NFL offensive rookies to watch: Expectations for Drake Maye & Xavier Legette

we are live in beautiful Dublin Ireland oh my God see over under on like uh the cranberries and YouTu music and I don't know how many Irish bands can you name speaking of over unders 55 and a half tomorrow for Georgia Tech Florida State 55 and a half you like that too high yeah I'm hammering the under on that one for me way too high on that one I don't mind the spread at 10 and a half but has it moved down to 10 and a half cuz it opened at like 12 and a half I think it was big it was a bigger number it was a much bigger number yeah get in all your preseason stuff if uh you are uh you're thinking about laying down a few coins on the games here lines will move a little bit but not at all I mean it's the crazy thing about question marks in This Time of the Season they we're calling it week zero but really it's not it's it's week one it is week one uh for the college football season but the it's all about the unknowns this is actually my more favorite time when it comes to me Sports wagering uh because you get such large spreads and you look for Trends and to see if the Alabam of the world are really doing what you expect them to do with the Oregons of the world or Ohio States or whatever anyway just a quick aside there uh Paul iander again Graham Hill right there it is a Friday the NFL has a large number of question marks when it comes to rookie play a lot of rookies draft in the first round are expected to do big things but can they truly do big things like we I think think we as a as a collective need to set the bar in what we expect from a lot of rookies now we'll get to the Panthers in a hot second here but there are a number of players and it's easy to start with quarterbacks right it's very easy to start with quarterbacks the question is whether or not Drake May will be named the number one in New England which would be different because he's the only one you truly can't set the bar for unless you just say yep he's going to be the number one guy and he will throw for x amount of yards and help the New England Patriots to win I think his bar might actually be one of the lower ones when it comes to the four rookie quarterbacks that are available playing because JJ McCarthy who would have been five and J Michael pennx who would have been six uh McCarthy hurt for the season penck probably not going to see any time unless Kirk Cousins just can't get it done for what is it $47 million a season or I I mean I don't mean this I don't want to wish this on cousins but gets injured again yeah he's at that point his career man with his age and now you know he's Gott banged up a few times com off injury big question mark for me is can he stay healthy if he stays healthy then you're not worried about Michael penck then he can do what he needs to do in the NFC South so you look at this group this this class and of the four of the highest expectation probably has to be Caleb Williams without any excuses outside of the fact that we're not quite sure what they're going to be able to do to block for him but that's why you grab Caleb Williams he is an athletic specimen and if he's able to throw with every group every person around him like he has the receiving core of receiving cores like former number ones who are turning into who are number ones with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen like and DeAndre Swift is his lead back now behind him formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles like there should be no reason why Caleb Williams does not do well with the Chicago Bears I mean they free have done everything to set him up for success with as you mentioned a great group of skill position players that certainly meet a high you know expectation for him it's just a matter of how insul can he connect with that Stellar group right he should be the man like of the four that are available he should be the man now I waver because the question is again for me for is it is Drake May gonna get the one so if Drake May gets the one what is he looking at is he check down check down check down check down because he's got rookie receivers or can they step up and his success will be tied to the Youth of that group in New England whether or not they can get him to believe in himself knowing that he's capable of making the throws he's capable of having connections with his offense and that he actually gets some production because they are the thinnest of the groups I believe I mean Drake May certainly has made the case and he's proven that he's ready to start earlier than many people were anticipating in his uh during Camp you were hearing the stories about how he was getting tack or he was getting sat that's more in the offensive line but you know for Drake May a lot of people are starting to say that the Patriots are a lot more of a competitive rebuilding team than you think and maybe it's because of that young receiver group they have they may think there's some untapped potential there but that's the bit can they untap that potential with Drake May Center or KOB brette to start the season same way with Bo Knicks and Denver named the starter earlier this week but they've got a rough rough offensive line it's not like there are super s they traded away the majority of them and the guys that are coming back that he's going to be throwing to while again finding chemistry with Marvin Mims uh Mims is coming off an injury so Nicks is going to have to do a lot of that on his own but he's in a system with Shawn Payton that is tailored like Shawn Payton went out and said this is my guy Russell Wilson wasn't his guy never was his going to be his guy but this is nicks's team to command but there's a lot of pressure because the last time that Denver needed to start a rookie or had started a rookie guy's a Hall of Famer and a Super Bowl champion to John Elway John Elway has steakhouses in Denver that people go to and line up for because of that that's going to be a challenge for him like I think and I'm I'm a bow Knicks guy for many many reasons but he's going to have a real tough challenge if he's not able to command that offense and you're in a division with Los Angeles Chargers and Justin Herbert you're in a division with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City you have a hill to climb not worried so much about the Raiders I mean everyone is saying that this you know offensive scheme of Shawn Peyton's this fit to make B Nick succeed and here's a crazy stat for you I this is just you don't hear this often nowadays for college football 61 college starts underneath bcks he was a long shows that he plays with a lot of confidence can he be efficient though with pton correct so the last quarterback and we are going to touch on the Panthers here in a hot second last quarterback Jaden Daniels Jaden Daniels again specimen saw him at Arizona State ran through my ducks destroyed me in one game he's 64 and is as athletic as everyone says he's going to be but I've heard the story before and it the only question marks I'm going to have about Daniels right now are that he is working with Cliff Kingsbury as his offensive coordinator and Cliff kingsberry with Kyler Murray was able to unlock him a bit in Arizona but also was kind of like is it all together so he's going to have to tailor that offense to what Daniels does best and for Daniels to make the right calls at the right times to no longer Johan doson who just got dealt yesterday to the Eagles so he's got to work on a little bit of different chemistry with a few different guys and it is the Washington commanders it is the commanders who have had a revolving door that he is about to try to stop but of all the upside among like he could be the surprise guy like he could go back and forth with Caleb Williams as the man with Drake May and B Knicks kind of nipping at their heels depending on again if Drake's named number one in New England but Daniels could be that guy if he can get on the page with cliff kingsburry and minimize any issues that come with just being the Washington Commander quarterback and we're going to see if he's be able to air it out underneath the Kingsbury offense that likes to attack through the passing game can he make highlight real games with legs on a consistent basis and also can he mature quickly as far as jayen Daniels in college love to take off I don't know how much he's gonna be able to do that in the NFL before he gets popped one time and realizes okay don't do that he's got to know when to protect himself from contact that's the biggest thing that I'm looking for out of Jaden Daniel Jaden Daniels this season no undeniable undeniable you know Cliff kingsbery did wonders with Kyler Murray and then had some struggles with Kyler Murray it cost Cliff Kingsbury his job so hooking himself up with another top quarterback and developing that kind of chemistry and figuring that thing out all right final rookie and I mentioned we talk about the Carolina Panthers there are expectations when you are a top draft choice especially when it comes in round one and a team that traded up to get zette out of South Carolina a guy who's been having some injury issues in the camps there's no doubt about it they overwhelmingly protected him as a wide receiver and what you're hoping for him and again we're trying to set the bar we're not trying to not trying to go he's going to do this he's he might do this he might not do this for zette and you look at him and he's not he's he's not up there with you know Marvin Harrison Jr clearly remember number two pick ranun I mean this just goes on and on but he falls in that what does he do with this team moving forward because what you don't want and I bring you the cautionary tale of Quinton Johnson Quinton Johnson picked late in the first round in 2023 a wide receiver TCU built like Z Legette tall physical receiver and couldn't quite figure it out in year one with Justin Herbert struggled in that offense now they're ask him to play a bigger role this year that's the cautionary tale of zette and I hope that it doesn't go that same way that he's able to connect and he's able to figure out what Brad idzik and Dave Canalis are trying to do and Bryce young can just simply get him the ball I mean for Legette when you look at his size structure physicality playmaking abilities it's just what the doctor ordered for Dave Canales and this coaching staff out behind Deontay Johnson who I think is going to be what I like to call the phone booth receiver where he can just catch in how type of win you can provide for him sure Xavier is going to be great at 50-50 balls and JC horn even talked about when he went up against him in training camp he said man he's big he's strong he's fast I I got caught a couple of times on pass interferences just trying to uh contain him in coverage that is something that I'm excited to see on the outside in this passing game is Legette going up for one-on-one opportunities if young can get cooking and young can develop quick chemistry with get and doesn't forget about him right what happens with rookie receivers is sometimes they get forgotten about they'll get two Targets three targets because I'm feeding Deontay Johnson and Adam thielen that but that's the role right I need to feed them a ton but to draft a guy in the first round at receiver you have the expectation of making sure that that receiver plays football night in night out and gets more than enough targets and then is able to catch those things because you know what happens right quarterback stops trusting receivers he goes away you you are not my safety blink you are not the guy that I need to get involved in this offense because I got two or three other guys that have been involved the entire time and I know they will catch everything and they will catch everything so that that that floor for Le get don't get forgotten don't get forgotten maximize those opportunities all right so good start good start to is from one of the hotter artists on the planet jelly roll and the song is called get by jelly rolls get by doesn't quite feel like a college football song should should we play some of it yeah no play play play a little clip and people can hear what we're talking about when it comes to let me if I can just get to the I'm not sure if you could actually find get by it was like there is the Clapping helps right the Clapping part helps but does it sound like college [Music] football yeah no uh is it just because maybe or Iowa yeah it's like it's jelly roll so he's like the hottest thing out there I mean he truly is going a concerts and whatnot but doesn't feel like college football to me all right pull up last year's if you kid uh post Malone it's called something real no I played it as one of the uh the rejoins earlier today but I like I was a fan of this one I don't know what it was maybe it's because I'm a post Malone fan right but again it was kind of the same bit with jelly roll last year post bone was the hottest right hot artist it's got the kind of the choir vibe to it but it's got the bass it's got the hip-hop feel it feels like a walk-in song though it doesn't feel like a this is the vibe of the Season feel it it looks it sounds like something that should be playing when the team's walking down the hallway in the tunnel right with the lights off and the lights off in the stadium and the LEDs going off flashy light all the flashy lights hey man I'll take anything than that other than that Imagine Dragon song in 2018 that got played out way too much oh dude and I'm trying not to sneeze folks so I'm just I'm I'm I'm a little bit lost here because I'm like my eyes are starting to water because I'm trying not to like like like just kind of all over the all over the microphone that someone else will be using well I think there's a allergies are driving me nuts right now is that the same kind of bit for a lot of folks like my allergies are driving me crazy right now it's like the quick cool down that happened I think North Carolina weather's just drunk right now maybe it doesn't know what it wants to do my problem is is it I gave up on the allergy meds for a little bit I stopped taking it and my wife is just hammering it's just like Paul it's like you got to take your meds excuse me we're in false fall right now fall for North Carolina weather false fall as long as there's a noon kickoff in NC State's non-conference portion of the schedule it will ramp back up to 98 de yeah yeah it's supposed to be 95 I think later this week I'm just like I'm just it's been brutal like and maybe because I was I spent last night on a baseball field for two hours it could have been that and like you were at a concert two nights ago you're not you're not hurting at all though no I'm fine like yeah you don't maybe you just don't have the allergies like I do like I just they say your body changes like every six to eight years right things taste differently and your body chemistry changes and foods that you used to like you don't like anymore this is like just science in general maybe it's just like every eight months with me like there's
