After water main break, GR denies residents’ claims

IN THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION. IT'S BEEN OVER 2 MONTHS SINCE A WATER MAIN BREAK ON GRAND RAPIDS, EASTSIDE THAT IMPACTED NEARLY 200 HOMES NOW MONTHS LATER, THE NEIGHBORS IN THE AREA ARE WORKING TO CLEAN UP. THEY SAY WITH NO FINANCIAL HELP FROM THE CITY. NEWS EIGHT'S ADRIANA DORIA JOINS US LIVE FROM PHILADELPHIA AVENUE IN GRAND RAPIDS WITH THE LATEST ON WHAT NEIGHBORS ARE SAYING IS UNACCEPTABLE. ADRIANNA. >> BRITTANY NEIGHBORS I TALKED TO SAY THEY HAVE 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGES TO THEIR HOMES, TO THEIR VEHICLES AND ALL OF THEIR PROPERTY AND THEY ARE JUST LOOKING FOR ANY SORT OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE THEY CAN GET. SO THEY DID WHAT ANYBODY WOULD HAVE DONE WITH THEY WERE TOLD TO DO SUBMIT A CLAIM TO THE CITY SAYING ALL OF THE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS THAT THEY'RE EXPERIENCING. AND TODAY THEY GOT A LETTER FROM THE CITY THAT WE HAVE HERE THAT WAS SENT TO US THAT DENIES ALL OF THEIR CLAIM SAYING THAT THE CITY WOULD NOT BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE IN WAS NOT LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE TO HELP OUT FINANCIALLY. YOU CAN SEE PART OF THAT STATEMENT HERE. >> BUT THE CITY THAT THE CITY IS ENTITLED TO STATUTORY IMMUNITY FOR DAMAGES TO PROPERTY UNLESS ONE OF 6 NARROW EXCEPTIONS APPLIES. WE HAVE DETERMINED THE GOVERNMENTAL IMMUNITY DOES APPLY IN THIS CASE AND THAT THE CITY IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE DAMAGES THAT YOU HAVE DESCRIBED. WE MUST THEREFORE RESPECTFULLY DENY OR CLAIM. NOW WE HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE CITY TO SEE WHAT THESE EXCEPTIONS ARE, BUT THEY TELL US THIS IS AN ONGOING LEGAL MATTER. THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO COMMENT ON THAT. BUT IN THE LETTER THEY CITE THAT A WATER MAIN BREAK IS NOT A PART OF THOSE EXCEPTIONS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. PEOPLE HERE ARE JUST FED UP WITH THIS RESPONSE. NEIGHBORS TELLING ME THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND THAT THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO NEXT. TAKE A LISTEN. >> WE'VE BEEN IN THE BLACK REALLY FOR 2 >> AND EVERYBODY ON THE STREET DIFFERENT DEGREES OF IN THE SAME PLACE AND NOW WE'RE LOOKING AT $60,000. WE DON'T HAVE AN WINTER IS COMING UP. WE HAVE NO FURNESS. YOU CAN PUT A FRIEND COLLEAGUE ELECTORATE, WHICH IS $10,000. AND SO NOW WE'RE STUCK. I MEAN, 2 MONTHS FROM NOW, WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE LIVING HERE UNLESS IT'S TAKING HERE. >> SOMETHING ELSE. THE CITY SAID IN THAT RESPONSE WAS THAT THESE NEIGHBORS SHOULD REACH OUT TO THEIR INSURANCE COMPANIES, BUT THEY TELL ME. BUT THEY HAVE DONE THAT INSURANCE COMPANY SAID THAT THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO HELP OUT BECAUSE THIS IS A CITY ISSUE. SO PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES DON'T COVER THINGS THAT ARE CITY RELATED. THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE TELLING ME. SO REALLY A BIG HEADACHE HERE FOR THESE NEIGHBORS AND NOW HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGES THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE EXPECTED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET HERE. MORE ON THAT TONIGHT AT 1011. YOU CA
