Lions OFFICIALLY Have A #1 CB? SPLASH TRADE: Carlton Davis III Breakdown

Intro what is up everybody welcome back to another video in today's video we are back with another breakdown video for the Detroit Lions and as you guys can see we're not at the usual spot for this video but that's okay usually we don't have anything going on in the background anyway so hopefully the quality you know checks out here the voice thing might be better cuz for whatever reason when I do this from the studio my voice thing is always messed up at the beginning today we're doing another breakdown video but this one's also going to be unique in the sense that we're not talking about a draft pick or a free agent signing but instead a player of the Lance acquired via the trade market so let's get it started welcome everybody to video glad Who is Davis you guys are here and yes we're back with another breakdown video for the line I've been really excited to just dive into and I've kind of on and off watched the player just random Clips saved them like o I like that watch them against Justin Jefferson I like that aspect but I've never really dove into it fully did the video well it's that time now let's do the video for Carlton Davis of course we're going to do a quick little background on who is Carlton Davis well this is the cornerback the Lions acquired this off season it was the Big Splash that the Lions made now I don't think it was a surprise to a ton of us that the Lions actually went out and traded for a player we had a lot of discussions about the Lions potentially getting into the trade market especially for the quarterback position just because of the class that was available it just seemed like it would make sense to maybe go that route instead and that's the route the Lions went however going with Carlton Davis was not a guy that we had talked about very much at all however Carlton Davis did do his thing against the Detroit Lions both times he played the lions in the playoff game and during the regular season we were in in Tampa we won both of those games but he handled business both times we played that team so I can just think back to his introductory pressor when he was kind of put on the spot well like what game should we look at it's like yo just go watch him play the Lions okay he played really well against us in both of those games and he dealt with Aman Rous and brown in a lot of matchups in both of those games we add Carlton Davis with a final year on his contract the 27y old corner I didn't even realize he was that young 27y old Corner former second round pick third pick in the second round it was a late third round pick that the Lions gave up to Carlton Davis and we can talk about whether or not it's worth giving up that pick to add this type of player but I think the best way to do that is just specifically talk about the player and what I think he's going to bring to the table now it is an interesting setup because he is on the final year of his contract it's a little bit higher in capid as we know the Lions restructure that deal they have dead cap going in the next season so we'll have to see if the Lions maybe want to adjust that try to bring him back so is it worth giving up a third round pick well I think some of that would depend on if he gets brought back I mean that can say a lot of things if he's not brought back that doesn't doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't worth it if he balls out this season but all these new quarterbacks that the Lions added hey they're the guys they're next up and he wants to go get big money elsewhere I would say that ends up being worth it especially if we hit our ultimate goal which is winning the Super Bowl who really cares about giving up a late third round pick the LA Rams will say something about that but that being said we still were able to address the cornerback position with back-to-back picks in the draft so it's not like the lions giving up that pick kept them from adding a corner first thing that I want to start off here with Carlton Davis of course doing a quick little background who is carlt Davis looking at his size 6'1 Corner over 200 lb I want to start off with some of the statistics here because statistically he's coming off of one of his worst seasons according to Pro Football Focus we'll go through the numbers here in a second and he also as we know has a pretty deep injury history you can just anticipate that he's going to miss some time he's dealt with a lot of different types of injuries missing 16 of the last 51 games so that'll be a huge aspect too is like hey is he on the field which honestly kind of works out weirdly pretty well for the liance because a lot of times they sign players that have super high upside yet they have injury backgrounds and they'll sign them on a one-year deal this is I guess similar in that way statistics don't always show like hey he's at top your corner sometimes the stats don't tell the whole story who's getting the number one matchup is he aligning in the spot that the quarterback's going to throw the ball the most like he talked about in his introductory press conference like hey some quarterbacks like to go to the right side of the field that's where I'm going to line up opposing team's number one receiver not just in the past but also just this past season against the Buffalo Bills you see him kind of following around Stefon Diggs you see it against Minnesota first week of the Season at time sticking with Justin Jefferson now he did play usually one half of the field as a left cornerback he did move around from what we've seen he's played different matchups and especially when you go into some of those man situations defensively at times we' see him kick down in the slot we've seen it against al St Brown he would take St Brown oneon-one so we've seen this guy move around and play that number one quarterback role we've even heard other coaches talk about how Carlton Davis is usually the guy that teams tend to not want to necessarily pick on that's usually where they stay away with the football that being said though I think what stands out about the numbers is if you look at it as a whole from 2023 they're not necessarily great like I said one of his worst statistical Seasons the completion percentage AOW was 64.6% that's a pretty big jump from the year before five touchdowns two interceptions a 107.4 pass rating 776 yards it's not completely awful but it's not great however what stood out to me is when you started to look at the man coverage statistics according to Pro Football Focus over the last couple of Seasons we know that's what the Lions want to get back to in the sense of as Dan Campbell La it out like that's kind of the Run game offensively for them is the ability to just play Man coverage I also think and I know we' talked about this so many times I always used the pack as an example I think it's a great example first half vers second half Jordan love when we played them at home they beat us on Thanksgiving he was nearly 50% completion percentage against man coverage and he was nearly perfect against Zone coverage in that game having that ability to kind of sit in the man coverage which clearly the Lions and Aron Glen want to do something they want to get back to and I think when you just look at the man covered splits again according to PFF and I say that because there is a number missing here they say he allowed five touchdowns this past season four of those in zone coverage zero in man coverage I'm like okay I don't know what the coverage was maybe they like said goal line coverage is something different I don't know exactly what they missed there you just look at their man coverage splits over the past three seasons in 2023 he allowed a 53% completion percentage 66.7 pass rating five pack pass breakups and zero touchdowns in man coverage this past season compared to Zone 70% second pleas percentage 122 pass rating four touchdowns of what PFF had him with then you go back to season 2022 in man coverage he allowed eight receptions on 29 targets I thought that number was F was that is a 27.6% completion percentage obviously most teams play more Zone Tampa Bay plays more Zone than man coverage most teams do now so you're going to have a larger sample size to look at with Zone coverage but I do think that is necessary to see that that's an insane statistic to have in 2022 allowing a 43.6 pass rating and even if you go back to 2021 50% Le percentage 92 pass ring allowed and two touchdowns in man coverage so just looking at the last threee of sample size he's been pretty big time when he's in man coverage just statistics alone forget about even watching the player now let's dive into watching the player and of course my focus was on this past season in 2023 and just going through those games not a freakish athlete coming out of the draft did have good size has really good length nearly 33 in arms which is massive for a quarterback and you see a lot of success especially when he jams scrimmage is a place that I love of his impressed situations he loves to use physicality sometimes to his detriment all right he does get pretty handsy especially at the top of the route and you'll get too many flags called defensively some of them more egregious than others but we know in the NFL like you get handsy they they can just call defensive holding now is going up you look at some of the numbers that he posted 16 bench rest reps which is pretty solid coming out of the draft the broad jump was pretty good 34in vertical in a 45340 not amazing there that's actually a little bit slower than both enus rraw and Teran R A 4551 and a 450 with a 156 10 yard split not the fastest quarterback or more explo most explosive quarterback but athleticism just isn't testing scores it's also something that you could see it's the flexibility that the player carries as well and of course the most important thing is play speed versus 40 time speed we know that is the world of difference there we talked about that with Teran Arnold because for whatever reason people were worried about that go check out the tan Arnold video but let's get into this thing I got to dive into this because we've been Reactive athleticism sitting here for a while but I will say this last statistic is in the playoffs this season of course it was only two play two games he allowed six receptions on 11 targets for 67.2 pass ring so I thought at least point that out because his stats are just based on the regular season all right let's dive into this let's start with the reactive athleticism now this ties in kind of to what I just said about some of the testing scores this scario where I gave him an average grade this is something I'm going to talk about throughout the entire video but where I think Carlon Davis really thrives is within the footwork it's within the balance that he plays with the consistent base width that he plays with the limited amount of lunging that you get especially in press positions and his ability to quickly mirror footwork It's ability to recover his footwork quickly and not get into tough positions where he can't recover I think he allows him to play a lot faster when you see certain things like that you see the ability to turn tight Corners especially in the back of the end zone you'll see that a lot like in goal line situations when he's kind of just tracing a receiver from a trail position that's one aspect that's one of the most impressive when you talk about reactive athleticism for him to get into a trail position and kind of just Trace with the receiver from beneath the route that's where you see some of that flexibility but also the control he also has a really good ability to get into his strides pretty quickly that's going to fit a little bit more into play speed but as much as that 10 yard split doesn't blow you away he very quickly opens up his strides so he actually does show some ability to kind of get out and get going pretty quickly with really controlled footwork at the top of the route we're going to talk about that control a lot in this video they kind of limit his steps at the top of the route you'll see it on curls you'll see it on comebacks you'll see it an off coverage you see when he's in Phase now double SNS of routes can be a little bit of an issue so we've seen our guys run this at times where maybe it's like a double Crow out where they kind of sink and then get out of it then sink again that can give him some issues he tends to kind of rise and his Pad level pops up a little bit throughout the rep we'll talk about that a little bit more that can lead to some issues reactively his closing burst specifically especially when you're talking about downhill the pl and drive short area twitch is also lacking a little bit a little bit below average here as well you'll especially see this on like level one routes one thing that is pretty well known with Carlton Davis is more success against bigger receivers less success against the smaller slot twitcher type of receivers and that kind of makes sense to his style one thing that you'll notice about Carlton Davis he's very anticipation heavy but again he also plays really well into his footwork and that miring ability in that control so when things kind of get out of control a little bit that's where you see some issues pad levels type of Rise his weight starts to kind of shift all of a sudden he creates space once you get a little bit deeper downfield against some of the smaller receivers or if he guesses maybe wrong he tries to get a little bit ProActive at the top of the route gets in a position where it's not great especially against some of the smaller receivers that can kind of get in and out in and out really well like khie Raymond that can creat some separation issues as well at the top of routes some of the bigger receivers don't give that usually when they start to give into that tell that's the direction that they're going and that's where Carlton Davis seems to kind of Thrive he's also a little bit delayed to kind of switch off routes this will come back a little bit more to some of the FBI maybe but with that being said I think he carries situational awareness but there is a real delay switching off rout some of that is opening the hips and recovering in those spots but there are plenty of examples where you'll see teams kind of just run them out of the play also some of that to me is what the coverage technique is off man versus cover three by playing half turn for example like if he's playing cover three like hey are his eyes more towards the quarterback now and he's has his vision there and that's where it's set this is off man where maybe he's watching the receiver watching the route development and when he's not watching the route development that's where you get him pulled out of plays like on cover three and then they'll run things underneath like they'll run a you know deep post and a deep Crosser underneath it and all of a sudden he gets pulled out by the Deep post he doesn't give it off to the safety fast enough and there's a gaping hole you will see things like that pop up what he does really well back to the control aspect half turn pacing you'll Play speed see that that's not something that's going to be incredible to you is some of just the natural reactive athleticism that he brings however the play speed to me was a plus I won't hit on a ton of notes here but I think that he has plus play speed plays faster than maybe some of that 40 time to me again anticipation route development awareness we'll see on speed outs when he gets good breaks in those spots some of the anticipation just jump on routes like hey this looks like a screen I might jump this then he'll come up with an interception I think he plays a lot faster because of aspects like that and then also the ability to kind of just stride in coverage open it up pretty quickly that being said though he definitely can get vertically stacked and we will see that his hand he can get a little bit handsy in coverage as well I think some of that comes back to some of the play speed especially in a trail position when he's opening up his strides he's also not keeping his Pad level down throughout the rep because he's not in phase and he doesn't have much control on the receiver in those spots he's just trying to play catchup so all of a sudden he gets a little bit handsy at times I think gets handsy when he doesn't necessarily need to that can kind of pop up to me sometimes just from you know some of the natural recovery ability some of the play speed that he actually does bring I love the pacing that he plays with though especially in like two man cover that control that he will play with and then that moves you over to the ball skills now this was an area that I was a little bit in between where exactly I want to put him here we know historically statistically he's not known for coming up with a ton of interceptions versus how many times he actually gets his hands on his football now to me on the football now to me I'm definitely okay with the guy that just gets his hands on the football a ton and I think what's huge about this is the ability to get your hands on the football but also do that in man coverage it's a different skill set to get your hands on the football in man coverage versus Zone coverage or sometimes you're just lurking in zone spots getting hands and man coverage on the football while you're also trying to stay in Phase with the route especially from a press position completely different game you know a lot of times you say well if I go to Zone I keep my eyes on the quarterback I could take the football away and to me where his ball skill shines is the amount of times that he can get his hands on the ball while also sticking in man covered sticking in Phase with the route and a lot of that comes back to the length that he brings to the table but also that ability to High Point some of the timing and that controll aggression that he plays with especially when you see it downhill like on screens for example not running himself out of the play he high points well at the catch Point kind of just rips the ball one thing I don't love here is I do feel like occasionally he can give up his blind spot a little bit too much especially when he starts to declare his hips back inside they break outside or he gives up his blind spot and he doesn't carry some of that recovery whether that be twitch also recovery in the hips to kind of completely one 180 open himself back up and get out to the blind spot sometimes I think he just leaves a little bit too much room in those spots has shown glimpses of nice underhand technique and some of the focus to finish in those spots and come up with interceptions and also I like how he uses his length correctly which arm to utilize at the catch Point like inside arm that way I can get more length get my body into it a little bit I do see that aspect what sets a lot of that up is just the route anticipation the route development awareness kind of getting a sense for where the route is going I think you also see this off the press a lot as well too is his ability to just kind of get ahead of the release where he kind of gets a sense based on kind of that first step by the receiver the single step whatever that may be where the release is going and he gets on top of the play he plays very anticipation heavy you get that same thing down the field as well again I talked about kind of the speed outbreaks he's really well built for bigger receivers but also tight ends as well anytime he gets a tight end match up you just feel good about how that match up is going to go that's an effect of piece to have the lions are don't have the biggest quarterbacks right now so to add a guy that definitely brings that size it's a little bit unique okay it's not easy to find guys that can play press covers but also be big in size as well and bring a lot of size to the table usually those two things can be a little bit tricky to find together so it's a unique Dynamic type of player that you're getting in that sense that you added here because the Lions don't carry a ton of Siz at that cornerback position right now they haven't carried a ton of size there and you get some of that here with Carl to Davis but also proven success which we'll talk about in some of the press category he undercuts crossers that's back to some of the anticipation the long speed understanding the route development like this is a Crosser let me try to run underneath this routes even if it's not always successful he plays through the wide receiver well especially in Fades he plays through the receiver well uh he's really tricky in those spots where gets into a vertical stem or gets into a fade route and he can just kind of play through your body get in your chest and utilize his phys physicality and his length at the catch point he lives for those moments seemingly now I don't think his positioning is always great at the catch point I think that can be a little bit inconsistent when contesting the football and also utilizing that physicality to his best ability I think could be a little bit inconsistent but that's something that he does really well is take away kind of there those vertical routes down the sideline now moving on to some of these different coverage aspects that he plays in we'll Press coverage start with the one that I like the most and of course that's going to be press coverage here now just by the way that he's built should be built really well play press coverage but then it also goes back to where is the footwork and again for a guy at this size to play with the kind of control that he can off the line of scrimmage but also the awareness off of the line of scrimmage and not consistently fall behind routes occasionally you'll see it single step release Speed release will fall behind a little bit be a little bit delayed weight will shift splitting his feet that kind of thing but for the most part also his ability to technically mix up his footwork at the line of scrimmage and not as much to me I didn't see this much from a jam perspective I thought that was just pretty consistent in general but it was more so about his ability to mirror it to to the receiver mirroring footwork of a receiver super impressive for a guy at this size so whether that you know depending on what release the receiver went into his ability to mirror a footwork pattern for that defensively to stay in front of the route I thought that was huge just to have some versatility there the ankle flexion is huge here you'll see a lot of flexibility within the lower body again he doesn't always sit sit down in the chair throughout the rep that could be a little bit hit and miss depending on whether or not he's able to stick and phas through the prast he can set a lot of things up for him however he shows a lot of flexibility wi in these spots to minimize foot he rarely oversteps rarely lunges the only time I feel like he can kind of lunge a little bit is when he's trying to go for a jam and get contact when he does not get contact in those spots the receiver gets a little bit far away from him that can throw him off a little bit but in terms of the footwork you don't see him lunge very often and usually very accurate within that first step that fall step it's not always the the same look as a quarterback where it's the same fall step now I'm into my set it's different and he can adapt to like I said what the receiver is doing plays with balance in his Jam attempts as I touched on he got lunging constantly now where he gets into issues is when he gets tall at the top of the route when he starts to kind of overplay the route where he gets in a spot where he's kind of just running past the route receivers kind of sink it down we saw it get Sanford sink it down run a dig route underneath not only does he get a little bit too far on top of the route but again his pads kind of Rise so when he gets in those spot he's trying to stay in Phase all of a sudden if he gets into a spot where he starts to lean over the route a little bit too much where he's not in your hip and he's not staying low on the play or maybe he's dealing with like a lot of speed or kind of that shiftiness now that's where create that separation at the top of the route and you'll see things like that kind of pop up as the route goes on a lot of it comes back to the consistency and the success that it carries I also think he does a really nice job with leverage like if I have outside leverage do I have inside leverage being able to maintain that leverage he did a really good job against amaras St Brown when he was pressed up now St Brown again not the shiftiest receiver however St Brown is very crafty within his release package he sells it really well and we know he's very strong so he even made a really tough grab against Carlton Davis where just threw the contact he just took it away that being said though St Brown is not necessarily the most Shifty receiver and even against a guy that was super nuanced in St Brown he was able to handle his business pretty well against St Brown when impressed because of his ability to maintain what leverage do I have but also then play with a lot of balance and a lot of control utilize my length and then that flexion to really transition get out of the press turn and run in some of those spots but also not just kind of opening the gate he doesn't just open the gate he doesn't just declare his hips at the line of scrimmage immediately when in press situation so he really could open himself up to handle a three way go and that opens up the flexibility to align in the slot depending on the matchup that you have there as I touched on he can fall behind versus single step releases you'll see that skip releases for example but his ability to trace and Trail is huge especially when he loses relief like release like we saw against San Francisco he has a nice ability to quickly get into stride so you'll see this against drag routes his ability to usually stay in a pretty good spot even if he is laate off the line of scrimmage to again kind of quickly get into that stride open himself up turn and run drag routes crossers those kind of things where they immediately kind of just break underneath what I like here though is the versatility we saw it against Indie for example handling the stutter stutter release off on a scrimmage as I touched on though where you get things that get a little spotty is where you get extra footwork his weight typically tends to shift off the line of scrimmage maybe he's splitting his feet maybe he anticipates to release wrong and as it gets a shift a receiver that kind of throws him off balance a little bit that's where you get some spotty balance and it kind of gets into extra footwork it slows him down limits his reactive quickness in some of those spots and then also giving up space level one giving up space underneath specifically when he starts to kind of look for contact in his jam and really try to press off the line of scrimmage but he's only able to get connection cleanly there are spots where he ends up giving up kind of Separation because he's not getting his footwork along with it but you do see real press transitions as well so for me it's a very versatile press corner and because of that I really like him in his category I think he's pushing a great grade here I think this is the most consistent area that I saw him but to be honest I really liked him across the board in coverage I think he's had a lot of Versatility cover four cover two cover I mean you've played all these different Zone coverage looks we've seen him in Offman coverage we've seen him in press coverage we've seen him situationally so I think the fact that he's played a lot of different looks is very helpful coming to the Lions also being a part of a defense that's not afraid to Blitz move a lot of things around in the back end you have a lot of creativity from we saw against Tampa I can remember we were preparing for Tampa it was like yo there's a lot of movement don't really always know where the blitz is coming from there's a lot of movement in the back end now we took advantage of that sometimes but having that can be very helpful I think from the quarterback position just adding any piece like that to the secondary when you talk about Offman covers there's things I like things that I clearly don't like here things that I like first off he mirrors the footwork at the top of the route I do like that his ability to mirror footwork again he really anticipation heavy you'll see it in his hips where he start to kind of open or kind of weave his hips on top of the route constantly sticking on top of the routes Offman coverage specifically Offman coverage uh where he could like s stick on top of a tight end now he doesn't have a great weave within his pedal so you're not going to have a ton of success there and kind of just weaving back and forth in and out again this is where safety receivers become an issue because he's waiting for the action to come to him and if he gets a little bit thrown off he can be a little bit delayed in in his responsiveness or if a receiver does really a job with discipline where they get to the top of the route and they're not leaning One Direction and they don't lean into their route break and they just stay vertical and then they break in or out and he doesn't get a great sense on where that's going to go then you get delayed reactiveness and all of a sudden they're you know they're catching out tight tight ends are count catching out routes for a touchdown on him or you get him a step slow and he's not in a spot to actually make a play on the football that's where things like that will pop up in offb coverage that being said though he does a really nice job reading the body language anticipating starting to kind of roll his hips and when he rolls his hips plays very leverag can kind of sit himself down break on top of the route but specifically that ability to mirror his footwork at the top of the route limit his footwork really well curls comebacks sitting on top of routes the ability to kind of mirror up and you'll see him kind of match his footwork with the receiver and then dive explosive hips throughout the transitions which we'll talk about opens up a lot of capabilities there opens up a lot of success breaking on the football drop his weight in anticipation as I touched on which is necessary because again he can kind of play a little bit High especially in space you'll kind of at times just see him start to kind of stand up also you'll see it on top of Route breaks where like we saw it against Stefon Diggs where hey the route break happens and he kind of Pops himself up and then as the play gets extended it's like oh snap now he's going to lose the route doesn't have some of that recovery athleticism now you give up a reception you'll see things like that where the r will kind of pop up so dropping his weight and anticipation can't help in the spot one thing that I had noted early was that he would get pushed in a half turn a little bit early and I think that can happen occasionally but for the most part I thought he was actually pretty accurate when he was getting in a half turn right going from a pedal to half turn because again he's not extremely great at just weaving the route so some of those shif three receivers are in and out he's not going to be able to just mirror match back and forth he's going to kind of want to lean into it open in a half turn and then break out of that I thought he was actually pretty successful getting in a half turn it was just getting in a half turn and then breaking and then all of a sudden if it became a double move now you give up a touchdown like he did against the Houston Texans but I actually thought he did pretty well when he was put in a half turn situation Al very reactive wide receiver eyes and where I think Offman coverage can help him is that he can be a little bit more route development aware we'll see true Vision when he's in coverage between quarterback and reading this van but I think in Offman coverage he can lean a little bit more into kind of anticipating the route development and that's you'll find success and he also picks up on Tendencies where if he sees something the same time twice all of a sudden you get better success sing the same route twice from the same kind of coverage look look back to the control aspect he tends to Pace himself really well and his ability to stick in Phase especially from some of those HAL turn looks and he's able to read the route sync So reading breaks reading curls against bigger receivers especially because again they're usually trying to drop their weight to sit or maybe they'll rise we saw it against Indie kind of just ate it up receiver sitting at the top of the route he could just read that like a mile away that it was coming he's able to just step on those routes some of the wall receivers can be a little bit more difficult to anticipate now you get into more of the reactive game versus the anticipation all of a sudden that's where you get a little bit less consistency but it gets bigger receivers than off man coverage his ability to kind of read the sink read the break that's where you get success within his game now over to the Zone coverage Zone coverage aspect this is something that honestly kind of that grew on me as I watched him I didn't maybe love it early but the amount of reps that I think that he played in zone coverage the amount of Versatility I think he showed in zone coverage gave me a much more much better feeling about what he's actually capable of doing in zone coverage and there's real ways that he has success here one of the biggest things is that I think technically speaking he's very sound in terms of getting proper depth also understanding Trust assignments understanding like hey you have underneath I got to pass this off one of the things that I love most about Zone coverage is the trust that he has that everybody's going to do their job like hey I'm not going to overplay a route just because I see the guy Breaking Inside like hey his quarter safe you got to dive on that I'm passing this off I'm going to trust you to do that he will not just overplay routes into some else's Zone that's one of my favorite aspects about Zone coverage it's one of the reasons I gave him a higher grade here maybe I initially expected coming into this see that kind of awareness specifically like in cover three situations who has underneath you got the flat I'm playing over top in spots like this now the biggest issue you'll see in cover three is when he gets pulled out of plays because again they'll run routes to kind of just pull them out of the play reading a little bit more of the quarterback in these spots reading the drop maybe not focusing on the route development and then just kind of staying with the route in like his peripheral vision then all of a sudden he gets pulled out of the play and they set up big chunk plays that will happen we've seen scheme beaters happen probably too consistently against him where you just don't see enough of like anticipating okay he's just pulling out of the play let me drop this off it's too late big big gaping holes get created because all of a sudden he's just playing The Zone coverage and all of a sudden Zone coverage can be beat they can be set up on paper and that allows him he allows that to happen too often a really nice cover four Communicator as well between safeties and the underneath coverage you'll see the cover three eyes over top in coverage and as I touched on The Leverage body control becomes huge winning cover four winning cover three the ability to play leverage and that allows himself to quickly get down and break on the football where you get some issues is one thing drifting one thing I thought would pop up as well in cover three was just drifting a little bit too deep in coverage and then not allowing himself to plant and drive and actually get back to the play CU that's not an area where he's going to thrive is that plant and drve burst uh he does play with really good depth in zone coverage as I touched on this is consistent this shows up to me the most in cover two spots we saw that against Houston because it's ability to hey there's no one underneath let me break over and take this corner right away saw it against the Lions Kida came out in the flat and all of a sudden he's playing that in between two-man game he trusts his length of ton now I think that could get him the problems at times because he gives just too much room where he's giving too much room to the level one guy and I don't think sometimes he has that reactive ability where if the ball just went to the flat where he'd actually be able to get there as quick as he think that he could he could transition that fast and then he gets a little bit upright and that's where I could really see issues pop up occasionally he constantly plays with death but I think at times he gives too much space he's not like Brian Branch where he's going to kind of like just squeeze the route and take it away in zone coverage where it's like hey this is underneath safety took the corner outout I'm taking away the flat he doesn't play like that or cidd Duce would do that he's going to play a little B more of the in between game and he's going to tend to play with a little bit more depth and taking making sure that he's playing the in between trusting his length to be effective in those spots rather than saying I'm going to squeeze and take away one route Awareness really close off airspace it hasn't seem to bite him a ton it is something that I think though occasionally absolutely could bite him more often than maybe it even showed in cover three what I like about the awareness here again taking away seams very understanding of the coverage type so it's the same thing of like I'm going pass all my teammate you got that it's like I'm going to cover three there's a scene beater Okay boom they're trying to attack me here quickly getting over top for the scene at times you'll get lapses of awareness in coverage where it's like okay I don't know why he's really focused on this guy that would move me on to the Run support which is again kind of a weird one because obviously the injury physical that maybe he was in the past to me I still see good physicality there um he's not great in run in run support I don't think he's excellent in the open field way too often he gives up the edge one-onone in space where he guys to just get the sideline on him he also loses seemingly a lot of length when he kind of just Dives in the tackles not really running through tackles I think too often he kind of breaks down puts the shoulder down then he kind of just Falls and he doesn't really create as much length as he could and maybe he runs through and finishes the tackle in space there seems to be at times some kind of a lack of trust in his ability in space I do think though there is some real things that he does well in run sport first off working over blocks using his hands well against receivers not NE against offenseive line but against receivers protecting the edge in that sense using his build to try to keep himself to a spot to constantly set the edge and understanding that against the Run say a toss comes his way like I got to get outside on this spot using his length to finish he does carry some range and I think that he does show a lot more success when he's in the Box finishing on tackles or finishing downhill say that he's coming from a top down position and the receiver is just getting his hands in the football not a lot of threat where he's like squaring him up instead the receiver maybe doesn't even have his eyes to him you'll see him run through tackles lay some pretty nice hits in those spots and then there's also awareness of the sticks like he's trying to get here I got to throw this guy back you'll see that he's obviously built to do that and there's some really nice hits that you'll see occasionally when you watch him when he's coming downhill pretty proactive hips where his H hips open pretty well where he can get out to the edge and not be out fling consistently like on end round I don't the issue is to me I don't think he always carries Force through his tackles to me that's because he kind of just launches himself rather than actually running through tackles where he just kind of lose his Force the closing speed is not great either doesn't carry great closing speed I don't love him in the open field that's my big issue not that he won't break himself down or he's just going to kind of throw himself in close to the eyes it's just that you don't get as much consistency as actually making the play as you would like and I think again too often he allows guys to hit the sideline when he's there okay it's usually not terrible it's not an awful effort I just don't think he's great in open field I think he's much better when you see him in kind of a phone booth aspect plus he also has the special teams play as well I don't know how much he'll do with that with the Lions assuming that he's a starter but he played the Jammer roll a little bit this past season with Tampa Bay which kind of stood out to me I wasn't expecting that on the punt turn team moving on to the transition as we kind of get things wrapped it up moving Transition on to the transition ability this is an therea where I think that he's a plus as well it's a lot of different ways they are transitioning like I said I really like the way that he transitions out of his press turns and runs utilizes length but also shows the bend the flexion the knee bend the hips I think that he shows that really well you also see it sometimes in off coverage his hips get loose pretty easy it's just when he has to kind of 180 that's when it becomes an issue if he can go Square to open up that's pretty good it's when he's like hey my hips already declared this way now I got to flip back that way that's where I think you're going to find problems you're going to find some stumbling a little bit as well he's also really controlling this downhill angle but he is a little bit delayed to plan and drive we thought that against Houston he is a little bit delayed in certain spots to plant and dry sometimes his footwork isn't always balanced his weight will shift a little bit in certain spots limit his foot top of the work foot foot top of the route footwork which is very helpful he's really able to limit that with the receiver you can also do that underneath too or even in recovery spots where he misses off the line but he got to he has to recover the quickness that he's able to kind of recover his feet and you'll constantly see it his feet usually don't get too too wide he may spread out the line and take a step but usually gets that second step underneath where he's able to get back to a balanced position you don't see him in spots where like one foot's out wide he's kind of reaching and now it's like I'm stumbling trying to get back it's more of a weight shifting kind of issue than it is to me um not having his feet underneath him also does really good job of getting flat especially from half turn that ability to kind of just roll and turn the corner out routes flat routes he does a really nice job getting flat you see it against George K right kind of the deep middle route that ability to kind of just get flat and stick on top of routes probably the aspect that surprised me the most with the explosiveness that he just brought to the table the explosiveness opening his hips we saw it against you know the Minnesota bike that explosiveness when he opens up from the top of the route that is real and it shows real balance and ability to kind of open up plant and drive and kind of wrap it all up here my favorite aspect honestly of this player is probably going to be mental toughness it is one of the key aspects of a quarterback and obviously the injuries that he's had to come back from and deal with but even just through a game and I think honestly the perfect example of some of that mental toughness is if you go back and you just watch a play against inota and the same route that he got beat on early in the game which he ended up making the play keeping him short of the first down he was still made the play defensively but he nearly gave up the first down they come back at the end of the game deep out route breaks on the football knocks it away it was a little bit up and down throughout the game but he knocks the football away makes a huge play gets Tampa Bay off the field they end up winning that game by three it was like the gamechanging play I thought that was the best play he had this past season saw a lot of good things thought that was the best one that was a kind of a small example of the mental toughness he has there are games where things get really really rough there stretches that are rough there are certain reps where he's like who that was that was tough especially when he's asked to kind of go play their best receiver like against Jefferson he's following him around a little bit then they may pull back like let's not do that anymore let's just stick you to a side or if you go in the slot you know don't necessarily deal with him if he's in the slot we'll just change our coverage a little bit but I do think Mental Toughness that the mental toughness is real within his game where throughout the game he's going to keep battling things don't tend to kind of stick with him you can have really rough stretches and then he comes back and he just kind of seems to learn from it I think mental toughness is the biggest strength within this player I think that's going to help him now where you get to some of the football intelligence here again getting pulled out of routes he's too late to switch too often you know kind of understanding that rout development there is situational awareness where the sticks is it a go line situation are we expecting a switch here then you'll see it fourth and one I'm expecting a switch and he's on top of it but you don't see that enough in terms of maybe some of the route that's getting set up you saw against Buffalo where again not maybe his issue in terms of like he was like getting ready to switch things off and the receiver just kind of kept pushing fielding's like I can't pass this off couldn't get over top and actually make the play underneath kind of that slither to kind of just slide through and get down on those play it carries a little bit of sluggishness especially again in some of those transitions those Offman transition there is some sluggishness there in some of the twitch the reactive athleticism specifically the recovery isn't always Elite either but to me I do think the mental toughness is the thing that stands out the most about this player I think that's the thing that honestly is going to help him the most and for the Lions here what did they get is it worth it well overall I think the lions got a player that's versatile scheme-wise you can put him out there wherever you want him play left quarterback right quarterback we'll probably stick more to his side here I think there's certain games where you can put him on a matchup and just see how it go if it's going rough you know you pull him off of that we can just play aside but honestly he's showing that ability to play one-onone with st Brown if they're not the most Shifty receiver he's going to have some real success even if they're not the biggest receiver like he did against sa Brown now Jefferson he gives problems to everybody but he also had his good reps in there against Justin Jefferson as well he just doesn't carry a lot of Slither through traffic so when guys set of pick routes or he's having to kind of weave through traffic with a guy that's where you get problems and then we also did see big separation at time because his weight will kind of shift he as well as he traces if the route continues to have multiple complex breaks and it gets longer and longer that's where you'll see some inconsistency sticking with it if you get kind of like simpler out routes he's running a deep dig route Vision he's running a post route you get a lot more success in those spots and then it comes back to okay where is his vision is his vision looking at the receiver or the quarterback if he's looking more at the quarterback do you get more lapses you probably will more laps in terms of actually breaking the football you'll get too much space created he doesn't have the best explosive is plant and dry from off man coverage now you're giving up easy receptions like againsts Buffalo they're tight end k k just kind of walks over the middle here it's like we probably shouldn't give that up or when he's breaking on the ball he falls himself behind but what I think he brings tons of man coverage ability tons of flexibility you just need him out there and healthy as much as possible I'm assuming he's going to miss some games that's okay but the more you have him out there obviously the better especially for extension talks here but this is a player to me that the fact that he's 27 years old I think he has more than enough physicality I think he's a really good press corner I think he fits man coverage really well but there's also a lot of scheme versatility and at very least he's smart I mean a guy that's this big that plays like he does that plays with the balance that plays with the control technically sound but also the understanding and just awareness of what's happening in terms of what coverage type we're in that to me is something that hopefully can pass on I we talk about this all can pass on to some of these younger guys I think he brings attributes of things that's like hey he can just learn from this guy just learn there's a lot of things that you can learn from Carlton Davis as a 27-year-old corner it is great to have this vet cuz he's proven he's done it he's battled back from injuries it's not a new thing for him to be Bang up but he also brings a lot of newness to the re quarterback room in terms of size physicality it's much if we have physicality we don't have the size that is a unique skill set lines really haven't had much of okay until you go back to ammani and Jeff Auda were here so this definitely shakes up the quarterback room a little bit just in terms of the builds that we have to Me overall Carlton Davis can play is he a number one corner I believe he is a number one corner just based on what they ask of him uh I just think you know statistics can vary the man coverage one speak the most especially success on the football there that's going to be the the the huge thing but when you carry the right mental toughness you carry flexibility in terms of coverage and you have something that you can kind of lean on which is to me press a guy get physical use my hands but also play with really good control and just kind of anticipation when you have that to lean on you can be considered number one corner he's not maybe the best quarterback in the league but the guy has glimpses of playing Amazing football and specifically that ability just track guys in the back of the end zone I love it so overall Carlton Davis is a Detroit Lion I'm very glad that he's a lion this is going to be a huge Edition I only for what we have now but also hopefully for the young guys so with that I'm going leave it right there let me know your thoughts in the comments below hopefully the audio and quality came out pretty good for this one we'll see all right we'll see I'm not home right now so the ending may be a little bit different maybe a little bit less of voiceovers things like that but I'm going to leave it there thank you for watching and I'm out
