Intro tonight unrest in the UK far-right activists clash with police as protests turn violent dozens arrested in demonstrations involving anti-immigration groups I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we've seen this weekend the worst disorder the country has seen in years people in Paris jump on the Olympic bandwagon there was quite a bit of complaining but I feel like everyone's really enjoying it as Canada lands a fifth gold medal in a historic finish Urban agriculture disappointment over a display appearing to be just Food For Thoughts plus wildfires and brain health these particles do seem to get into the brain unfortunately connecting smoke exposure to an increased risk of a dementia diagnosis [Music] CTV national news with Heather butts good evening we begin tonight with the eruption of far-right violence sweeping across the UK anti-immigration rallies hit multiple cities officials blame farri groups exploiting the horrific stabbing attack that killed three children in the north today a mob targeted a hotel that was housing Asylum Seekers Britain's new Riots erupt in UK prime minister is condemning the violence the worst riots the country has seen in more than a decade ctv's Christina Talia reports rioting in the town of rotheram a violent group some clutching UK Flags stormed a holiday in Breaking Windows setting a fire and injuring police as some shout get them out the them migrants this hotel houses Asylum Seekers nearly a week of violence has gripped parts of the UK after Monday's murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift themed event in Northwest England the death set off a wave of anti-immigrant and far-right rhetoric after rumors the alleged attacker was a Muslim Foreigner who arrived in the UK by boat except the accused is not an immigrant he's UK born a 17-year-old living in Wales forget the facts this expert in far-right extremism says the truth about the alleged Killer's birthplace doesn't matter they're not interested in the facts is a perfect opportunity for them to uh get people angry get people listening to their message the images of three white girls and the accused a person of color also ignite the far right they are engaged in a process of othering they see what they term as Western values or white values under attack I won't shy away from calling it what it is far right thuggery UK prime minister Kier starmer wrapping up his first month in office vowed to unravel the unrest I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder while calling out the racist rhetoric other minority Community singled out Nazi salutes in the street Naz counter protests attempt to ease tensions and restore the peace refugees are welcome as concerns linger that the ongoing violence will continue to propel radical protesters will this this event be fodder for um uh future farri narrative probably the families of the murder victim say too many are using the tragedy to create Division and hate while police say there have been at least 150 arrests since Saturday with more to come Heather Christina thank you Firefighter killed in Alberta wildfire heartbreak in Jasper after a firefighter was killed while battling the outof control wildfires well we know firefighting comes with tremendous risk a loss like this is unexpected and extremely difficult the 24-year-old from Calgary was struck Yesterday by a falling tree Alberta Wildfire posted this picture saying today we are mourning the loss of one of our own this morning we stood heartbroken with our partners as a procession passed by the prime minister's statement read he served albertans with unwavering bravery meanwhile bus tours for Jasper evacuees have been postponed until at least tomorrow out of respect for his family and crew tropical storm Debbie is likely to become a category 1 hurricane overnight it's anticipated to make landfall over Florida's Big Ben region tomorrow morning officials warned Debbie could bring catastrophic flooding and intense rain several Counties have issued voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders more than 1,600 flights have been cancelled there are Stark Travel Travel warnings for Middle East warnings tonight for the Middle East Canada has again upgraded its advisory for Israel to the highest risk level the IDF says it's on high alert as the US sends more Military Support to the region over fears of a wider war with Iran ctv's Jeremy Chiron has the latest rocket fight from Lebanon intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome today but it's the fear of Greater escalation that is prompting new travel advisories for the region this is as fraught and as perilous a moment with respect to a regional uh escalation as we've seen since uh the October uh 7 Hamas Terror attacks Global Affairs has upgraded its advisory for Israel to the highest risk level warning Canadians to be ready for an evacuation if needed in Le on the US the UK and France warning its citizens to leave the country as soon as possible a call Canada issued days ago we can't rely on uh both land and air travel to be available in the next coming weeks both Hezbollah and Tran have vowed Vengeance against Israel for the killings of prominent leaders from their militant groups Israel is in a multi-front war against Iran's axis of Evil prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu told War cabinet today saying they're prepared for any scenario and will respond to any attacks with an exact and heavy price when the supreme leader says he's going to avenge we have to take that seriously now I don't know what they're going to do or when they're going to do it but we got to make darn sure that we're ready the US has deployed military defense capabilities to the region in anticipation of Iran's attack which is believ to already be in the works they want to impact uh probably National infrastructure or a military Target and do significant damage while in Gaza strikes killed dozens of Palestinians today the death toll in The Enclave has now climbed to more than 39,000 according to Palestinian Health officials in a statement today foreign affairs minister Melanie joli pushed for deescalation and urged all sides to refrain from retaliatory violence reiterating calls for a ceasefire and the release of hostages Heather Jeremy thank you eight Palestinian athletes are Palestinian athletes in Paris competing in Paris the largest showing in Olympic history we've received so much love and support and we've used that to fuel our inner fire for competition and everything else so we're grateful for that Palestinian American Valerie tazzi is a swimmer the 24-year-old says Palestinian Olympians all know people including teammates killed in the ongoing conflict in Gaza Palestinians are competing in six events including swimming running and boxing Canadian Canada wins 2 more medals athletes continue to Showcase their competitive strength pulling off Unforgettable moments at the Paris games two more medals today including a gold in the men's hammer throw ctv's com amaly joins us now and KL there was much success but also some missed opportunities Heather let's start off with the good Canada notched its fifth gold medal of these games by having one of her own mck history n ob's Ethan catsburg becomes the youngest Gold Medal winner in the history of the men's hammer throw event at only 22 years old the winning toss flew over 84 M enough to land him first place it's been more than a hundred years since Canada's last medal in hammer throw the best part about this is that he was first up and his first throw was the one that went the distance for the gold medal and even his second throw would have been good enough for the gold medal and in boxing Canada's Wyatt Sanford threw some big punches in a losing effort the defeat against Italy sophian Oma lands the Nova scotian a bronze medal the third place finish also ends Canada's 28-year medal drought in Olympic boxing I'm absolutely uh super happy with the way that I fought uh I left it all in the ring gave 100% okay now to the bad the women's 4X 100 meter medley final where summer McIntosh had a shot at winning her fifth Olympic medal as part of this team Race but swam short the women placed fourth missing the podium by just over half a second while the men in the same event placed fifth the team led by Josh leando and Ilia kerun the two landed a double podium in individual races yesterday but could not swim to a metal finish today while more heartbreak for Canada on the track where for the first time in his career Andre degrass will not be in the Olympic final in the men's 100 me ending up Fifth in the third semi-final heat he'll Now set his eyes on the 200 M starting tomorrow Canada's metal count now sits at 17 with five gold four silver and eight bronze Heather all right KL thank you for so many the big Paris Olympics question about the Paris games was whether the locals would jump on the Olympic bandwagon after months of concerns and complaints it seems many have been drawn in CTV je Bosman reports from Paris baret the glow of the Olympic flame it seems has melted through Parisian facade of indifference the atmosphere is amazing we weren't expecting it says Mar but this is cool chic parisians are Dawning the triola the French flag dancers from the famed M rou joined into the carnival Spirit of the game it's amazing it's uh it's like I just said like it's a Once in A- lifetime experience it wasn't always a given that the Olympic Spirit would take hold in the city of cour there was quite a bit of complaining about the disruption to the city but I feel like everyone's really enjoying it well those who stayed many did hang up the F closed sign and left the city a lot of my friends uh left but I think some of them were trying to get tickets and like were sad of missing out on the Olympics yeah former Canadian Olympic cyclist Caroline canuel is now a spectator at these games it's been crazy and I mean I've done Tokyo with like the co restrictions so like seeing like people out and come to cheer for the the athletes I think it's it's really really cool M of parisians grumbling about the games the inconvenience security fears concerns over cost overruns now seem to be drowned out by cheer it helps that France is now on a gold rush led by newly minted Superstar Leon Mar in the pool as French people are complainers he says many parisians didn't want the Olympics now they've realized the atmosphere is the best there's ever been at any Olympic game not all parisians the launch of the game Saw tourism boom in the last week of July a 20% increase compared to last year but some owners say the early summer was slow and that sports fans crowding venues aren't veering far off the Olympic path at CoCo Bell French macaroon shop they're savoring the Olympic Spotlight on Paris but they say the boom they hoped for is at least for now a bit of a bust in sales still the Olympics seem to have turned parisians into tourists in their own city peris is very different like usually it's wonderful it's it's um amazing it's amazing the mayor of Paris has already said she wants The Cauldron to remain as part of the new landscape here in Paris as well as the Olympic ring on the Eiffel Tower Heather a lasting Olympic display Jean VV thanks there is an unusual site just steps away Urban Gardens from the parliament buildings in Ottawa rows of corn beans and squash the garden patch is meant to promote Urban Agriculture and improve access to food for those who need it just not this food ctv's Colton pril explains there's always room to grow in the shadow of Parliament this agrarian display by the national capital commission is part of the crown corporation's goal to support a more sustainable and available food system it means growing crops in unexpected places but this food isn't for eating if you're going to show that you can grow food sustainably in a city you need to make it accessible in all the way up to consumption right in a statement to the Canadian press the NCC says the food could be unfit for consumption due to potential so contamination and concerns over the water used for irrigation Urban agriculture has exploded in popularity over the past decade it's also become a vital source of support for nonprofits at a time when food costs are exorbitant it's quite an overwhelming uh uh responsibility and it's not getting better uh we meet regularly with our board and we wonder how we're going to carry on at this pace the Ottawa Mission serves over 4,000 meals a day the need is now so great they rely on roving food trucks to offer free support across the city according to food banks Canada one in four Canadians experience food insecurity while food banks across the country have seen visits jump 50% since 2021 it's why experts say Gardens like these need to do more than offer an idea the intent is good the impact really needs to be well-rounded um where people have access um to this food CTV News reached out to the national capital commission about these enclosures and whether future Urban Gardens would provide food to those who need it the federal agency declined an interview and didn't provide comment before deadline Colton pril CTV News Ottawa coming up could breathing in Wildfire smoke cause harm to your brain particles do you seem to get into the brain unfortunately the link between dangerous fires and dementia [Music] Anxiety and dementia when a wildfire rips through your community your life and your home are likely top of mind but what about your brain health researchers are shedding new light on how smoke exposure and chronic anxiety could both contribute to a dementia diagnosis ctv's Andrew Johnson has the story if you suffer from anxi y a new study suggests you could face a much higher risk of dementia anxiety and other stressors can actually impact your brain's Health by increasing levels of stress hormones increasing levels of inflammation over the long term can injure brain cells the study published in the Journal of the American geriatric Society has found a link between anxiety and developing dementia years later chronic or new onset anxiety nearly tripled the risk of a dementia diagnosis however anxiety that was resolved with within the first 5 years people were studied was unassociated with a greater risk people who had resolved anxiety seemed to have a similar risk compared to people who never had anxiety meaning that there may be some benefit to really treating anxiety early in terms of its impact on risk of developing dementia anxiety isn't the only dementia link being uncovered in new research findings presented this week during the peak of wildfire season suggests smoke from the fires could be worse for brain Health than other types of air pollution so these particles are very small as you suggested and they're smaller than the human here in fact about 130th you can't see them you can see them in this picture because there are millions of them the study found exposure to Wildfire smoke increased the risk of a dementia diagnosis significantly more than exposure to car exhaust particles do seem to get into the brain unfortunately so um that research is um is concerning when it com to keeping Wildfire smoke out of your home and your lungs experts recommend using an air purifier air conditioner or the fan setting on your furnace with a MV 13 rated filter Andrew Johnson CTV News Vancouver still ahead Making a Splash in someone else's pool when the side hustle for homeowners goes sideways [Music] Side hustle risks struggling with the cost of living more Canadians are taking on a side hustle some using popular apps to rent out everything from their homes to their swimming pools but there are major risks cdv's Kathy Lee on how to protect yourself the High Cost of Living pushing more Canadians to take on side gigs stats Canada finds nearly 900,000 people are even making it their full-time job well-known online rental platforms such as Airbnb turo swimply connecting owners of homes cars and even pools to renters having different in income streams is is pretty good especially in this economy Michael Deus rents his hot tub on swimley the extra money helps and he says outweigh risks that could come with doing business on peer-to-peer Marketplace apps Deus vets his renters I also have a camera on the front to show which car they're driving or who's coming in in and out fire beware that we have to uh be extremely careful platforms such as swimly have experienced fraud a Quebec woman came home to find strangers in her pool first reaction is clearly was like what are you doing here the family of five got there through the swimly app Maurice chose believes her former tenant created an account and rented out her pool without her consent scammers lift photos and pretend that they're the owner of the home in a statement swimply says it has a robust system in place to prevent detect and respond to fraudulent activities more has to be done by the platforms and maybe even Banks to help clap down on this fraud and not just fraud hosts have experienced nightmare scenarios in February an Alberta women's home was robbed and destroyed by thieves renting through Airbnb the loss and damage more than $200,000 Deus also rents out his basement and trailer hopeful he doesn't run into any problems as for shose she's cons considering a lock to block access to her yard experts say other ways hosts can protect themselves is to make sure the company's policy indicates that it is fully responsible and liable for misuse and abuse avoid e transfers always use the platform for payments and to take before and after photos of Assets in the event proof of damage is needed Cathy Lee CTV News cgre after the break bringing out the bag pipes athletes sport their kils for one of Canada's oldest Highland [Music] Games a funfilled family Festival Montreal Highland Games brought bag pipes Kilts and musle to Montreal the traditional Highland Games reconnects competitors with their Roots as a celebration of Scotland cdv's Olivia om Ali has more many Pipers at one of the oldest Thailand games in Canada are adding a modern touch to their uniforms on this sunny summer day very sweaty it's humid but there's a free Breeze despite the heat The Show Must Go On at Montreal's Highland Games let's make some noise for big combat Ur one unique Scottish tradition is the heavy Athletics competition the invite only event features athletes from Canada the United States and Scotland I thought the throwing the weight over the head was kind of scary I was really scared of them smashing their skull but they were fine the day kicked off with the bang and was followed by a fan favorite it's really lovely especially in the opening ceremony it's always lovely to see them all play together the pipe bands just so happen to be the Highland Game's new president's favorite as well my favorite part is obviously I'm a bit biased as the pipe band competition so being a bag Piper myself uh two of the bands that I play with are here today the black watch and the Glen Gary pipe it's clear the Scots aren't shying away from competition the tug of war raises money for mental health research at the Douglas Mental Health Institute where the games are held I think it's really important to give back to the Douglas especially in today's world with issues around mental health and uh the good work that they're doing here at the hospital obviously it's helping support those people in Montreal teams go head-to-head on the rope and in fundraising the goal is to raise $5,000 organizers say this Year's tradition features more athletes and bands including one from San Francisco I love all the music that's everywhere I love all the different events that are happening um I also love the people the community and everything about it it's only a one-day event but if you missed out it happens every year on the first Sunday of August Olivia Ali CTV News Montreal and it looks like a lot of fun that's our newscast
