CTV National News | Friday, Sept. 13, 2024: Trudeau says feds won't intervein in Air Canada dispute

tonight up in the air the uncertainty ahead as a deadline approaches in the Air Canada labor dispute planes are still flying but some cargo is grounded we may not get home if they don't sett up with the prime minister so far refusing to intervene every time there's a strike people say oh you don't get the government to come in and fix it we're not going to do that pop star Justin Timberlake pleads guilty and hopes others learn from his mistake this is a mistake that I made plus a new threat from Vladimir Putin to Nato over Ukraine's long range missiles it would be devastating because Putin did not initially assume that Ukraine would have this kind of capability oo I would say it's great you know also some good news on gas prices but for how long and the Roar of a Friday the 13th tradition fantastic very nice beautiful people here thousands of motorcycles ride into one Ontario Town CTV national news with Heather buts good evening Canadian Travelers are sharing frustrations tonight ahead of a possible work stoppage at Air Canada if a deal isn't reached the airline and Pilots will be in a position starting Sunday to issue a 72-hour notice of a strike or lockout the Prime Minister dismissed calls to intervene as some groups are already feeling the effects CTP Sarah Plowman reports as Air Canada and its Pilots approach a deadline a failure to land a deal puts passengers plans in the air we may not get home if they don't settle it's a bit of added extra stress Lee Kellogg is supposed to fly home Wednesday the same day 5200 Air Canada Pilots could walk off the job or be locked out but to be honest um I'll just hop on another line if I have to or I'll drive today flights operated as usual but the airline has halted accepting animals and perishables and cargo if by Sunday there's no agreement the airline says it will start to wind down operations key issues at the table are money and work hours the pilots want to narrow the gap between Canadian and American salaries sometimes s we really do feel like we're close to getting a deal and other times we feel like we're still miles apart we've offered uh over 30% increases on wages that can go up to 350,000 per year and more uh but we are unfortunately faced with unreasonable wage demand Air Canada has urged Ottawa to step in and force arbitration a move the Trudeau government made amid a rail dispute last month today the Prime Minister pushed back so I know every time there's a strike people say oh you get the government to come in and fix it we're not going to do that we believe in collective bargaining and we're going to keep pushing people to do it Travelers are left to navigate the turbulence we're just showing up and hoping for the best we did switch our return flight though just in case we were going to get stranded any stoppage wouldn't just bring pain to passengers you know Air Canada is going to be losing between 50 and $60 Million worth of Revenue a day in the strike what expert recommends passengers have a plan B Air Canada says people can change their flights if they want but the reality is there won't be enough seats for everyone in that case people will get a refund Heather all right Sarah thank you more than 33,000 aircraft assembly workers are on strike at Boeing factories in the US dealing the troubled airplane manufacturer another blow our members rejected the contract by 94.6% union members overwhelmingly rejected a tenative contract that would have increased wages 25% over four years the work stoppage will not disrupt commercial flights immediately but it is expected to shut down production of Boeing's airliners two Federal byelections just days away are drawing attention right across the country that may be rare for this type of ballot but the results could say a lot about the mood of Voters and the message they have for party leaders leaders ctv's Quebec bureau chief Jaa bman reports along a pedestrian street in this vibrant diverse neighborhood something unusual is unfolding there's chatter about a suspense build byelection it's in the writing of L Maran which has long been a safe bet for liberals I don't know yet to be honest I really don't know I haven't made up my mind uh I'm not sure I'm going to vote for the Liberals I did not like the way uh David was handled and basically tossed on the side David is former Justice Minister David Lam who stepped down when he was shut out of cabinet triggering this vote the writing was redrawn but this area was for 20 years represented by former Prime Minister Paul Martin I've always voted liberal it's just the party that uh that I feel comfortable with this time though this is shaping up as a three-way race between the Liberals NDP and the BL Kika with cost of living in the housing crisis top of mind in a writing where 2third of people are renters this byelection is really going to be an important moment this could be a crucial moment for the Liberals a loss could signal they're losing even the core party base I have some some pretty serious reservations it feels like the the party as a whole is a bit of a mess this is especially an issue in the wake of the loss of another stronghold to the conservatives in Toronto St Paul is is really their riding to lose right um and um the mdp has some hope because also their candidate Craig sve is quite known but the block is uh is also campaigning very aggressively in that writing still ban says he's not convinced a loss here would push prime minister Justin Trudeau out but he'll look to another byelection in Manitoba for a measure of the strength of the NDP the party has won 10 of 11 elections in Winnipeg's Elwood Transcona writing the other went to the conservatives and analysts expect they could be pulling an all nighter Monday waiting for results CTV News Montreal a judge in New Jersey ordered the driver charged with killing NHL player Johnny goodro and his brother Matthew to remain in jail until his trial like you say something different or inconsistent at a later date the state may use that against you do you understand that sir yes sure prosecutors say Sean Higgins had a blood alcohol level of 087 which is above the legal limit they also say the 43-year-old has a history of road rage goodro who was known as Johnny hockey was killed along with his brother the day before their sister's wedding former NHL enforcer Steven Pete has died after being struck by a car two weeks ago the BC native suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck while crossing a street in Langley Pete played more than a 100 games in the NHL fought concussion issues and experienced homelessness after retiring he was 44 years old Justin Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving today in smalltown New York part of a plea deal that avoids criminal charges scv's Joy malbin reports he's also looking to write his wrong in the court of public opinion Justin Timberlake arrived in the tiny New York village of sag harbor to plead guilty to a lesser charge of driving well impaired and delivering this message as ordered by the judge this is a mistake that I made but I'm hoping that whoever's watching and listening right now can learn from this m mistake I know that I certainly have even if you've had one drink don't get behind the wheel of a car a sobering lesson for the musician who agreed to use his celebrity to warn about the dangers of drinking and driving as part of his plea deal he'll also pay a $500 fine perform community service and his New York license suspended for 90 days as you may know I I try to hold myself to a very high standard for myself and this was not not that one of the bestselling musicians who's cultivated a squeaky clean image since his days as a mousketeer and in the boy band in sync initially he pleaded not guilty said he only had one drink when he was arrested last June police say Timberlake ran a stop sign swerved into oncom coming traffic smelled of alcohol and refused to take a sobriety test and there's a different form of justice for the Rich and Famous and that's what Justin Timberlake benefited from there was no way that any judge was going to send Justin Timberlake to jail for a year and find him $5,000 which was the maximum he would have received Timberlake told the judge he should have had better judgment and understands the seriousness of impaired driving promising to do his part to get the message out Heather Joy thank you Global Affairs C says it is aware of reports that a Canadian is among dozen sentenced to death over an attempt to overthrow the president in the Democratic Republic of Congo the men were accused of leading an attack on the presidential Palace and the home of a presidential Ally back in May that killed six people three Americans a Britain and a Belgian are also facing the death penalty a warning tonight from Russia to NATO allies IES including Canada on the use of long range missiles Ukraine is requesting to use them inside Russia but Moscow is threatening that kind of strike would spark an allout War ctv's Heather Wright reports Russia has drawn a number of red lines during its 2 and a halfe war in Ukraine the latest Western missiles Ukrainian President Vladimir zalinski is asking allies for permission to use their long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia Russia's President says that would mean war with NATO this is a carefully um planned statement by the Russian president um designed to have that chilling effect keev already has long range missiles in its Arsenal provided by allies under the condition they would only be used to hit Russian Targets in Ukrainian territory but that policy may be softening US President Joe Biden and UK prime minister Kier starmer met today at the White House with the US reportedly open to allowing the use of long-range missiles on the condition the weapons used are not those provided by the United States Putin will not Prevail in this war and the people of Ukraine will prevail Russia carries out missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities on a daily basis and Ukraine wants to use its allies sophisticated missile systems to strike back Canada's prime minister agrees Canada fully supports Ukraine using Long Way long range Weaponry to prevent and interdict Russia's continued available continued ability to uh degrade Ukrainian civilian INF infrastructure and while Vladimir Putin has blustered before some say this could draw NATO closer to war zalinski is under a lot of pressure and how much are we going to support him on his homeland but how far are we going to support him when he wants to take the fight into Russia with our weapons uh that's a that's a completely different conversation different game and that's where we are talking about now there are also concerns allowing Western missiles to hit targets within Russia could have an impact on security in the Middle East with some intelligence agencies warning Russia could respond by providing more military aid to Iran Heather ctv's Heather right thank you Pope Francis appeared to criticize both Donald Trump and kamla Harris today today on board the papal plane he told reporters that quote both are against life appearing to refer to abortion rights he also appeared to take aim at Donald Trump over his plan to deport immigrants the pontiff said Catholics will have to choose quote the Lesser evil in November many Canadians don't have a choice when it comes to health care more than one in five simply don't have access to a family doctor and pressure is growing on politicians to take action ctv's KL carali has more on the push in BC before voters go to the polls next month seems to be pretty clear here good the BC College of family physicians says clinics are understaffed and doctors are overwhelmed so they've made a list of Demands for changes ahead of October's provincial election the college says more than 700,000 British Colombians don't have access to a family doctor and nearly 40% of Physicians are set to retire or reduce their hours within 5 years so they're asking for more staff to help reduce paperwork and provide additional support in Nova Scotia the patient wait list to find a family doctor has grown to 160,000 people that's 16% of the population The Province saying today it could take months to get through that list and in Ontario where more than 2 million people are without a family doctor Physicians are leaving small town hospitals with no Replacements today a small Ontario community east of Sous St Marie was closed and in Rainy River a town in Northwestern Ontario doctors say they're withdrawing their services this fall prompting concern since it also serves nearby First Nation groups it's just a terrible terrible thing that's happened and there needs to be some significant changes in order for because otherwise people are going to die it's that dire the Ontario government says it's developing a plan to help with the resource strain but Advocates say the federal government could be doing more by making it easier for foreign trained Physicians to come to Canada and practice Heather thanks KL a hiker is in hospital tonight in Calgary after being attacked by a bear in the [Applause] Rockies a 45-year-old man was airlifted in serious condition after being found by RCMP on a trail in the Crow's Nest pass fish and wildlife officials remain on the scene to assess the risk level to the public meanwhile in Edmonton a young autistic boy was rescued from a Park Pond thanks to some quick-thinking officers gotten there right away to get them so team effort a police helicopter was called in after the boy became separated from his father on a bike ride officers moved in and helped him out of the water there's nothing more important than saving a life or potentially saving a life and uh we're both fathers ourselves so I think you know it's a little kid involved it definitely it you know it touches home a bit this is why we do this job this is part of to do in the job and it's definitely the rewarding side of it coming up focusing on fuel costs going down it's a great news why the price at the pump is low for late summer plus rolling into Friday the 13th [Music] filling up your vehicle is a little more affordable at the moment you may have noticed less stress at the pumps with gas and diesel prices low for late summer and those in Atlantic Canada are seeing a noticeable drop ctv's Paul hollingworth explains a Friday morning dip in prices at the pumps I wish it was lower and this gu take premium new Brunswick gas is down nearly 7 cents per liter gas in Nova Scotia and Pei dropped 4 cents oo I would say it's great you know analyst Dan mctigue says across the country Canadians are enjoying a savings of almost 20 cents per liter for gas compared to this time last year with more affordable fuel in the near future we're heading on September 15th to Winter blends of gasoline and that means that a net Savings of 5 cents a liter is on its way diesel in Canada has dropped roughly 12 cents in 12 months but it should increase soon very much in a higher Direction because we're heading to Colder Weather heating oil is diesel according to mctigue there are multiple reasons for this recent Trend oil hit $65 a barrel for West Texas intermediate this time last year was $87 $88 a barrel MC Teague says the North American Marketplace is bracing for a possible recession which has led to price adjust ments Daly University Professor Lauren Sheen says cheaper fuel could cause a boost in fall and winter tourism when we look at fuel prices dropping as we have seen recently that's going to help that Regional Drive Market people that jump in their cars take a road trip uh explore their Province explore uh even out of Province as for reasons for a possible reversal it's still hurricane season major storms in the Gulf of Mexico could damage refineries and Spark a change in fuel prices Paul Hollingsworth CTV News Helifax no gas required for this next Story the sports car running on bricks and batteries after the [Music] break two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station are taking it in stride it's a very risky business and things do not always turn out the way you want before we to anybody putting superstitions aside for a long-standing [Music] tradition today is Friday the 13th a day of superstitions but in Port do Ontario it marks a major motorcycle gathering it's largely a day of Celebration but there are serious safety lessons too ctv's Tyler ker has more on the Roar and the risks on the road with the rumble of engines and black leather as far as the eye can see the great Biker congregation returns to Port Dover for another Friday the 13th I've been coming here 50 years 60 years something like that it's just meeting people talking to people what began as an idea more than 40 years ago has turned into a tradition the town of about 8,000 people expecting upwards of aund th000 people close to double last year's turnout we heard uh in Central Europe about this wonderful Holly DAV this is Roman Ker's second time visiting he traveled 7,000 kilometers from Austria just for this event we jumped on a plane and we visited you guys on Lake Erie I don't own a business owners calling it one of the busiest days on the calendar it pays for a lot of the businesses for pry pretty much the year when it comes to Ontario Provincial Police safety is the top priority just before 700 a.m. a 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving an SUV about 20 kilm North of Port Dover a motorcyclist that was pronounced deceased at the scene and our um our team is still putting the pieces of the puzzle together police didn't confirm if the motorcyclist was headed to or from Port Delver officers work to control traffic throughout the day asking drivers to avoid the area if possible we'll change the event a little bit year-over-year where the bike's parked what roads are closed uh the direction the traffic travels and uh we take a lot into consideration but safety is Paramount a plan that this year took more than 6 months to put together and will keep rolling on as long as the bikes keep rolling in Tyler Keller her CTV News Port do that
