Will Max Johnson be UNC’s starting QB or does Mack Brown have another player in mind?

Will Max Johnson be UNCs starting QB Max Johnson didn't transfer from Texas A&M to watch uh what Connor Harold or jacobe Chiswell play did he no he did not no he surely didn't so I'm assuming it'll be Max Johnson but they're being quite koi over in Chapel Hill uh do you think it will be Max Johnson I think by the way what sort of I mean it's 2024 like there is there's tape on all these guys anywhere you want to get it from I don't know what I mean you can watch every game anyone has ever played Minnesota's got a their starter is going to be a dude named Max brosmer who transferred from New Hampshire um of all places uh lovely country up there loveely absolutely but you can watch all of his games um but I I'm sorry I I I got off a little topic off topic there with this game it's like Is Max Johnson the starter a game of chicken they're playing um the two teams but no I would I would say that every indication we have um is that nine days from now I think it is August 29th that Max Johnson will be the starter for UNCC now m brown has not stood in front of the microphones and announced you know formally uh anointed Max as a starter but um that's every indication that that we've been getting um they UNCC scrimmaged on Saturday at Keenan stadium and it was kind of an interesting deal where it was closed to people like me who around a legal pad and take notes but if you were a big wig donor um or a parent um you know if you had a certain status right you could go in there and watch the scrimmage and what what we have heard we've reported a little bit of it but Max vs Connor Max had a good day some people around the program think that he sealed the deal on Saturday um and I know that that Connor threw two interceptions on Saturday from what we've been told Max apparently had a long 60- yard touchdown run now of not t they're not tackling these quarterbacks you know you you you got to touch them so it sounds like he didn't get touched on the play um so you know like I said some people around the program they think that that's sort of locked it up for Max and from what we've seen I feel like Connor has had some interception problems right during training camp from what we've seen But Max certainly has the experience too I mean this is a guy who's been around the block LSU Texas amm son of Brad Johnson so uh that's who I would expect you know Mack Mack has said we'll find out when whoever trots out there next Thursday night so but this is uh what we talked Max Johnson uh it was earlier this month I said I that would be my guess I'm sticking I'm sticking to the max Johnson guns on this one a yeah it's funny we spoke to both uh Max and Connor down at ACC football kickoff uh Max you know comes off as I mean certainly not arrogant but confident in uh in who he is he's got 22 starts in the SEC so he's got an opportunity uh here at UNCC in the in like the draft of Drake May uh to kind of step in and and I think make a mark for this team and that game against Minnesota it's a big game uh for UNC and it's a big game for the uh for the Atlanta Coast Conference good thing is he can turn it around turn around and hand it to Omarian Hampton uh 20 some odd times and there aren't a lot of quarterbacks in college football that get to do that that's a plus um and I would say I would I don't know maybe caution I don't know how RAB QB competition UNC fans are for this football season uh you know um I I would say that to me this this quarterback competition is a competition to get to the opener I don't think you know I don't think that you're never going to see another quarterback the rest of the season um you know I think it's I think it's a race to get to to earn the starting job for the opener and then from there let's say it's Max Johnson he has to he has to keep the thing I would say um I I don't think they're going to hesitate to possibly try a change up there um you know if if they're not getting what they want out of Max but yeah Omarian Hampton pretty nice yeah pretty nice uh somebody to have in the backfield led the ACC in rushing last year fifth in the nation um as I have said many times to you I the man has no fat on him right I mean he is just the guy is put together and um Amarian Hampton he looks good he looks good now uh that offensive line has lost four starters yeah and they're gonna have people starting that have never started college games so I don't know you it' be interesting to see can Omarian Hampton lead the ACC and rushing again I don't know he had Drake May at quarterback doing a lot of great Drake May things he has a lot of weapons around him you've got to think on the most fundamental basic level other defenses are going to be keying in to stop amarian Hampton so um I don't think you know he's no secret um but as we've talked about he's got 2,000 yards as a goal for this season I mean that's pretty dang lofty no one's ever done no one's ever done it at UNC whether whether it's 2,000 yards rushing or maybe combined rushing and receiving because I know when we talked to him at operation I was just I was just you know kind of goofing around with different things asked him who a uh a running back Christian McCaffrey was that he watched he talked about Marshon Lynch being somebody that uh that he loved to watch you know uh growing up and honestly that's a that's a guy that you just can't tackle but he was not necessarily a great receiver but then he mentioned Christian mcaffrey so if like if he's going to add the out of the backfield reception part to his game it makes it easier on Max Johnson and it gives him a chance to get the ball in space and if they can get him the ball I don't know if he can catch uh 25 passes over the course of a season uh that would put him in uh like a different a different category there's great running backs in this league I mean the kid dyn I can tell you this if you want to know who's staying after practice and working on their hands it's am Mari and Hampton they got the jugs machine over there in one corner which you're a man who's a professional in the audio world it's not great for our audio when we're recording these post-practice interviews we just got into practice a little bit ago I was Victoria it was great timing um they got the jugs machine going off across the way you know it sounds like a dang shotgun um but it's a Marian Hampton down there and Darwin Barlo the transfer from USC uh and you know they are always staying after you know full full pads full helmet the whole deal and firing those footballs at each other to work on like you're talking about maybe becoming a more well-rounded back Christian mcaffrey is the new name you're hearing from amarian Hampton he used to always talk about saquan Barkley he used to always talk about Nick chub you know so yeah I think just that hear the name Christian mcaffrey from his mouth this preseason that's pretty telling about you know where he would like to take his game I think also if you want to if you're a running back and you want to uh get to your second contract uh you better learn how to catch the football uh Power echles is everywhere in terms of you know preseason watch list here watch list there I think he was Defensive line preseason First Team all ACC uh and I just would do would want to point out Hampton was first team preseason All America uh by the Associated Press so that's rarified air uh not only for i me for anybody but for a UNC running back um but is there any what who else on the defensive side do has stood out do we expect to have an impact on North Carolina's defense I mean maybe the most the the person I would think UNC fans might be watching or leaning in toward watching the most might be the defensive coordinator SE colins because you I mean I know he's not gonna make a tackle right he shouldn't that would be illegal yeah it would it would it would be some old school stuff it guys coming off the sidelines and tripping guys or whatever back in the day um yeah well you know I think Cayman Rucker could could he had a big year last year um off the edge of the defensive line I think he could have another big year you know it's a it's a Dez Evans proverbial Make It or Break It contract type year for Dez Evans who was one of the highest recruited guys ever out of the state of North Carolina he's the second highest recruit in in the internet era that that UNCC signed behind a guy named Marvin Austin who we could talk about for a little while sure um but but you know he he has he it's it the bar was really high on Dez Evans coming out of leag County high school and he has not sort of lived up to that billing yet so um you know he would be one to watch but I I think it's all going to sort of hinge on how they're playing defensively and and you know how you've been around a long time you know at this point in the preseason guys like me have been drinking a lot of the Kool-Aid that they've been fed for the last three weeks or so you know we've heard so much about how they're going to play differently on defense and we seen it too I mean we've seen that you know you'll be at a practice and here come the linebackers walking up to the line of scrimmage you're like oh my God these guys are about to you know Blitz and then they drop back at the snap and here come the safety you know that you weren't expecting I mean you know I think uh from a from a 10,000 foot view you could say that the the Jean chisik defenses of the last several years were sort of molded in a Bend but but don't break type of attitude and this is supposed to be you know the Jeff Collins that was at Georgia Tech the minister of Mayhem uh you know the signs for money down on third down because money down is the down you get off the field you know um you know I I think I think that on the defensive side of the ball will be the most interesting thing to watch um next week at Minnesota is just how aggressive are they um you know how every coach in any sport if it's basketball oh we're going to run and we're going to play Fast every coach Tony Bennett ever has you know smart fast and physical every coach has it sure I wonder if Tony Bennett said that in his hiring press conference no he did not no but you know how it is you know you know you hear this and so we'll see to to what degree you know this aggressiveness this aggressive style that they play I think they're really deep in the secondary to where they could hold up if they want to play The Press coverage on the outside right and turn it loose with some of the other guys I they are very thin at linebacker but um you know I that's again you know if they are if they rise to a Le a level where they're average on defense to where it's a passable defense you know that's an improvement over the last couple years that that is true uh we are laying the bar on the ground but that's that is it's a fair but it's a fair statement the defense has been really uh porous and that would uh that would Adam Smith probably cover it over the last several years uh Adam Smith inside Carolina at adamore smithore I I shorted you an underscore
