here's scott kaplan alex padilla and john browner hey great friends what's happening on a monday it's kaplan and crew on the radio on the mightier 1090 on our youtube stream where everybody's going to be talking about a lot of stuff that we're getting into today padres making moves meaning they're scapegoating somebody padres making moves as in their season is being flushed down the toilet lots of stadium fights from this past weekend that people are sending us and browner has introduced us to something called the hood olympics and the milk crate challenge which is going crazy and going viral so lots to get to plus some from this past preseason weekend um and just again so much i want to get into by the way i'll give you guys two quick recommendations i watched netflix malice in the palace great one-hour documentary the only thing was i thought it was a five-part documentary turns out it's like five different documentaries about things related to sports i thought it was five parts about malice in the palace i got done watching the first one like oh i can't wait to see what happens in the next one i can't find it turns out it's only one part that was great the christy martin documentary on netflix was amazing as well so if you guys haven't seen those yet check them out they're really really good so we are in the seven mile casino studios here with grande and the brown man and fellas i want you guys to jump right in right away because browner last week we asked you to bring some positivity talk us off the ledge i don't know what you're going to possibly say to us this week because the padres season has gone from hey well if the playoffs start today we're still in to now after losing two out of three to philadelphia this past weekend catching your breath today and then here come the dodgers tuesday wednesday thursday i don't know what else there is to say you know i've told this to you last week i've seen this movie before i saw the padres with a six and a half game lead back in 2010 or 11 lose 10 straight games and fizzle and not make it to the postseason they can hit right now they got no healthy pitching right now and i i really can't come up with anything positive to try and convince myself that something's going to get turned around in fact i'm kind of worried that not only did they lose two out of three to philly but here come the dodgers who were probably thinking to themselves these guys they got us earlier in the season they're pretty proud of themselves they're beating their chest they're talking big and now we get to come to their place we're on fire other than the game they lost yesterday to the mets and these guys are downtrodden let's go stick it to them if i'm dave roberts i mean that's my message let's go beat them down in their place by the way beat them down in their place in front of all of our fans because i don't know if the padre fans are going to show up this week or if it'll be all dodger fans so is there anybody here that can say anything positive about what is going on with the padres who by the way went from being in the playoffs and and being you know in the wild card position to losing and having cincinnati win in cincinnati overtaking so i'll defer to you guys can anybody come up with anything positive to say here nah nope nope nope nope nope you got to be look they have no pitching they literally have no pitching and so i thought that this was the whole coach him up situation but if a guy is hurt you can't get the right people to take them out you're going with lesser talent they're in a lot of trouble that [ __ ] be sinking and i don't think this is a situation where you start firing the general manager but somebody on the everyday staff has to go you got to save some face somewhere i don't think he should be the last person to go when the season's over you already know how i feel about the the current guy in charge on that bench he shouldn't have the job to begin with and he should be the first person to go win this season over hopefully it comes to an end after some postseason wins but if it doesn't he should be the first person to go because this team is playing uninspired baseball other than winning on saturday i think that was yeah other than winning on saturday the cronin worth home run and then the while pitching the extra innings they just don't they look lifeless man they look lifeless on the mound and at the plate and you just can't have that at this point in the season you just can't and so if you can't spark these guys from a from a manager saying i almost said head coach from a manager standpoint then what are you doing you're not there for strategy you're not there and you can't fire guys up what are you doing well you say that if they when the season ends hopefully after some postseason wins if they make it to the postseason and they get some wins tingler ain't going anywhere but today today the padres make a move somebody has to be fired somebody has to be scapegoated the fans want somebody to take responsibility for how this season has fallen apart the fans want somebody to take accountability for how this starting pitching staff hasn't performed has dealt with injuries but most importantly fans want somebody to be responsible for why the number one prospect in your system wasn't even pitching in aaa was being coached in arizona not not in games he was just being coached at their their spring training facility fans wanted somebody so the low hanging fruit the low man on the totem pole was padre's pitching coach larry rothschild he's the guy who takes the bobbit today and this is what the padre fans want they want somebody to be fired so the padre organization's like who's the easiest guy to fire here larry rothschild he's this year's padres scapegoat well you know nothing inspires a clubhouse like firing somebody you know every time i work somewhere and someone got fired the next day i was like yeah let's go baby john got fired let's go what pitch better not like john's the most generic name ever that's why so like all i'm saying is like if some like when john when browner got lego at 1090 do we all come in the next day but like you know what guys let's rally yeah there we go baby good thing we don't have brown or taking us down anymore i got the diversity out of here the cancer is gone can't wait to come in here and do a show now yeah like what's that going to do for you but you're right scott year after year it's uh the hitting coach and the hitting coach and the hitting coach because darren balzley had like the nine lives as the as the pitching coach forever as the pledges i'm sure is he going to come back now how does that where is he is darren balzley available now is that is that what's going on yeah and even if i first even if i came here and i told you that today that the padres fired damian easily you're gonna be like who's that like we have heard nothing about damien easley the hitting coach this entire year but yeah i mean somebody needed to go it wasn't going to be tingler in the middle of this it's definitely not going to be aj aj's going to be the general manager for the rest of our lives yep like so i i'm gonna ask the question now might as well just get it out of the way will the padres make the wild card because i don't see how they do it let's take a look let's let's let's go on wild card watch right now we used to be on division watch but that that ship sailed a long time ago i think i i saw the standings are like 13 games yeah here's wild card watch go for it well the dodgers have a nine and a half game lead over the reds now the reds are in the second wild card and the padres are now one game behind the cincinnati red two just came off a sweep of the marlins i believe now this week it is dodger week i remember the old chargers charger raider week it's raider week it's dodger week now the dodgers are coming to town and thankfully the reds actually play a very good team because we're all brewers fans this week right because that's where the reds are going for the next three games we're all brewers fans this is about like their only tough game that they have remaining on their schedule i think it's the pirates the entire month of september so browner i'm waiting for it man they play better against good teams here you go can't say it after this series if they don't right and by the way they play they play better against good teams philadelphia is a good team they still played like crap okay they played just like crap like they did against arizona like they did against colorado they came home they're playing a good team the sell job is hey they play better against good teams no they they really didn't play better and now here come the dodgers and like i said i'm going to go to the game on wednesday night and i really don't know what to expect on wednesday night because if you're a padres fan you've waited forever for late august and early september games to be meaningful and you've waited forever for petco park to be all padre fans and no dodger fans and now it's going to be tuesday wednesday thursday and i could see padre fans going like this well you know what this thing's over might as well put my tickets out there and make them available see if i can make a couple dollars off of them i wouldn't i wouldn't say this i wouldn't say that they're out of it so the energy right the energy will still be in the building they still have postseason uh opportunities in front of them they still control their own destiny what i will they're not four games out of the wild card they're a game behind a team that is that can be beat that can lose to pittsburgh so i don't i don't i don't want people thinking that it is over because it's not over and again once you get in the postseason one game playoff for seven game playoff you have a chance you have a chance it is an if it is an if but i i still like the if just where they are now it just it looks bad well where are they gonna be in a week right where are they gonna be in a week it's sports it's sports you don't know you never know well let me ask you a question you need to tell me that that you like your chances against walker bueller against max scherzer who who for the padres is going to pitch against those guys tbk again again what they can't hit and and now they're going to face the two best pitchers both guys who are cyan award candidates who leads the league and wins you do know he's coming back off the isle yeah you do know we have smoked both those guys this season yeah so this is not like when we said when you say oh we're up against this person this we've beat them but our offense are off that ain't the team anymore though but listen i'm answering his question yeah the the answer is they have beaten these guys scherzer gave up the grand slam to camarena okay made that kid in the lineup right it's just a hit right forget about pitching so that that fear is not that fear is not there the inability to agree the inability to pitch is the issue it's not that they've got these numbers going to the mound because we beat them you know where the fears at it's not looking at their opponent they could be playing anybody in baseball right now they're not scared of them their fear is in the mirror they're fearful of how terrible they're they're playing themselves there it doesn't matter who they're playing right now they the diamondbacks are they're they're baseball the diabetics are worse than baseball and they got did they get swept no they got three or four right the phillies are a playoff contender they lost two of three the rockies are a bad team good at home got swept it doesn't matter who they're playing because they are playing bad regardless of who they're playing so don't tell me about walker bueller max dude they are losing two guys and basically the on saturday night they're getting no hit through seven to austin nola's brother who i didn't even know had a brother in the league so it doesn't matter who they're playing let's see i'm talking about their opponent because right it doesn't matter who they're playing because by the way playing well scherzer last time they they roughed him up was playing for washington right and now he's coming in with the dodgers who are as on fire as anybody in baseball and that's the game that was eight nothing and mark grant and uh don or mud what's his name don arcillo yeah like they were so confident that they were gonna lose that game that they made a bet that they're going to walk from alpine to petco park like let's not act like they were destroying mack schurzer they're getting just they were getting destroyed and that they happened to have a lucky game slam diego showed up from a kid who had never played you know listen you can say to me all day long that they've already beaten these guys so they don't have any fear and i would say to you yeah very different ball club back then something has gone tragically wrong so last time it was a while ago so today the padres the padres fire their pitching coach somebody had to go the man somebody had to get fired right but he listen if they don't make the postseason this year i'm not joking around here i would very seriously be looking at aj preller wow they put because they had a lot of so much trust into this guy and it to me you know you you had ron fowler when he was the operating partner and now you've got peter seidler who's the operating partner and with ron not only did ron leave but some of his other people left and if you're peter i would look at at aj and i'd be saying to myself why have we put so much trust into this guy we let him decide on his manager because he didn't really need a manager because he really is the manager the manager is just the babysitter you know listen you're not going out and finding a bruce bochy type like a real hardcore baseball type guy to work for aj preller all i'm saying is is that treller's had a lot of time he's turned the padres from really bad too respectable he got super lucky with his one biggest move which was the james shields trade that brought back tatis other than that i mean look at some of these other guys i mean has got me machado to come play here okay because he because nobody because nobody was giving manny machado that kind of money will myers did a huge contract you signed eric hosmer to a huge contract everybody not everybody but all the pitching acquisitions that you've traded for have all basically gone down the toilet mike clevenger's hurt uh you dartmouth was hurt and not what we signed up for blake's no not what you signed up for uh adam frazier's been a massive disappointment since he got here so it's it's like the moves that he's making are all headline moves but are they panning out can you not and by the way mackenzie gore is supposed to be your number one prospect in your entire system and he's a total failure so my question to you guys is this are you telling me that aj preller is untouchable is he this great that he's untouchable when was it for me this is me this is my opinion yes because what were you before what were you before he started doing all that you weren't spending any money yeah it was a different ownership group this ownership group is going to come in peter schuler has already proven he's not afraid to make moves and i i wouldn't put it past him i really wouldn't if they fail to make the playoffs after having a seven game lead on the wild card at the trade deadline you have to make moves not just the pitching coach not just the hitting coach if you fail to make the playoffs jace tingler's the first one to go and you have to evaluate and you have to evaluate aj preller you have to i'm not saying that i'm not saying that you don't evaluate him because i believe that you should everyone should be evaluated when you have a collapse of this magnitude happening but again some of the things that i believe that are wrong with this team are fixable coaching issues i think the three of us are under the assumption if they don't make the playoffs tingler's gone if he comes back if he comes back after this collapse then that's then you're really not really that trying that much that hard then you're then at that point you do fire prayer because at this point now he's trying to have somebody in front of him so he doesn't get so he doesn't get the negative attention the padres have refused to hire a real big league manager they hired andy green because he was an easy controllable inexpensive guy and now they've hired jace tingler because he's also inexpensive and totally controllable so let me ask let me ask both of y'all a question they've never had it they've never had a team like this before you know what the possibilities are there are the chargers oh stop it no no he's right they have tom celeste tom telesco has been the gm the same amount of time aj probably has been the gm they haven't won squat are they a respectable squad sure do they have superstars sure but do they keep hiring no name yes men as their head coach yes i'm not telling you that peter sciler is dean spanos i'm telling you that they are aligned when it comes to gm coach it actually i don't know why you make your head like that you're a charger fan yeah really la brown it gets to a point where you like start to do this you start you start going like this um i'm confusing the chargers and the padres i saw a tweet from hacksaw who is always offering me the opportunity for him to guest on the show if you want to talk about sports and you want to talk about sports radio in the old days i'm willing to come on the show and i'm like nah nah we don't really know actually but saw put out a tweet i don't know if you guys saw this or not saw put out a tweet where he asked who should be blamed for the chargers failures or the chargers collapse and it was like injuries to the pitching staff oh here it is right here alex can you read it hacksaw's mini poll charger season collapsing badly what bothers you the most about what you see with an ankle injury but they were able to make some key adjustments in the second half to come out with the win in the third quarter with the game knotted at seven the saints came out and had a strong scoring drive but missed the extra point just before the fourth quarter el camino put together a solid drive of their own to edge ahead 14 to 13. the wildcats sealed the deal after an let's let's go on wild card watch right now we used to be on division watch but that that ship sailed a long time ago i think i i saw the standings are they 13 games yeah here's wild card watch go for it well the dodgers have a nine and a half game lead over the reds now the reds are in the second wild card and the padres are now one game behind the cincinnati reds who just came off a sweep of the marlins i believe now this week it is dodger week i remember the old charger of the charger raider week it's raider week it's dodger week now the dodgers are coming to town and thankfully the reds actually play a very good team because we're all brewers fans this week right because that's where the reds are going for the next three games we're all brewers fans this is about like their only tough game that they have remaining on their schedule i think it's the pirates the entire month of september so browner i'm waiting for it man they play better against good teams here you go can't say it after this series if they don't right and by the way they play they play better against good teams philadelphia is a good team they still played like crap okay they played just like crap like they did against arizona like they did against colorado they came home they're playing a good team the sell job is hey they play better against good teams no they they really didn't play better and now here come the dodgers and like i said i'm gonna go to the game on wednesday night and i really don't know what to expect on wednesday night because if you're a padres fan you've waited forever for late august and early september games to be meaningful and you've waited forever for petco park to be all padre fans and no dodger fans and now it's going to be tuesday wednesday thursday and i could see padre fans going like this well you know what this thing's over might as well put my tickets out there and make them available see if i can make a couple dollars off of them i wouldn't i wouldn't say this i wouldn't say that they're out of it so the energy right the energy will still be in the building they still have postseason uh opportunities in front of them they still control their own destiny what i will they're not four games out of the wild card they're a game behind a team that is that can be beat that can lose to pittsburgh so i don't i don't i don't want people thinking that it is over because it's not over and again once you get in the postseason one game playoff for seven game playoff you have a chance you have a chance and it is an if it is an if but i i still like the if just where they are now it just it looks bad well where are they gonna be in a week right where are they going to be in a week it's sports it's sports you don't know you never know well let me ask you a question you mean to tell me that you like your chances against walker bueller against max scherzer who who for the padres is going to pitch against those guys again again again what they can't hit and and now they're going to face the two best pitchers both guys who are sai young award candidates who leads the league and wins you do know coming back off the isl you do know we have smoked both those guys this season yeah so this is not like when we said when you say oh we're up against this person we've beat them but our offense are awesome that ain't the team anymore though but listen i'm answering his question yeah the the answer is they have beaten these guys scherzer gave up the grand slam to camarena okay made that kid in the lineup right it's just a hit right so forget about pitching so that that fear is not that fear is not there the inability to agree the inability to pitch is the issue it's not that they've got these going to the mound because we've beat them you know where the fears at it's not looking at their opponent they could be playing anybody in baseball right now they're not scared of them their fear is in the mirror they're fearful of how terrible they're they're playing themselves there it doesn't matter who they're playing right now they the diamondbacks are they're going to be true baseball the diabetics are worse than baseball and they got did they get swept no they got three or four right the phillies are a playoff contender they lost two of three the rockies are a bad team good at home got swept it doesn't matter who they're playing because they are playing bad regardless of who they're playing so don't tell me about walker bueller max dude they are losing two guys and basically the on saturday night they're getting no hit through seven to austin nola's brother who i didn't even know had a brother in the league so it doesn't matter who they're playing let's see i'm not talking about their opponent because right it doesn't matter who they're playing because they're by the way playing well scherzer last time they they roughed him up was playing for washington right and now he's coming in with the dodgers who are as on fire as anybody in baseball and that's the game that was eight nothing and mark grant and uh don or mud what's his name don arcillo like they were so confident that they were gonna lose that game that they made a bet that they're gonna walk from alpine to petco park like let's not act like they were destroying max scherzer they're getting just they were getting destroyed and they happened to have a lucky game slam diego showed up from a kid who had never played you know listen you can say to me all day long that they've already beaten these guys so they don't have any fear and i would say to you yeah very different ball club back then something has gone tragically wrong so last time it was a while ago so today the padres the padres fire their pitching coach somebody had to go the man somebody had to get fired right but listen if they don't make the postseason this year i'm not joking around here i would very seriously be looking at aj preller wow because they had a lot of so much trust into this guy and it to me you know you you had ron fowler when he was the operating partner and now you've got peter seidler who's the operating partner and with ron not only did ron leave but some of his other people left and if you're peter i would look at at aj and i'd be saying to myself why have we put so much trust into this guy we let him decide on his manager because he didn't really need a manager because he really is the manager the manager is just the babysitter you know listen you're not going out and finding a bruce bochie type like a real hardcore baseball type guy to work for aj preller all i'm saying is is that preller's had a lot of time he's turned the padres from really bad too respectable he got super lucky with his one biggest move which was the james shields trade that brought back tatis other than that i mean look at some of these other guys i mean has got manny machado to come play here okay because he because nobody because nobody was giving manny machado that kind of money will myers to a huge contract you signed eric hosmer to a huge contract everybody not everybody but all the pitching acquisitions that you've traded for have all basically gone down the toilet mike clevenger's hurt all right uh you don't have her and not what we signed up for blake's no not what you signed up for uh adam frazier has been a massive disappointment since he got here so it's it's like the moves that he's making are all headline moves but are they panning out can you n and by the way mackenzie gore is supposed to be your number one prospect in your entire system and he's a total failure so my question to you guys is this are you telling me that aj preller is untouchable is he this great that he's untouchable when was it for me this is me this is my opinion yes because what were you prefer what were you before he started doing all that you weren't spending any money yeah it was a different ownership group this ownership group is going to come in and peter seidler's already proven he's not afraid to make moves and i i wouldn't put it past him i really wouldn't if they fail to make the playoffs after having a seven game lead on the wild card at the trade deadline you have to make moves not just a pitching coach not just the hitting coach but if you fail to make the playoffs jace tingler's the first one to go and you have to evaluate and you have to evaluate aj perler you have to i'm not saying that i'm not saying you don't evaluate him because i believe that you should everyone should be evaluated when you have a collapse of this magnitude happening but again some of the things that i believe that are wrong with this team are fixable coaching issues i think the three of us are under the assumption if they don't make the playoffs tingler's gone if he comes back if he comes back after this collapse then that's then you're really not really that trying that much that hard all right then you're then at that point you do fire prayer because at this point now he's trying to have somebody in front of him so he doesn't get so he doesn't get the negative attention the padres have refused to hire a real big league manager they hired andy green because he was an easy controllable inexpensive guy and now they've hired jace tingler because he's also and totally inexpensively so let me ask let me ask you all a question they've never had it they've never had a team like this before you know what the possibilities are they're the chargers oh stop it no no he's right they have to has been the gm the same amount of time aj peller's been to gm they haven't won squat are they a respectable squad sure do they have superstars sure but do they keep hiring no name yes men as their head coach yes i'm not telling you that peter seidler is dean spanos i'm telling you that they are aligned when it comes to gm coach it actually i don't know why you make your head like that you're a charger fan yeah really la brown it gets
