nod as this team starting quarterback a final ramp up perhaps in the leadup to the 2024 season as the ners kick the 2024 campaign off with the New York Jets in prime time on Monday Night Football the good news is that New Orleans Saints coming to Northern California also expected to play their starters so at least for a couple of drives the first quarter the first quarter and change this will feel and look like an actual football game the ners not favorites nor are the Saints this game a pick them I think that goes a long way in saying that the oddsmakers expecting both teams to play their starters and they're looking at this as somewhat of an even matchup throughout the 60-minute ball game the over under a little bit higher compared to some of these preseason lines that we've seen 38 and a half we know that Kyle Shanahan Brock pry do such a great job of executing and putting together that script on opening drives and if the ners go right down the field and they score a touchdown they get three KY Shanahan might pull the starters if that's all that he has to see if the ners go three and out against a very good New Orleans Saints defense which is very sound at all three levels maybe the starters come back so it's going to be a little bit of a feel it out process for both New Orleans and San Francisco tonight and as you can see right down below me about 52 minutes left until on Brandon iuk chip queing us up Jeremy Fowler saying yesterday on ESPN that there is a 6040 chance that auk returns to the ners as compared to him being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers two teams really in the mix right now it's Pittsburgh and San Francisco additional reporting the ners are offering iuk up to $30 million per year which would signify they have really increased their offer which back a couple of months ago was at about $26 million the ners waited the wide receiver Market blew up and in turn auk's asking price was on the uptick and another update that I want to pass along and just some thoughts that I have about this situation and I talked about this on my ex page on Instagram I own real estate inside Steeler fans heads and I talked about it with Larry Krueger on the Krug show this morning on YouTube I was on with him for about an hour and 10 minutes talking some Niners and the Pittsburgh Steelers played football last night they looked horrendous and why would Brandon iuk want to go to a Pittsburgh team that has uncertainty at the quarterback position for the last three years I have seen Russell Wilson decline precipitously last night he didn't look any better for whatever reason he has become so conservative over the last couple of years when in Seattle he had one of the best deep balls in the NFL and he's lost some of that escapability and athleticism and as he's gotten older the accuracy and arm strength just truly have gone down I didn't see anything special or encouraging from Russell Wilson Justin Fields struggles to complete more than 60% of his passes and there is a sample size that we've seen with him as well that he is not a consistent starting quarterback in this league he might run 44 he might have a very strong arm he might make some plays out of structure that make you say wow but he can't play on time or at Le struggles to do so has no touch and limited accuracy across the middle area of the field and we saw him Miss deep balls last night when his receivers were NFL open so that's the uncertainty around the quarterback position with the Pittsburgh Steelers and would auk be wise to leave Kyle Shanahan Brock pie Christian mcaffrey George KD Debo Samuel Jawan Jennings Trent Williams this Niners defense a Super Bowl window for the Pittsburgh Steelers bad quarterback play they have not won a playoff game since 2016 I have respect for Mike Tomlin I'd love to play for him frankly but he hasn't won a playoff game since 2016 that's a red flag has hasn't been able to get offensive coordinator right and George Pickins the immaturity has been on display for him to start his NFL career would he be happy with giving up targets to Brandon iuk and at some point you have to look at that division the AFC North is loaded Pittsburgh is due for a regression at some point they've never gone under 500 under Mike Tom it's incredible how consistent they've been but when is that streak going to come to an end so it's one to get paid a lot and to be wanted Brandon auk I understand but quality of life is very important winning makes you happy being a Super Bowl Contender makes coming to work every day very fun playing on a loaded offense leads to easy looks easy completions easy catches and a lot of production and you can continue with one of the more Marquee brands in all those Sports to grow your personal brand with the Francisco 49ers so as a football situation San Francisco is so much of a better destination as compared to Pittsburgh and last night we saw that that Steelers offense looked concerningly bad and I know it's the NFL preseason but again I've watched Russell Wilson the last three years I've watched Justin Fields the last two years I've watched Steeler offenses since 2016 they have not been are all real ones top story lines tonight Kyle Shanahan confirming this week that some of the Niner starters will get some live game on both sides of the ball I am an advocate for this type of movement I am a fan of this decision I don't think that you can replicate live game reps and in a sport that is so complex in a sport that requires all 11 players on the field to do their job simultaneously with good flow and good movement and good execution and strategy you can practice it as much as you want you got to get in between the lines for an action ual game to see how you stack up what you need to improve on where things are so I'm glad that the starters are playing tonight ideally of course no injuries do happen look at what Andy Reid does with the Kansas City Chiefs he traditionally has always run a long in physical training camp he has played his starters in each of these two preseason games and his Kansas City Chiefs are going for three straight Lombardi trophies what he's doing has worked now for two and a half Decades of course anytime you get on the football field there is risk of injury but Andy Reid knows how important it is to get all of his players on both sides of the ball in tune finely tuned and what does it also do mentally in addition to physically it gets you mentally and physically fit for the rigors of an NFL season for when games count in December January February so I like his approach I'm glad Kyle Shanahan is taking this approach as well storyline number two can the young players keep ascending we really saw a lot of flashes from this draft class week one against Tennessee in the preseason in addition to some of these young players Dominic puny third round pick out of Right Guard look out for number 77 tonight he has performed very well if he continues to do that he will not relinquish That Right Guard role no pressures no sacks given up last week against Tennessee PFF did greet him low in the Run game I completely disagree because I saw him with movement on pool blocks helping to seal the Jordan Mason opening drive touchdown I saw him pancaking the Titans number one defensive lineman and I saw flashes of him being able to start for this team right away he brings a youthful energy a youthful spark physicality and eyes and athleticism to this Niners offensive line which badly needs it Malik Mustafa the fourth down stop deepest player on the field last week against Tennessee identifies the run is able to make a quick decision very decisively to shoot toward Hassan H Haskins stuff him right before the goal line and come through with a massive bone crunching hit in a critical situation the diagnosing of that play and the execution of it finished off with the huge Boomstick hit you see flashes there D winners all of the speed athleticism and instincts to be a really good linebacker in this league sometimes he has to tone down his aggressiveness because what makes him great is how quickly he makes decisions see ball get ball make disruptive plays it seems as though he's always in the back field he's always laying a big hit but because he's so aggressive mentally sometimes he can overp pursue and take himself out of plays Jer Brown Renardo green other young players who I'm looking forward to watching Jordan Mason can he continue to ascend can Cody shrer get some good reps in here tonight Jacob coing we might see him in a ner uniform for the first time Ricky peaw probably not but that would be ideal can these young players keep ascending because on a team that is paying top dollar to so many players you need to be able to have young players to replenish that Talent who are cost controlled assets under team control and that's why the draft is so pivotal and if the Niners are hitting on these players and they get early returns it just helps them be a consistent winner the backup quarterback battle going to be a good one right now it's Brandon Allen's job to lose to be qb2 behind Brock pry I thought he played very well against Tennessee drove the ball down field was accurate make quick made quick decisions and then Josh dos is this team's number three who's a really good athlete solid arm strength he more so thrives out of structure making athletic plays with his arm and legs Brandon Allen more of that ontime rhythmic passer but with how they played last week against Tennessee it eased some of my concerns about the Niners backup quarterback role it really is a testament to Kyle Shanahan's quarterback friendly system which maximizes the quarterback position Niner special teams last week were a joke on the new kickoff return on punt returns they gave up Splash plays which flipped the field Brian Schneider I'm not going to go as far as to say your job is on the line but your unit better play better tonight and then with any preseason game position battles and depth Niners are a little bit light as far as depth goes at defensive tackle at Edge rusher at safety at running back because of injury injuries at tight end so those are good depth positions to watch and then some of the position battles that we're seeing more so backups but secondary linebacker safety Right Guard Center rb2 wide receiver 456 all position groups that we will be watching tonight in addition to position battles Marcus Mason a $2 Super Chat ba stands for breaking ankles and beating asses yo he's one of the best route runners in the entire NFL you got that right and [Applause] oh Antonio Heria coming in with a $50 Super Chat and uh say it all together San franisco do you believe Bosa will be a defensive player of the year candidate this you're knowing the 49er secondary has been better in recent years look I think he bounces back and he's more so close to that 20202 dpoy form as compared to last year when the sack numbers went down from 18 a half to 1010 and a half and while his quarterback pressures and quarterback hit numbers were identical from 2023 to 2022 in some categories even better last year that sack number decreasing really showed me that Nick Bosa was a tad off from the dominant player we've been accustomed to seeing and I think a big reason for that he did not sign his contract extension until the Wednesday of the season opener so he didn't have time to ramp up to get in any preseason games to take part in these physical hard tough arduous training camp practices and because of that I don't think that he was in great game shape we saw him come on at the end of the year and he was fresh for the first time the playoffs over the last couple of years he ended his playoff sack drought but I think this year with BOS being in great shape don't have to worry about the contract which can be a mental and physical hindrance I think Nick Bosa once again has a very dominant year and continues to solidify himself as a top five top 10 Edge rusher in this game do you agree with the decision to play the starters because most of the starters will play tonight against New Orleans the Saints doing this same a for agree D for disagree chip do you agree with the decision for teams across the NFL in general to give their starter some run in the NFL preseason absolutely I am a big proponent of getting your starter some run in the preseason especially for the ners because a lot of coaches sometimes will justify not playing their starters because they think that they got good work in during joint practices well the ners didn't get that luxury they had to cancel joint practice so they didn't get as many reps live reps against a different team as you'd hope so I'm always a big fan of getting a started with some run I think going in cold just not ideal for me personally I understand you know wanting to keep guys healthy and whatnot but look injuries can happen at any moment especially during the regular season too so I like the idea of getting your guys out there getting some reps and you know getting them hitting a little bit CU you don't really hit in practice as well that's obviously you know a big key once the season starts as well so I'm a big fan I agree with playing your starters what I'm seeing in the comment section can dowlin agree Madden King disagree zatan agree Shelly Gentry typ in that a John with an A lisotto A John Wallace I like what he said we've got to get some hits and give some hits Mond sta he agrees with Chipen myself mostly people saying they agree and I don't just think it's because of the entertainment Factor like with what chip and I do sometimes it can be boring to do preseason games when you are watching some bad quarterback play and you're watching players who are UFL guys who will never sniff NFL rosters it's obviously more entertaining when you can see the starters play because then you start to form form your opinions and you form some analysis as to what that team could become what they're projected to be but the physical and mental nature of getting those reps getting the timing down the physicality the speed all of those aspects of the NFL preseason very important and as we look ahead the NFL is thinking about adding an 18th game in that instance there would only be two preseason games which is fine still because I think in one of those two preseason games you'll have some players be able to put some plays on tape for their current and future hopes of being on an NFL roster you can determine some roster battles and then for a quarter or two in one of those games you have your Starters play for instance the Chicago Bears yesterday they played Caleb Williams for a half they got an extended look at what he can do and now the hype around the Bears is tremendous how about Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and the Chiefs Ones playing an extended game yesterday in the preseason and Andy Reid is able to read and assess and analyze and get some thoughts together for what his football team is going to look like and feel like during the 2024 campaign because every year every roster is different and you can practice these things ad na you got to be able to evaluate ingame situations and ingame instances so that's our about the last three years when the Niners in 2021 started off three and five and then in 2022 there were spectacular team and you think about what happened last year and some big moments toward the end of the year and during that run to the Super Bowl how many clutch plays how many contested catches how many momentum swinging plays has Jawan Jennings Made third and Jawan is real money down Jaan is real because he's come through on some fourth Downs as well he has a knack for rising up to the occasion in the biggest moments of the game the guts of the game when the pressure cooker is on time and time again now a big reason why some casuals aren't always too familiar with jaan's game is because he had 19 catches last year 35 the year before and 24 before that it's not like he has been an off targeted wide receiver but he certainly moves the needle as far as big time plays because the Niners aren't where they are they don't win some of the big games that they do they don't convert on the San Francisco 49ers report Chase senior here with you the second preseason game for San Francisco in the rear view the Niners beating the New Orleans Saints by a final tally of 1610 and coming up my instant reaction just taking a look and reacting to everything that transpired in this game and I want to start off on the offensive side of the football some headlines were made when Kyle Shanahan said earlier this week that some of the starters were going to play for San Francisco including quarterback Brock pie and Pie did get the start with this starting ners offensive line I put that in the air quotations because Aaron Banks had pinky surgery so Nick seel got the start at left guard he got bullied on a couple of occasions by Brian brei a very good second-year defensive tackle out of Clemson not a good look for him zakel last week played pretty well at Center but did not look good at left guard and then of course San Francisco continues to be without Trent Williams I don't think the offensive line did pry any favors on the first drive for San Francisco and py got three drives they stalled py was able to hit Bren Willis and that drive kind of came to a halt after Brian brei had this interior pass rush and muddied up the pocket after bulldozing Nick SEL and two drives in we really saw nothing from pie the offensive line protection not great he wasn't on the same page and it's important to note that while the ners had their starting offensive line out there py was playing with a bunch of no buies a bunch of number twos and a bunch of number threes and you could see that with the lack of communication pry would throw it in one area and the receiver wouldn't be there pie would want somebody to come back to the football on a scrambled and that receiver didn't do it so no Debo Samuel no Christian mcaffrey no George KD Jawan Jennings Kyle yek Brandon auk Trent Williams Aaron Banks and we saw this ners first string offense not really look good on the third drive breida ran pretty well Dominic puny once again played good football putting some good plays on tape I think he was going to be your week one starter against the New York Jets there was a play on a Josh dobs throw to Trent Taylor which was deflected and then dropped by Taylor which led to a field goal where Dominic puny blocked his man initially and then there was an edge rusher coming around and puny just spun and was able to lay a block on him that's just great awareness from a rookie and I've said this I think that puny gives this team some juice some physicality some athleticism and better play along the offensive line so I don't necessarily always look at wins and losses in the preseason these games don't count I look for individual performances I look for individual growth and drops last couple of weeks had a very tight position Danny gray nearly had a drop on one of his receptions his seat is hot so some developments and some takeaways there defensive notes you had some young players making some really good plays to start and the Niners did not have a lot of starters defensively start this game for San Francisco against the Saints ones who got extended looks but you did have Jer Brown from this hybrid linebacker position make a really good tfl on a running play Renardo green with a nice pass breakup on a ball that was thrown slightly Inside by Derek Carr Renardo green the second round pick out of Florida state did get beat later on a Crosser by Chris olve but had decent positioning on press man coverage from that beginning of the play Chris alve a really good player in this league so it's good to see Renardo green matched up against a player of that caliber I'll say this and we talked about the linebacker spot for San Francisco they're very deep at the linebacker position and they're going to have to make some difficult Cuts there I think that's a big reason why they let go of Ezekiel Turner this past week Curtis Robinson continues to make really good plays and put really good plays on tape this is with d winers playing well Jaylen Graham had a good night tonight making disruptive plays you have Demetrius Flanigan fouls I thought that dandre Campbell played with some good juice I think he's going to hold off D winners and Jaylen Graham and he's going to start at off ball linebacker for the ners to begin the year some concerns I have with this defensive unit I know it's the preseason but the Niners third down defense has not been good during the preseason haven't been great against the run and this is after San Francisco is 24th in third down efficiency as a defense last year so just th something to keep in mind as you look ahead to the regular season week one against the Jets can they get off the field and can they stop the run last year they certainly struggled in those areas the Niner starting defense tonight Robert Beal Jordan Elliott Kevin given yurr Matos dandre camel Demetrius Flanigan FS Curtis Robinson so an interesting starting linebacking core not the winners and Jaylen Graham in the secondary Renardo green Rocky as outside corners and then Jer Brown George Odum as your safeties I think week one it could be Jer Brown George odm as your starting safeties one of the highlights for this defense tonight Edge Rush Alex Barrett with a strip sack fumble recovery on Spencer Rattler I felt as though that kind of got the juices flowing for this ners offense seventh round pick linebacker at of Florida State Tatum Bethune making some plays all around the field he's a very active player again adding depth to the linebacker room Malik Mustafa after a really good preseason debut last week I thought he took some bad angles and missed some tackles in this game against new Orleans and then lastly special teams Presley Harvin filling in for Mitch wisnowski had four punts inside the 20 three of them finally placed inside the 10 Mitch wishnowski continues to deal with arthritis that's a little bit of a concern if he can't go week one Presley Harvin who I thought out punted the coverage last week bounced back and had a good performance here tonight if he can't make the ners team because won't if Mitch wisnowski is healthy putting out an audition tape for other teams across the NFL Cody shider didn't do a lot once again running the football as a running back I think he has a little bit of Pop as a kick returner and then Jake Moody cover your eyes an awful Miss from 50 as that ball was on its way to Oakland it was a bad Miss he did redeem himself later with the kick from about 32 yards or so but Jake Moody from 50 plus wide wide right so my instant reaction after the second preseason game for the ners 1610 winners going to be a late game Friday week three of the preseason against the
