entitled is there an echo in here um we'll find out what that means momentarily it's by John koulman who's constructed around half a dozen puzzles for the New York Times it was edited once again by Joel felano and let's start solving we'll see what this is all about maybe something about duplicated letters or words or something like that loses one's shirt say um I mean this is usually meant to refer to a financial loss but but I I don't have a guess as to what it is swept style hair style swept style I A Part as in your hair is parted or a swept style it's sort of swept up um chemical formula for lie I don't know actually what the chemical formula for Li is oil container oil drum probably um let's see if that works with this resistance unit yes I think ohms are units of resistance so does that help with this swept style okay yeah so it could be swept it could be an updo um your hair is up sort of swept up so does that help with this loose loses one's shirt say oh no it okay it isn't defin a lot no it's very straightforward it just undresses I think probably with that U and that D so okay so you're actually quite literally getting rid of your shirt so the chemical formula oh is it NaOH I mean I recognize that as a chemical form formula for something fairly common let's see if that works um sodium oxygen hydrogen I guess uh city with a cowboy hat wearing replica of the Eiffel Tower is it is it Paris Texas um there is a Paris Texas which I like many people I know about because of the Vim vendor film um but maybe they have they probably have this cowboy hat wearing that the clue has a repeated word I don't know the answer though night school so oh no it isn't it isn't this it's double something because night school subject would be ESL or English as a second language and then here we have basil of St an to Detroit um historic Michigan Landmark um so St is the abbreviation is the feminine abbreviation for Saint in French all right three may keep a blank if two of them are dead three may keep a secret if two of them are dead Benjamin Franklin very good yeah that is accurate all right over the counter brand that promises guaranteed relief every time oh is it xlax the laxative could be so then what would this be oh double click right okay because this is a representation of clicking your tongue which I think I kind of did that sort of disapproving uh tongue click okay so yeah that's actually pretty straightforward so I wonder we'll probably have different ways of saying double we probably won't say double in all of these answers but we'll refer to the fact that there are have a punny reference to a doubled clue we'll find out if that's what's happening but I think it probably is put forth if you put something forth you set it half a rhyming genre name SCI for sci-fi science fiction and Alaskan salmon Hunters kodiaks that's a that's a bear bears sort of famously catch salmon and eat it so um I think that's probably right what 104 and over are used in they're used in radio lingo probably kind of language used in radio communication flaky oh maybe maybe this is wrong because flaky mineral I would think would be something like Micah in four letters so maybe not that what about this Mirror Image question mark self as in you look in a mirror and you see yourself I'm not sure but let's try it exploit a deed so exploit could be a verb obviously but exploit is um pronounced that way is a noun so something you've accomplished your deed your exploits Feats so let's see if that works hold wheat what is after you've H wheat what are you left with h I'm not sure what the answer to this is probably should be but I'm not uh steaming with off if you're teed off maybe you're angry you're steaming does that help with what ton for and over are used in radio I don't know I'm not confident about self actually paper saving invoice Oh e file no e Bill yes okay I've never heard the phrase e bill this is an ew that I'm I'm slightly skeptical of I've never said heard someone say send me an e bill or I got the E you just say the bill you you say email it to me or something um but anyway guess the idea is you get an invoice rically rather one just because it would fit oops let's see if it does big name and allergy medication oh I have no idea never really had to deal with allergies fortunately uh not sure thuing noise can imagine this ending with an an oh benad dril maybe is that for that seems like it might be is it with iron well I think it might be a y there so what would the reason I got to that is because I was thinking a th noise might just end in onk just sounds like it kind of would be that sort of noise but what is it is it a thonk maybe I don't know basic no it isn't because a basic skateboarding trick would be an OE there we go it's a a simple skate well I say simple I couldn't do one uh but I think relative to many skateboarding tricks it's one of the more basic ones so thuing noise plonk probably you plon it down th it down kind of salad with hard-boiled eggs um not sure off hand this is looks like Senator or representative AG uh so these are legislators in the United States Congress so um politicians or politicos P probably politicians in this case um that's probably what P would be an abbreviation of I mean and because Senator and representative are both abbreviated the answer is inferred to be as well so does that work with this kind of salad with hard-boiled eggs this is probably obvious but I can't think what it is what cognitive behavioral therapy can treat in brief that is one of the ways vital spark in you and then first tier is a celeb would be an A-list celebrity there we go oh this doesn't look right though does it plugs ADL oh a list I misspelled it sorry plugs or ads as an advertisement so if you plug something you sort of advertise it or promote it okay so I think we've looked at all the rest of everything in here yeah all right built on if something is if you've built baseball diamond so umps as in umpires are these sort of authorities in a baseball game and so talks incessantly is yaps all right up to if you're up to something you're as uh or it could be up to as in as in I'm up to it I'm able to do it or it could be up to as in I'm interested I'm game or it could be up to as in that's what I'm doing that's what I'm up to right now it's what I'm in the process of doing I'm not sure which it is Jovian Moon uh Europa um that's a moon of Jupiter um so there we go Jo you know uh Joan referring to to of you know of Jupiter um big step for a startup for short an IPO I suppose at which point I guess it's no longer a startup it's a publicly traded company because it's gone through an initial public offering and it is listed on public stock markets um it Bears ranger and I even used the word Ranger as an example of what the other one wasn't so that's nice that we got that filled in don't remember where Valley was but anyway uh what else do we have entab Basin people uh the Utes I'm guessing this is also in kind of the general area of Utah in the United States and these are probably atomically related at least I would think so um so I think that's probably right the UTS the Ute people and then renan out of juice is died pet scan alternative so pet scan is a way is a is a you know medical diagnostic tool and so an MRI is also one of those ways to scan you Buccaneers buddies are hearties so me hearty is you know pirate sort of piratey language your mates and then hurt uh to hurt is to ache word often followed by Roman numeral oh act so in a but there we go um usually takes about 40 minutes let's look at our theme we had some doubled words that resulted in uh that became punny uh sort of punny ways to clue common English language phrases so tisk tisk became double click buddy buddy became second mate knock knock became rap do I think that's very clever uh 11 became one after another I think that one's that one's very good as well poo poo is this Bear's repeating that one I like also actually those three I think may be my favorites ow ow is all 's was surprised by that one that that were repeating the ow um okay okay is backup copy and this this one went over my head I'm sure it's very straightforward but I just for some reason I'm not quite getting it okay okay backup copy okay backup back up is it sort of someone saying okay you're in a truck and someone's saying okay it's fine to back up I don't know anyway uh that's the answer hubba hubba is pair of pants it's pretty good and um I think I don't think there were any in the Downs no there weren't so that that is it that wraps up the theme is there an echo in here was the Sunday Crossroad I think very very um classic Sunday in terms of level of difficulty and sort of um thoroughness but also fairly elegant theme uh thorough but you know not not overly complex theme so there we go that was the Sunday crossroad by John koulman hope you enjoyed it I'll be back
