Is Michigan State Set Up For Success Entering 2024? | Michigan State Football 2024

Introduction + Mel Tucker Era Recap the Michigan State Spartans shocked the college football Universe in 2021 they were picked to finish last in the Big 10 East and toward the bottom more so the bottomless pit of the Big 10 conference overall I personally remember picking them to go 4-8 and I think 2- seven in conference well by their fifth game of the regular season they already matched my preseason win prediction of four wins they started out a know including a win over arch rival in state rival Michigan who was a top 10 team at the time that the Spartans won that game 37-33 in East Lancing and Michigan went on to win the Big 10 go 12-2 and participate in the college football playoff even beating Ohio State in a drumming a shock to everyone that team that Michigan team lost to Michigan State in 2021 I think we all remember that that with Kenneth Walker's five touchdown performance Michigan State finished the year 11-2 they beat Pittsburgh in the Peach Bowl lost 56 to7 against Ohio State in a historic loss in the same way that their win over Michigan was a historic win also lost to Purdue but they also beat Maryland and Penn State to close out the month of November along with those two in conference losses the 2021 season was so shocking that Mel talk ER bringing Michigan State into the upper tier of the Big 10 and passing Michigan and passing much of the Big 10 and the question of can he compete with Ohio state that was actually a talking point for the 2022 preseason it was something that I regrettably participated in although you know hindsight is 2020 and people like Josh pate and Colin coward participated in it too melt Tucker and Michigan State were in the National Spotlight in a mini Dion Sanders Colorado way in the 2022 preseason and that all vanished when Michigan State went 5- seven in 2022 I thought that Mel Tucker and his staff and some of the portal moves that they were making were going to help write the ship in 2023 but two games in boom sexual harassment Scandal melt Tucker is fired he is forced to take leave almost immediately harand Barnett comes in he finishes the season 2 and8 after the 2-0 start by former head coach Mel Tucker he's now the defensive backs coach at Northwestern Scotty Hazelton is still unemployed Jay Johnson somehow is the offensive coordinator of Wyoming I say somehow because he's one of the worst OC's in the country and only Courtney Hawkins remains on staff from last year's staff Jon Smith has totally rebuilt the staff brought his guys his men his army to East Lancing and even some of his players in Aiden ches who was a quarterback true freshman who got playing time at Oregon State last season also brought in Tanner Miller interior offensive lineman from Oregon State and tight end Jack velling who's an awesome player and there's more to talk about on today's episode but I wanted to preview and present just the roller coaster of events that's happened in the previous really three seasons of Michigan State football and you could even go further than that and go all the way back to 2020 when melt Tucker beat Northwestern who was a top 10 team in the final rankings and also beat rival Michigan but got humiliated by essentially every other team the Melt Tucker era was a roller coaster for Michigan State fans with plenty of high moments but even more down moments and I have to say I'm confused as to why there isn't more talk maybe I'm missing something but I don't think I am why there isn't more talk about Jonathan Smith in Michigan State because they truly have one of the best staffs in the country and I never said that for Mel Tucker I never said that Mel Tucker or that Michigan State football under Mel Tucker had one of the best staffs in the country in fact I consistently said they had one of the most overrated staffs in the country this Jonathan Smith staff couldn't be further from overrated they might be underrated forever even if they somehow won a national championship at Michigan State which not going to predict that to happen that's unlikely for any team of Michigan State's current Talent OR program status to win at all but if anyone's going to win it all in East Lancing with Jonathan Smith's proven development and coaching him and his staffers Mike McDonald Brian Lindgren Joe rosi and all the other assistants that he's brought on that would be the staff to do it so today we're going to be talking about Michigan State's 2024 expectations and I'm going to give a little bit of my own personal predictions very broad predictions for the season before we resume any further thank you so much football fanatics for checking in and for watching this I promise you won't regret it and since you found my Channel or if you've previously found a Michigan State themed college football with Sam t-shirt via the links in the description or in the pinned comment now I want to talk about positive foundations before I get into anything else the things that I think give Michigan State hope for this upcoming season because while for the first five to eight minutes I talked about the background and a little bit of my for shattering on what I think is the longterm not goal I don't know why I'm blanking out here but what's the long-term expectations or what I think the long-term performance of Michigan State football will be under Jonathan Smith we're really focusing on this year in this video some positive foundations for Michigan State are their Elite coaching staff which helps with recruiting more importantly I think Player Development and strength and conditioning Michigan State's running back room their ground game this includes the offensive line running backs you could also put in tight ends here quarterbacks they have an underrated strong core particularly at running back I really love Nathan Carter I liked his pickup by Michigan State last season played at Yukon previously and did well there with no Supporting Cast and he nearly had a th000 yards last year with a terrible offensive coordinator an awful quarterback room an offensive line that had potential but kapovich just never developed it well I think I don't know why Alabama hired him as a side note um he did not do service to his o line and consequentially he did not help Nathan Carter who was used as a battering ram with little to no little to no results in terms of wins because everything else around him was just that terrible and the defensive line so the staff which is mainly off the field but it's so big and I think so good that you have to include it and then more importantly on the field in the short-term players are more important long-term staffs are more important in my opinion in the short term on the field you have the running back room and parts of the offensive line and you have the defensive line specifically the interior I think these are the positive foundations for Michigan State football Simeon Barrow Jr and Derek Haron return and they originally entered the transfer portal but they decided to make a return after Jonathan Smith was hired Sim and Barrow had three and a half sacks last season 36 total tackles and one forced fumble Derek Haron had 40 total tackles one and a half sacks one pass defended and again forced fumble the defensive tackle unit at Michigan state has at least when healthy never been a problem in 2022 the unit was banged up all season long and since Michigan state has been thin in terms of depth for really the past half decade they've never recruited at a high level and marked Antonio's staff particularly on offense but really I'd say everywhere stopped developing at an elite level after the 2014 season so we've really gone on 10 years in East Lancing without Elite development in truth you had Mike Trestle who was an elite coordinator but coordinators only go so far when the offense is destitute and the head coach is you know forming him forming his own cocoon to hide in and do nothing you AKA mark dantonio But the defensive tackle unit under Mel Tucker was never a problem when healthy the dline was able to produce sound Gap Integrity hold its own against even the best offensive lines in the country such as michigans or Ohio States or other units and I I I like this group I do and it it's not just Simeon Barrow it's not just Derek Harman but there's even backups like dquan du I hope that's how you say his name transferring in from Georgia Tech great player MAV Hansen he's a good player as well Alex Van summeran highly recruited out of high school he played he's played well in the snaps that he's taken red shirt sophomore listed as third on the depth chart this is a deep deep defensive tackle room and DK Harman by the way red shirt Jr so along with Alex Van summeran and I don't know if Barrow or Hansen have any additional years of Eligibility like a CO year they just haven't used yet these aren't all just senior players who are really aged and experienced there is a future in this room as well got provided that none of those players with remaining eligibility transfer out after this season defensive end there are more question marks but Chris Bogle comes back same with Avery Dunn Jaylen Thompson who had a good season as a true freshman Thompson had two sacks 19 total tackles two passes defended and a forced fumble and Michigan State brings in Middle Tennessee State University defensive end quind Darius dunigan who looks to be starting at left defensive end per ourlads.com which this early I found that ourlads does have some questionable depth projections but overall they do seem to be accurate so I'm continuing to use them but just further notice I I've gotten feedback from comments they're not always accurate particularly on my USC video I got some comments on that moving to the offense the running back room and the offensive line Tanner Miller transfer from Oregon State it looks like he's projected to start at Center Luke Newman transfer from Holy Cross looks to start at left guard and Gino van Demar Ethan Boyd Brandon Baldwin guard and then Boyd and Baldwin are tackles respectively they're coming back and they've had playing time on the offensive line for I'd say two years in a row at minimum I think Brandon Baldwins had playing Time dating all the way back to 20 21 or perhaps before redirt senior this whole line does have a nice blend of experience actually has a lot of experience the youngest projected starter is Ethan Boyd who's a red shirt Jr and Tanner Miller is a proven guard Luke Newman was a great offensive lineman at Holy Cross and Brandon Baldwin has received High grades on Pro footb Focus before and then at tight end Jack velling is a great player Brennan parisek his projected backup was great out of high school true freshman last year will be a true sophomore this year more importantly Nathan Carter with 798 rushing yards 4.3 yards per carry four rushing touchdowns I said he had nearly a, yards only 202 yards away because I mean honestly you give him a a slightly better offensive cordinator you give him maybe Payton Thorne doesn't transfer away I mean you change one thing he may have had a th000 yards he toward the end of the season barely got more than 10 carries per game because when you're playing Ohio State when you're playing Penn State or when you're you know playing Michigan with the offense of line and with the skill position play and with the play calling that he got you're you're all you're doing is feeding yourself into the wood chipper you're getting hit your shelf life as a running back is decreasing and not much is coming out of it he got three rushing touchdowns against Richmond in game two one rushing touchdown against Central Michigan in game one after game two he never had another touchdown that's how bad Michigan State's offense was that wasn't on Nathan Carter is Nathan Carter an elite running back no he's not he was he's better than Jaylen Berger he's better than jiren mangham who's making a return he's not Kenneth Walker though he he's in between Jaylen Berger and Kenneth Walker I'd like to St closer to Kenneth Walker but The Supporting Cast last year was so bad and because I really like him not just as a player but as a person I don't know if that's exactly objective of me to say so I'm just going to say that Carter is a good great running back that with a better Supporting Cast you particularly will get a better Supporting Cast with Aiden ches starting at quarterback along with the upgrades at offensive line he could have a very good season and finally the staff Mike McDonald worked under Chris Peterson at Boise State in Washington was Oregon State's head strength and conditioning coach under Jonathan Smith he's the strength and conditioning coach he's one of the best in the business Jonathan Smith is head coach brought his offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach Brian Lindgren with him Lindgren coordinated an offense that was successful particularly at running the ball despite not having good quarterback play until last season whether it is Chance Nolan or gosh I I'm for I'm forgetting the quarterbacks who played at Oregon State under Jonathan Smith because some of them honestly were forgettable but I remember chance Nolan there were a few other guys who got considerable playing time in 21 and 22 a 23 with DJ uay and Aiden Charles Oregon state had pretty good to Great quarterback play at the best and that really helped open up their offense they just had a tough schedule and Smith I honestly checked out toward the end of the season I think that's why they went eight and4 when I think the ceiling of their team was the highest it had ever been at Oregon State under Jonathan Smith Jo rosi comes in from Minnesota where he fielded two Elite defenses back to back back in 21 and 22 his defense had some struggles Questions for MSU last season but when Minnesota was outside of the top 100 in returning production and they don't recruit at a very high level in fact they recruit at one of the lowest levels in the Big 10 their team Talent composite last year outside of the top 50 you are going to have regression you just are what are some negative questions though and I use that phrasing because Michigan state is look they're going to they're going to be rebuilding this year Jonathan Smith isn't walking into what Chiron Moore is at Michigan or what kin dbor is at Alabama or even what Kirby Smart walked into at Georgia when he took over for Mark richt if I forgot his name I'm tired but e even so if I forgot his name that would have been heresy or what Steve sarkeesian walked into after Tom Herman was fired or even what dbos swinny walked into and Tommy Bowen resigned even though Tommy Bowen was misusing all the talent he had at Clemson Jonathan Smith is walking into a tough situation where Michigan State originally again after 2021 many thought them to be ahead of the game with nil ahead of the game in the transfer portal ahead of the game in innovation Mel Tucker was not ahead of the game neither was the staff they hit on Kenneth Walker they hit on look Jacob Slade Jacob panes shook Simeon Barrow Jaden Reed even Payton Thorne those are all players that marked Antonio either scouted or directly recruited to Michigan State and some of them he even got them to enroll a lot of the best players for Mel Tucker were Mark anonio recruits that just fit in somehow or some some way with Mel Tucker's staff with his scheme that benefited some way or somehow from his strength and conditioning and Kenneth Walker was an elite player those things magic in a bottle but there was never going to be any consistency that came from it so in year one unless there is an act of God Michigan state will be faced with issues there will be frustrations there's no reason to expect this team to be a top 10 top 15 top 20 team no reason to expect that at all they may have the potential to be top 25 dare I say it I almost want to say higher but we'll get to that in a few minutes the two deep roster at quarterback is entirely made up of transfers how will Chiles and also Tommy Schuster who's transferring in from North Dakota how will they fair in Big 10 play Aiden childes played along with starter DJ young childes was just mainly used as a wrinkle and and given experience they played in a tough Pack 12 Oregon State played Utah Elite defense they played Washington who had a good defense they played Oregon who had a good/ great defense trying to think who else they played they played Arizona who had a respectable defense and they those are the teams that mainly I think of that stick out to me all those teams all of them by the way outside of Utah but Oregon Washington Arizona those teams finished ranked and Oregon State finished the year eight and4 they played Notre Dame in the bowl game lost they finished eight and five but Aiden ches wasn't even playing in that bowl game by then he already announced that he was going to transfer to Michigan State Tommy Schuster played in the FCS level he's mainly transferring I think to add depth be a respect respectable second Stringer just in case of emergency oh Oregon state did also play UCLA and they won that game comfortably that team had an awesome defense and Oregon state scored 36 points so that's five teams that whether it's from a defensive standpoint and that matters because Aiden Giles only plays the defense he does not face opposing offenses or in in the case of a team overall Oregon State played like five respectable Pack 12 teams either because they had a great defense or they were a great team overall but the Big 10 is different the Big 10 is the best defensive League it just is they're the best trench play league how will ches handle that he's going to be playing secondaries in Ohio State and Michigan that will be among the best in the country oh Michigan St also plays Iowa so that's three secondaries who are littered with All-American and NFL players and let me look at Michigan State's 2024 schedule again they'll play Oregon who will have an underrated secondary with Jabar Muhammad and Jalil Florence I don't think it'll be an elite secondary but it'll certainly be great and ruter at the end of the season and Purdue with Dylan thaman so they'll they'll play some great secondaries the quarterbacks will specifically Aiden childes and ruter Michigan Iowa Oregon Ohio State those are five schools that will have Elite really defenses for the most part especially Michigan Ohio State and Iowa in Illinois with what they return on defense and potentially I mean i' say potentially Purdue again with Dylan thean the the Big 10 I'm stuttering here and pausing because there's just so much to think about the Big 10 is lit it is it's a it's a tough conference so how will these quarterbacks and how will the offense overall handle that including the wide receiver position three starting wide receivers are going to the portal or graduation so who will step up there and to answer that question it's really using the same points as quarterback cuz it's wide receiver it's the passing game they're going to be facing plenty of elite secondaries plenty of elite defenses elante Brown comes back monter Foster Jr does Nick Marsh stayed committed to Michigan State got to thank Coleman Hawkins and harlon Barnett for that jiren Glover and Antonio Gates Jr also make up the wide receiver core but this looks to be a pretty thin unit and a weak unit in my opinion I think the tight end room is stronger this is probably the weakest unit on the the entire offense but someone has to step up if the offense wants to be successful and I think Courtney Hawkins is a good wide receivers coach and I think that Brian Lindgren and Jonathan Smith are great offensive Minds so I think as a result of that someone will have to step up so who does comment who you think will down in the comments section below I would be inclined to say that monory Foster Jr would step up if not him than either jiren Glover or Antonio Gates Jr but Nick Marsh will probably see some playing time with how thin the room is maybe the Spartans will get another wide receiver or two in the spring transfer portal window though see these things can change pretty quickly because of the transfer portal the depth situation and finally last but certainly not least Michigan State secondary has been the worst in the Big 10 for 3 years in a row dead last in the Big 10 in I think all three seasons but that's off the top of my head I I know for a fact that was the case in 21 and I think so this year and last year but I'm unsure they finished dead last in the Big 10 I believe three years in a row in defensive passer efficiency rating and if not exactly dead last they were pretty close will the defensive backs improve under coach Adams blue Adams was Oregon States defensive backs coach under Jonathan Smith he's the new secondary coach from Michigan State and Oregon's Corner coach was hired um dimetri Martin was hired to the same position at Michigan State to coach the cornerbacks there so you kind of have two eyes on the corners just a a specific Focus there that's been a that's been the the big weakness Michigan state has had players at safety whether at one point not Jordan Hall I'm there was someone at safety someone who was Darius snow he went from safety to linebacker he was an okay below average safety Malik Spencer and Jaden mangham those are decent players Jaden mangham in fact led the team in interceptions with four last year he also had three passes defended a fumble recovery 53 total tackles Angelo gross who who will start at Nickelback and who's also coming back last year he had 72 total tackles a half sack five passes defended and two interceptions secondary has been awful a group that I haven't mentioned a ton here just want to touch on them for a few seconds as linebacker Wayne Matthews III and Jordan Turner are transferring in Jordan Hall had an awesome true freshman season and Cal Halliday Darius snow and Aaron Alexander return to make up the projected too deep linebacker's been up and down but the secondary has been far worse now Jaden Mangum Malik Spencer Dylan Tatum chance Rucker those are all Mel Tucker recruits all of them Charles Brantley was a true freshman in 2021 another Mel Tucker recruit Angelo gross I'm pretty sure was a Mel Tucker recruit maybe he's like one of the last marked Antonio recruits I don't know rer senior could mean he's a sixth year or fifth year player depending on if he's used the co year or not um but the secondary does have more experience than it did last season and Jaden Mangum and Dylan Tatum were four stars out of high school so can a better staff quickly turn this secondary around will they improve I'd say yes the question is like a lot of other areas that I think will improve whether that's for Michigan State or for a team like USC for example whose defense I think will improve how much will it 39:23 My Expectations For Michigan State + Early Preview improve but overall I think the expectations for the Spartans are go bowling improve from last year don't lose to Michigan lose to Penn State or lose to Ohio State by five touchdowns or more play in some close games go bowling utilize the 31 incoming players and and returning about six out of 10 of your production from last year being in the middle of the road there and your staff utilize all these things to build a respectable team who can compete at a level that melt Tucker teams couldn't against Ohio State or truly Elite teams like melt Tucker and his 2021 Michigan state sparts that was a good team that was a magic team that team would not have beaten Michigan in 2023 or 2022 they wouldn't have they wouldn't have even competed with this year's Michigan team in my humble opinion and they didn't compete with Ohio State in 21 I don't think they would have competed with Ohio State in 22 or 23 either and I think this year's Penn State team this past season's Penn State team with their their defense I don't think Kenneth Walker would have been running through through that defense with the o line and coordinator and Supporting Cast that he had 2021 Michigan State I think would have can't exactly say maybe some of these hypotheticals would be fun for a video they probably would have had three or four regular season losses as opposed to two and if you're Jonathan Smith if you're Michigan City if you're Allen Hower who I think's done a good job as athletic director trying to chase championships and build a a elite athletic culture and Elite Athletics program you want Michigan State to be back to where they were during the peak of the dantonio era competing for Big 10 championships and how do you start that how do you start getting on track to make that goal happen you go bowling this year you improve the Improvement starts now you rip up everything from the rotten foundation and you still comp compete and I think Michigan State can do that with the transfer portal class they're bringing in with some of the talented freshmen they're bringing in out of high school with the staff that is working in East Lancing right now day and night with the returning experience and the veteran a seate key positions that Michigan state has the offense in particular I think must show Improvement the defense the Personnel under Scotty Hazelton outside of maybe the secondary I don't think was the problem I think it was his coaching his coaching his play calling his term as coordinator was awful similar for Jay Johnson except I don't think J Johnson recruited as well nor did he have the same pieces to start out with because Mark Antonio and his staff still developed well and recruited good enough on the defensive side completely neglecting the offense so Jay Johnson was the worst coordinator between him and Hazelton though that's a a pretty a tight race for not just worst coordinator for Michigan State but worst coordinator in the Big 10 last year J Johnson at the same time also started out from a worse Point um in conclusion the offense in terms of depth in terms of preparation in terms of development is just terrible all around which is why you're seeing transfers come in at quarterback at tight end on the offensive line a running back with Nathan Carter was one of the few bright spots wide receivers transferred out Tyrell Henry did um I forget who I forget who else one one other one other wide receiver transferred out I forget his name he was he was tall long Trey Mosley he's ran out of Eligibility and all three quarterbacks in Kon Hower Sam lit and Noah Kim transferred out because none of them are as good they don't even come close to Aiden childes Sam leave it well in the future he could have been developed well but I think he left due to a a dislike at least if my memory serves me correctly of Jonathan Smith not offering him when he was a high school recruit the offense I think needs to show Improvement and the defense has to be a respected Big 10 unit and returning the majority of their starters and adding some key transfers I think that is likely some of my predictions for the 2024 season are Michigan state will go bowling this year they have the potential to shoot higher as well this schedule is tough Michigan state starts off the season August 31st hosting Florida at Atlantic pardon me they play on the road at Maryland September 7th they host priew A&M September 14th play at Boston College September 21st host Ohio State September 28th and they play at Oregon October 5th before having a Buy on the 12th host Iowa off of the Buy on the 19th play at Michigan the 26th host Indiana the 2 they have their second and final buy of the Season November 9th they play at Illinois November 16th host Purdue November 23rd and they host Rutgers November 30th I think that Michigan State right now they're obviously better than Florida Atlantic Prav waym and I think even Boston College as Boston College lost some production and they also lost their coach Jeff Halley they don't have nearly the staff or even the onfield talent that Michigan state does I think that Michigan State's in a better position than Maryland is returning production and staff-wise I think they're in a better position than Indiana it's five teams I named where Michigan State's in a better position then and I think it's similar to Purdue that's six and Illinois as well which is seven and Iowa and ruter are beatable teams they're at home those are teams that will play in close games and therefore Michigan State upsetting those teams I think would be likely uh but Michigan on the road that's that's tough Oregon on the road that's tough familiar territory for Jonathan Smith also hostile territory and Ohio State's had Michigan's number and that's the most talented team in the conference and they have a bone to pick with everyone because they want to win the Big 10 for the first time since 2020 so they have a chance to shoot higher maybe be a top 25 team but that's ambitious that's bold I think it's more safe to say that Michigan state will just go bowling they'll boast a good combination of Rush offense and Rush defense in 2024 I think that the ground game will be the strength of both the offensive and the defensive side of the ball special teams will be good as well with Ryan eckle at punter and Jonathan Kim returning at kicker I think Jonathan Kim will be one of the better kickers in the Big 10 the secondary will improve as well by how much I don't know but I'd say there's more likely to be substantial Improvement rather than marginal Improvement and Aiden Chiles will be one of the big 10's better quarterbacks he will be in the top fourth of big 10 quarterbacks which roughly translates him to being a top four top five Big 10 quarterback and that's not just because I think he's good and that he has good development the Big 10 is going to have an extremely weak season with quarterbacks and that will be another video that I will make I think the Big 10 quarterbacks in terms of ceiling will be worse than last year and definitely worse than 22 and 21 when strad was around same goes for 2020 2019 and even 2018 when you had fields and Dwayne H Haskins starting for Ohio State rest in peace to him and on an average basis I'd have to dig more in depth is Dow big quarterbacks have performed on an average basis but it wouldn't shock me if this was one of the more inferior Seasons even for average play for Big 10 quarterbacks all around that's all I have to say for this video thank you for watching make sure to subscribe to the channel click the notification Bell and comment your thoughts down below thanks again to crash 2488 for sponsoring
