What will Jonathan Smith's first year as Michigan State Head Coach look like? | ALL Big Ten Podcast

I don't know if you caught the news the other day they were interviewing new freshly minted quarterback Aiden Charles and was asking him about what he was thinking wins and losses with the team and he said bet the over um which I don't know if an NCAA violation is in play there but he said it twice bet the over so Cory I'm gonna ask you uh where are you Landing right now in Michigan State let's start at the top are you betting the over with Michigan State I'm going to bet the under uh I think with all the turmoil that's been going on with Michigan State I think it's been a tough thing I think I think Carter is such a talented back but I just I just don't know if they have all the pieces to the puzzle to really get things going that offensive line too Cory is yeah the offensive line I I feel like when I was in college they had a pretty good offensive line I think it like dropped off as of late they've had some really good running backs um they have some good skill positions but I think the offensive line especially in Big 10 football Joey that's how you win the game so with everything that's been going on with their program I think it's I think it's tough I think they were going in a good direction everything that happened with Mel Tucker I think that that kind of uh you know made everything a lot harder but um I think it's going to be another tough year for them they're they're in a rebuild they're trying to get things going and I'm gonna have to bet the under I'm gonna have to go against Charles and uh even though he said it twice I'll say it another time I'm gonna bet the under well Ed look coach Jonathan Smith's coming over from Oregon State I like him a lot I think it was a really great hire for the program right but these things don't happen overnight just the same way that I think some might debate that Aiden childes might be one of the more talented quarterbacks in the Big 10 are we going to see that happen in September and October I'm not so sure the running game was awful last year even though I'm agreeing with you I think Carter is a great back just comes down in offensive line issues and look they have to kind of just get I don't want to say ducks because that's an Oregon thing they have to get their stuff in a row here for a year or two coming off of what happened with Mel Tucker last year it was a complete disaster it fell apart Spartans fans you all know what I'm talking about and look I mean the defense was okay right but when they played better teams like Washington they put up 713 total yards on them Ohio State and Penn stain combined for 1100 I mean look like Corey like that's the problem right is some of these games are just going to get out of hand with Michigan State and they're going to get blown out of some games it's just hard to these are kids it's gonna hard to keep that momentum on a week- toe basis I think so too and I'm looking at their schedule right now Joey and I think Florida Atlantic's a winnable game right priew um maybe Purdue right depending on how it could swing but I think those right now I have them at three three definite definite wins uh other than that I feel like it's a tough schedule for them right Maryland's very competitive Boston College Ohio State right they're they're the reigning favorites Oregon's going to be a tough game Iowa now they have the offensive coordinator situation figured out that's going to be a tough game Michigan right even though they graduate scrappier like it's I just see Illinois is gonna be a lot better um Ruckers is gonna be good I think I think right now I have them with three wins uh other than that I'm I think maybe maybe Indiana is the is the other other team there in Illinois where it could go either way but I I don't think so yeah definitely a possible 50-50 game there and I look Aiden Charles I think he's going to be something that that Spartans fans are going to be able to root for at the quarterback position which I don't think they've had a ton to root for at that spot for quite some time but again freshman again you got to let him kind of go through the bumps navigate his first season throughout the Big 10 and then maybe next year here going to the portal again try and get a little bit better and then we can kind of talk about them is kind of getting into that middle pack so Joey you think in your opinion right Michigan state was kind of on up and up when Mel Tucker was there they were really starting to to and then all of a sudden they got deflated um like Tom Brady's uh footballs for the the flake gate right kind of like that that's that's the direction that went over your head for a second well you know I uh I will tell you that um we saw also here in Northwestern last year so uh that's not exactly going to be it's going to be tough sledding I think a little bit for Michigan State and look I think Jonathan Smith I'm going to say it again is a good coach just going to need a little bit of time
