Highlights from Georgia's G-Day scrimmage

the black team and the red team finished in a 2020 tie at Georgia spring game to help me break down what we saw I'm joined by my cooworker Connor Riley from dog Nation Connor what were you looking for going into this scrimmage and what are the biggest things that stood out to you yeah I think the big thing for me was what were we going to see out of this wide receiver group you lose Brock Bowers you lose lad makoni you bring back Carson Beck one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country what do you see out of this wide receiver core and they delivered today Dominic love it over 100 yards game-winning touchdown going into the hedges to make the game tying score Colby young with a big leaping touchdown there as well Dylan Bell maybe had a touchdown depending on who you talked to he certainly thought he did but I think it was a really strong day for this wide receiver Group which if you're someone that is looking for this Georgia team to be the best version of themselves this season that's a really big thing you needed to see so in my opinion that's a huge win for this Georgia team coming out of today here's what Georgia coach Kirby Smart had to say about young a guy who had a really exciting scrimmage for the Bulldogs he's integrated himself into that group really well uh he's not you know the alpha leader he's a quiet kid but he's a big body he's a tough matchup for all teams and I'm pleased with where he is but you know he still has work to do in terms of learning I looked at him like Rah last year this time last year R didn't understand the offense he couldn't line up and execute all the time he's Ra's a lot further along we didn't have to give him as many reps we didn't have to give Aaron as many reps but uh Kobe did a nice job okay another name everybody wants to hear how this guy did Trevor etn what was your impression of him and what is Georgia need from him this fall yeah running back I I I think you see him bring a different element to this team you know traditionally Del McGee he's brought in some bigger running backs more of the Bruiser type you saw that with Roger Robinson today Andrew Paul doing some things Trevor etn is fast he had some impressive Cuts he also really flashes a wide receiver coming out of the back field catching some passes and helping Georgia in that regard that's something they just didn't have on offense a season ago so I think he's going to be a guy who maybe you don't expect him to carry the ball every time maybe like a 20 to 25 carry person someone who maybe gets 15 carries over the course of a game but like James Cook in the past potentially DeAndre Swift as well I I think this is a guy that can make the most out of maybe some limited carry opportunities for Georgia this year here smart on etn basically yeah this guy's good he's a good back um he's explosive he's quick in and out of the hole uh he's you know different than what we've had I think Swift analog is good Cook's analog is good he's uh he's really taken a lot of uh personal pride in working on his protection and he had a nice pickup today uh he's he's learning the offense I mean look the guy's a he's been a good SEC player for two years it's not like um he's a freshman he's he's a he's a really good player he's a really good kid and I've been proud of the way he's handled everything since his uh deal okay new faces on defense young guys on defense throw out some names KJ Balden five star safety late addition of the signing class lot of fireworks around him this spring I thought he really came out and delivered had a big third down stop showing his speed physicality which is something you really want to see out of a guy that were weight concerns with him coming in he's got a ways to go to be a starter but a guy that has as high a ceiling on as anyone on this team it's really encouraging him to see him go out there and do that and then another guy Gabe Harris a guy that does a lot of different things for this Georgia defense I thought he played really well you see cjl making the nice interception there it's a young defense they were missing some of the veterans but as Kirby Smart sort of touched on today that's not the worst thing as spring is a chance for these guys to learn get some reps and really improve moving forward smart said as far as defensive that group still has a long way to go you know we lost three really good football players there and um we're thin uh you know David Daniel wouldn't able to go today Malachi was out Justin Rhett was out Dello was dealing with a little bit of a hamstring coming off that so we got better in the secondary but we're not where we need to be in terms of being able to make plays on the ball down field and affect the quarterback okay so obviously it's a spring game it's not going to be glorious it's not going to be perfect that's half the point is kind of to get that out of your system and learn about this team what's the biggest thing you learned about this group yeah I I think this is a group that you saw the flashes today you saw Carson Beck make some impressive throws you saw Michael Williams come down with an interception you saw it in bits and chunks and and Kirby touched on this in his postgame can you see that on a more consistent basis that's something they're going to work on over these next couple of months the next time they wear the jerseys they wore today it'll be in Atlanta against Clemson in a really big game but I think you saw the flashes the talent from this team that ultimately can be a college football national champion they just have to find a way to do it on a more consistent basis so moving forward what are the biggest questions this Georgia team will need to answer kall I think this defensive line you saw them as Kirby say play really well today I think he said this is the best they've played all spring can they find that level of consistency can guys develop Gabe Harris we mentioned Mikel Williams with the interception can that group be disruptive and make a difference and you've seen in the past that 2021 Georgia team they were so deep on the defensive line and it overwhelmed teams they've got guys that I think can do that it's just going to take some time to get there and this summer where they're able to lift weights and work out and reshape and sculpt their bodies I think
