CTV National News | Monday, August 5, 2024: Flood preparations underway for B.C. interior

tonight flood watch the BC interior on alert as water starts spilling over the landslide blocking the chil Coten River evacuation orders and flood preparations underway I cannot underline enough how extremely unstable and dangerous the valley is right now in Alberta the Prime Minister briefed on the Wildfire fight while meeting with Jasper evacuees and fire Crews stock markets around the world Take a Tumble plunging amid fears of a slumping US economy and a recession there's so much uncertainty coming out of that economy it's radiating shock waves through Global markets the new patient portal helping families with loved ones in long-term care I don't have to chase them for information about my mother it's all there plus Olympic Glory I'm always striving for more I always want more I have so much left I want to accomplish I'm only 17 Canada's golden athletes share their highlights of the Paris games CTV national news with Omar saaden reporting tonight Heather buts good evening those keeping a close eye on the landslide in the BC interior knew it was only a matter of time before the water building up behind the Natural Dam broke through the concern is how fast and fierce it will flow now that it's spilling over the top ctv's Isabella zafari reports after days of anticipation A Rush of water we've clearly entered a new phase in our response to the choten river Landslide since Wednesday a landslide has choked the chelen river creating a lake about 11 km long behind it water is starting to run a lot more down the river Channel just before 9 Monday morning that water began to overflow past this Natural Dam prompting a severe warning from The Province I cannot underline enough how extremely unstable and dangerous the valley is right now it is extremely unsafe to be in the landslide and surrounding areas as the water began to move Downstream it gained momentum causing debris to form and Banks to become unstable creating dangerous conditions you'll notice a set a change in sediment so you'll notice a change in color within the stream uh it will be dirtier you may be standing on really unstable ground that's why we want you to stay away from the river banks it is not the place to be you can see it's breaking through a lot more more dust numerous evacuation orders have been issued including anywhere on the Fraser River and its banks from Churn Creek to little Leon Creek with uh 11 properties on order which uh We've estimated to be a population of about 10 people we need people to stay off of the choten and Fraser rivers and away from the river banks the stream is moving as the province predicted but things could change quickly these images just hours apart showing Rising water levels the risk is decreasing but understand it is clearly still there Minister Bowen ma says the province will be monitoring the river closely and adds there's no certainty yet as to when it will be safe enough for people to get back on the river Isabella zavari CTV News Vancouver people who fled the Jasper wildfires had the chance to return to the town today to see the devastation firsthand some of them meeting with the Prime Minister who was briefed on the fire situation in nearby Hinton Alberta here's CV's Miriam Valdez caretti more than a week after wildfires ravaged the town of Jasper the Prime Minister paid a visit to the wildfire Command Center in Hinton meeting with fire Crews and Premier Danielle Smith going to be a really big rebuilding challenge I wanted um him to to see that unified command works and that he should trust us as a partner to be able to assist in that the leaders were briefed on the Wildfire response in Jasper 858 people still working to get the fire in the National Park under control right now we're taking the advantage of the fact that we're going to try and get as many people on the ground as we can in places we could not get them based on fire Behavior while it isn't safe for people to return home evacuees were able to take a bus into the town on Monday for the first time to see the damage and Devastation themselves I think uh some people want the closure so seeing a physical demonstration of of your home no longer being there might help with the the healing process others aren't ready yet we'd rather um see the community privately on our own when we're able to um it's just not something it's something we've chosen not to do as the province looks towards the future of Jack asper and rebuilding the town Premier Smith says she hopes to work closely with Trudeau because I think we'll be able to get permits approved um the development support that needed and be able to do things a lot faster with all three levels of government working together Smith says Jasper doesn't have a development permitting Department like most municipalities but is working towards that so rebuilding can be done without any delays Trudeau didn't make himself available to Media or take questions his office says he won't be taking a tour of the devastation in Jasper during his visit Parks candada saying it was out of respect for the people grieving and those going to visit today Miriam Valdez caretti CTV News Hinton Alberta South of the Border catastrophic flooding and wild winds in Florida as Debbie slam the Gulf Coast as a category 1 hurricane and turn deadly there's a lot of water a lot of wind a lot of tree branches a lot of flooding this is the first hurricane to hit Florida this season making landfall in in the Big Bend region dumping more than 12 Ines of rain in some parts at least four people were killed including two children hundreds of thousands of customers in Florida are without power Debbie has since downgraded to a tropical storm it's now cutting a path towards the Carolinas bringing torrential downpours and historic flooding both Georgia and South Carolina have declared states of emergency Global markets spiral today suffering one of the worst days in years triggered by new concerns of a possible recession for the US economy a rocky day across the board the Dow Jones Lost more than a th000 points closing at 3873 the NASDAQ falling more than 576 points and the S&P 500 suffering one of its worst days in nearly two years down 160 points cdv's Colton pril takes a closer look at the numbers and what it all means Global markets tumbling for the Third day in a row investors continue the selloff over fears of a slowing US economy there's so much uncertainty coming out of that economy uh it's radiating shock waves through the through Global markets the worst hit Japan where the Nick cratered 12% at one point exceeding the Black Monday crash of 1987 wall Street's volatility measure hit its highest point since the beginning of the pandemic while tech stocks continue their weeks long decline they're all falling very dramatically right now which shows there was a bit of a bubble effect there and this is probably what's driving the the bigger downturn that we're seeing across World Markets part of today's extreme reaction a response to Japan's interest rate hike last week many investors borrowed against a lowest yen to fund higher yield Assets Now they're selling off stocks to pay back their loans suddenly when we combine that with the other factors they're saying ah maybe we better rebalance our portfolios and we're not talking about a, dollar here or there it's billions of dollars but experts say this should change little for Canadian investors this will probably be a minor blip and uh I don't anticipate this being you know people's biggest fears now attention shifts to the US Federal Reserve and a potential interest rate drop when they meet in September for Canadians the TSX was closed over the holiday economists predict a less severe drop when it opens tomorrow morning and fluctuation throughout the week as investors closely monitor their portfolios Heather Colton thank you a Landmark Financial ruling from a US federal judge designating the online search giant Google a monopoly Google lost a massive antitrust lawsuit over its search dominance a judge will now decide whether to break up parts of Google which could potentially reshape how Millions get information online Google plans to appeal the decision to the race for for the White House vice president KLA Harris is expected to announce her running mate Arizona senator and retired astronaut Mark Kelly and Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz a retired school teacher she's expected to make the announcement at tomorrow's rally in Philadelphia where the pair will kick off a of rallies in key Battleground States this week the prime minister of Bangladesh resigned and fled the country after weeks of deadly anti-government protests grip the nation thousands of protesters stormed Shake hina's official residents they want to scrap quotas for government jobs and put an end to the prime minister's 15-year rule at least 91 people were killed yesterday and hundreds more injured in clashes between police and protesters nearly 300 people have died since mid July Bangladesh's military says it will form an interim government a violent altercation over a Toronto parking ticket sent a man and two officers to hospital a large police presence shut down a Toronto Street for several hours police say the man's anger towards a parking enforcement officer went from verbal to physical a neighbor captured police converging and arresting the man who neighbors say was picking up his children from a relative's house and stopped his car in a bike lane this is another incident where our members were assaulted because people are becoming violent over a parking ticket this is not acceptable police call it an increasingly Troublesome occurrence as of mid July 27 assaults on parking enforcement officers have been reported compared to just four in the same period last year Canada has battled the best in the world at the Olympic PS relishing several golden moments but today Canadian athletes were kept off the podium cdv's Christina Talia joins us Christina passion and pride still on display though Heather Team Canada celebrated its Swimmers at Canada house today wrapping up nine days of competition the swimmers take off from Paris with eight medals matching their second highest total ever the person to my right probably does not need very much of an introduction it's been the summer of Summer Macintosh no I don't think it's sunken at all the 17-year-old from Toronto Ontario takes off from Paris with three gold medals and a silver she became the first Canadian athlete to win three golds in one Olympic Games and matched teammate penny alexc for the most medals won by a Canadian athlete at a single Summer Games her recent popularity speaks to the demands on her schedule with her time with the media capped as she had an important phone call coming up the prime minister of Canada is calling me this will be the swim star's second chat with prime minister Justin Trudeau at these games I'm excited to get back to Canada and see all my friends and family and just I can't thank all of my supporters enough it's been a crazy Whirlwind of emotions and excitement Ethan catsburg spoke to reporters today after Sunday's gold in men's hammer throw the 22-year-old from Nimo BC is Canada's first gold medal in any throwing event since 1904 in Paris this afternoon optimism and disappointment the reigning men's 200 meter champ from marcam Ontario Andre degrass qualified for the semis coming up on Wednesday and for Team Canada's women's 3x3 basketball team no spot on the podium the women missed out on a bronze medal losing to Team USA day 10 at the games wraps up with Team Canada in 11th spot with 17 medals five gold four silver and eight bronze teams China USA and Australia dominate the metal count Heather all right thanks Christina coming up connecting with loved ones in long-term care now they can have direct access and we don't do all that work a new patient portal keeping families informed last triathletes swim the sen despite health concerns [Music] the pandemic revealed a sad reality for families faced with a lack of transparency when struggling to get updates on loved ones in long-term care a new Canadian made app is working to change that providing a pathway to access information it's been adopted by the Salvation Army here's ctv's medical correspondent Avis favro few Canadians with a loved one in long-term care can do this get Round the Clock in information on their aging relatives watch as Teresa kuroi gets updates on her 90-year-old mom vitals medications blood pressure without having to locate a staff nurse I don't have to call them or I don't have to chase them for information about my mother it's all there this Salvation Army run long-term care home in Toronto is the first in Canada to adopt a new way of talking to families and opening access to medical files how do we provide that access now we make copies and we mail it to them now they can have direct access and we don't do all that work doesn't make that more sense as nurses update a resident chart the data gets shared immediately uh before we have to call and it spend a lot of time because one um family is not available it's designed by an auto husband and wife team who wondered why Canadian hospitals have moved to online patient charts but senior homes have not all the Genesis of this idea was Let's Help the staff let's cut the phone calls when the stories of pandemic came about and how there was no transparency no communication we thought let's just build a patient portal for longterm care home because it's such an easy technology to build in the 5 months it's been in use officials here say most families use it regularly the issues whether it's the TV not working right or the food not being appropriate like Frank Pickersgill whose wife Moren lived at the home he pushed for the service after seeing a demonstration I thought it's so such a simple and obvious way to get communication wherever you live or wherever you are about what's happening the managers of this Salvation Army home say the service costs about $2 per resident per month but the savings are enormous with survey showing at Cuts an estimated 3 hours a day of phone calls off the nurse's workload they get it back to actually interact with residents provide that human interaction at least 20 us nursing homes are now using this canadian-made system but Canadian homest say developers Were A Hard Sell you got to wonder right if the lack of innovation and long-term care is part and parcel because of the agism and the inability to properly fund and innovate in this sector we should have it in all the long-term care homes in fact the residents has started Fielding calls from other facilities as word gets out there's a revolution in communication starting right here AIS faos CV news Toronto a mother and her new baby are happy and healthy in Nashville after a unique delivery oh his head is coming out ma'am okay his head is out okay tell her to lay down and take off anything below her waist 911 received the call about a woman suddenly going into labor the dispatcher calmly talked them through the birth for eight minutes until a baby boy was born my favorite part about this whole situation was there was also another younger child in the room um maybe between the ages of seven and 10 years old but she started talking to the baby wel welcoming him to the world and that absolutely just melted my heart mom and baby were taken to hospital and are doing well still ahead taking the plunge in Paris despite lingering concerns over water quality in the [Music] s in Paris today the mixed relay Triathlon went ahead despite lingering concerns about the water quality in the sen the Belgian team pulled out after one of its athletes fell ill still other competitors don't go in ctv's je Bosman on what athletes and the fans had to say the Olympic Committee continued to navigate murky Waters as athletes dove into the sand today for the Mixed relay Triathlon looming behind the scenes see athletes who made it to the podium stress an uncertainty over pollution of the S yeah we were looking out the window constantly like oh it's raining again um so yeah it would be nice not to have those feelings but for me I I trust that they've made the right decision and put our health and safety the race went ahead after Belgium pulled out of the competition triathlete clar Michelle fell ill after her first swim event in the river no link has been established to the sand but Belgian reporting suggesting she suffered from an eoli infection raised red flags the ioc's mar fukat a retired Olympic champion in bathon offered Michelle wishes for a speedy recovery and said the priority is the safety of the athletes the ioc also insists lab test results show acceptable levels of bacteria locals and tourists love the sight of this iconic River in the heart of Paris still there's little enthusiasm to follow in the athletes Strokes would you swim in this water here no why no man and why for the col and and my country Sardinia is very very good very clear water beautifula beautiful more beautiful how much money could I give you to swim in it I'll do about tenna probably yeah he's just B hes he he money I don't know I'd probably want a thousand or something more than that maybe a million no i' do 50 quids 50 Quid be right I'd go I'd be i' be hop to be bartering with it you know and for a gold medal maybe oh absolutely for athletes there is a medal on the line and some say that is at the heart of the debate here it seems like they kind of we're just hoping for the best and know the athletes are going to do it because it's the Olympics it will be up to Olympic Committee Experts of course to decide whether the S is clean enough to continue to be an Olympic venue Heather Jean Viv thank you and we'll have more preparations for Paris after the break Canadian athletes suiting up for the par Olympic [Music] Games we leave you tonight with a true Testament to the power of sport hundreds of athletes will soon chase their paralympic dreams in Paris for one Elite Canadian competitor she's hoping a touching tribute to her late mother will help her get there ctv's Annie berson Oliver explains no matter the conditions Brianna Hennessy is out on the water working through pain and exhaustion this is a hard week next week we have a bit of an easier week Ready set go to realize her dream a Podium finish at the par Olympic games lots of girls grow up with the dream of being a white wedding dress for me it was going to the games and and representing K on the world stage so yeah an athlete all her life Hennessy is a newcomer to canoe kayak she only picked up the sport about years ago are you staring at the front not really you just don't look like you're hitting it square and is already a world medalist getting set for her second par Olympics I still consider myself to be the new kid on the Block didn't even know I could swim you know after my accident so it was quite scary in the start but I you know Joel and I kind of went head on into it and and we've been giving it everything we've got in 2014 Hennessy was struck by a speeding car that left her paralyzed where's your life jacket the person who helped her get through those tough days her mom Norma my mom was my best friend in the whole world um she was my Wonder Woman Norma passed away last year but thanks to her coach Joel hazan who created this special paddle for Paris this is a cardinal so in my family that's how we sort of um I guess signify our lost ones or if we see a cardinal that they're with us Norma is always by Hennessy's side in the water Bri always said you know at a World Championships or any big event that she could hear two people when she was coming down the course me and her mom so she'll still hear me and hopefully she'll feel her mom coming down the course I'm going to have her right there with me in my heart and and with every breath I take and every stroke I take down that course a touching tribute and a surprise that Hennessy hopes will give her an extra push towards the podium Annie berson Oliver CTV News Ottawa and we will be cheering her on that's our newscast for this Monday I'm Heather buts for all of us at CTV national news thank you for watching Omar and Sandy are here tomorrow I'll see you again on Friday good night [Music]
