go score in the Red Zone which you know was awesome and all that you know but you know we get a block punt on special teams it's a team game and and so you guys are going to get annoyed at me for saying that but I'm going to say oh you're this is a team this is a team that is super close to one another um you know the unity that our team has the the cohesiveness the Brotherhood that we have you know you know yes I want to give praise to Clint and I want to give you know you know praise to you know the defense and all that but you know you know we're all in this thing together and so them setting us up for short Fields allowed us you know it's hard to score that many points when you have to do it from the 20 every time you know but them setting us up with short fields and US executing you know allows a day like that to happen and so um yes I hopefully everyone's excited about that but at the same time I hope that our defense gets a lot of praise for setting us up to be able to go do that see on the sh yeah so it was great design you know Clint set it up um you know single high and you know obviously there different read check and all that kind of stuff but we got the look and the safety State on that hash and stayed low uh put my eyes on him to see make sure he didn't get off and then receive beat the corner and that that corner is probably thinking he has help you know there but just the way that Clint designed it you know to you know you know put something in front of him you know where that guy can get the ball too or that guy can get the ball down the field and it was just great design by Clint good job by offens line give me that that that half a second extra so that I could make that throw um and you know he obviously she just went and got it AGG on on third down you know opening drive and they have him go like let's go deep you know what was that say about and the kind of offens it says he's going to stra stay true to to what what he has on the call sheet and what we watched on film you know um you know there was an opportunity there uh that we felt that that was there and we talked about it throughout the week and you know he didn't shy away from me he's like like that's why we practice you know that's why we go through the film and all that like and when it came through the headset I was like oh let's go and and so that was that one fired me up too cuz he he stayed true to you know what we thought we'd get um in that moment yeah on point was Clint on third down like was a third and seven pitch to Alvin it seemed like you guys had a off balance on third down all game I man I hope all this love continues all the time for Clint um this is a long year and I'm going to remind y'all about everyone loving Clint than myself right now um but you know I think you know it was a he he he had a great game and and again anytime you can have a great game in this league coaching or playing you know you'll remember it forever you know and he did he had a great day um you know our our guys you know had a had a great plan on certain situational stuff uh for us we all believed in it we executed in practice um and and we executed in the game and so uh yeah I thought I thought the game plan was awesome you know I got to move around more out of the pocket than I ever have got to in my life so I've been praying for these days this this was awesome dere five five different players reached the how gratifying it's amazing um and you know you try your best you know to you know highlight players you know everyone in the world knows ol is our number one guy you know everyone in the world knows I want to throw it to him 30 times a game you know and for us to still be able to stay balanced um and be a balanced attack and you know there's things that he's doing to defenses um you know without him even touching the ball sometimes and I know that's not fun for him or his fantasy owners but uh it helps us as a team and to get five different guys in the end zone um you know that just shows the the versatility and you know that we're not just going to be onedimensional we have to be a balanced team if we want to do what we want to do and so you know it's not always going to be you know that way or that easy to do one or the other and we just got to figure out a way to win and like I told yall last year when I came here all I want to do is win and so if that means throw it 10 times or throw it 50 times I I really couldn't care less um I just I just want to win so that just shows me we found a way to get in the end zone we found a way to win today and that was what it took today you know you know da kept saying it takes What It Takes uh and know that's that's just what it took today D you said you like to run the ball but that criticism did already come for you on social media it did it just take the rushing touchdown what why did you decide to throw it cuz Foster waved his hand anytime anytime uh receiver waves his hand as a quarterback's running this way and they wave their hand in the Middle Field we just feel like we have to throw it I don't it's like a bug to one of those zapping lights I don't know I don't know what it is I was about to run it cuz he would to be honest with you he wasn't even in the read um and so I was about to take off and just go in but Foster waved his hand so I have to throw it D what was the design on that play like was it was Landon young an option for that I mean what was the Landon caught the caught a touchdown in practice yeah and so I mean you know there it sounds funny but I mean everyone that could have been a fun one to talk about too U you know getting him getting Landon in involved in the pass game um but Landon was a for sure viable option um but yeah yeah I won't get too much into the reading scheme but what about the third of Jan that you had it looks like did you see him early enough no did you see him late when you was he's just a part he's just a part of the read in a scramble draw opportunity um and so they sat uh low and outside on on AK um then I went to move and for some reason I just felt like the there was no Edge to the defense so I just went to extend the play in the Red Zone you know some the best plays happen we just extend them down there and we had two of them today uh so I just extended it and we're you know we always talk about that that route getting thrown on a scramble drill and I just put my eyes there and I heard Foster yelling from the sideline the corner route so I'm just trying to give Foster all the credit I can take two more for Derek please did you um see different like do you feel a difference in the the crowd today or have you seen the super Dum rocking like that they liked us a lot today that was nice um and that was a lot of fun so you know we you know last year you know towards the end of the year it felt like how it should you know um but we didn't earn that at the beginning of the year last year and so we're just trying to you know show our city how much this means to us and I was told not to lower my shoulder anymore because of that I'm just trying to show like you know my my teammates our our city our organization I'll do whatever it takes for us you know but da cussed me out and said don't do that again so like to us like we want we just trying to win their heart and I know that when we play well cuz the standard is so high here that you know we'll have their heart and when we have their support like that you see how they're taking timeouts on third Downs they're taking timeouts down the Red Zone like the fans I don't know they understand like when they you know you know when they're behind us like that like it's such an advantage for us as a team you know it is so hard to communicate you know a lot of this game is communication and if you can't communicate because of the fans I mean that is a distinct advantage and so um we're super thankful for them you know having our back tonight the ups and downs of last year and like the booing and things like that did you feel like you personally like you needed a fast start to maybe get that get the fans on your side and you know I I just I was just trying I was trying to pick off where we where we were last year like that was my mindset so I hope that answers it like that's where my thoughts were is we just got to keep playing you know with that aggressiveness with with that mentality you know um you know as much as we can to come into the season and I knew if we could do that and execute then it was going to be great cuz at the end of it was so fun like you know the fans have been great all offseason the fans were great every time I was around with my kids at baseball games was freaking awesome like I I didn't have I haven't had one bad experience since that one time in the super doome and so uh you know but but you know rightfully so like during that game we started playing better and they're like hey that that's what we want you know and so I was like I'm trying but uh you know to have that atmosphere to have that behind us that's going to help us win here at home um um for sure but my thoughts were just kind of based off of last year just like let's carry that over cool thank you hey are you leading the league how long you change the position into defensive end I don't know about that one I think I've change positions enough at this point are you that you're the first Saints defensive back to have three sacks in a game yeah they told me when I was coming off the field um they ain't really sat in yet I'm I was actually sitting in the locker room just thinking about it I was praying um it's a blessing so uh you know that's just a week one though and so uh plenty more to come do you thrive in those positions where you know they're calling up blitzes where you you know you get to be aggressive use your speed get you you ride in those positions that they call for you um I think so now uh I think last year we didn't really have too many uh pressure calls that I got home um and so um to see da calling it and I felt like da felt the energy that we had as a defense and he felt confident that I was going to make it get home and that everyone else was going to do their job and so um now like I want I want the pressure every single time come third down I going to ask how how how did you compare the feeling of a sack to an interception um I think I'm getting used to it uh uh it's different for sure sure cuz you know you get the interception you got a chance to return it um but um somebody was telling me as I was coming off the field you know um sacks get you paid just like interceptions get you paid and so hey keep running the sacks up that's what I got to do the first one the design of the first one you came right around Chase young was that based on maybe them overplaying him um I think you know either either side was going to probably get home depending on how we was playing it I think the the end really had two options and if he picked me up somebody else is going to be free right and so they ended up picking Chase up and that's why I came up are you going to request a sack bonus in your next contract I ain't worried about a second contract I'm worried about Dallas right now what's it feel like as a player play in a game like that where it's snowballing and the crowd is amped and both sides of the ball Mak plays what's it feel like to be on I you want that right um I think at Tennessee I kind of had that feeling a couple times in NE um and so having that in in New Orleans and having it at home for the week one game is it's exciting and I think that you know we got the city kind of kind of rolling with this right now and it's so you you just want to keep that energy up and keep that intensity up so third down you know we're turning up the crowd and they're getting loud with us right and they're having to call timeouts because they can't even hear they have to figure it out uh so it was just tur turning us up as a defense but I know it's was turning us up as a team as wellon said felt like a lot of guys wanted to see Derek have a game like that like do you feel the same way you know to see him have success like that considering you know some the things he was just talking about of course um you know that's qb1 and and when you got a guy going out there and he's leading the team and he's going out there and making these plays and running backs are running the ball hard and you know when you got a quarterback and you know that every time the ball is going to be snapped he's going to give us everything that he has um it helps us out as a defense right like we know just get the ball back to the quarterback right get the ball back to the offense cuz they're going to go down and score they're going to do something with it um so our our mentality was third down let's get off the field like let's give the ball back to those guys so they can keep scoring you got a chance to go up against this offense what you saw today expect I did I feel like I seen a little bit more uh them boys are running that ball today um so you know in Camp you know it's a little bit different you know we got shoulder pads on we're th up but to see guys run through tackles and um get Yak after after they carry the ball was exciting to see um you kind of look at the tape receivers were blocking uh you know we kind of go we feel that as as a corner we feel that when the receivers are in practice so I'm exciting uh can't wait to see what they continue to do tyr mentioned how hard it is when you're coming in and flying to go and get a sack like that did you feel real confident coming in when you I think after the first one I did um you know with Bryce you know he's a slippery guy he he breaks a lot of tackles you know that's something he really does well with and so we had to understand that and throughout practice we worked on you know breaking down to make sure he doesn't have a two-way go and trying to take one away um but I was on a roll man and and the D line was pressuring too so you know the left side of the D line bringing pressure on the left side there's only one way he can go so it helped me out a lot to get my to get the sack and so you know a lot of a lot of credit to the guys doing their job and you know we just executing a play you spoke in training camp forgive me I can't remember the exact language but about changing your mentality over the course of the offseason or something that how did that impact like how did that lead to uh your performance today um I think like I said I kind of changed my mentality there before Camp started um and so once I got into Camp it wasn't so much thinking about it anymore like I had made my mind up this is what it was going to be um I think you know with the guys that are around me with Tyron marshan and and Debo and having conversations off the feeli to you know have that routine um coming into the season it was just like stay stay in that level like stay where you are uh don't get too high don't get too low and just be a even kill guy and so um like I said it's just the first game though right you go to game four and you're having a bad day now it's what's going on week one he had a great game week four he's not so I just want to make sure I stay consistent with the guys and and in my routine and you know what I do throughout the week how do you manage sort of the excitement of a game like this versus the expectation of like with the rest of the season I think we just play Team ball man go out there one series at a time one play at a time um and play New Orleans Saints defense and I think if I do that and the team we all do that I feel like you know we'll we'll get to where we supposed to be is blitzing like that like maybe something you you overlooked when they told you first you were going to the neck something you thought oh I could Blitz more now or like is it like have you even thought about it no I didn't really think think about it too much I mean obviously I knew Nicholls get the blitz more than Corners get the blitz but uh um you know I'm asking questions with with the D line like Hey how do I get off the edge here like this dude is killing me and and so um you know I'm still learning I'm not I'm not an expert at it and so you know I'm going to take my my wins and I'm going to take my losses and um learn from those and and like I said more sages to come is there a go-to guy on the defensive line that you go to when it comes to quarterback depth using your hands just maintaining pressure on a consistent basis all of them chase Carl Breezy um uh cam all those boys Shep uh and they all help me you know they don't look at me like what you why you talking to me about about doing this you know they they actually break it down to me and and it was exciting I felt weird doing it um but but hey everything that they taught me is actually helping me and so it's good to learn keep your foot in too keep your foot in to sometimes bro sometimes um is is Will Harris consistently verbal like that or was he particularly anti as will every day I told I told Will on the field uh during practice I was like I got it bro like you ain't got to tell me that many times it's like hey I'm I'm going to let you know I'm going to make sure we're on the same page and and you know you get into games like this and it's loud um it felt good getting that over communication right like lante make sure you do this like like I'm right here like don't do this like he's overc communicating and in practice is kind of annoying but then in the game like like today and you know first game with him um so getting comfortable with him um so I won't tell him that anymore I'm going to tell him hey talk to me as much as you you need to talk to me and show as as kind of one of the younger players on this roster it it seems like there's a really solid mix of veteran players young players kind of up incoming players is that is that helpful does it feel like there's a good balance of that where a guy like will who's been around for a while can give you that kind of verbal input when you need yeah I think uh you know I think what I like the most is that our veteran guys are helping the younger guys we don't have any vets in the room nowhere on the defense not just the DB room but to where they feel like they're too good to kind of help us right like understanding that this is a business right so if you're making more plays then maybe it's taking plays for me we don't have any anything like that in our room and so um I love the fact that I can go to a marshan right like I and he can help me or Kool-Aid can go to a marshan or Rico can go to Cam Jordan we can ask questions and the guys are going to help us out cuz as a team we're just trying to you know we're trying to make it to the Super Bowl and so these are the guys that are dressed out these are the guys that could Poss get into the game so we're just going to make sure we we help each other and and reach that goal so next dad had you at like 2.64 miles hour on your stack just slightly faster than maid so are you all like in a competition nah n we don't be competing but she know I'm fast and I know she fast I know Chris fast so you know who's fast and and we just I mean the goal isn't to play at 100 mes hour throughout the game right and so whenever I can hit that speed I will but i' rather not have to touch it if I don't have to I see you standing over there we I didn't see you over there good all right appreciate you hello everybody 26 it's close was it think you're like 20 I'll take it I think it worked out yeah can you tell us a little bit about the like what you saw in terms of that touchdown pass and how it developed for you for yeah uh I just feel like it was a great executed play um great play call at that time um you know uh that's a play that we practice and um you know Derek did he told me to you know have my eyes open you know if the safety came down um he kind of followed the the over that was coming through and as soon as I made broke to the post um I saw no safety and I knew that the ball was going to be in the air but um play only works like that if everybody executes their job and um you know shout out to o line Derrik threw a great ball led me out there and I was able to track it feel having that play call come in in that moment I mean it's early in the game your five plays in and all right here you go no as offense we love it we we love aggressive um you know mindset um any chance we get to you know push the ball down the field and to give offense a spark especially early in the game like that um super important and I feel like it was a it was a big play to you know get us going and get momentum was uh man we we just feel like we're we're out there just playing um football uh playing Super confident playing fast um you know guys know their assignments everybody's keyed in um and super locked in onto the game plan and um you know as offense as a whole you know we just feel more confident about you know just going out there and you know executing our job and when we do that um I feel like it showed up today one more time you need a game like this um I feel like we kind of all as a whole offense kind of needed a game like this just to get momentum going on into the next week um you know it felt good we felt like we you know we're pushing the ball running the ball throwing the ball Derek Derek came out you know um we we expected him to play like that you know he's a great player and uh that's an expectation for himself um is to go out there and execute at a high level and that's exactly what he did when the play's giv you those kind of rollers you know is it on you to decide hey I'm going to field this or is there he tries to do this we want to field it roll another 20 how do you handle that yeah we kind of try to want to field every ball um you know it's important not to let the ball roll and you know try to get bad they they want the ball to roll to for us to get you know bad field position so um I just try to do my best to stay behind the ball um you know wasn't expecting you know the the ball to you know land that short but um I just tried to do my job and uh yeah it worked out on the one you got the reverse field would you you feel like you were going to score uh I should have I definitely should have but um you know it was a good play I was you know happy to get my offense in a good position on your touchdown were you worried that you were like were you worri you going to make it there you tri a little bit I was I was stumbling I did kind of uh I was looking for the goal line I dove and I was just happy that that the goal line was right there to get pass I sold that I I sold it I flopped a little bit just just just just a little bit um I saw the ball in the air I saw I wasn't going to get to it he kind of bumped me so I you know sold it to the best I could the rep through a flag and you know the rest was history did you feel the super help you out in that moment too for sure for sure I was looking around I was and I saw the flag everybody was screaming and yelling it definitely helped so shout out to fans did you get Payton any grief after the tackle how would you gra his tackle on the the one more time sorry did you get Payton any grief after the uh no no no that that was my fault I should have just kept running up the sideline and I tried to cut back but you know it wasn't there and uh just got tripped up but won't happen again I maybe it feels the same as it did during the preseason when you did but did did how did the kick return with new rules new setup and all that feel in in this environment yeah uh it was different different for sure definitely um you know uh got that out the way you know just just the feeling of you know this this new rule um but I feel like as a whole we executed um to the best of our ability and we did a good job I feel like we're going into tomorrow satisfied with how we did with that how we handled it um you on both sides kickoff and kick off return um yeah the overall game plan was great I feel like we we did a good job da said to us earlier the biggest thing after a game like this is keeping ground yes how much was that the message to you all yeah that was the the whole message um you know not a lot of games like like this um uh turn out to to be you know like this it's going to be a lot closer we're going to be a lot closer games um so it's just important that we move on next week you know enjoy this for the next 24 hours or so and then come Tuesday U we're back at it on Dallas and uh that that's the most important thing for us right now you and Derek had I mean even in the old offense pretty good chemistry on some of those long balls including in the opener I think the game theing play last year in the first game right on third down so when when you know that there's going to be an overhaul did was there ever before you really got into practicing it you ever wonder how that might affect your role and was it is it kind of a Rel to see that it can you can still be effective in the same way that you were last year in the new system uh yeah you know it's always you know a good feeling to be able to make the plays vertically down the field um I knew that I was going to get the the opportunities um you know the coaches know that that's you know kind of my strong suit I'm I um you know take the top off um any chance I get and um yeah I knew that it was going to be an important role in this offense and it's going to continue to be on on Long balls like that on kicks I mean you're kind of a unique guy CU you have to do both is it difficult with with the lights uh just a tiny bit just just a little bit but not too crazy the the the lights are still uh really bright but um it's it's not too bad I know the the big run get called back but had that stood you had you know group rushing yards earning yards and receiving yards is that is that what you want your game to always look like in terms of being multifaceted in that way yeah absolutely um you know the more you can do as a offense is always um you know important um you know that the Run game is going to open up the pass game and um you know we want to push the defense want to put pressure on them at at at all times and I felt like we did a great job of that today and um you know that's what this offense kind of keys on is is running the ball and and you know making the defense kind of think as as much as possible um and yeah like I said we did a good job of that and you know that's why it turned out the way it turned out so we're happy about it but we're on the next week what did you see from the receiving room you know just looking at them it looked like their defense was playing a lot off throughout the game was that something that you that you guys saw you knew that you were going to attack most of the game yes absolutely we knew that they were primarily a Zone team um not a ton of man coverage um we knew that their safties were going to come flying down on the run plays all types of stuff like that um and I feel like we did a great job of preparation throughout the week um to to know you know what the defense was going to do and um yeah turned out [Music] good thank you guys appreciate it a very happy post game very happy players and head coach Dennis Allen as they get their first win of the season start things off 1 and0 with the 4710 win over the Carolina Panthers it was an extremely complete game the offense started fast 17o and the first quarter and the defense they responded as well they forced three to takeaways two interceptions a force fumble and a fumble recovery then elante Taylor showed out with three sacks and yes he is still a cornerback he had three sacks in this one to Mario Davis with one and then special teams Blake groupy he went four of four from field goal with a long of 57 which is a career long for him so just all around great game by the Saints to open up this season next up going to Dallas for the Dallas Cowboys Scott what needs to carry over from this one I I I just think there's not all wins are created equal in this league it is hard to win and you see the The Smiling Faces the the lengthy postgame press conference they they should be talking a lot because it's you're hard pressed to go through this box score and to find anything that this team really struggled at today all three phases they play great now the thing about this league is it doesn't carry over next week you can't take points with you you can't take the successful Red Zone you can't take the takeaways with you you have to do that every single week and that's what's tough about it because you're going to face a good team you're going to find out how you play on the road with crowd noise now in your ear so different elements will be in introduced next week but I think the biggest thing you take away from this game and and yes it's a 24-hour rule but do not lose those Good Vibes and those good feelings that you have and the confidence take this confidence into the next week and that's how you snowball victories because it's hard to win in this league but you played one of the most perfect games that a lot of
