Intro welcome back to another episode of rock boys football ranking the position groups for this Clemson program heading into 2024 and you kind of do this practice you kind of start understanding why the boys are so high on Clemson heading into 2024 specifically on the defensive side of the football you start ranking these position groups you realize not only are these really good position groups for this Clemson program they got multiple position groups that I think could be top 10 units across the entire country heading into 2024 there's a lot of Talent on this football team Davos Sweeney certainly knows it fired up to get into this list before we do an as always one would love to hear from you guys in the comment section this is a list that could go multiple different ways I have some linebacker room number one position group on this Clemson team and quite frankly one of the best position groups that you see in the country you start with Barrett Carter I mean Barrett Carter could have gone to the NFL draft would have been a relatively High pick he decides to come back for one more year what fires me up about Barrett Carter is I think he knows why he's coming back for year four there's some meat left on the bone in terms of what Barrett Carter can be as a college football linebacker backer now I don't get it twisted he's been an all ACC guy for the last couple years I think there's another step for baric Carter you're talking about at least in my mind one of the most gifted linebackers that you see in the country in the multitude of different ways that you can get Barrett Carter involved in the defense that's what stands out and this is a guy that can go sideline to sideline he can operate in space you need linebackers that can be like Barry Carter that can operate in space because there's a lot of opposing offenses that are trying to test you sideline to sideline one of if not the best linebacker in the entire country heading into 2024 now I think what makes this linebacker room intrig intriguing for me you got a few other names that I I'm fired up about I want to start with Wade woodz a guy that we've been banging in the table for throughout the offseason Davos Sweeney kind of confirmed our that he's going to be a dude for Clemson in 2024 you heard him talk about Wade woodz in the spring game Wade Wood's played a lot of safety coming out of high school he's put on a lot of good weight very similar to how we talked about Barry Carter Wade woodz gives you that same juice in terms of operating in space dropping back in coverage being a long guy that can get his hands in a lot of different throwing Windows go sideline to sideline now look at Barry Carter wde woodz Kobe McLoud say those are three really talented linebackers that you have in in this linebacker room but potentially the most talented linebacker in this room and that's saying a lot because you all know how I feel about Barry Carter you got to talk about Sammy Brown this is a guy that we kind of said when he committed to Clemson is gonna be a kid that's gonna be hard to keep off the field as a true freshman now there's some really good linebackers in this Clemson room Samy Brown's gonna play how much he plays I think kind of is more determined between what's between the years as opposed to the physical makeup of Sammy Brown from a physical trait standpoint this is a kid that is ready to play at the highest level of college football as an 18-year-old how well is he understanding the off or defense how fast is he playing kind of internally between the ears that's the question mark you make no mistake about it Samy Brown's gonna play a lot I'd even throw in Jamal Anderson going into his sophomore year he flashed there in the spring game as well I think this linebacker room is loaded with multiple NFL caliber guys now what's the best run for a good linebacker room having a good defensive line that's the number two position position group on this Clemson program you got to start with Peter Woods in the middle and going to be playing a lot of edge for Clemson in 2024 I mean a 16% pass rush win rate for a true freshman on the inside of a defensive line dummy numbers Peter Woods was one of the best defensive linemen that we saw in the country in 2023 he's only getting better going into 2024 and I think what fascinates me the most is getting some work as an edge rusher is only going to give him more opportunity to get some better matchups and get after the passer at a higher level on the other side you got TJ Parker what 22 quarterback hurries last year that could be one of the better Edge rushing groups that you see in the country I think what's Most Fascinating is we had some question marks about the depth of the edge rusher Department AJ Hoffler he looks like he could be a guy from that spring game Jem Lawson you're starting to feel good about the depth of the edge which was one of our bigger question marks heading into spring practice then you look on the side Payton pige 15% pass rush win rate Damonte Kart 133% pass rush win rate Trey Williams has played a ton of football we know what he brings you look at red shirt freshman Vic Burley coming into year two obviously didn't get to see him during 2023 this Clemson defensive line is chalk full with NFL caliber guys but it's also deep and I think that's what makes you so excited for Clemson heading into 2024 this front seven that linebacker room playing behind defensive line a lot of different ways that you can make a lot of opposing offenses very uncomfortable with that front seven going to number three sneaky good Secondary position group the secondary now I think on paper a lot of people are gonna say Clemson takes a step back you lose Nate Wiggins really good football player to the NFL Andrew makuba going to Texas it's a young secondary room but it's it's really talented and you start looking at some of the numbers you look at Shelton Lewis Guy faced 17 targets 29.4% completion percentage C barns 45 targets 55% completion percentage Aven Terrell 32 targets 46% completion percentage these guys as true freshman played phenomenal football for Clemson in the 2023 year only gonna get better going into year two I think that's what's so fascinating about this Clemson team is a lot of their best football players from 2023 were true freshman on the defensive side of the football think you sprinkle in guys like Jaden Lucas who listen we all know Jaden Lucas can play it's just about him staying healthy in 2024 if he does stay healthy I think you have another good quarterback and jayen Lucas it's a young secondary that might continue to go through some Growing Pains but I think you got most of those Growing Pains out in 2023 because a lot of these freshman played a lot of football in the 2023 year you look at this defense it's going to be really good and it's going to keep Clemson in a lot of football games now going to the offensive side of the football that's obviously the big question that we have for Clemson my number one position group on offense coming in at number four overall the wide receiver tight end spot I guess we'll call it the pass catcher room let's start with the tight end position I think arguably the most dynamic pass catcher on this football team Jake bring stool I think what he means to K kumnick and you talk about how can we make klubnik as comfortable as possible going into 2024 Jake Bing schol is your answer you talk about the catch radius the ability to be a matchup nightmare commanding the middle of the field we all know a a young quarterback's best friend is going to be a big- time tight end I think Jake bring St can be that guy was that guy for K kumnick in 2023 the question is the wide receiver position and why I have this unit over the offensive line which certainly might be a hot take for a lot of Clemson fans there's a lot of potential in this room you talk about true freshman T.J Moore Brian Wesco but Adam Randle Antonio Williams Tyler Brown there's a long list of guys that have the capability of being 500 700 maybe even a thousand yard catchers for this Clemson offense in 2024 I think the big question is can you realize that potential you look at a kid like Adam Randall has just struggled with injuries and consistency Antonio Williams brilliant true freshman year struggled with injuries Year too Tyler Brown really really good as a true freshman can he build on that going into year to we've seen all of these guys play really good football can they all do it on a more consistent basis in 2024 that's the question if that is the case and K kumnick takes that step this Clemson offense can be a really really fun offense to watch in 2024 you just got to have these guys take that step we talk about a lot of these programs in the offseason sometimes you just have the conversation and say they don't have Guys Clemson has the guys now they just got to put it on the field going to number five it's the offensive line and Offensive Line what kind of excites me about the offensive line is if these guys stay healthy I think there's a lot of good players on the offensive line I think you only have one question mark That's at the center spot and you have Ryan lindum or Harris Su guys that were kind of confident can come in and play good football I think the big problem with Clemson last year is they had so many different injuries and they were kind of moving guys all around the offensive line it just never seemed like they had the starting five consistently healthy playing in the right spots for multiple games and I think that caused some inconsistencies in the offensive line they return a ton of experience and all guys that have played together with each other albeit kind of not always consistently you look at a lot of programs across the country using the transfer portal as much as they do it's hard to build that offensive line chemistry Clemson's going to have that if they can stay healthy you talk about one benefit from not using the transfer portal now I'm not defending Daven I think he certainly should be using the transfer portal but if you're not one of the benefits that you have is keeping an offensive line relatively on the same page that's a unit that you want all your guys having you know a lot of experience playing with each other and I think this Clemson unit does we've talked about a lot of these guys for the last couple of years this could be a really good offensive line I think Blake Miller can be one of the better tackles that we see in the country can they stay healthy can they be a little bit more consistent you bring in coach Matt lukee I think that's a massive story in terms of this offensive line playing to their potential now that I'm kind of thinking about it and having it in front of me I'd probably have the offensive line over the pass catchers because I kind of talked myself into this Clemson offensive line being pretty damn good that being said it's two units that have all the potential in the world going to number six I have the running back room nothing to do with Phil mafa one of the better running backs that we see in the ACC I think the big question is who's your running back to who's your running back three now Phil moff is a kid that is capable of taking 25 plus carries a game but ideally for this Clemson offense you want a running back too that you can rely on to keep Phil mafa kind of fresh throughout 12 games of a season that's the question mark that I have that's the reason they're coming in at number six when Phil mafa might be the best offensive player on this Clemson football team you got to be deep in the running back room they got to show me that in 2024 going to number seven Kade Club nicking well you guys have heard me talk so we'll keep this brief cave club Nick has there was a reason this kid was a five star coming out of high school Big Arm can operate outside the pocket lot of physical potential with this kid what it comes down to is just being a little bit more consistent and quite frankly finding that confidence that he had at the high school level I think there's a couple of things that make you feel optimistic that we've talked about throughout the off season one having an off a wide receiver room that is healthy throughout your offseason you take a look back at where we were 12 months ago new offensive coordinator in Garett Riley a wide receiver room that had what two healthy wide receivers on scholarship throughout spring practice 12 months ago there was a lot of reasons that Kate kumnick struggled in 2023 that didn't exactly have to deal with just him now it's on him right your wide receiver has been healthy you're going year two into Garrett Riley year two as a starter having command of this offense can K kutnick put it together in 2024 that's the big question and I think there's a lot of reality where K kumnick does I think a lot of people like to just look at that true sophomore year and count klubnik out I'm not so sure I'm GNA do that yet because again there were a lot of things that were working against a Young quarterback last year can you find that confidence and can you find that chemistry within this offense with the new offensive coordinator really talented wide receivers now a year or two starting quarterback that's the question and again we just talked about a defense that I am very confident is going to be a top 10 defense that we see in the country can this offense take a step even a small step is a Clemson team that has the capability of winning the ACC and making the college football playoffs can they put it together in 2024 that's the
