server you can join a nice friendly chat Community Linked In the description field and let's get on to the solve we these are Sunday puzzles they take a while we shouldn't waste much time so it is entitled is there an echo in here um we'll find out what that means momentarily it's by John koulman who's constructed around half a dozen puzzles for the New York Times it was edited once again by Joel felano and let's start solving we'll see what this is all about maybe something about duplicated letters or words or something like that loses one's shirt say um I mean this is usually meant to refer to a financial loss but but I I don't have a guess as to what it is swept style hair style swept style I A Part as in your hair is parted or a swept style it's sort of swept up um chemical formula for lie I don't know actually what the chemical formula for Li is oil container oil drum probably um let's see if that works with this resistance unit yes I think ohms are units of resistance so does that help with this swept style okay yeah so it could be swept it could be an updo um your hair is up sort of swept up so does that help with this loose loses one's shirt say oh no it okay it isn't defin a lot no it's very straightforward it just undresses I think probably with that U and that D so okay so you're actually quite literally getting rid of your shirt so the chemical formula oh is it NaOH I mean I recognize that as a chemical form formula for something fairly common let's see if that works um sodium oxygen hydrogen I guess uh city with a cowboy hat wearing replica of the Eiffel Tower is it is it Paris Texas um there is a Paris Texas which I like many people I know about because of the Vim vendor film um but maybe they have they probably have this cowboy hat wearing replica of the Eiffel Tower there we go needle if you needle someone you rib them you kind of mock them a bit and tisk tisk or that kind of sound would be doubt oh so maybe that's the echo is that is that the clue has a repeated word I don't know the answer though night school so oh no it isn't it isn't this it's double something because night school subject would be ESL or English as a second language and then here we have basil of St an to Detroit um historic Michigan Landmark um so St is the abbreviation is the feminine abbreviation for Saint in French all right three may keep a blank if two of them are dead three may keep a secret if two of them are dead Benjamin Franklin very good yeah that is accurate all right over the counter brand that promises guaranteed relief every time oh is it xlax the laxative could be so then what would this be oh double click right okay because this is a representation of clicking your tongue which I think I kind of did that sort of disapproving uh tongue click okay so yeah that's actually pretty straightforward so I wonder we'll probably have different ways of saying double we probably won't say double in all of these answers but we'll refer to the fact that there are have a punny reference to a doubled clue we'll find out if that's what's happening but I think it probably is put forth if you put something forth you set it half a rhyming genre name SCI for sci-fi science fiction and Alaskan salmon Hunters kodiaks that's a that's a bear bears sort of famously catch salmon and eat it so um I think that's probably right what 104 and over are used in they're used in radio lingo probably kind of language used in radio communication flaky oh maybe maybe this is wrong because flaky mineral I would think would be something like Micah in four letters so maybe not that what about this Mirror Image question mark self as in you look in a mirror and you see yourself I'm not sure but let's try it exploit a deed so exploit could be a verb obviously but exploit is um pronounced that way is a noun so something you've accomplished your deed your exploits Feats so let's see if that works hold wheat what is after you've H wheat what are you left with h I'm not sure what the answer to this is probably should be but I'm not uh steaming with off if you're teed off maybe you're angry you're steaming does that help with what ton for and over are used in radio I don't know I'm not confident about self actually paper saving invoice Oh e file no e Bill yes okay I've never heard the phrase e bill this is an ew that I'm I'm slightly skeptical of I've never said heard someone say send me an e bill or I got the E you just say the bill you you say email it to me or something um but anyway guess the idea is you get an invoice rically rather than on paper all right well there we go we' I have noticed we we don't get as many ew as we used to although there was one the other day Brian in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame here we go it's the official male solo artist of the New York Times crossword at Brian Eno counterpart to the uh I would say even more frequent um Yoko Ono all right 11 or two ones one I want I want the first word to be one just because it would fit oops let's see if it does big name and allergy medication oh I have no idea never really had to deal with allergies fortunately uh not sure thuing noise can imagine this ending with an an oh benad dril maybe is that for that seems like it might be is it with iron well I think it might be a y there so what would the reason I got to that is because I was thinking a th noise might just end in onk just sounds like it kind of would be that sort of noise but what is it is it a thonk maybe I don't know basic no it isn't because a basic skateboarding trick would be an OE there we go it's a a simple skate well I say simple I couldn't do one uh but I think relative to many skateboarding tricks it's one of the more basic ones so thuing noise plonk probably you plon it down th it down kind of salad with hard-boiled eggs um not sure off hand this is looks like Senator or representative AG uh so these are legislators in the United States Congress so um politicians or politicos P probably politicians in this case um that's probably what P would be an abbreviation of I mean and because Senator and representative are both abbreviated the answer is inferred to be as well so does that work with this kind of salad with hard-boiled eggs this is probably obvious but I can't think what it is what cognitive behavioral therapy can treat in brief that is one of the ways that PTSD or post-traumatic uh stress disorder is treated so there we go owl or whipper will EG um oh bird uh obviously some kind of bird what about oh no this is this is this is not is it Clon thuing noise Clon this is definitely Brian Eno clonk is that a thuing noise I've never heard that word before I think it must be because um a kind of salad with hard-boiled eggs now that we have that b in there it's a cob I at least recognize that name um I'm sure I've had a cob salad a few times uh so there we go okay well Clon I guess that's the th noise new to me but it sounds appropriate owl or whipper will right so are they night birds do you call them night birds let's see rear as in your rear legs of an animal would be it's hind legs clarified butter ghee is um clarified butter used in Indian Cuisine and poo poo question mark so probably we're related we're because we're doubling our kind of theme word um it's probably related to Winnie the Pooh so this bear oh this bear is repeating there we go that's very clever I like that one a lot uh that's very good this bear is repeating because we're repeating this bear Winnie the Pooh very good okay so oh what's this going to be one after another it is yes okay I was just thinking about doubled things so 11 one way you could describe 11 is one after another there two ones in a row there we go very good uh honold who was the first to free solo climb El capiton oh I watched a documentary about this guy was it was that the film called free solo I think Alex honold or was it about someone who was inspired by him I actually I think was about Alex Honnold anyway I watch that back when it came out um be next to to a but something would be to sit next to it to be next to it mgm's aply named mascot Leo the Lion is the lion who Roars at the beginning of MGM films um you're on it's a bet you could say you're on it's a we're going to wager home of kurdistan's easternmost region so Kurdistan sort of overlaps um more than one country and Iran would be uh is one of them okay uh because it's a sort of a historical cultural region as opposed to a state all right knock knock um all right something Duo knock Duo of KNX what is the a rap Duo because you're wrapping on the door you're knocking on the door so it's a it's two wraps uh of knock and then of course rap Duo is a phrase uh that would refer to two rappers very good or you know a team of two rappers uh Ravenclaw um Talon the claw of a raven is literally a Talon I don't know why that was initially uh confusing to me um vital spark would be your spirit maybe your vital spark in you and then first tier is a celeb would be an A-list celebrity there we go oh this doesn't look right though does it plugs ADL oh a list I misspelled it sorry plugs or ads as an advertisement so if you plug something you sort of advertise it or promote it okay so I think we've looked at all the rest of everything in here yeah all right built on if something is if you've built on something you've added on built on added on not sure part of a baby's nighttime routine okay I'm not sure I'm I'm going to go back up to the top what 104 and oh this is that bit okay let's look up here we've not yet made much progress flaky mineral so let's see if tal Works does it radio I don't know no T wasn't even what I said I wanted to say Micah let's see if that works oh yeah it does because radio speak would be an example of 104 and over there we go or rather those would be an example of radio speak okay great so spelt spelt that's that's the name for H weed okay I recognize it now that I see it not surprised I didn't get it off the bat but there we go all right buddy buddy second uh buddy second pal second friend second Chum I can't think videography option on a smartphone I don't know what that's about wild if you're running wild you're running a mock you're sort of out of control that that it's fine friends star to [Music] friends um Jen for Jennifer Aniston maybe yes primarily studies majors in uh so if you study something at you know University you could say to major in it or people just can just use that phrase generally to refer to something that they focus on okay friends star to friends so I think it probably is Jen um anti- deluvian would be uh I think it literally means Before the Flood but um but you use it just to mean old in general run into to run into someone maybe to Ram them in a vehicle or something does that work with this videography option on a smartphone oh timlapse oh is there are there time lapse I've never actually tried to shoot a time lapse video um you know sort of very very long video that's then played back fast so you see the time change more quickly than than in real time um Carnival attraction that propels its Riders Skyhigh uh space something or not sure buddy buddy oh second mate that's what it is so yeah um phrase for you know the someone's you know right hand on a ship but in the this case we have an example of a word for mate a buddy that is seconded all right uh colon in analogies is is to so you have in analogies the format you know sort of a is to B as X is to Y and the is to is represented by a colon call for call for is a need to call for something is to need it cod liver oil is famously a dietary supplement that I feel is also in at least in sort of children's I don't know kind of literature in television used to describe something disgusting Carnival attraction that propels its Rider Sky High it does look like space doesn't it I don't know what the answer is site at Sydney's yearly Festival of the Winds an Obel as an wind instrument not sure nine oh no it's not that because nine credited roles in Barbie these are all going to be the Kens I think um uh you know the various different incarnations of Ken who were play in the film so then what would this be oh kite maybe is it a kite flying Festival that would make sense as well so let's look at this texter's hedge IMO in my opinion bit of ink familiarly could be a tat a tattoo often referred to as ink they keep people in the dark don't know but it probably ends with s uh Mademoiselle of Madrid so madelle means Miss in French the equivalent of that in Spanish would be senorita so there we go and we've abbreviated it because madelle is abbreviated so we'll abbreviate our answer as well all right to go for something is to opt for it to choose it and if something didn't spoil as in if food didn't spoil it kept it's still good they keep people in the dark oh masks eye masks there we go to help you sleep for instance humorist bomback Arma bomback is a humorist who's occasionally clued in the New York Times I don't know if if it's enough to be the official humorist of the New York Times crossword but if there were such a title she would be in the running talks incessantly if you talk incessantly you Yak so there we go Diamond authorities um oh no maybe it isn't Yaks it's yaps because I assume this is referring to a baseball diamond so umps as in umpires are these sort of authorities in a baseball game and so talks incessantly is yaps all right up to if you're up to something you're as uh or it could be up to as in as in I'm up to it I'm able to do it or it could be up to as in I'm interested I'm game or it could be up to as in that's what I'm doing that's what I'm up to right now it's what I'm in the process of doing I'm not sure which it is Jovian Moon uh Europa um that's a moon of Jupiter um so there we go Jo you know uh Joan referring to to of you know of Jupiter um big step for a startup for short an IPO I suppose at which point I guess it's no longer a startup it's a publicly traded company because it's gone through an initial public offering and it is listed on public stock markets um it Bears no eological relation to Conifer surprisingly oh fur so right even though fur trees are coniferous trees those words have different linguistic Origins there we go atmology is always sort of it's almost always surprising and unintuitive up to oh it's none none of the things I was saying you could say well up to a point or as far as a point you know um up to this point this is what I decided to do as far as that goes that sort of thing or you could just say run up to the house run as far as the house that's actually the most much more straightforward way to interpret this that's what I should have given as my example so there we go all right camera opening is Aperture that's um how much light is being let into the camera uh well it's the the aperture I guess is the is the actual sort of hole that lets light in but you can adjust the size of it to let more or less light in to expose the image differently anyway places to let out anger by Smashing objects would be oh I've heard of this rage rooms you sort of they give you I don't know a hammer or something and you can smash things to kind of something I think this is this is the sort of thing you can hire or sort of um buy a ticket too or something anyway state with a five-sided flag is it Ohio I think it must be based on the crossing letters that's interesting a five-sided oh right yes because it it's a rectangle but there's a kind of uh angled indentation on one end so yeah that's that's why it's five-sided nwa's Straight Out of Compton That's a classic um rap track not from a rap Duo but um but indeed from a rap group there we go so what did we fill in here oh this space shot okay I don't know that that's the carnival attraction that propels its Rider Sky High I'm not familiar with that that term space shot but there we go that must be what that's called that's just wrong uh no you might say with disgust or disdain maybe more accurately now I get it ah often how I feel solving these crosswords uh poor atol on the other side oh no it'll be o it'll be oo um so I guess now I get it is oh so same idea but there we go that's what it is this time so uh on the other hand in Spanish por okay queer identity for short um it could be it could be AO AO for a romantic which has come up I think maybe I remember seeing it probably twice maybe before in the New York Times puzzle once or twice so it could be the answer by Jo e gads that's funny because we actually had a reference to uh Jovian now I can't remember what it is but where it is here we go Europa the moon of Jupiter there we go um so yeah you know by Jo by God Jupiter lead in uh Zeus lead into nautical aeronautical is a word and then show up perhaps oh if you right okay so not show up as in appear but show up as in outdo someone to one up them there we go uh school with campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai New York University maybe with that y there wouldn't be surprising to me if NYU had overseas campuses fashion designer Anna oh Anna s sui I have seen that name okay core exercise done lying down um not sure Park worker uh not sure about that either built on also not sure output of some refrigerators output what are they output ice Maybe you know some refrigerators have an ice dispenser in the door so that that might be it key of Mozart's Symphony Number 40 uh must be G minor I mean I wouldn't have been able to tell you that off the top of my head but we had the G so we knew that and then we knew whether it was major or minor because we already had the I there so there we go all right else uh what else or if else not sure glow to to um what's the word to kind of scorn is not is not the word we're looking for we're looking for a word that also means to kind of look at somebody in a scornful way in five letters with that c to Glow to can't think all right online crafts Marketplace is Etsy the website from which you can buy things that people have made else still not sure about that ow ow there's not very much room in the answer here is there ow [Music] ow it could be something my first thought was two something two ows but that's not anything could be by something like by I don't know that much is obvious I'm not sure about this whole little area here oh Corsica and so course are Isles or E and French um were sort of clued into the uh so I mean I guess we'd say probably Reunion Island in English but uh the accent there sort of Clues Us in that we're referring to the French island of leun so I think that's I think this is probably the answer um and then Corsica more more frequently uh probably more frequently discussed in English um that's where Napoleon is from anyway else is not or if oh if not yes else otherwise if not there we go that's what it is part of 115 down 115 down is seol's school this will be seal School of Florida maybe because this could be F which I think is an abbreviation for Florida so could be something like Florida State University I think I think geographically it would make sense for seals to be Associated for that to be a team name in Florida so let's see if that works with this ow ow all ows because then you make the word [Music] allows it's strange to repeat a word from the clue and the answer though so I'm not think it's although this although the Clower is a scowl that's the word I was trying to get to that my brain wouldn't give me is allows oh that's very surprising if so if that that we're repeating the 's is that really the case I'm going to leave that blank for now we'll come back to it that much is obvious clearly yes key key near Control Alt um at least on a a Windows keyboard Tangled masses of hair are mattes of hair maybe so this does look like allows I'm very surprised by this ow ow all ows I think it must be the answer um trying to remember if I've seen this before I mean it's a theme clue so I guess there's more sort of leeway there but it is surprising okay I the crosses seem fine so I'm going to move on oh Tannon Bal and others uh those are Christmas carols so ootan and Bal as is the sort of German equivalent of uh O Christmas Tree and then Haggard fellow question mark meral Haggard is uh a person a singer I guess um so simple as that it's just a bit of light misdirection we're not referring to a person with a kind of tired exhausted appearance on the comeback Trail resurging or something maybe if if an artist is coming back into fashion maybe they're resurging they're on the comeback Trail Tiger's Target not sure group of buffalo herd I'm not sure about researching I'm going to put this away put it away I'm going to remove it delete it uh shock proof question mark I don't know what that's about payment before a deal anti so not a deal as in uh a business deal but a deal is in a dealing of cards you know you'll anti in the game so that you can be dealt cards um okay what else can we do uh George Lucas's original surname for Luke Skywalker uh I think this is Star Killer um I think his original sort of treatment or script for Star Wars rted as something like from The Adventures of Luke scar Star Killer or something like that uh but that that's uh that was it anyway dirty film smut I think that probably would be the case you know sort of pornographic film uh some turkeys and tabies uh Toms so male turkeys or male cats or Toms Lil Abner cartoonist oh uh is it cap Al cap was the I think that was the name of the cartoonist behind Lil Abner Al cap let's see if that holds up the Lincoln Memorial appeared on it until 2008 right okay I think I missed that it didn't anymore on the scent uh coin that's embarrassing not sure um I don't live in the US anymore and also I haven't really carried change in a long time anyway uh interesting I'll have to look that up word in the pneumonic egbdf uh oh okay so this is aonic for remember in um how the strings of a guitar are tuned and there are various different pneumonics that people use for this but the one that I remember is Every Good Boy Deserves fun I think uh no this isn't this isn't guitar string sorry because I was thinking that's not the pneumonic for guitar strings um which is with but also because these are not actually how the strings of a guitar are tuned this is a totally different tuning what is egbdf I think it's Every Good Boy Deserves fun um but I'm trying to remember what it corresponds to um e e g b d f it'll be tuning of some instrument I'm going completely blank cuz I was thinking Every Good Boy Deserves an egg it's the one that I had in mind um I don't know I can't think what this is referring to but anyway I think that's the Demonic that's embarrassing that I can't think what this is anyway Park worker question mark I'm not sure about this oh no I I am it's a valet or valet um someone who might park your car I mean that's really North American usage specifically is Val for that particular role but uh the pun is that they park your car so they're a worker who Parks as opposed to someone who works in a park like a park ranger something all right deliberately try to fail informally a tank sort of just intentionally throw the game or whatever ball that just grazes the bat perhaps is this I assume this is baseball related oh no maybe it's pool something B no no no no the bat isn't you wouldn't use that word explosive initials TNT there we go so obviously one of the one of if not the most famous explosive substance ball that just grazes the bat perhaps something tie or tip hubba hubba pair of hubba pair of pants I don't know why that would be the case yeah I'm not sure but now we do have some crosses so let's use them Hasty getaway lamb if you're on the lamb you're on you're fleeing from Justice I think this is again largely North American language success has always been the greatest something n uh success has always been the greatest liar there we go sort of sort of creates its own front I suppose all right there we go so does that help with this yes it does seasonal workers and Suits I don't think I've read this before but it's m Santas there we go it's very straightforward Tiger's Target still not sure about that okay what else can let see shock proof question mark proof of a shock I don't know gape maybe so you have a sort of gaping expression on your face because you've been shocked I'm not sure if that's right group of Buffalo not sure big supporter in modern slang could be Stan so an incredibly almost a sort of over enthusiastic fan drawn from the Eminem song Stan shock proof oh G but maybe same idea as what I was saying but uh a different piece of evidence I'm not I'm still not sure if this is right quiet hey oop it's a quiet way to get someone's attention this does look like pair of pants doesn't it why is that the case hubba oh because your P it's not pants as in what you're wearing it's pants well it is in terms of the the sort of phrase we've assembled but in the punny sense it's because hubba hubba is sort of exaggerated panting that's what's going on okay so kind of labored breathing all right that's what it is so group of Buffalo I have no idea what this is and then T and that's funny that we have pants right under gasp because gasping is kind of panting as well anyway Tiger's Target oh par is it Tiger Woods the golfer and he wants to to shoot par you know he wants to to um get the par number of Strokes or fewer okay so on the comeback Trail it's resurgent what did I say resurging maybe don't remember but anyway resurgent oh a gang is a group of Buffalo I didn't know that okay well there we go good well that makes everything else here look fine to me okay okay mopi looks like a very strange and implausible ending outpouring of an idea a something dump a brain dump is a is a just a unfiltered outpouring of an of ideas a official beer of the Boston Red Sox familiarly I I don't know Sam Adams maybe that's from Boston right so maybe this isn't smut does Sam Adams fit it does maybe that's dirt oh oh this is clever misdirection it's not dirty film meaning smut it's dirty film as in scum so on water for instance you could have a dirty kind of film kind of scum on the top all right I was completely misdirected by that successful so well done John golman okay okay question mark something copy uh something about it being sort of of average quality or something like that I don't know tell your ride maker this must be a vehicle made by KIA which I think is maybe familiar in the absolute Vagas sense to me I bet it's a sports utility vehicle or something like that anyway uh storm and strong so that's um you know kind of uh Hue and cry or or commotion um from the [Music] German initialism for except for exhibitionism uh oh PDA public display of affection so if you're sort of an exhibitionist you're kind of you know uh engaging in kind of acts of affection in public I guess that's kind of what that's getting at all right okay okay markup copy I don't see why that would be true abates e so if the tide abates it es it it lowers it reduces so okay okay backup copy backup okay I think that's probably the answer but I don't quite see why backup I don't get it Good Morning America coost Spencer I'm not sure looks like it could be Sarah uh one of the man no it isn't be maybe laara because one of the Mannings I have at least heard of the um NFL uh the sort of famous NFL Brothers the Mannings one of whom is Eli so there we go so this looks like Lara so I think this is backup copy I don't quite know why okay why is Okay backup I don't know I don't get it I'm sorry about that someone will have to explain it to me but it's probably very simple but I'm missing it there's the answer anyway filming Innovation used in The Shining steady cam uh this was one of the first films one of the very first I mean it might even have been the first or second film to use um steady cam which is the sort of um mechanism by which a camera operator can can move around freely with a camera and yet still keep it steady so that you don't get the sort of jerky handheld look and anyway Stanley kubric used it in The Shining uh great film built on um I'm not sure what that is off hand part of the baby's nighttime routine not sure about that either core exercise done lying down right I saw that and I also wasn't sure about this one word often followed by a Roman numeral uh h I'm not getting anywhere in this little area am a helping hand an aid maybe you offer someone Aid a helping hand be Twix amid if you sort of Twix you know the sheets for instance you're amid them I guess you're kind of among them choice for a Twist lime you could have a lime or lemon or lime twist you know sort of bit of of of zest or lemon or lime peel garnishing a cocktail a drink hog andoss shelfmate so hog andos is an ice cream brand so edes is also an ice cream brand so those are probably shelf mates in the grocery store core exercise done lying down oh leg lift that's what it is there we go and then ball that just grazes the bat perhaps is a foul tip I suppose okay so that must be a baseball term sounds plausible so what about this one Tutt Tutt oh The Mummy Returns that's very funny so that's uh referring to King Tut or King Tuten common who the uh you know the the sort of boy King Egyptian pharaoh whose tomb was uh discovered I guess about 100 years ago um and uh and there we go Tut Tut The Mummy Returns and that's of course the name of a film so here we have Park worker Oh Ranger right that's that's good because we had valet earlier as a different kind of Park worker a puntier park worker and then here we have it as a ranger and I even used the word Ranger as an example of what the other one wasn't so that's nice that we got that filled in don't remember where Valley was but anyway uh what else do we have entab Basin people uh the Utes I'm guessing this is also in kind of the general area of Utah in the United States and these are probably atomically related at least I would think so um so I think that's probably right the UTS the Ute people and then renan out of juice is died pet scan alternative so pet scan is a way is a is a you know medical diagnostic tool and so an MRI is also one of those ways to scan you Buccaneers buddies are hearties so me hearty is you know pirate sort of piratey language your mates and then hurt uh to hurt is to ache word often followed by Roman numeral oh act so in a play for instance you could have act 1 2 3 4 5 and those are usually listed with Roman numerals not always but but usually as it does say often so if a baby's nighttime routine I guess is a bath there we go and then built so okay if an idea is built on something it's based on that idea so that will be the answer and there we go uh as always it's a Sunday puzzle so it does take quite a long time uh but there we go um usually takes about 40 minutes let's look at our theme we had some doubled words that resulted in uh that became punny uh sort of punny ways to clue common English language phrases so tisk tisk became double click buddy buddy became second mate knock knock became rap do I think that's very clever uh 11 became one after another I think that one's that one's very good as well poo poo is this Bear's repeating that one I like also actually those three I think may be my favorites ow ow is all 's was surprised by that one that that were repeating the ow um okay okay is backup copy and this this one went over my head I'm sure it's very straightforward but I just for some reason I'm not quite getting it okay okay backup copy okay backup back up is it sort of someone saying okay you're in a truck and someone's saying okay it's fine to back up I don't know anyway uh that's the answer hubba hubba is pair of pants it's pretty good and um I think I don't think there were any in the Downs no there weren't so that that is it that wraps up the theme is there an echo in here was the Sunday Crossroad I think very very um classic Sunday in terms of level of difficulty and sort of um thoroughness but also fairly elegant theme uh thorough but you know not not overly complex theme so there we go that was the Sunday crossroad by John koulman hope you enjoyed it I'll be back tomorrow with the much quicker smaller Monday puzzle join me for that but until then please do have an excellent remainer of your Sunday take care [Music]
