STEPS ASIDE AND RESIGNS FROM THE DEPARTMENT THAT HE SERVED MORE THAN THREE DECADES WITH, AIMING TO KEEP NEW YORKERS SAFE. HE SERVED AS THE TOP COP FOR THE PAST 14 MONTHS FOLLOWING HIS APPOINTMENT BACK IN JULY OF LAST YEAR. HE MADE HISTORY AS THE FIRST HISPANIC TO BE MADE TO MAKE IT TO THE POST. A CRACKDOWN ON CRIME AND TACKLE THE CITY'S SAFETY ISSUES. WHILE IT TOOK HIM 30 YEARS TO REACH THE 14TH FLOOR OF ONE POLICE PLAZA, HIS CAREER WITH THE DEPARTMENT COMES TO AN END AS THE FEDERAL PROBE LOOKS INTO POSSIBLE CORRUPTION BY PEOPLE CLOSE TO HIM, INCLUDING HIS BROTHER.
