LA Rams Review | Detroit Lions Podcast

hey everyone Jeff rizen for the Detroit Lions podcast here uh doing a bit of a solo show this week uh Chris and I are unable to do a live show for various reasons scheduling conflicts uh so you get me today uh we're recording this on Tuesday morning and we're going to talk about the Lions win over the Rams let's [Music] go oh all right fun win good win overtime win probably shouldn't have gone overtime but I'm glad that it did uh there was uh it was a roller coaster of a game uh with the Lions you know going up then giving it up and then coming back and doing what they should have done more of the entire game um want to break this down uh in a couple of ways uh basically the big takeaways from the game um and the first one number one very impressed with how the team responded to adversity this is one of the first examples of the Lions being a heavy favorite to you know be a legit Super Bowl Contender didn't really have that coming into the season last year I think we were all pretty optimistic but they hadn't proven it yet they hadn't made the playoffs yet now they've won a couple playoff games uh and they they they've got the reputation they are one of the odds on favorites to be the Super Bowl champs they need to be viewed a little differently and other teams are going to view them that way um you're going to get everybody's best shot now uh especially a team like the Rams that you beat last year in the postseason like yeah they're they're not going to take you lightly you're going to get everything that you've got that they've got and I thought the Lions did a really good job of handling that and managing it uh specifically on defense uh because uh Aaron Glenn like look the the books out on on what you do to this team and uh you know I thought I thought the Rams had a really really good plan of attack for their specific personnel and the limitations that they had with their offensive line being out I thought the Lions defense played very well against that obviously it would have been nice if you know they they got more sacks uh but the the pass rush my God was Unreal all the pressures Hutch was phenomenal Marcus Davenport was phenomenal on the other side Dan Campbell talked about it after the game he is exactly what they've wanted opposite Hutch and it showed in the first week look I know people are getting hung up of the the that they got two sacks look they impacted the game heavily don't worry about the lack of sacks some of that's Matthew Stafford being the Matthew Stafford that we used to love here and his ability to avoid sacks because he can throw the ball you know out of his hands super quick from any weird angle he was great at sack avoidance when he was in Detroit guess what he still got at it give him credit for that their ability to get the ball out quickly um and it happened a lot more in the first half than it did in the second half but it did a few things to the Lions defense one um it kept them from getting sacks two it kept them from playing press man coverage it made them play more of a zone defense that's not what these Corners are well versed at like that's that's a shf move by Shawn mcy it's a good one I thought the the play of guys like Alex anzalone uh Kirby Joseph tyon Arnold and Carlton Davis um specifically in in post catch defense was outstanding it felt like they were ready for what the Rams were going to throw at them um knowing that the Rams would probably try to go quick and they did in the first half they got the ball out in under 2.3 seconds uh per pass in the first half and that sh stats for that the guys there answered their emails um and and got that for me uh that would be the fastest of any quarterback getting the ball out all year uh or or all week one it's the year gotta get used to this uh it was I was very impressed with the open field tackling um anzalone was a Madman two tackles for loss on passes in the first half it's exactly what you need to do against that sort of an offensive attack and it work worked thought the defense was very sharp uh they had some let Downs later we're going to talk a little bit more about that but I thought overall the team was as prepared as they could be going into the game offense great game plan coming out let's Hammer them like like they got all these new guys up front their linebackers are relatively inexperienced it's a defense that hadn't played together like the Lions the Rams didn't play a single starter in preseason that's that's a growing Trend where talk about that a little bit later too because Dan Campbell addressed that today um again I'm recording this Tuesday Morning um I thought they got away from it but I thought in terms of being prepared for week one and taking the Rams Best Shot thought the Lions coaching staff and players did a really good job of preparing for that and uh they deserve to be lauded for that because it carried them to a win um again that's the Rams are that's good football team that's a team you might see in January again we'll see how healthy they get but uh you know that's that's not a team to be taken lightly and I will say in the leadup to the game I probably didn't give their their youngsters on defense enough credit um I like I knew I knew Bryant Young was good I knew that you know uh Jared verse uh Braden Fisk verse specifically was going to be a good football player but they hadn't played together at all um and they they they're good man um that organization knows how to draft pass rushers they didn't terribly Miss Aaron Donald they missed him more in the Run game than they did in the pass game and that's Testament to the Rams um I'm I'm very big on giving credit where credit is due and the Rams deserve credit that means that the Lions also deserve a lot of credit for beating them and uh that the longer that I've gotten away from the immediacy of the game and The Angst of blowing a 17 to three lead um that they never should have blown um I feel a lot better about the win in the path to the victory uh there are certainly some points to nitpick and we will but uh just just overall a really fun watch it was great being back in and watching a game uh the fans fans were unreal in Ford Field man um I watched the game from home but you can feel it through the TV I'm sure all of you who watched it from home like you felt it you could hear it on the radio call if you listen to to Dan and lus calling the game like they had to yell so you could hear them because they couldn't hear each other they're sitting right next to each other with headphones on um that's that's special man that was that was really cool so uh we're one and0 and that's the best thing and that's the first takeaway um we get now we'll get to a little bit more of the technical stuff let's talk about some of the things that that happened in the game want to focus on J uh because this was the game of J and he rightly got the game ball I thought that uh it was very classy to see Jared Goff give him the game ball because gof didn't deserve it wasn't Jered Go's best game but it was jao's best game and for the fan base that was very skeptical about J Mo very worried about J Mo can he be the number two receiver is he big enough is he going to be able to handle it was he will he can he catch like there's a lot and by the way all those questions were valid and legitimate because what we've seen from J hadn't proven that he could do any of that reliably week one he did it Lions do not win that football game without Jameson Williams playing as well as he did because the Rams again good football team well coached team they erased the middle of the field where Jared Goff and Alan R BR and Sam lto specifically like to work they took all that away they did it in a number of different ways uh I watched the game uh all 22 this this morning the the number of different ways that they clogged the middle and prevented you know they use different style of bracketing sometimes they bracketed sides sometimes they bracketed front and back um it was very deceptive they did a really good job of not revealing it pre- snap uh that's other teams are going to start doing that too so what's the antidote to that freaking jbo is the antidote to that and he was trying to single cover him on the look travius white that's a guy made some Pro bowls good Corner real good Savvy veteran J Mo frein smoked him not just on that touchdown play he had other ones where like wow uh that was that was really really sweet uh and it couldn't have happened at a better time let's let's let's throw it right out there you know this is a team that has some wide receiver depth issues the Rams dared somebody else to beat them other than Amon R and leaport you know what J did it he was up to the task the confidence that that has to give everybody on that Detroit offense specifically J Mo that's that is an invaluable growth point and I love I love the fact that he was the player of the game he earned it he was he was so good it wasn't just you know the long catch where he had to know beat the the jam that that that little hesitation Stutter Step my God that that's that's veteran Savvy right there it's not things we've seen from J Mo before they used him on a Jet Sweep loved it worked very well um was mortified that he went down a little bit but he want up being okay he's got a little a little bit of European soccer player in him where like he's going to like he feels the hits he's look he's not he's not a big guy he's not he's not thick he's going to feel those hits um but he he learned that you know okay this is this a little bump I'm good and let's get back out there um good on him for doing that um but everybody's hard sto there I included game of J baby uh that was and and by the way the way that he did it it's repeatable it's repeatable against the Buccaneers this week can do another video later this week talking about the Buccaneers we're going to preview that game um probably Thursday or Friday um Bishop Brown will also be doing that that's why you need to like And subscribe uh to our channel here so you will find when the Detroit Lions podcast has something coming out uh I will do what I do yeah uh but again Jameson Williams player of the game he earned it it was great to see it was validation for all the the fluff that myself and other people in the media have been giving him all summer he looked like a different J all summer looked like a different J in week one and that's something that I hope that all lions fans can Embrace because uh I don't think that was a fluke I think he's going to be able to do that again and again and again now it's not going to be every week there will be weeks where he doesn't have five catches for over 100 yards there will be weeks where he gets two catches for 38 yards and and maybe a run for 11 this sort of the the way that the defenses dictate things I'm St Brown is going to catch more than three passes uh he could catch 15 next week and it wouldn't surprise me um they Ben Johnson will find a way the offense will figure that out but the fact that they have and and it's on tape now that J can beat you over the top and J can do things that J Mo couldn't do in the past that's a beautiful development for the Detroit Lions let's go to the defensive s of the ball who's the defensive player of the game well we got some options on this one uh again I thought the defense was great uh giving up 20 points look I know there's trepidation but the fact that they the the Rams had Patchwork offensive line puko went out during the game like that's still a good offense Matthew Stafford was really good really good um one of the best games we've seen from him and we've seen a lot of Matthew Stafford in a Detroit uniform and when there was 17 seconds left on the clock after Jake Bates made that last field goal yeah I was a little worried I've seen Stafford do that before Hutch sacked him and Aiden Hutchinson certainly H he had a monster game again I know it didn't take at two sacks in the game uh Hutch got that one at the end uh and Davenport and anque split the other one they lived in the back field their pressure rate was so high uh the Lions had the top Pro Football Focus um pass rush grade as a team Hutch had a 94 um I'm I'm going to get to the PFF stuff in a little bit but uh it certainly passed the eye test he was so good um I'm look he he he got several penalties um they got a couple of them called a couple of them that didn't that tripping penalty my God like how many times have we seen the Lions get called for that he's not getting that call yet and that's that's frustrating but uh he was he was so good Davenport on the other side um Dan Campbell said it it's exactly what we wanted on the other side um he is for for the first week he was healthy and looked great the length the power the ability to play The Run on the way to the quarterback but I tell you what that sack that he split the bend he showed for a guy that's his size that was ridiculous that's the marus stav port that they wanted to get and they got him in week one and ready to God he stays healthy because that guy is a problem for offenses my goodness that was the the the Lions pass rush took away the Deep throw from that game you talk about the the the marriage of the pass rush and the coverage scheme you know pressure pick cover sack um in this one it was about the pressure and they got the pick with uh with Kirby Joseph getting that pick in the end zone by the way that was the first Red Zone interception that Matthew Stafford threw since week five of 2021 the guy does not make mistakes down in the Red Zone again we know that from his time in Detroit pressure forced it Kirby took advantage I and I see all these all the fan reactions and I get a lot of it on on Twitter and we've even had some of it in our patreon slack ripping on the defense I'm like I think yall watched a different game than I did uh I thought the defense was great yeah they gave up 20 points that's that's enough to win that that's definitely enough to beat that Rams team and should be it was thankfully but uh it was get a little get a little squirly at the end anzalone deserves a lot of credit two tackles for losses on passes in the first half had three for the game uh had 13 total tackles and three tackles for loss he's the first ever Lions linebacker to get at least 12 tackles and at least three tackles for loss in a game ever Joe Schmidt never did that he's in the Hall of Fame he retired well before I was born like the numbers don't lie guy was a phenomenal player he never did that they didn't track tackles for loss back then so little technicality but anone played fantastic I thought by and large the cornerbacks tyon Arnold Carlton Davis Ami when he came in thought they were pretty good thought they did a really good job of tackling and you got to do that again when when when the offense dictates to you that you have to play zone because they're going so fast getting the ball out short passes your focus switches to stopping yards after catch tackle them they're going to throw that swing pass you know your linebackers your safeties um they've got to get out there and make those plays to Corners got to get off those blocks um Rams are a lot like the Lions you can't play wide receiver for the Rams if you're not a good blocker and a high effort blocker and they showed that thought the Lions did a pretty good job there um with one notable exception we'll get to him but uh players of the game defense I mean Kirby making that pick that was huge uh that was a great play Hutch anzelone like it's kind of kind hard to take a pick there uh I'm going to go with Hutch just because of the impact that he had on the entire game and did it the entire game um anone great like certainly deserves the credit and the flowers that he's getting uh and it was nice to see the fan reaction of that too um the fans were very Pro anzalone um and that that that's nice to see because um again if you've been to all lions practice at training camp or whatever if if you're at the game Watch when they go to the sideline when the defense goes to the sideline who's talking to him Alex anzelone is the player that's leading that there's a lot of really good talented players on that team anzalone is the the spiritual leader of that team he didn't he didn't even call the plays on the field like Jack Campbell has the Green Dot now doesn't diminish what anzelone did um I thought uh I'm GNA give I thought ter AR but we'll just roll right into this um teron Arnold I thought was ready uh he's got to learn how to play without his hands as much that's something that all Corners have to go through every s Gardner had to go through it Devon Witherspoon is still going through it in Seattle a little bit but he's getting a lot better at it every top Corner Daryl Stingley down in uh um in Houston is that way Denzel ward in Cleveland is that way great corners but they are handsy and they were handsy in college because you're allowed to be hiier in college can't do that as much in the NFL you gotta learn how to conceal it a little bit better uh so that's something to work on but I thought he played well I thought the so this is interesting because this is where you know the the benefit of going back and rewatching it in real time I thought the first pass interference call was crap and I thought the second one was a pretty good call um as I rewatched the game I got to flip that like first one was yeah yeah probably the second one like no that's not a penalty um so that's that's where uh it's where you got to you know adjust your takes um when you're presented with evidence that proves that you were wrong you got to go with the evidence baby don't stick to your don't stick to your uh your wrong point and uh so I learned from that I thought I thought Arnold played well I thought his coverage was good I think uh for a rookie making his first first appearance in an NFL game against puka akua for a while and then Cooper cup yeah I'll take that good good game Carlon Davis was very good wish he would have caught that interception that would have been nice landed on the ball the wind knocked out of him he he he was good U so yeah uh very very good debut for tyon Arnold it didn't give up the catastrophic play um again the penalties led to points he'll get better at that I'm not worried about that um that's sort of the take on the positives of the defense and now we get to the part where we got a hand out some criticism and it's Meridan Le I think it's merited I think most people think it's merited Ben Johnson got away from what was working and the third quarter continues to be a significant problem specifically for Ben Johnson more so than the entire offense more so than Jared G and I have a theory on this I don't just just my theory from watching all the games but also from you know watching practice preparation when they go through scrimmages and they actually play the game uh and uncanny that even like when they they did their last scrimmage in the last uh the training camp practice that we were at uh as media like third quarter the defense what what would have been the third quarter simulated obviously but defense just absolutely annihilated the first team offense I my thought is is that Ben Johnson gets into his head how a game is going to play because like the first half I thought I thought the game plan was exceptional for attacking a young Rams defense that hadn't practiced or played together um they practic they had played together in a game situation because again the Rams did not play a starter in the preseason much like the Lions I thought that the Lions did a very smart thing there I thought hammering David Montgomery early and then bringing in Gibbs to you know right after that after that successful drive with with Monty leading the way was really smart and then okay Gibbs had a couple drives that were pretty good and then where's Montgomery third quarter no Montgomery third quarter we're starting to throw the ball where it shouldn't be thrown we're letting the defense I think that Johnson has a feeling of this is so this is how the defense is going to respond to what we've done in the first half um and he anticipates that and then he switches the offense a little bit to react to what he thinks the defense might be doing but the defense doesn't always do that and I don't think that Ben Johnson adapts quickly enough to that because what they did in overtime that last drive that was their all freaking game go heavy Personnel lean on pan lean on Frank rag now lean on Kevin zitler to ask him to do what he does really well Graham Glascow playing left guard out of position a little bit from where he's used to and it showed him pass protection let those big guys get comfortable let them go down and kick some ass we got away from kicking ass if you're kicking somebody's ass don't stop leave them bloodied and dead on the ground don't stop beating them until they're done think Ben Johnson got away from that I think that hurt the Lions it almost cost them a game it has cost them games in the past passed last year some he's got to he's got to learn from that and I hope that Dan Campbell and Scotty Montgomery who I have picked up from from various horses is more involved in the game plan than you might think he is um he's doing a lot during the game not as much but uh I'm hopeful that the Lions learn from that because they survived it against the Rams and that that's a really good football team will they be able to survive that against the Buccaneers offense that's coming in that they're they're going to put up some points but that's a good team that's he won a playoff game last year don't look past that Mike Evans had a phenomenal week one Baker Mayfield was probably the best passer in the league in week one I don't think he'll do it again but he can they've shown it gotta gotta keep working on what's working and I thought that Ben Johnson was a little too quick um and too too caught up in thinking that it was going to change and it didn't if that makes sense there's my n Ash love you buddy um I I don't think that Ben Johnson had a good second half but I thought he had a great overtime and also the last Drive leading into it I think they got back to a lot of what had been working um and tried to quit forcing things that they thought might be there and weren't and uh you know Johnson deserves a credit for doing that as well Montgomery Rams couldn't stop that um that look they're a lighter defensive front what do you do with that metal up the ass baby the old Metallica t-shirt that I got thrown out of school once for wearing to school keep freaking going at it this is a physical football team pan Su like I don't want that guy mad at me I don't I don't want him run block my God he's terrifying I I really hope the Lions figure that out and fix that because uh it again it almost cost them a game it didn't fortunately I think the defense helped bail them out a little bit I think uh you know realizing just in the nick of time that they needed to do what they did wasn't always pretty but we got it done um one quick thing and and this will Dove tail in because there's a lot of talk about the rust from the offense and that was that was real offense didn't play an entire didn't play a snap the entire preseason Rams also didn't um they didn't play any of their defensive starters either Danny Kell got asked about that this morning uh on on his weekly appearance with with my good friend Jim Costa on 971 um CA Jansen and Heather uh and um also talked about it um in his press conference in his press conference on Monday was asked like hey what did this rust thing um this is that is that going to make you change your ways and maybe start playing some guys in the preseason and Dan was like very emphatic like nope not going to do it we feel like our practice simulates it well is the scrimmage that I I talked about you know doing joint practices he feels like that's enough for them to be ready um I would disagree a little bit but I understand where he's coming from you can't lose guys to in injury um there were offenses that did um play a lot in the preseason together to try to get ready um Chicago Bears being one of them J almost had as many yards by himself as they did like it I think as the the as the Lions get to be a more veteran team and they are certainly getting that way on offense I think that rust factor I think it's a little bit I think it's less important to play those guys to get them out there um so in a way I agree with Dan but I I would still like to see like there are ways to avoid it and I I'm not I hope that Dan took the question seriously um and the sentiment behind it seriously because they they were they were a little flatter than they needed to be I I don't think G was super sharp now again some of that is the fact that the Rams defense did a great job of taking away what they wanted to take what the Lions really tended to want to do but uh especially with the offensive line you know you got new guards and new spots zayer hadn't practice with these guys a lot because he'd been hurt uh he struggled a little bit early um and may maybe you could have gotten him in you more time in the again he was hurt a little bit so it's hard to do that uh but when you're working in I I would have liked to have seen a little bit more of that yeah um and but it's not going to happen uh they're clearly never going to play people of importance in the preseason that's just something that we're going to have to deal with as lions fans and by the way it's working pretty well they got the win they won last year in Kansas City uh against the defending Super Bowl champs who do play regularly in the preseason Mahomes plays like we saw it this year um so there is certainly different philosophies on doing it look the Lions keepy point in week one we're not going to complain fortunately not everything was positive out of the game and one of the big negatives and it was weird because it was completely unexpected was Briant Branch playing like crap that was rough man 32 had a bad game and it got reflected in the Pro Football Focus grades he had a uh let me pull it up here uh 55.2 was the second lowest on the defense only Kyle PCO was lower Kyle PCO didn't play a whole lot as a practice squad call up um Branch missing tackles diving at feet that weren't there anymore it's not like him felt like he just wasn't dialed in and look and this is where you get into the the is week one do you overreact how do you react I trust that Brian branch is a really good football player I've seen it we've all seen him be a very impactful football player on defense he had a bad day that will happen Jerry go didn't have a great day he was the lowest graded Lions offensive player on PFF and by the way that kind of passes the eye test golf wasn't great uh probably should have thrown an interception or two uh for whatever reason he just he just wasn't great either brand branch is going to bounce back now there is this is where I push back against Dan Campbell a little bit on the the rust thing branch is playing a new position got new cornerbacks all around him like maybe maybe field test that a little bit against live five action against an offense that you haven't seen in practice before um because and and again this is this is where I will will quibble with the kach I won't won't fight him on it because I think he's in general right on it but when you're the Lions defense you see the Lions practice offense all the time like you have an idea of what they're going to do you have an idea of what the Personnel is capable of doing you know what amanra is you know what Jam is you know what Lea is you don't know what Tyler Johnson is you don't know what Colby Parkinson is you don't know what what the Rams running Gates like you don't know what their offensive Line's going to be like they didn't know what their offensive line was going to be like so they got out there um and that I yeah that's that that is a that I think that's a valid point I saw some people talking about that on social media I think I think I think there's some Merit to that um but Branch I'm confident he'll bounce back not not not worried about that um he gets chance to play a very different style of team in the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming week and I think you'll see a much better Brian Branch wouldn't surprise me if he flips it and winds up being in the top five of the the Lions PF scores on defense but no question about it he had a bad game um the golf golf will golf will be fine look I'm going to give the Lions or I'm sorry the Rams pass rush I see those how the draft pass rushers man like Bryant Young last year you get Jared verse coming in Jared ver by the way a guy that a l a lot of lions fans really liked in this draft process y'all got good eyes because he was good uh he beat Taylor Decker a couple times uh more than a couple times I I thought I didn't think it was a great game from Decker I didn't think it was a great game from Graham Glasgow and pass protection I thought it was a run blocking was great Su got beat be a couple times um I I will say that more Oh I thought pan was very very good overall I think the where the the friction point there was that he's playing with a guy to his inside that he was unfamiliar with they hadn't played together much um and and that that sort of transition between when you're passing off a a Twist or a stunt or you're moving in concert to go outside or doing a dual block or whatever it it it wasn't cohesive yet um again I'm worry about that pen was the best right tackle in football like no no no need to worry there folks um that that was more of week one things um but I do want to talk about a couple of the other things that I saw in the the Pro Football Focus grades um uh David Montgomery obviously being up there very high J being very high uh anone was high so the top five on the team were Hutch Montgomery uh J they all earned over 82s um anything over 80 is like really really good anzelone was 79 pan was 78.9 that's your top five from the game um lions are over a 90 grade on pass rush again it showed rushing offense 87.3 Inc that was so much fun um and I don't want to short shift Gibbs on this either because I thought he had a couple of really nice runs uh the run where he picked up a first down um on a third down run where it wasn't well blocked um the Rams played it very very well they defended it well and he still got the first down not sure that he did that in the past um more of the point that's not DeAndre Swift does not get that first down jir Gibbs does we upgraded there there's a lot of people that still love Swift they okay for Chicago as well as you could do in that sorry can't stop laughing that my God that was rough but they won um QB wins baby Caleb Williams got the win that was but that that was absolutely a uh a Titans and will L loss and uh if the Titans play anywhere close to the way that they did against Chicago when they when we play the the Titans uh the alliance drought against Tennessee will come to a emphatic end um that was some really really bad quarterback play from will Levis that interception is uh there was Tim Bole ask leave it at that uh a couple other things from the PFF notes um you know Jack Campbell being low Josh Pascal being low those were a little disappointing because I thought they had opportunities to do a little bit more than what they did um and it it just wasn't there for them um again it's week one you don't want to overreact you're not going to call them bums you're not going to say that they're worthless um that they need to be benched or anything but it's a growth process and we need to see a little bit more from them going forward um again both have shown that they can do it we we'll be we'll be good with that um on the on the defensive side there was one um Derek Barnes got a 77.1 it was the third highest grade on the defense that's about the only grade on the defense that doesn't really pass I don't think he played a great game uh I thought that he was a little bit indecisive I would have liked to have seen him do more as a pass rusher uh I thought that his coverage when he was asked to cover Colby Parkinson their tight end wasn't great he was a little bit step behind from where I wanted it to be so that was one um overall I thought PFF um did a very look we're critical of PFF a lot on this show but I think this one they they did a really good job um with their grades matching what we saw um so you know give him credit for it uh that but that was that was one that caught me a little bit um off um Alan ra getting a really low grade uh the lowest on five on the offense uh jarro GF Brock Wright Parker hessie um the number two and number three tight ends there um yeah they they weren't asked to do a lot though son I don't know about that I I he make a great block too uh Aman ra had a very rough game and again this was the ram saying your star is not going to beat us beat us with somebody else we're taking him away and they did a very good job of that but also I also don't think that amanra played great on his own right I didn't feel like he presented himself as a Target super well um on flash routes comeback routes Texas not Texas you know hook routes option routes it felt like he just wasn't at his best um I'd give him a B+ on that game um and his B+ is still really really high um but it seems low for him uh and leaf got a 54.9 Leaf uh and this showed up and I'm only through about the first half um I got the first drive of the third quarter on the all 22 I need to get this done though um so he wasn't getting open um and that is a little bit concerning he did have that really nice run though um and I thought as a punt returner he did well uh but the PFF grades are independent of that uh uh it's not here on uh on the PFF uh tracker thing that uh my guy Billy retti wrote up for lionswire for it but um Jake Bates Hogan Hatton new Long Snapper new kicker I had perfect faith in Hogan Hatton he was phenomenal all summer he's a great athlete I think he's going to be our he could be the next on mu back it' be great to have that position locked down forever Jake Bates yeah I was nervous when he went out there for that field goal oh boy crossed every every single part of my body that can be crossed he nailed it nailed it felt good felt good for I was so happy for him because he hasn't done that before first NFL game well this is a guy who not only did he not kick field goals in college he didn't kick field goals in college because he didn't win the job in college and either any of the colleges he was at like this is a Monumental leap in the in the career of Jake Bates he went out and it was perfect the first night Dave fips confidence got rewarded in that Dan Campbell didn't hesitate to send him out there either that's uh that's important um really really good debut from Jake Bates overall that made me very happy um he earned more trust from me uh but my trust doesn't matter Dan Campbell's trust matter Dave fi's trust M matters and he earned that too so that was that was really really nice to see um gonna wrap it up we got the Buccaneers coming in they won they look good going to wrap it going a little bit around the division um I'll I'll make it quick U we all watched Green Bay Jordan love obviously getting hurt he don't want to see guys get hurt he should be back based on what Dr Lea has said um by the way Dr Leo is freaking killing it both for the Detroit Lions podcast and for lionswire I am thrilled to have him on board with all the ventes that I'm involved with um thank you so much Dr Le for your your personality but also your your very very accurate and well-healed U medical opinions you're doing great with it and uh if you haven't watched his videos please watch them he's so good at breaking down the and and providing com comparable you know it's he's like the Zillow of of football injuries like he's going to find you comparisons from players who are of that size and of that position who've had the same injury um and how long it took them to come back and if they came back and you know how how their impact was when they got back we'll see on Jordan love but uh the Packers Packers had some issues they played a good football team the Eagles looked really good I eagles look better than I thought they would um playing in Brazil uh but uh Minnesota beat the Giants that game to me was about the Giants being really bad aside from the by the those uniforms oh my God they got to go can't can't wear those again I look I know they're they're they're throwing back to the it's their 100th year that was that was not good Daniel Jones needs to learn that Andre vanle plays for the Vikings and not one of his wide receiver that was that was rough man um give I will give I will give Sam darnold and their offense some credit I thought the darnold handled himself pretty well as the unexpected starter with JJ McCarthy being out um their defense isn't going to look like that again against a competent offense the Giants don't have a competent offense I'm not not gonna not going to read too much into the Vikings defensive performance on that um I mean you got to acknowledge it I don't think that's replicable against the Lions we don't play them for a long time anyways the Bears the Bears won that's not a game they should have won and for as much as we want to goof on their offense and I have and I will the fact that they found a way to win that game makes them dangerous like you got to respect that that that that's not again that's not a game they should have won at all their offense did nothing Tennessee's defense I don't think is that great they they played pretty well but that the Bears won that game yeah that that that's actually a sign that we should probably take them a little more seriously as a a serious competitor for the the NFC North no lot fans don't want to hear that but like that's a game that they lose anytime in their recent past that that that's a game that's a game that uh was so lions by the the Titans finding a way to lose a game that you dominated and should have won uh I'm going to give the Bears a little bit of credit for that um but they're not going to win with that offense most weeks um but the fact that they found a way good for them we get the Buccaneers this week uh again I will be back later this week probably Friday um with preview on that thanks so much for tuning in uh make sure you like and uh subscribe so you know when I get to come in your ear holes automatically whether you want that or not it's fun uh thanks to everybody for the support the feedback um it's been great um lions are 1 and0 we're looking down at the rest of the division of the Minnesota obviously but uh mission accomplished week one let's go get it week two let's go [Music]
