Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles Named Captain As An 18-Year-Old Underclassman!

some Michigan State football news that I think is great news if you're a fan of Michigan State football and who this player is going to be aen Charles the O Oregon State transfer who came along with Jonathan Smith and has won the starting quarterback job is a captain on the 2024 Michigan State Spartans football team now in a vacuum I don't think that should be crazy surprising but when you step back broadly he is an 18-year-old kid with zero starts in college football he was a backup last season very talented we know this a dual threat and by all accounts he's been if not the best player definitely one of the best players on Michigan State but uh for his peers to have voted him a captain for this upcoming season I think that's ahead of schedule from what Michigan State football fans even the most optimistic ones would have expected does this bode well for Michigan State basketball that they're 18-year-old technically a a sophomore but for all playing purposes really a freshman quarterback Aiden Charles is a captain on this team I think so I mean U this is a so like we discussed it we discussed it last week I believe it was um in terms of like Jonathan Smith and his office and may I said like you know he might not be there long um and like although I do think this plays into my opinion on that where it's like he's going to he's like I brought my guys in I'm not here to necessarily coach Michigan State I'm here to coach my guys I think this shows a changing of the culture if you wanted him to stay longterm this is it like he is bringing his guys in he's gonna win his way and he's going to continue to move forward and he's kind of getting rid of he's getting rid of the trash of being completely honest Michigan State hasn't been good the last couple years you know Deion Sanders said his best I'm bringing my bags in there Louie and I think Aiden child is phenomenal phenomenal phenomenal football player and most importantly I'm just I'm a big your quarterback should be your captain yeah yeah we we like that I know you and I have talked about through the year like if you're if the guy who plays the most important position on the field isn't like a leader for you that usually boats poorly uh to that point flip this with Ohio State who will Howard is stepping in we talked about this in a different video too will Howard steps in talking about I don't need to do everything I'm just here along for the ride so much talent like yeah that's great you got talent around you but like give me the guy who's a dog at quarterback that's like I'm going to go Elevate this by all accounts uh look Aiden Charles is a talent but he's also a guy who is like stepping in to the spotlight getting it behind the microphone in front of the cameras and looking people in the eyes and being like I'm ready for this and that is noticeable especially when you're going through a rebuild because you don't always have those guys sometimes it would be really easy to be uncertain of this new situation with a bunch of new players who have never played together with a coach who's never been at this school coming off of what Michigan State went through last year so much turnover so much trauma it's it's noticeable that the best player on the team is looking everybody in the eyes even if he's young and being like I'm the guy let's go and his peers recognize it I think it can only be interpreted as a good thing uh Justin thind who is a friend of the show we love Justin thin uh he had a tweet he was the one who kind of broke this news as far as I know yesterday um I'm just going to read his tweet huge honor for Michigan State quarterback Aiden Charles to be named 2024 Captain for an 18-year-old with zero career starts to get that nod in his first year at a new school one must have tremendous leadership skills and great respect from his teammates I agree with everything that's been said through that point in the Tweet then he drops this sentence at the end he says would guess this has to be a first in college football is this a first in college football history that an 18-year-old who turns 19 in a week in sophomore is named a captain uh no right like there's no way it is that was my takeaway when I first read the quote like there's no way I also like I'm not saying I disagree with the beginning half of his statement but how much of that is just the fact that he's playing at Michigan State like Trevor Lawrence was a named captain as an 18yearold right but that's because he was backing up uh what's his name at Clemson and then you have Tua and all these guys that backed people up at Alabama and on you know my favorite quarterback in the Country Arch Manning would also be the captain at Michigan State if he was there instead of backing up Quin right so like although like everything can be correct about Aiden Charles from the first half of the statement part of the reason it's happening is that it's at Michigan State like Aiden Charles is not he is not the captain of the Georgia or Alabama football team this year with all due respect yeah it's it's both a good and a bad thing and Skeptics can point to this and be like that just shows you how dog the team is I think that would be a rude negative way to look at it because Aiden Charles is very good but yeah like if your 18year old is the leader of your team that means you don't have any veterans that don't you don't have any veterans that are worth leading the team so that that's good for the new era it's a very good thing down the line big picture uh for this year's specific team don't know that I buy this as great news I mean great that Aiden is hitting the ground running but would love to have a veteran leader in the locker room as well and uh without knowing who the other captains are I kind of ignored it who do we got here we got Nate Carter the running back uh Tanner Miller offensive lineman Jordan Turner linebacker Maverick Hansen defensive line I guess there's your vet leaders but yeah I don't know like in the short term it might not be the greatest thing for the record I did do some digging on uh th's the second part of thin tweet on how rare is this um it is pretty rare as far as I can tell like a guy who has not started at all at this age being named captain I can't really find another example of recent examples in history uh Kurt Cousins as an incoming softmore was named a captain at Michigan State so you had a Michigan State quarterback like a decade ago at this age that was named uh there was a Purdue defensive lineman named Nick scouton uh I think this was either last the year before who had played and been really good as a freshman and then still as an 18-year-old going into his sophomore year was named but pretty unprecedented for a guy who truly hasn't played like Jaden Daniels 18-year-old sophomore Captain but Jaden Daniels was a superstar as a 17-year-old freshman so Charles is just the only one who hasn't been a superstar yet that got this not and that's interesting is that not like like when I think of this it's not just like oh we're missing like vet leadership from the captain perspective like it tells me more about the QB room like I know I know this is the coach's guy right like that this was the whole like he went to Michigan State Aiden followed a few days later right so like obviously he was going to be the starter but with the way the transfer portal works like you're telling me there wasn't a single vet QB that wanted to play at Michigan State you know what I mean like there wasn't a single one uh um ultimately I think Aiden Charles is really really good I think Michigan states are gonna Michigan State fans are going to love him for the next couple years I think he's going to want up being an NFL guy I looked up his high school stats absolutely phenomenal but I mean it's just you know I think but it's a both can be true thing like this was the best case scenario for Michigan State where their 18-year-old star player is the captain and he's very clearly the best player on the roster with that in mind it also says something about the rest of the roster as well yeah uh I think Aiden's going to be fantastic this year yeah they just need to be like seven and five while he's being fantastic for us to all feel great about it but I think that's within the realm of
